The Heart of Racing Valkyrie secures its best finish to date around the Circuit de La Sarthe

Aston Martin’s stunning Valkyrie Hypercar achieved its best finish yet at the Circuit de la Sarthe, with British trio Tom Gamble, Ross Gunn and Harry Tincknell bringing the Aston Martin THOR Team #007 Valkyrie home eighth in the 94thedition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, on Sunday.

The result marked the fifth consecutive FIA World Endurance Championship points finish for the British-built hypercar, following the #007 crew’s strong start to the 2026 season where they finished ninth in Imola, and followed that up with Valkyrie’s best WEC finish yet; fourth at Spa-Francorchamps, last month.

“To get a car home in P8 is a big step forward for the programme,” said Ian James., Team Principal of Aston Martin Racing THOR Team. “It just shows how much progress we are making with the car, every race. We knew it would be a difficult for us to race against such strong opposition here at Le Mans but we worked hard and executed on all levels. It was great to see the #007 rewarded for the team’s hard work.”

Developed by Aston Martin and THOR from the Valkyrie production model, the Le Mans Hypercar version, eighth place was also the best finish at Le Mans for a car derived from a road-legal hypercar. Valkyrie is unique as the only car built to Hypercar homologation competing simultaneously in WEC and the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.

The Valkyries impressed through the build-up to the race, setting the fastest time of all in the official test and then proved a force in Hypercar qualifying. The #009 Valkyrie, driven by Marco Sørensen, Alex Riberas and Roman De Angelis, placed seventh and the #007 11th.

The 62-strong field, waved away from the start line by Aston Martin High Performance Ambassador Sir Mark Cavendish (the former professional cyclist who holds the record for the most stage wins of the Tour de France), in front of 350,000-strong crowd, set a blazing pace in the early running. But by nightfall both Valkyries, emblazoned in special liveries featuring Union Jack, were into their stride and racing inside the top ten.

Ultimately it was the #007 which achieved the best result of the two; the #009 had been heading for its first points finish of the season until a technical issue in the final hour caused the team to pit, dropping the car from 10th in the WEC Hypercar class to 14th in the final order.

“This year’s Le Mans provided another encouraging step in Valkyrie’s WEC journey,” said Aston Martin Head of Endurance, Adam Carter. “Valkyrie’s pace on low fuel during the early part of the week was nice to see but also a little unrealistic when it came to the race, as a straightline speed deficit hampered us more once we switched to race trim. That said the team executed without fault as always, and this played a significant factor in us achieving a well-earned points finish in one of the toughest endurance races in the world.”

Podium success and late heartache at the end of the Spa 6Hr yesterday

Podium success and late heartache at the end of the Spa 6Hr yesterday

Another incredible round of the FIA World Endurance Championship came our way yesterday from Spa Francorchamps, Belgium as the four Heart of Racing Aston Martin powered crews went about their usual competitive game plan which this time earned one crew podium success but at the cost of broken hearts for another.

Unlike the preceding two days of track preparation, the early afternoon start to yesterday’s six-hour race came under glorious blue skies and warming sunshine as the thirty-five cars within the Hypercar and LMGT3 gathered on the grid in front of another sizeable crowd.

Qualifying the day before had seen both Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercars reach the Hyperpole session for the first time as good pace during Free Practice had put decent qualifying positions very much on the cards with the #009 car of Marco Sorenson/Alex Riberas just out doing the #007 car of Harry Tincknell/Tom Gamble in P6 and P7 respectively.

Within LMGT3, the experience within the #27 AMR Vantage car of Ian James/Zacharie Robichon/Mattia Drudi again proved pivotable as they secured a P2 start after their class Hyperpole session whilst Gray Newell still did well in his first WEC visit to the circuit to qualify P13 in a car that he shares with Jonny Adam and Eduardo Barrichello.

The race final got underway after two warm up laps behind the Safety Car with all the entries surviving the initial bumping around the opening laps as race pace was quickly determined by those cars at the front in class but whilst initially losing a small number of places each, all four cars were looking good.

An early Safety Car for a car off in the gravel reset the pack after just twenty minutes but once the race got back underway, the next biggest challenge for those on track was when the hypercar recaught and made their way through the LMGTs tail enders which saw a car from each class make through the gravel for an untidy show of driving skills from those concerned.

