Not the overall win, but two class wins plus some none the less after the Spa 24
Aston Martin recorded two class victories in the 77th running of the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa on Sunday, in front of 128,000 spectators, as Vantage achieved an unprecedented level of success in the famous Belgian endurance classic. The British ultra-luxury high performance brand, which won the race outright in 2024 with its Vantage GT3, added to its legacy of glory at the venue with victories in the Gold and Silver Cup classes and runner-up in the Pro-Am division; the best collective result for the Wings in the GT3-era of the event.
Partner team Verstappen Racing, and its drivers Thierry Vermeulen, Harry King and Chris Lulham delivered a brilliant debut 24-hour race performance with their Aston Martin Vantage GT3 finishing ninth overall, ahead of several Pro Class contenders, and overcoming a fierce challenge from a rival McLaren in the second half of the race to win the Gold Cup Class.
The victory, taken from the class pole position, was emphatic and marked the team’s first with Aston Martin in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Vermeulen, who took the lead of the class in the final 10 minutes as the McLaren he was racing suffered a puncture. “For sure a lot of preparation went into it, learning the car, and plenty of testing, and I think the car has been in a very good window, with good support from Aston Martin, so a very big thanks to them. Then of course my teammates, the team… it’s a long race and very demanding. I think we have learned so much and I hope we can come back next year, because with some fine-tuning on some minor things for sure we can do even better. We’re very proud of everyone and I’m super happy that I had the privilege to be here and to achieve this.”

Having led comfortably through the first half of the race and climbed as high as second overall in the early hours of the morning, Verstappen.com Racing came under pressure from the McLaren after a Full Course Yellow at an inopportune moment compromised the team’s track position on Sunday morning. But Vermeulen and Lulham produced robust stints to keep the Vantage just ahead of the curve, while their teammate King unleashed one of the overtakes of the race to secure the class lead in the 22ndhour. The McLaren came back at them in the final pit stops however, regaining track position and so Vermeulen pressed hard, never more than two seconds away and was in the prime position to take advantage when his rival hit trouble in the final stages.
Walkenhorst Motorsport dominated the second half of the Silver Class, with its #35 Vantage GT3 finishing 14th overall. It was a just reward for the German team which had absorbed its fair share of adversity over the past week, with several accidents putting its engineers under pressure in the run-up to the event and the preceding ADAC Ravenol 24h Nürburgring. One of those accidents eliminated the #34 Pro Class car, driven by works drivers Henrique Chaves, David Pittard and Christian Krognes, after a crash in Super Pole on Friday.
For the victorious Silver Cup driver and former Aston Martin Racing Driver Academy graduate Romain Leroux, who shared the car with 2025 Academy candidates Oliver Söderström and Mateo Villagomez, the victory was even sweeter having been shunted into retirement from a podium position in last year’s race.
“I think it is the perfect gift back to the team, it’s definitely not been the easiest week,” said Leroux. “We had a lot of pace in the Pro car so to lose it even before the race began was very tough. The team bounced back very well, we didn’t lose focus, and we showed the pace the car had and us as drivers gave the team back the result they deserved.”
In a hotly-contested Pro-Am class, Beechdean Motorsport followed up its British GT Silver-Am Class victory at the same venue last week with an outstanding second place for Andrew Howard, Ross Gunn, Valentin Hasse-Clot and Anthony McIntosh – making his Spa 24 Hours debut in this year’s event.
The #100 Beechdean Motorsport car led the class comfortably for several periods of the race but lost track position into the morning, whereby its two works drivers aided by Howard and McIntosh staged a phenomenal charge, in searing heat, in the late stages to finish less than 25 seconds behind the winner.
