Beltoise and Lemaitre return to Mirage Racing in 2024 for another bash at the FFSA GT4

You must admire a team who quickly get all ‘their ducks in order’ at the earliest possibility ahead of the new season as the Mirage Racing team recently confirmed their fourth driver pairing.

Again racing two Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s within both of the FFSA GT4 and GT4 European Series, the French based squad this week confirmed that drivers Yves Lemaitre and Vincent Beltoise would be returning to the squad for another bash at the Pro-Am class within the French national GT series.

They will race alongside new teammates in Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub who will be do doing double driver duties within both SRO Series whilst the second crew within the GT4 European Series will again be the Ruben Del Sarte alongside the former R-Racing Brit in Josh Miller.

The FFSA GT4 Series will get under way first at the opening round from Nogaro in late March with the sister European Series starting just a week later from Paul Ricard. Although the first Aston Martins to be publicly listed within each series, we’re sure that they will not be the last!

Blackthorn AMR confirmed with two Vantage GT3 entries in Le Mans Cup Series

With last weekend being IMSA related, this week and into this coming weekend will be heavily ACO rules racing related as the Asian Le Mans Series looks set to get back to racing in their winter-based season in Dubai and the Le Mans Cup Series announce their multi-class entry list for the start of their 2024 season.

A huge forty-two car entry list was confirmed today by the Le Mans Cup Series ahead of their ninth season of running that will see up to twenty-nine LMP3 cars run alongside up to thirteen GT3 cars in their six-round season.

With the Racing Spirit of Leman Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 of Arnold Robin and Valentin Hasse-Clot taking the GT3 Championship honours at the final round of the season last year at the Autodromo Do Algarve, it was great to see that their position within the series will be taken by not one but two AMR Vantage GT3’s from the UK based Blackthorn AMR team.

Formed in 2022, the Claude Bovet owned team started with a Mercedes AMG GTS before converting to Aston Martin last season although that move only saw limited competitive running for their car being shared between Bovet and David McDonald.

Conspicuous by their presence at the AMR test of the new for 2024 Vantage GT3 and GT4 at Snetterton last year, we expect that both cars being listed today will be within the latest iteration of car in a season that starts again in Barcelona in mid-April.

Whilst the series has listed an interesting driver base for the two Blackthorn cars (including Bovet and McDonald but in different cars), there are still licensing requirements that need to be fulfilled before these entries can be officially confirmed.

Multi Moto GP world Champion Jorge Lorenzo joins Lazarus Corse AMR in GT3

Tentative steps of last year are hopefully growing into purposeful ones this time around for the Lazarus Corse Aston Martin Racing Partner team as they last week revealed that five times former Moto GP Champion Jorge Lorenzo will be joining their team this season.

Having taken delivery of a new AMR Vantage GT3 back in the summer of last season, the Italian based team has since only been known to have conducted a multitude of test days at various European circuit with a varying group set of drivers.

Still not confirming the actual series that they will compete in nor any details of co-drivers and/or the chances of upgrading their existing chassis to that of the new 2024 variant, last week’s news still leaves us with something of waiting game on that front, but we do not think that there will be an AMR/Lorenzo versus a BMW/Valentino Rossi GT3 battle on the horizon just yet!

But you never know!!

Since stepping back from Moto GP, Lorenzo has also been developing his car craft in both Porsche Cup cars and within the Lamborghini Trofeo series. Even for Lorenzo, stepping up to full GT3 specification cars will take something of a considered learning curve.

Challenges of a new car at a season opening 24hr for the Heart of Racing team

The Heart of Racing scored a fourth-place finish in the GTD PRO category of the Rolex 24 At Daytona this weekend. The No. 27 Heart of Racing GTD entry had a promising start to the race as the team looked to defend its 2023 win at Daytona International Speedway but was forced to retire early after encountering a technical issue before the halfway point.

Leading up to the famed 24-hour race, the team worked on different setups and pit stop practices through three practice sessions on Thursday. After opting out of the fourth practice session on Friday to have more fresh tires ready for the race, the team was set for Saturday’s 1:40pm Rolex 24 At Daytona start.

Alex Riberas, Ross Gunn, and Mario Farnbacher piloted the No. 23 Heart of Racing GTD PRO entry, finishing fourth after starting 11th in class. The race ran at a near-record pace, with the team losing some ground when it was forced to replace the nose during a pitstop after the No. 23 Heart of Racing entry suffered damage while avoiding contact with a crashed prototype.