Whilst Newell had kept his copybook clean as far as track limits were concerned in Qualifying, he was unfortunately racking them in during his first two hours aboard the #23 car, something that would cost him and his team-mates two additional visit to the pit lane in penalties.

At the halfway point, all bronze and silver ranked drivers had now had at least one stint apiece within their respective GT car whilst all four hypercar drivers were still holding a mid-table position whilst not favouring still the medium tyre. Further Full Course Yellow calls for debris and later a collision between a leading hypercar and an LMGT3 at Les Combes – something which lead to something of another prolonged delay to the race.

Two hours still remained as there seemed to be a distinct downturn in ambient temperature at the top of the circuit, but the #27 Vantage crew had come back through the field to third in class, but the two green hypercars were still importantly where they both started in sixth and seventh.

Disaster would however strike down the #009 car of Riberas as, at another Safety Car restart and whilst attempting to overtake the Alpine onto the Kemmel Straight, that wheels left the track surface and for the Valkyrie to spin, crossing the track before hitting the outside wall with sufficient force to smash the front quarter of the car putting the #009 into immediate retirement.

Another Safety Car clean-up operation left just twenty-five minutes with Gamble getting the final stint to the flag aboard the #007. Drudi was still aboard his #27 car, and he was still pushing for an improved class podium position – then in third but a time penalty for then leader would move them up one at the end.

As the chequered flag fell, the race pace of the #007 had just fallen away towards the end despite being on the ‘better for them’ softs as they finished their season best in fourth with the #27 Vantage LMGT3 crew also getting their first podium of the year – second in class. The #23 Vantage LMGT3 would complete their first WEC race together as a driving trio in P13 as eyes now move to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Valkyrie hits fine form and the #27 car the front row in class as the Spa 6hr gets ready in Qualifying today

Valkyrie hits fine form and the #27 car the front row in class as the Spa 6hr gets ready in Qualifying today

Two days of race preparation are now on the bag for the thirty-five FIA World Endurance Championship squads ahead of tomorrow’s six hours of Spa Francorchamps with the Aston Martin powered crews also showing some of their best performances to date.

Thursdays two Free Practice sessions were ran upon what was then a very green track after persistent rain through the early part of the week but whilst both the #23 and #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 crews did struggle for pace in the morning session, the season debuting crew of Gray Newell, Jonny Adam and Eduardo Barrichello surprised all by being quickest in class at the end of the day.

There were also very encouraging performances from both Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar crews of Harry Tinknell/Tom Gamble aboard the #007 and Alex Riberas/Marco Sorenson aboard the #009 after the #009 finished P2 overall in the more challenging conditions of Thursday morning and then fifth quickest in the afternoon whilst the #007 was also within the top ten in both.

Fridays final Free Practice 3 session was ran in the best track conditions yet as warming air and clearer skies finally moved above the Spa circuit which this time allowed the #007 Valkyrie to show its pace with a third fastest time in class (#009 strangely at its lowest position this weekend in twelfth) whilst the two Vantage GT3 crews finished the session 6thand 15th in favour of the more experienced crew of Ian James, Mattia Drudi and Zacharie Robichon after a multiple Full Course Yellow interrupted session.

That left just Qualifying and possibly Hyperpole left for all to do and it was the LMGT3 class out again first for their fifteen minute session and whilst Newell would closely follow James around for the first couple of laps, the experience gap between them soon became evident as James secured the #27 car a position within the next Hyperpole session but Newell had to make do with (a still mightily impressive) P13.

A further twelve-minute session for (this time around) the #27 cars silver graded driver in Robichon saw the Canadian push to the end to split the two Lexus cars to grab a front row start in P2 for his efforts.

The Hypercar class cars were out next with both Tincknell and Sorenson continuing their cars fine run of form in Belgium to get both cars through to Hyperpole for the first time ever albeit from a last lap dash for the #009. Despite pushing the performance envelope in the final session were the #009 car was near the fastest car on track at the time, both crews were eventually pushed back down the order (mainly thanks to the compulsory use of the Michelin medium tyre in Hyperpole)to still claim a project best performance in the series in P6 and P7 for the #009 and #007 respectively.

Saturday’s six-hour race will still be another challenge altogether for all four Heart of Racing crews as it will of course be race pace which will ultimately dictate just where each car will be in class as the chequered flag falls at 20:00hrs local.

IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship back for another sprint round from Laguna Seca this weekend

IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship back for another sprint round from Laguna Seca this weekend

It’s back to the west coast of America for the latest sprint round of the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship as they embark upon two-hours-forty-minute sprint races of recent weeks – this time from the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Last time out from the improvised road circuit of Long Beach California we had not just the two full season Aston Martin GTP and Aston Martin Racing GTD entries from the Heart of Racing team but also a second GTD from the Van Der Steur AMR team as they took a look at what lies beyond the Endurance Cup rounds in the IMSA series.

Luckily for us, this weekend coming is no different as the #23 Valkyrie GTP and #27 AMR Vantage GTD entries from the HoRT are again bolstered by the presence of the #19 Van Der Steur AMR Vantage GTD, although there will be a differing driver line within that car this time around.

Having raced at Long Beach two weeks ago before darting back to for the opening round of the British GT Championship last weekend, Ross Gunn will be back upon another trans-Atlantic flight this week just so that he can again pair up with his #23 co-driver, Roman De Angelis for something more rewarding to them than Long Beach was.

Getting nerfed off track after a Safety Car intervention put them a lap down and for a quick sprint race, there is no recovery from that in terms of race position.

The #27 HoRT Vantage GTD of then Eduardo Barrichello and Spencer Pumpelly also suffered to the strict IMSA ruleset after a great opening stint from ‘super-sub’ Pumpelly dropped them right back into the pack after they were given a drive through penalty for a pitstop transgression. They did however secure enough points to retain a now reduced lead within their Championship standing at this still early stage in the season.

The #27 car also reverts back to a more definable partnership of Barrichello and Tom Gamble who was otherwise engaged with the team within the World Endurance Championship last time out.

The #19 Van Der Steur entry of Rory Van Der Steur and Valentin Hasse-Clot was the highest finishing Aston last time out at Long Beach after their ‘toe in the water’ exercise landing the GT3 street racing novices a P8 in class finish.

This time around, however, Hasse-Clot is otherwise previously engaged with his European Le Mans Series and Michelin Le Mans Cup Series duties back in Europe so his place will be taken by the Australian racer Scott Andrews amongst a thirty-four car entry list of GTP’s, GTD Pro’s and GTD entries.

Two banker results for one half of the Heart of Racing garage after the opening 6hr round to the FIA WEC in Italy

Two banker results for one half of the Heart of Racing garage after the opening 6hr round to the FIA WEC in Italy

Sunday’s opening six-hour round to the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship from Imola in Italy could perhaps be explained as something of a character-building experience for one half of the Heart of Racing garage but a job well done (but still leaving room for improvement) for the other after another characteristically gruelling race.

Starting under the Italian sunshine, there was eagerness to continue along the impressive development and performance curve that the team has displayed with last years all new Aston Martin Valyrie Hypercar and with a well-rounded Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 package for what was now a two-car entry.

Qualifying on Saturday had not reflected the quicker pace of the Vantage LMGT3 and whilst the #007 Valkyrie had done well with their P9 starting position, the sister #009 car was still struggling for pace after having a new car built up after their Prologue Test accident earlier in the week.

Despite thirty-five Hypercar and LMGT3 cars taking to the start around the tighter and undulating historical circuit, all ran surprisingly smoothly with all four Heart of Racing cars running within their respective mid-field at the end of the opening hour.

Into the second hour and #27 Vantage LMGT3 of Ian James had already had five seconds added to his first pit stop time for his apparent starting procedure error whilst the #23 rookie Gray Newell was also learning things the hard way after getting firstly pinged for speeding within the pit lane before later getting a reprimand for not quite stopping within his designated pitstop box. Despite these, the young American was being otherwise impressive considering his short racing background.

By the end of the second hour of racing, both Valkyries had elevated themselves into the top ten in class whilst the two Vantages were still struggling for pace compared to most of the other OEM’s. Despite an earlier Safety Car intervention for a stranded car on track had not shortened the gap to their opponents up ahead.

Hour three into hour four and with the imminent threat of rain fast approaching, the status quo within both class sets was looking insecure for all as the #007 remained within the top 10 and the #27 Vantage was doing likewise in P8.

Unfortunately, with little over ninety minutes remaining, Mattia Drudi was forced to box the #27 car and for (presumably) technical reasons unknown, they would take no further part in the proceedings making for a second consecutive DNF at the circuit. The #009 Valkyrie would also drop off the chasing group to eventually finish P14 overall and one lap down to the winning Toyota.