Comtoyou Racing, which recorded Aston Martin’s magnificent win in 2024 returned with the same works driver line-up of former FIA WEC GT champions Marco Sørensen, Nicki Thiim and 2023 GT World Challenge Sprint Cup title-winner Mattia Drudi. The trio, and their #007 Vantage GT3, qualified eighth overall and were a key factor in the first third of the race. Moving into third position after midnight in a race where the top ten was rarely separated by more than 10 seconds through the night, Drudi had begun to exert significant pressure on the leading Mercedes duo when he encountered a technical issue that sidelined the car. It was a sad end to the Italian’s 24-hour triple header (24 Hours of Le Mans, Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps) with Aston Martin.
Adam Carter, Head of Endurance Motorsport, said: “To win multiple classes of the 24 Hours of Spa, with different partner teams, and come close to recording a triple, is a huge testament to the quality of the teams we choose to work with. Moreover, it is the perfect demonstration of the pace, adaptability and compliance of the Vantage GT3 to triumph in one of the world’s most demanding endurance races on earth. Congratulations to Verstappen.com Racing and to Walkenhorst Motorsport on outstanding performances and to Beechdean Motorsport for its hard fought second place in Pro-Am.”

Comtoyou Racing back at Spa Francorchamps this weekend for the Spa 500
Having just completed a two-day Prologue Test at the Circuit ahead of the Crowdstrike Spa 24 Hour race at the end of June, the locally based Comtoyou Racing team will be back at Spa Francorchamps circuit this weekend for what might not just be a one-off event.
Entering one of the new 2024 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s, the team have entered their two latest and youngest drivers Matisse Lismont and Lorens Lecertua into this weekend’s visit by the International GT Open Series.
Already competing within the GT World Challenge Europe Series in both the Endurance and Sprint Cup, the team has elected to get these two young drivers more competitive seat time within the elongated two hours forty-minute race (+ one lap) that the Spa 500 and third round of the Series will offer.
This entry increases the provisional grid count to thirty-six entries.

Three Aston Martin Vantage GT3 head to Belgium next week for the Spa 24
This year’s seventy fourth edition of the Belgian Endurance classic that starts next weekend again sees itself as the third round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup after previous rounds at both Imola and most recently at Paul Ricard.
Featuring the two full season GTWCE entries from the Beechdean Aston Martin Racing team, their two Vantage GT3 crews will also be joined in Belgium by the American Heart of Racing team.
With a grid of sixty-five cars already confirmed across the available Pro, Pro-Am and Am classes, Beechdean AMR’s full #95 car Pro line up retains their usual driver crew of Marco Sorenson, Nicki Thiim and Maxime Martin whilst their sister #97 Gold Cup cars adds Canadian IMSA racer Roman De Angelis into the fray with crew regulars Andrew Howard, Valentin Hasse-Clot and Theo Nouet.
For the #23 Heart of Racing AMR Vantage GT3 that will again be prepared and ran by the TF Sport team, they have also brought over their two IMSA GTD Pro drivers of Alex Riberas and Ross Gunn to drive alongside Charlie Eastwood in their Pro effort.
We see today that AMR have been shaking down a new chassis for the #95 Beechdean crew after it was found that their original chassis was more damaged than first envisaged after an off for Sorenson in the early sessions of the GTWCE Paul Ricard round. Although seemingly repaired enough at the trackside at that event for the crew to compete in the 1000kms of Paul Ricard in early June, their later attendance at the Spa 24 Test Days found further significant damage within the chassis that excluded the car from running for much of the test.
Today’s news of a shakedown test at Snetterton with a ‘new Vantage GT3’ confirms that a new chassis was the only solution to the issues found.
Championship wise, it hasn’t been the greatest of starts for either Beechdean car with a gearbox issue taking out the #97 car at Imola as well as a communications mix up regarding pit stop strategy for the #97 at the same event followed by the crash issues for the #95 in France with a lowly points finish there too for the #97 – so the additional points that the Spa 24 will hand out (if successful at those milestones) will be critical to their future campaign in this Series.