But with good pit stops, efficient strategy, and consistent race pace, the No. 23 Heart of Racing team was able to fight its way back to cross the finish line in fourth position.

“Wow. Definitely a tough race for the No. 23 crew. But overall, an extraordinary effort by everyone. I mean, we didn't have the pace to be top 10 today, and we somehow managed to finish fourth, which is a phenomenal result. It shows the fighting spirit of this team and of this entire organization, shows that we can definitely look at bigger things in the future. Hopefully we make a step forward in Sebring with a more competitive race” said Riberas afterwards.

The No. 27 Heart of Racing GTD team started from the 18th row on the grid with Team Principal Ian James behind the wheel. James passed the wheel to Roman De Angelis on lap 95 in eighth. The young Canadian drove the Aston Martin Vantage to lead the race for 30 laps before Zach Robichon took over the wheel.

On lap 329, Marco Sorensen had control of the Aston Martin Vantage when an electrical issue came about, forcing the No. 27 Heart of Racing entry to the pits. After troubleshooting for a few different items, the team pulled the Aston Martin back to the garage where they continued to try to diagnose the problem for an hour and a half before concluding that the car needed to be retired.

Roman De Angelis added “The time I was in the car was fun, it was my first race stint of the year. I had a bit of a break since the last time I was in a race so I really enjoyed that. I had a really fun stint battling with people and we were in a pretty good place at that time but had some misfortune with the issues with the car and had to retire. It is kind of a shame but we learned a lot about the car. It’s unfortunate to miss out on some points that hopefully, we won't be missing later on in the year but just keep working from here at Sebring.”

Team TGM take a double as the Michelin Pilot Challenge returns to action from Daytona

Yesterday saw Team TGM stand tall and proud within Victory Lane at the end of the opening round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series from Daytona as both their #46 and #64 crews overcome personal injuries as well as circumstance upon track to claim class silverware between them.

It was however, the #46 car of Owen Trinkler and Matt Plumb who stole the headlines after Trinkler came back from serious injury sustained within a testing accident late last year to pilot his Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 for twice as long as expected to give his co-driver their best shot at a GS Class win at the end of the four-hour opener.

Within a combined GS (GT4) and TCR grid of forty-five cars, Trinkler headed the seven strong Aston Martin pack out of Qualifying on Thursday to start the BMW M Endurance Challenge from the front row in second whilst the next Aston was just outside of the top 10.

Having struggled for laps during last weekend’s Roar before the 24 Test, the #09 Automatic Racing AMR of Brandon Kidd would start from P11, just ahead of the #19 Van Der Steur of Dominic Starkweather and the #88 Archangel of Todd Coleman in P13 and P14 respectively. Frank DePew would qualify their all new 2024 AMR Vantage GT4 in P25 (after those at Rebel Rock Racing also experienced limited running at the Roar due to technical issues) with Ted Giovanis rounding off the AMR Qualifiers in P26.

The debuting #16 Skip Barber Racing AMR crew would sadly suffer from an irreparable incident on track during an earlier Free Practice session and would not be able to start their first MPC race of the season together.

Come the start of the race, it was Trinkler aboard the #46 TGM car who publicly declared his intentions first as he rounded off the opening lap of the race at the front having passed the Pole sitting BMW on the banking as they experienced issues with their cars bodywork and whilst he made some air at the front, the #09, #88 and #19 Aston Martin’s were having to argue over their own real estate on track in the midst of the GS pack.

With various TCR cars suffering varying ill effects of racing out on track, the circuit stayed green long enough for the GS leaders to start passing through what was left of the class before the first caution period came about after the pole setting BMW suffered contact out on track.

Once pit lane was opened, all Aston Martins except for the all new #71 Rebel Rock Vantage pitted for service as some were just ten minutes short of their minimum drive time. The trouble with cautions being that they tend to breed cautions nearly came about as the #19 Van Der Steur of Starkweather and the #88 Archangel car of Coleman appeared to each miss their braking point into the International Horseshoe to bump each other wide and off track – no major damage to either but both suffered a heavy drop in running position as a result.