The #007 meanwhile would continue to round off a decent opening race meeting for drivers Harry Tincknell and Tom Gamble as they would secure an encouraging P9 finish – a position twice as good as their first race around Imola in that car last year.

The #23 Vantage LMGT3 of Newell, Kobe Pauwels and Jonny Adam would also fare well in class despite the former Le Mans winners supporting two series rookies as they also finished P9 in class at the end of the six hours.

The team will now look forward to the next round to the season from the more favourable racetrack of Spa Francorchamps in Belgium in just a couple of weeks’ time.

Not an ideal start to the FIA WEC season but the Heart of Racing still came out on top at the end of the Prologue

Not an ideal start to the FIA WEC season but the Heart of Racing still came out on top at the end of the Prologue

Blink and you would have missed it as the FIA World Endurance Championship completed its mandatory Prologue test at Imola today having been forced to do so from global events.

Whilst we would have been pleased to say that all passed off without incident for the Heart of Racing team, that would sadly not be the case after Marco Sorensen suffered a heavy off in his #008 Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar during the wet morning session.

Without knowing too much about causation, the green V12 powered monster was seen spinning through the gravel before connecting heavily with the tyre protected circuit barrier causing significant damage to the car.

Whilst the Dane was able to extricate himself from the car and after mandatory medical assistance, was fortunately deemed fit to continue with the upcoming race weekend but the same couldn’t be said for the #009 car with the team now working hard to build up a new car utilising their spare monocoque in time for Fridays first Free Practice session.

Meanwhile, their sister #007 Hypercar of Harry Tincknell and Tom Gamble got in the laps and hence valuable data during the eight hours of track availability finishing the day just outside of the top ten within an extended class of seventeen cars.

It was better news however, across the team garage to where both Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3’s are prepared as Mattia Drudi powered the #27 car that he shares with Zacharie Robichon and Ian James to the top of the overall class leaderboard.

Their sister #23 car of Jonny Adam and a series debuting Kobe Pauwels and Gray Newell also fared well within the wet conditions finishing mid table in the results but with both debutant drivers getting in a decent number of laps between them.

That was of course just testing and the real business will begin on Friday ahead of Qualifying on Saturday and the start of this six-hour race opener at 13:00hrs local.

Heart of Racing secure back to back podium finishes in IMSA after the 12Hrs of Sebring

Heart of Racing secure back to back podium finishes in IMSA after the 12Hrs of Sebring

The Heart of Racing Aston Martin Racing team continued their fine start within the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship after a consecutive podium finish in class at the end of last night’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Coming off the back of a their class pole position and P3 finish at the end of the opening round to the season at the Rolex 24 at the beginning of February, the Zacharie Robichon, Eduardo Barrichello and Tom Gamble driven #27 GTD car went one better this time after converting the Brazilian pole position into a P2 finish to take an early lead in the GTD Drivers Championship.

There was also an improvement in racing fortunes (albeit just) compared to last season efforts for the #19 Van Der Steur Racing Vantage GTD entry for Rory Van Der Steur, Valentin Hasse-Clot and (this time) Sebastian Baud after they converted their P8 qualifying position into a P13 class finish. Their finishing position upon the timing and scoring board was however, despite the #19 coming to a halt upon track with apparent gearbox failure just before the ten hour mark with the #19 car being placed 79 laps down to the GTD class winner.

For the #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Valkyrie GTP entry of Ross Gunn, Roman De Angelis and Alex Riberas, however, there were further trackside issues for the V12 normally aspirated powerhouse that again (like Daytona) that took the car behind the wall for repairs.

Determination both on and off track eventually aw them again take the flag ninth in class but an overall twelve laps down to the eventual winners which co-incidentally equals their debut event into the series with the all-new platform last season.

The next round for the ISMA Series for the GTP and GTD’s at least will be around the streets of Long Beach California in just over three weeks’ time – a venue where both Heart of Racing entries have struggled before.

More milestones met for Valkyrie and another class podium in LMGT3 rounds off the WEC season

More milestones met for Valkyrie and another class podium in LMGT3 rounds off the WEC season

The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar concluded its debut season of global competition with a second-straight points finish, at the Bapco Energies 8 Hours of Bahrain, on Saturday, after leading a round of the FIA World Endurance Championship for the first time.