Track action begins next Tuesday with the Bronze Driver test before the events annual parade through the streets of Spa Francorchamps on Wednesday. Thursday then sees the first Free Practice, Pre-Qualifying and then Qualifying sessions before the all-important night testing later one. Warm up and then Super Pole then interrupts the support races diary on Friday before the start of the 24-hour race at 16:45hrs local.
It will be fast – it will be busy – it will be exciting as the Spa 24 always is! Will it be wet at all as well we ponder quietly to ourselves!
Good luck to them and wishing all a safe race.

Successful Spa 24 Test for the three Aston Martin Racing GT3 crews
Three beautiful cars, two days around one of the best racetracks in the world saw the Total Energies 24 Hours of Spa Official Test conclude today with both the Beechdean AMR and Heart of Racing with TF Sport Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crews putting in the necessary set-up mileage ahead of the main event scheduled for the end of July.
News came late of the partnership between TF Sport and American IMSA team, the Heart of Racing to enter another AMR into the SRO’s flagship and premier GT3 event for ‘their’ drivers Ross Gunn and Alex Riberas alongside TF’s own resident ‘pocket rocket’ Charlie Eastwood in another Pro class entry to go alongside that of the #95 Beechdean AMR Pro car of Nicki Thiim, Marco Sorenson and Maxime Martin.
What came even later to that was news from the circuit on Monday of that partnership extending into one of the full season Beechdean AMR GT3 crews as Heart of Racing confirmed that IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship Sprint Cup and AMR Drivers Academy winner Roman de Angelis would be joining Andrew Howard and his Gold Cup do-drivers of Valentin Hasse-Clot and Theo Nouet aboard their #97 Gold Cup car.
Running over four sessions over the two days available, it comes as no surprise that none of these cars featured towards the top of the timing screens as that isn’t what AMR teams tend to do – rather work methodically through own programme of works ahead of the main race weekend.
At the end of today’s final session, the #95 Beechdean was unsurprisingly the fastest Aston Martin finishing P18 overall whilst the #23 Heart of Racing Pro car finished P38 and the #97 Gold Cup classed Beechdean in P45 out of the sixty-two cars than that ran in the test.
Emphasis for many now turns to this weekend’s IMSA round from Watkins Glen as Gunn, De Angelis, Riberas and Martin flew off the to the USA for that whilst Hasse-Clot flies south for the next round of the FFSA GT4 from Albi and undoubtedly, Eastwood will be on AMR Academy duty somewhere else in Europe too!

Heart of Racing to enter Spa 24 with TF Sport
Alex Riberas, Ross Gunn, and Charlie Eastwood make up the driver lineup behind Heart of Racing’s team-first entry into the 24 Hours of Spa.
The team will enter this year's race in partnership with TF Sport, a team that is no stranger to Heart of Racing’s weapon of choice: an Aston Martin Vantage GT3. Both Heart of Racing and TF Sport are official race partners of Aston Martin Racing and have been for several years.
The team will enter this year's race in partnership with TF Sport, a team that is no stranger to Heart of Racing’s weapon of choice: an Aston Martin Vantage GT3. Both Heart of Racing and TF Sport are official race partners of Aston Martin Racing and have been for several years.
The Heart of Racing team, which usually competes in the United States, will tackle the gruelling 24 hours for their first overseas entry in a GT3 car.
“The Spa 24 is one of our bucket list races,” says HOR Team Principal Ian James. “Logistically, it was impossible for us to do it alone this year. Joining forces with a top caliber team like TF Sport in the hunt for one of endurance racing’s crown jewels is a great opportunity all around.”
Riberas, Gunn, and Eastwood have each driven the 24 Hours of Spa during their careers but will debut together in the Pro class at this year’s race. Riberas described returning to the Spa 24hr in an Aston Martin as part of this program as “exciting and motivating”.
“We are under no illusions of how challenging this race is. The GT3 teams we’ll be up against are the best in the world and their knowledge of the cars and championship is as deep as it gets,” James says. “We hope to be in the mix and we trust Alex, Ross, Charlie, and the Aston Vantage GT3 will get us there.”