With the #71 eventually pitting for Andrew Davis to take charge, the #46 TGM car of Trinkler was back into the lead but with still nearly three hours, the race sadly unravelled for the #88 Aston Martin of Coleman. Suffering further side to side contact and a resulting puncture, that damage, speeding within the pit lane and having too many operatives working upon the car in pit lane – well, that just added at least four to five drive through penalties to their ongoing woes which effectively ended their race there and then.

They however were not the only ones to receive penalties as Davies was soon back along the pits after the #71 car allowed its wheels to spin whilst upon their jacks at the last service. With second drivers now aboard the #19, #09 and #64, it was time to see what Rory Van Der Steur, Ramin Abdolvahabi and Kris Wilson (respectively) could do about their mid to lower GS track positions.

Passed halfway and it was soon to be another blue-on-blue contact as a charging Wilson aboard the #64 unfortunately nudged the #19 car of Van Der Steur into a spin going into turn 1 – whilst the #19 obviously lost both time and positions, Race Control did not impose any sanction onto Wilson for that incident!

More Full Course Cautions for thankfully non major incidents on track later and the race was shaping up nicely into a final hour dash to the flag. With all six remaining Aston Martins still circulating (although the #88 was by now well out of contention being 8 laps down), the #46 of Plumb was still holding robust P3 but with the #19 and #71 cars up to P10 and P11 before a small gap to the #64 and #09 in P14 and P15.

With fuel strategy now playing a significant impact on the front runners, Rebel Rocks own strategy was again compounded by a second DTP – again for wheel rotation at their last stop. Oh, what might have been had these two simple errors in pit lane had been avoided!!!

As the race entered its final ten minutes, both leading BMW’s blinked first and pitted for fuel whist Plumb, and the third leading BMW stayed out as each driver effectively played Russian roulette with their fuel numbers. Eventually and with just two lap to go Plumb pitted for that splash of fuel that would be enough for that car to secure a magnificent P3 overall at the chequered flag.

Robin Liddell brought home their new #71 AMR home in P9 whilst Valentin Hasse-Clot was unable to haul his #19 Van Der Steur car higher than P11 at the end whilst the #64 TEAM TGM came home P14 overall but also first within their own Bronze Cup class to make for a great day for the Giovanis owned team. The #09 Automatic Racing car of Rob Ecklin would eventually come home P15 in class with the #88 Archangel car of Coleman and Aaron Telitz rounding off the AMR contingent in P20.

Another epic Daytona opener for the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series that now moves onto round two from Sebring in March.

Michelin Pilot Challenge 2024 gets underway at Daytona with their usual 4Hr opener

After two days filled with five test sessions around the infield circuit layout of the Daytona International Speedway at the Roar before the 24 IMSA test last weekend, today sees the runners within the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series finally get down to some official business.

With last weekend being of non-obligatory attendance, today and tomorrow’s Free Practice sessions for the GS/TCR based entry list definitely are as the seven Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 powered crews return to the Floridian circuit for their first four-hour opener of the season on Friday.

Fortunately, all seven AMR teams attended last weekend’s test and that was just as well for some as that saw them run their first ever laps within the new cars and/or series.

The Rebel Rock Racing crew had perhaps the most difficult Roar experience as they converted to the all-new AMR Vantage GT4 Evo (the only ones to be running a GT4 Evo this weekend) but that came with its own niggles for drivers Frank DePew, Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis as one their only car at the time suffered gearbox issues that would see them withdraw from the opening two races of the VP Racing Sportscar Challenge Series for DePew. With a second car now within the paddock, life should be at least a little bit more comfortable although spares for the Evo model will remain scarce for the next few weeks at least.

With technical gremlins also struck down the #09 Automatic Racing AMR entry of Rob Ecklin, Ramin Abdolvahabi and Brandon Kidd in last weekend’s opening test sessions as they struggled to string any significant number of laps together, but the weekend eventually came good for many of the other Aston Martin runners as the #88 Archangel entry of Aaron Telitz and Todd Coleman came top of the GS class at the end, closely followed by the #46 Team TGM AMR of Matt Plumb and Owen Trinkler.

That leaves the #64 Team TGM car of Hugh Plumb, Ted Giovani and Kris Wilson who will be the sole AMR representative within the Bronze Cup this weekend and the #16 Skip Barber Racing entered car of Ken Fukuda, Carter Fartuch and Will Lambros.