The seventh-place result for Aston Martin THOR Team’s #009 entry, driven by three-time WEC GT champion Marco Sørensen, Alex Riberas and Roman De Angelis, added to the fifth-place finish the team had taken last-time out in Japan on a weekend of notable landmarks for the unique 6.5-litre, V12-powered British hypercar.

A magnificent performance in Hypercar qualifying was the highlight of Saturday’s on-track action as the #007 entry of British trio Harry Tincknell, Tom Gamble and Ross Gunn led the #009 in an all-Valkyrie one-two; ensuring that both Aston Martin THOR Team cars would progress to the Hyperpole session and challenge for pole position for the first time. Sixth and ninth positions on the grid marked the first time two Valkyries had qualified inside the top 10 in the WEC.

Aston Martin’s first ‘Le Mans Hypercar showed more potential during the eight-hour race as, following a mid-race safety car period that bunched the field, Riberas charged from fifth place into the lead – the first time Valkyrie has headed a WEC race. It was a fitting end to a trail-blazing debut season that featured the car’s maiden podium finish in North America’s IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship in October’s gruelling Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Raced by the works Aston Martin THOR Team, it is the only car in WEC’s premier category derived from a road-legal hypercar and made its global debut in the Qatar 1812km in February over a grueling season that has covered more than 22,000 racing miles, and eight rounds of WEC (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans) for the two stunning, green Aston Martins.

“The aim for Aston Martin in Hypercar in 2025 was to compete in endurance racing at the very highest level of competition, both globally in WEC and in North America in IMSA,” said Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport. “Both are magnificent series with manufacturers, teams and drivers that have been at the pinnacle of the sport for, in some cases, decades. To have brought such a unique car as Valkyrie to the stage, to start where we did, and to consistently improve our performances to the point where we’ve come to the WEC finale in Bahrain and perform the way we have, shows the ability and desire of everybody that is a part of this programme. We have made satisfying progress in 2025 and will continue to build on this next season.”

Aston Martin’s most successful sportscar of all time, the Vantage meanwhile finished the FIA World Endurance Championship season with a podium finish in the LMGT3 class in Bahrain.

The Heart of Racing Team drivers Ian James, Zacharie Robichon and Mattia Drudi finished third in an action-packed race to claim the team’s first top-three finish of the season for the ultimate racing version of Aston Martin’s most focused sportscar.

The trio ran inside the top six throughout the race with Aston Martin works driver Drudi closing down a 30-second gap to the leaders with two hours to go to put himself in the hunt for victory in the closing stages.

THOR’s result was the second WEC podium finish of the season for Vantage, after Racing Spirit of Léman finished third in Brazil during the summer. It was also a 14th WEC rostrum finish for Vantage in Bahrain; those results scored across the LMGT3 class and its predecessors, LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am. RSL’s Anthony McIntosh, Eduardo Barrichello and Aston Martin works driver Valentin Hasse-Clot finished 14th in LMGT3 aboard their #10 Vantage.

“The ultra-close nature of the competition in WEC means that to fight at the front, you must have first-rate machinery and partner teams capable of delivering when it counts,” said Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport. “In The Heart of Racing Team and Racing Spirit of Léman we have two outstanding partners, who have both scored pole positions and podium finishes this year. This is a testament to the strength of both organisations, to the accessibility and robustness of Vantage to drivers of all levels of experience, and to a set of regulations that keeps the competing machines close. We are already looking ahead to a 2026 season.”

The difference as season makes for the Aston Martin Valkyrie

The difference as season makes for the Aston Martin Valkyrie

Since the opening round of the World Endurance Championship in Qatar way back at the end of February this year, it has been a long hard-fought path of progress and development for the Heart of Racing team and Aston Martin as they took their new Valkyrie Hypercar into global racing for the first time.

Since those early days of first just wanting to finish and to literally keep the doors on the car, many things have changed and so going into tomorrow’s seasonal finale in Bahrain, the fruits of that progress and development has been very apparent.

Running of course parallel race programs with their IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship sister car, recent results have seen at least one of these Valkyries first break into Hyperpole qualifying within the WEC before securing their first ever podium finish at the season finale of the IMSA Championship.

Having had many of the team and crew get in some last minute R&R on the Galapagos Islands before this week’s finale, that investment have proved worthwhile for the team as the #007 Valkyrie of Harry Tincknell, Tom Gamble and Ross Gunn topped the qualifying timing screen for the first time, narrowly beating the sister #009 car of Marco Sorenson, Alex Riberas and Roman De Angelis for a well-deserved 1-2 in class.