Split fortune for Garage 59 at weather affected GTWC Sprint Cup at Zandvoort
Having enjoyed the warmth and of Many-Cours first time out at the beginning of May, torrential rain over the circuit on Friday put paid to the warm temperatures and sunshine leading up to the event and also tossed the race timetable at the track up into the air as many sessions were cut short or even abandoned as the water levels rose around the track.
Back for Qualifying early Saturday morning, the rain had at least stopped but the wind had picked up, whipping up the sand from the dunes making some corners treacherous.
Again running two AMR Vantage GT3’s in the series - #188 Pro-Am entry for both Alex West and Jonny Adam and the #159 Silver Cup car for Tuomas Tujula and Nicolai Kjaergaard, it was the turn of the former drivers to Qualify their cars for the days one hour race with the #159 starting from P10 overall and the #188 from P26.
With Adam going on record as wanting consistency from the two races and preferably with two podium finishes for the #188 Pro-Am car, the bar was already set pretty high considering the tight and twisty characteristics of the old school Dutch racetrack.
Whilst West displayed a cautious approach to the race, Tujula was ambitious from the off as he went around the outside of cars at the first corner on the opening lap showing himself up as third fastest on track in the opening laps. Moving up to and holding P9 overall and P6 in class, the #159 was looking good as the halfway point whilst West had done what he needed to do by keeping up with the pack and not planting the car in any of the sand dunes or gravel traps nearby as both cars pitted.
Trouble soon struck the #159 car however, as Kjaergaard as he spun going into the final, banked turn of the lap – assisted or not we don’t know but the result was damage to the car that soon saw it confine itself to the pit lane for an unpalatable DNF.
Barring a brief FCY for debris, Adam was unable to do much about the #188’s time deficit on track eventually finishing P23 overall but more importantly finishing to claim P4 in class.
Sunday’s second race of the weekend had the race 1 finishing driver take the morning Qualifying session and this time the #188 car of Adam headed the team’s two cars as Kjaergaard struggled at the rear in P23.
Whilst the opening lap were thankfully devoid of any incident, Adam would suffer a spin after contact with another car just six minutes of racing (again not seen on camera) and that would drop him down from his then P16 down to last on track.
With the Aston’s appearing a bit ‘sluggish’ compared to others, that and the tight racing line make it tight for the two Garage 59 cars to progress much before the mandatory stops. The #159 car was first to come in with Kjaergaard handing over to Tujula from P18 whilst Adam waited until the last possible moment of the window to hand over to West from a (then) P4 position.
By the time of the chequered flag, the #159 had lifted itself up to P15 overall and P8 in class to at least get some more points on the board whilst the #188 car would come home P21 overall but importantly P2 in class.
These results lift the #188 crew up to the top of the Pro-Am Championship after two rounds with just the Spa 24 test weekend interrupting the series run into the next round of the Sprint Cup at Misano at the beginning of July.

Looking forward at British GT at Brands Hatch
After the thrills and spills of Spa Francorchamps the week before last comes this weekend's penultimate round of the 2019 British GT Championship around the full Grand Prix circuit of Brands Hatch in Kent.
For a quarter of the Aston Martin Racing customer team contingent, Spa was a silverware winning success with Optimum Motorsport's Ollie Wilkinson and Bradley Ellis taking a convincing lights to flag overall win in their AMR Vantage GT3 which was backed up over in the GT4 class with the top and third placed steps of that podium being occupied by the two TF Sport AMR Vantage GT4's of Tom Canning/Ashley Hand and Patrick Kibble/Josh Price respectively.
For many of the usual AMR runners, last weekend also included their participation in the Blancpain GT's 24 Hours of Spa where TF Sport came away with a Pro-Am overall win in the car that Jonny Adam and Graham Davidson normally race in British GT. For those two individuals, Spa was extremely painful in two ways as Adam's Garage 59 AMR was forced into early retirement with mechanical issues whilst Davidson ended up in the local hospital following an accident in the Lamborghini that he was sharing. Thankfully, Davidson has already confirmed that he will be fully fit to race again at Brands Hatch after observation and treatment to his elbow following a side on impact with the crash barrier at Spa.