The #19 Van Der Steur entry of Rory Van Der Steur, Dominic Starkweather and Valentin Hasse-Clot round off the magnificent seven as the proficient GT4 racer, Aston Martin works driver and Lamborghini Trofeo racer all combine for the first time although VDS and VHC have raced together before.

This weekend schedule sees the twenty-eight strong GS field and seventeen strong TCR based class undertake on two Free Practice sessions today and tomorrow before Qualifying later on Thursday and a start to their four-hour opener at 13:45hrs local on Friday.

That will be just the beginning of a brand-new exciting Michelin Pilot Challenge season.

Forsetti sign up Porter and Higgins for GTH season within GT Cup Championship

Snetterton based Forsetti Motorsport are again in the news this week as they informally announce another race series commitment with another young pairing aboard one of their Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s.

Presently competing (and rather successfully too) within the GT4 Winter Series around the best circuits that Portugal and Spain can offer, today saw one of AMR’s latest Partner Teams also confirm a GT4 (GTH) entry within the UK’s GT Cup Championship that kicks off at Donington Park in mid-April.

Confirming a very young partnership of both Mikey Porter and Matthew Higgins, this will see the former Ginetta Junior driver pair up with a former Karter to continue their collective developmental steps up into GT4 racing within the multi-classed GT Cup Championship and their seven-round season.

Apart from more pre-season testing that the duo have already started with the team, their first formality together will be at the Official Test Day at Donington Park on 21st March.

More Aston Martin success in GT4 Winter Series in Portimao

Portimao turned out to be another successful venue in southern Europe for the Snetterton based Forsetti Motorsport team at the weekend as they and their Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 drivers again enjoyed multiple visits to the podium within the GT4 Winter Series.

Having debuted together last weekend at Estoril, drivers Mikey Porter and Jamie Day carried on from where they had left off last week but with the Racar Motorsport AMRE pairing of Mathieu Martins and Roberto Faria still pushing them hard along the way.

Thankfully, the rains had finally passed the venue by and all three races over the weekend were able to be run on a completely dry track. Like last time, the GT4 Winter Series would run Qualifying and the first 30minute solo driver race on Saturday before the second solo driver race and 60minute endurance race for both drivers later in the day.

Porter and Martins would be first out on Saturday with Porter having his first front row start in P2 with Martins close behind in P3. For Porter, the experience of Martins over the former Ginetta racer would see the two Aston Martins quickly change positions before Porter dropped to P4 overall and in Class.

A timely pass around the McLaren saw Porter move back up to P3 with still half the race remaining where Martins would enter the race’s fastest lap of the race on the final lap of the race as a slowing Mercedes up ahead gave him cause to chase. Unfortunately for him, time ran out as he came home a close second with Porter coming home in third for another AMR 2-3 in class.

For the opening race on Sunday, it was Day against Faria in the AMR stakes and again experience proved pivotable as Day ran another impressive lights to flag winning race whilst the young Faria again fell into the temptation on unnecessary contact early into his 30-minute race hampering his potential. The #9 Racar AMR would finish P5.

To round the second round of the season off, it was the hour-long pit stop and driver change punctuated endurance race where the #19 Forsetti car again outperformed in Qualifying the #9 Racar AMR with Porter starting from pole position and with Martins third on the grid.

Like race 1 earlier, Porter soon found himself being passed by the faster and more experienced around him to form another AMR 2-3 at the front of the pack but with the Racar Aston again in front.

Despite a prolonged Safety Car for a stranded car on track, that would be the running order into the pit window as Porter stopped first but with Martins hanging it out till later. As the available pit window came to an end, Day quickly established the race lead with Faria having dropped to P4 before he suffered a technical issue that saw him slow on track before retiring in pit lane for another DNF of his GT4 Winter Series campaign.

For Day, he would maintain the gap from those chasing to complete another triple podium visiting race weekend that keeps his and Porter Championship hopes very much alive as the series moves onto Jerez in early February.

D'Station Racing confirm their WEC/LM24 driver line up

Having revealed just the one driver at the time of their confirmation of acceptance into Season 12 of the World Endurance Championship back in late November last year, the Japanese based team today confirmed the remaining detail for the Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 entry this year.

As previously hinted at the end of last season, both Team Manager Tomonobu Fujii and team owner Satoshi Hoshino both take a step back from racing duties as Marco Sorensen will be joined by French drivers Erwan Bastard and Clement Mateu for the eight round 2024 season with the exception of the Le Mans 24hr in June.