Moving into the later Hyperpole session, the fairytale season ending wasn’t quite there unfortunately as the #009 eventually finished sixth fastest with the #007 nineth ahead of tomorrow’s eight-hour race. Compare and contrast that to the distant P18 and P16 positions at the opening round in Qatar!!

It was harder work for the two Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 crews however, as both the #27 Heart of Racing AMR of Ian James, Mattia Drudi and Zacharie Robichon and the #10 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR of Anthony McIntosh, Eduardo Barrichello and Valentin Hasse-Clot struggled within the mid table of their class during the three earlier Free Practice sessions after another swathe of Balance of Performance adjustments across the class.

As always, one hot lap is never enough for any endurance race as (like all), both crews will have another eight hours to improve upon their P4 and P15 qualifying positions (for the #27 and #10 cars respectively) after their own Qualifying and Hyperpole sessions.

The final race of the FIA WEC season will be waved off at 14:00hrs local before finishing under the veil of darkness (although the circuit is mostly floodlit) where all four crews could seriously improve upon their final championship positions in class with thirty eight points being again on offer to each class winner.

More to come says Gunn after the #23 Valkyrie secures its first ever podium finish at Petit Le Mans

More to come says Gunn after the #23 Valkyrie secures its first ever podium finish at Petit Le Mans

Aston Martin’s breathtaking new Valkyrie Hypercar achieved its first podium finish anywhere in the world with a sensational run to finish second overall at the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta – the closing round of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship on Saturday.

The result, accomplished by Aston Martin Heart of Racing Team, was the best result yet by Valkyrie – the pure racing expression of the world’s ultimate road-going hypercar – and was secured after 10 hours of white-knuckle competition at the iconic circuit near Braselton, GA. It was the first outright podium for an Aston Martin in IMSA, and the first for a hypercar derived from a road-going counterpart in the top tier GTP class.

Valkyrie had already made headlines on Thursday by topping the timesheets in an official IMSA session for the first time as Ross Gunn went fastest in night practice followed by Gunn taking the hypercar’s best qualifying result to date with fifth place on Friday.

De Angelis and Gunn, THOR’S regular IMSA season drivers, were joined at Petit Le Mans by Alex Riberas; part of Aston Martin THOR Team’s FIA World Endurance Championship line-up and a multiple race winner in IMSA’s GTD classes.

All three drove magnificently and backed up by some clever strategic calls from the pit crew, raced Valkyrie #23 into a podium spot with two hours to go. An inspired decision to make a final pitstop with 50 minutes left, rather than speculatively staying out in case of a Full-Course Yellow period which could have allowed the car’s energy reserves to be stretched without an additional stop, meant that De Angelis ran at full attack to the end of the race.

Despite dropping to seventh, 50 seconds behind the leader, he charged back into contention while gaining positions as the track remained ‘green’ and others made their final fuel stops. The Valkyrie slotted into second with less than 10 minutes remaining. De Angelis closed to within six seconds of the victory while securing the best result for Valkyrie in all competitions, completing an IMSA season in which the car finished every race and completed over 4,300 miles of hard racing around eight of the most iconic North American motorsport venues.

The only entry derived from a road-going hypercar competing in either IMSA or the WEC, Valkyrie is developed from its production version by Aston Martin and THOR. The competition example blends a race-optimised carbon fibre chassis with a modified 6.5-litre V12 powerplant that revs to 11,000rpm and produces over 1000bhp in standard form, but adheres to a strict 500kw (680bhp) power limit as per hypercar regulations.

Valkyrie has positioned Aston Martin in the top division of US sportscar racing for the first time since 2011; a season in which five outright victories and seven podiums were achieved in the American Le Mans Series.

“What a day! To score the first podium for Valkyrie and finish second at Petit Le Mans is a testament to the hard work everybody’s put in, not just this year, but across the whole project from the group in the UK and the Aston Martin THOR Team here on the ground. The execution was pretty much perfect, and the drivers excelled. It’s been a great year in IMSA for Valkyrie, and I can’t wait for the new season to start at Daytona in January” said Team Principle Ian James after the chequered flag.