As for their Vantage GT3, the short travelling distance between Spa to base and then base to Brands Hatch will give TF Sport sufficient time to re-fettle the car back into its BGT guise from the Oman Racing colours it was called up to race in last weekend. Nicki Thiim should be 'full of beans' after his part in the teams class win at Spa!!!
Also being busy before the event has been the Academy Motorsport team who have needed to re-shell their #61 car that Micah Stanley and Ben Hurst race in the Championship after the car suffered extensive front end damage in the previous GT4 European race at Zandvoort after a recklessly instigated crash took out six other cars even before the cars had passed the start line on the opening lap for that series driver Fiona James. For Spa, team boss Matt Nicol Jones moved mountains to allow both Stanley and Hurst to race in a borrowed McLaren 570s GT4 but that duo suffered the misfortune of yet another DNF.
Beechdean AMR are back in the news again for this weekend after having skipped the Spa round of the Championship due to their commitments in the Michelin Le Mans Cup down in Barcelona last weekend. We had hoped that the speed merchant Marco Sorensen would be back in the hot seat of the #99 car alongside Andrew Howard having missed also missed the previous round at Donington Park in late June following his heavy accident at Le Mans in the AMR factory GTE.
Despite the Dane testing for the factory at Barcelona only last week (for reasons soon to be made clear) Sorensen will again miss this round for his place to be taken by former Prosport Performance ADAC GT Masters drive Valentin Hasse Clot.
In terms of Championships stakes - some classes could be determined this weekend whilst the remainder will go on to continue the hashtag #DoningtonDecider for yet another year, all clearly demonstrating just how competitive and open this GT Championship remains.
Ahead the head in GT3 Silver Cup and third overall in GT3 is the #96 Optimum crew of Wilkinson and Ellis now just 16 points behind the Championship leading Lamborghini with the TF Sport crew of Adam and Davidson just behind the #96 P4 overall and P3 in GT3 Pro-Am. In GT4, Canning and Hand moved themselves up to P3 in the overall GT4 stakes nw just 7.5 points behind the leaders whilst they now take the Championship lead in the GT4 Silver Cup from the Multimatic Ford.
In GT4 Pro-Am, a technical issue at Spa cost the #11 Beechdean AMR GT4 crew of Martin Plowman and Kelvin Fletcher some additional points that now sees their class lead now cut to just half a point with the two rounds remaining.
For the others, Brands Hatch will become a question of boosting pride and potential for a return to the series next year rather than Championship standings. Certainly, the twisting and turning characteristics of the Brands circuit will help for some more nose to tail racing with plenty of incident and action (hopefully not accident) as each of the #96, #95 and #97 cars get hit with success pit penalties in the midst of Sundays 2 hour race.
Looking forward to it!!

A podium defining solo act from Matt George at Spa
Racing at Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium in support of the Total Spa 24H last weekend was the French FFSA GT4 Championship holding their fourth round out of six in their 2019 calendar.
Competing amongst that thirty eight car field was the #44 David Appleby Engineering prepared Generation AMR SuperRacing Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 with Matt George behind the wheel.
Normally competing in the GT4 European Series alongside James Holder, this is the first time one of the new iteration of turbo charged Vantage GT4's has competed within the French National GT series and what an impact George made.
Having raced around the infamous 7km Belgium circuit the weekend before in the teams Jaguar GT4 as part of the British GT Championship, George Qualified their plain black #44 car in P2 and P4 respectively for each of the two one hour races over the weekend. Despite having to endure an additional 20 second of pit stop penalty for being a lone driver, George converted these front end starting positions to complete each race in P3 overall.
Considering the high air and track temperatures of Fridays race and the cooler wet conditions of Saturdays race and as a lone driver - that is a fantastic achievement.