Today’s press release confirmed that Bronze rated Hoshino will replace Mateu within the #777 car for the 92nd Edition of the event at the Circuit de La Sarthe in France.

With Fujii returning to managerial role within the team, today’s news was certainly nothing like what was expected as Erwan technically steps up another level from GT3 racing within the GT World Challenge Series and GT4 European Series with Audi to the brand new LMGT3 iteration of the new 2024 Vantage GT3 Evo having only tried out the 16A version of the car at the final round of the Ultimate Cup Series late last year.

Mateu comes from the ranks of Porsche Supercup ranks where he competed within the Pro-Am class but does also come with GT3 experience – his involvement with the D’Station Racing team does bring the Hexis trade name back into association with an AMR powered team.

Track action for the team is now not far away as the Prologue test (this time in Qatar) will take place in late February, ahead of the opening round in early March.

After the Roar comes the 24 for the Heart of Racing AMR team

The Heart of Racing Team goes into the Rolex 24 At Daytona looking to move forward to score a strong result in the 24 hour race next weekend at Daytona International Speedway. The No. 23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Vantage piloted by Ross Gunn will start 11th in class for Saturday January 27th’s race, while the No. 27 Aston Martin Vantage will start from 22nd in class.

The Roar Before the 24 weekend consisted of five test sessions through a wide range of different conditions during the unseasonably cold weekend to help prepare for the 24 hour race next weekend. The weekend closed with a 15 minute qualifying session on Sunday afternoon with cool windy conditions.

The No. 23 Heart of Racing GTD PRO entry with a driver lineup of Gunn, Alex Riberas, and Mario Farnbacher have 22 combined starts at the Rolex 24 At Daytona event and are prepared to make the most out of the enduro race. During the fourth test session of the weekend, Farnbacher found the top of the leaderboard with a 1:46.066 second lap.

Gunn will start the race for the No. 23 Heart of Racing squad from 11th after completing five laps in the Aston Martin Vantage. The 15 minute qualifying session was cut short due to a car going off and causing a lengthy red flag. As the clock counted down to 1:20 seconds left on the qualifying clock, IMSA added an additional 10 minutes to give the GT field a chance to get multiple laps under green flag conditions. Gunn ultimately crossed the finish line with a fast lap of 1:45.528 seconds.

The Heart of Racing team’s No. 27 GTD entry will feature Roman De Angelis, Zach Robichon, Marco Sorensen, and Ian James behind the wheel. Last year’s Rolex 24 At Daytona GTD winning team looks to repeat history with the addition of Robichon to the lineup. The No. 27 team focused on perfecting pit stops and gaining as many laps as possible in preparation for next weekend's twice around the clock classic.

De Angelis qualified the No. 27 Aston Martin Vantage machine for the team, but was unfortunately only able to complete two timed laps after a technical issue forced a return to the pits. Before he would have a chance to return the checkered flag flew, the Canadian will look to move up from the 18th row on the grid next weekend.

The 62nd edition of the Rolex 24 At Daytona will take the green flag at 1:40 pm ET on Saturday January 27th.

Round 2 of the GT4 Winter Series from an early wet Portimao circuit this weekend

Whilst those at Daytona are only now readying themselves for the start of their 2024 season, those competing within the southern Europe GT4 Winter Series will be getting ready for their second round of the season so far from an unfortunately wet Portimao circuit in Portugal.

After their stellar performances within the opening three races of the season at Estoril last weekend, Aston Martin Racing powered teams Forsetti Motorsport and Racar Motorsport will be obviously hoping to continue that trend after their crews visiting the class podium in all but one occasion for one team.

Despite those results, the #19 Forsetti Motorsport AMR of Mikey Porter and Jamie Day find themselves sitting second within the Pro Class, just 2.5 points behind whilst the #9 Racar Motorsport entry of Roberto Faria and Mathieu Martins sits in P4.

Mirroring the entry of the opening round with sixteen cars again entering the multi-class grid of the GT4 Winter Series, the framework of the weekend will again see each driver compete within a solo thirty-minute race before concluding the weekend with a sixty-minute, pit stop punctuated endurance race.

Now, let’s just see if it actually stops raining this time!!