Best result yet for the new Heart of Racing Valkyrie Hypercar in its debut WEC season (updated)

Best result yet for the new Heart of Racing Valkyrie Hypercar in its debut WEC season (updated)

Aston Martin’s new Valkyrie hypercar celebrated the British performance brand’s 100th race in the FIA World Endurance Championship, by achieving its best finish yet in its debut season, as well as delivering Aston Martin’s best overall finish in the world’s premier sportscar series.

The works Aston Martin The Heart Of Racing Team, and drivers Marco Sørensen and Alex Riberas finished sixth in the 6 Hours of Fuji, marking a new high in the programme, having delivered front-running pace throughout the weekend in Japan.

Aston Martin is one of three manufacturers to have competed in every WEC race since the series’ inception in 2012. Having claimed 53 class victories and 11 world championship titles in that time, it was fitting that the brand should achieve its best result so far for the Hypercar programme at the series’ centennial event.

“While finishing sixth in the 6 Hours of Fuji is a commendable result, given the fact the programme is still so young, the highly competitive performance delivered by the Aston Martin THOR Team, Valkyrie, and both the drivers, was hugely encouraging,” said Aston Martin Head of Endurance, Adam Carter.

“Just as in the Lone Star Le Mans at The Circuit of The Americas earlier in the month, Valkyrie was able to race near the front of the field. And in Fuji it demonstrated enough pace to make it a genuine podium contender. Had we not witnessed such an eventful race, I don’t believe it is unrealistic to think we could have claimed one of the top positions in the race. That is a huge testament to the team and another example of the positive momentum we are building within the programme.”

Never out of the top five in all three free practice sessions, three-time GT world champion Sørensen qualified fastest for Saturday’s prestigious Hyperpole session before ultimately securing a place on the inside of the second row of the grid for Sunday’s race.

The Dane was tasked with starting what proved to be a chaotic race neutralised no less than six times because of lengthy full course yellow periods. The #009 Aston Martin Valkyrie ran a comfortable third initially, shadowing the leaders with pace in hand until the first of those FCYs. He then dropped to the back of the Hypercar Class pack with a drive-through penalty, before unleashing a breathtaking charge to rise again through the order.

Riberas was faced with a similar task as frequent FCYs put the Valkyrie out of track position through no fault of the team, but the Spaniard delivered an exceptional performance to calmly navigate all the drama and climb as high as fourth.

When Sørensen returned to the car for his final stint, he was often the fastest driver/car combination on track, but a final stop to take on four fresh tyres while those around him settled for two, ultimately put a maiden podium tantalisingly out of reach as he raced past the #7 Toyota and the 6 Hours of São Paulo-winning Cadillac to finish sixth.

“When you look back to Qatar at the start of the season a result like this would have seemed like a dream,” said Aston Martin THOR Team principal Ian James. “Now we’re a little frustrated not to have achieved a podium finish. We have become more and more competitive and we will keep pushing. We are racing against the best sportscar teams in the world and we can hold our heads high after that performance.”

The result meant that Sørensen and Riberas became the first Aston Martin drivers to claim world championship points in WEC’s top class. It was the second points finish for the team, which scored two points for finishing 12th in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

“That was one crazy race,” said Sørensen. “There was so much going on, with so many FCYs and Safety Cars, it made the race very difficult to manage in a lot of areas. I think we did the most we could in the circumstances. We made a few mistakes, but in the end, we had good pace and it kind of feels like we were fast enough to be on the podium. I think the pace we showed today, where we were fighting right at the front, just showed how far the whole programme has come since Qatar. I’m sure that we’re going to keep building on this, as we have all season and we will try again in Bahrain.”

Riberas added: “This does feel a little bittersweet, as crazy as it sounds. Firstly, huge congratulations to the team. To say we are not completely happy to have finished sixth, when you think back to where we were at the beginning of the programme, is definitely a very good sign. But today was one of those races where everything was just so unpredictable, when all we needed was just a clean run to have a shot at the podium!”

Developed from the Valkyrie production car by Aston Martin and THOR, the competition version blends a race-optimised carbon fibre chassis with a modified 6.5-litre V12 powerplant that revs to 11,000rpm and produces over 1000bhp in standard form, but adheres to a strict 500kw (680bhp) power limit as per regulations.

The final round of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship will take place in Bahrain, on Saturday, 8 November.

UPDATE - A late post race penalty for another competitor sees them given a post race time penalty in lieu of a drive through penalty and that now lifts the #009 car up to P5 in class.