Testing times in Belgium pays off for a few at the Spa 24
The seventy first running of the Spa 24 Hour at the weekend again never failed to disappoint in terms of the racing spectacle that seventy odd current specification GT3 race cars thundering around the seven kilometre circuit would always create, although there was of course always disappointment for some whenever the track decided to snap back.
Seventy one years since the last outright win by an Aston Martin at the event, this years six car entry of the new generation Aston Martin Racing V8 Turbo Vantage GT3 was the biggest from the marque in recent years and would hopefully give all the three full Pro car entries their best chance yet. As well as these cars there were entries into the remaining Pro-Am, Silver Cup and Am classes so all bases were covered.
After the customary trip down to Spa Francorchamps town for the car and drivers parade, things on track didn't exactly get off to a good start for the #97 Oman Racing with TF Sport team in Pro-Am after Salih Yoluc suffered a sizeable front end accident in Free Practice that would otherwise write off their car. Thanks to the team also having already raced at the circuit on the previous weekend in the latest round of the British GT Championship, they at least retained a spare chassis at the track which they quickly changed over in time for that to be ready for Qualifying.
By the time the Qualifying process had panned out on Thursday and Friday, there would be top twenty starting positions for all three Pro cars plus either P3 or P4 starts in the Silver Cup, Pro-Am and Am classes. For the #97 Oman Racing car, that would convert into a pit lane start due to their chassis change after the commencement of officially timed track activities.
Race morning on Saturday also heralded the expected change in meteorological conditions at the circuit with the intense 40 deg C sunshine of Tuesday and Wednesday being replaced with persistent rainfall and much cooler air and track temperatures.
With the race starting behind the Safety Car, one of the first cars to fall was unfortunately the leading AMR Pro car of Jonny Adam in the #59 Garage 59 car that he shared with Come Ledogar and Andrew Watson. A seized from hub was the problem and despite the best of efforts from the crew time was ultimately called on that car still inside the first hour of racing and for the second race this year, two of their drivers would see no actual race mileage.
Throughout the constant stream of Full Course Yellow and other race control and intervention that followed as the race attested to gain momentum, the #59 car was soon followed by the (eventual) confirmed retirements of both the #62 Pro car from and #762 Silver Cup entries from R-Motorsport. The #62 suffered from race ending accident damage to the rear after Matt Parry spun out at Stavelot whilst the #762 suffered from similar effects after an accident induced by others. Three cars out even before nightfall - that would normally have been considered as something of a disaster had it not have been for the remaining three cars then having a race of the lives with the #76 in the top 10 overall and both the #97 and #188 leading their respective Pro-Am and Am classes respectively.
The ever changing track conditions made for some difficult strategy calls as first a dry line appeared with slicks being the tyre of choice) quickly followed with more rain and full wets again required as night fell and the track lit up with another magnificent firework display.
At the 1/3rd distance - the #76 R-Motorpsort car was up to P5 with Alex Lynn cycling through the three man line up of himself, Jake Dennis and Marvin Kirchhofer whilst Nicki Thiim, then aboard the #97 car had moved up to P17 overall with the car that started from the pit lane. The #188 Garage 59 Am class car of Chris Harris was sitting comfortably for the conditions in P2 with their battle with Barwell just ahead after great work from Alex West, Ross Gunn and Chris Goodwin.
Then, after fourteen hours of racing under almost a constant stream of rain, FCY's and Safety Car periods to clean up various smashes around the circuit during the early hours of Sunday morning, the race was finally red flagged by Race Control due to the existing and forecasted weather conditions that were then swamping the circuit. Lessons learned from previous years coming into force and there didn't appear to be too many voices of discontent with that decision.
With cars now returned to the pits and garages under Parc Ferme conditions, that gave time for many to catch some sleep and barrier repairs to be made with the race not expected to resume much before midday local time.
With the race left down to a three to hour hour sprint to the flag the only AMR's left in contention for a prize was the #97 Oman Racing car and the #188 Garage 59 car after the #76 R-Motorpsort car had lost large amounts of time during the night with an incorrectly fitted tyre and wheel. The car was still in the race but too far behind to have time to made amends.
Late disappointment however came to the #188 Garage 59 car after Goodwin was collected from the rear by another car damaging the Aston's rear suspension. Despite getting the car home and repaired, that lost time would lose them their hold on a class podium although it did credit Harris with his first ever Spa 24 race finish.
That left the #97 Oman Racing with TF Sport AMR Vantage to fly the flag for the marque as AMR factory driver Nicki Thiim nursed a two lap lead to take the Pro-Am class win at the chequered flag in something of a very bedraggled and battle scared race car.
In addition to the race win, the points haul earned by Yoluc, Charlie Eastwood and Ahmad Al Harthy at the 6,12 and 24hour marks elevates them into the overall class lead in the Championship with just the final round of the season at Barcelona outstanding.
Whilst it may not have been the overall race win that had been yearned for, a class win at the toughest GT3 race in the world is nothing to be sniffed at. For Garage 59 and R-Motorsport, they both have the depth and ability to pick themselves up from their hardships in Belgium to race again another day.
For others however, their next race is just this weekend at Brands Hatch for the penultimate round of the British GT Championship.
2019 busy busy busy still ...................!!!

TF Sport claim class win at ‘eventful’ Spa 24
TF Sport's triumph was made all the more remarkable given the team started from the pitlane, following Salih Yoluc's huge practice accident at Raidillon, which forced it to rebuild and use a regular British GT Championship chassis for the race. The driver crew, including Aston Martin Racing works driver Nicki Thiim (DEN), Ahmad Al Harthy (UAE) Yoluc (TUR) and Charlie Eastwood (IRL), recovered 50 positions to finish 22nd overall, a lap clear of its nearest class rival. For Thiim it was also a personal landmark; this was his third major 24-race class win, adding to his 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours GTE Am victory and his 2017 Nürburgring 24 Hours SP8 class win.
Three of Aston Martin's partner teams, Garage 59, TF Sport and R-Motorsport entered six Vantage GT3s in an event afflicted by a high attrition rate and heavy rain that persisted almost throughout. The race was even temporarily halted for nearly six hours in the early morning when conditions were deemed too dangerous to continue.
R-Motorsport proved strong contenders with both its Pro cars. The #62 ran competitively in the top ten in the hands of works driver and local hero Maxime Martin (BEL) early on, while the #76 emerged as a contender for victory with Alex Lynn (GB) until a mismatched tyre set cost the team its front-running position before the race was stopped. The car Lynn shared with Marvin Kirchhöfer (GER) and Jake Dennis (GB) eventually finished 19th.
The third Aston Martin to take the chequered flag was Garage 59's #188 Am car, driven by Chris Goodwin (GB), Chris Harris (GB), Alexander West (SWE) and works reserve driver Ross Gunn (GB), which was also a class contender until it was damaged in contact from a Pro car.
Nicki Thiim said: "To take the first 24 hour win for the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 is an incredible feeling. This team has put so much work into this weekend you wouldn't believe it and they deserve this. For me personally it's very special as well to get a win here, to add to those I have at the Nürburgring and Le Mans. Now I have a 24-hour set, it's time to go and get some more!"
Tom Ferrier, team owner of TF Sport said: "On Thursday night, when we were looking at re-building a car for the race after the crash I would have taken a finish! And the guys in the team have worked incredibly hard to get the car ready in time - we were still working on it on Saturday morning! We had an aggressive strategy to work our way through the field early on and that paid off. Once we had achieved that it was a case of keeping our heads down and avoiding trouble. Nicki always delivers, but all four of our drivers did a magnificent job, and you'd have to say as a standalone event this was probably the biggest win for our team!"
David King, President, Aston Martin Racing, said: “TF Sport are a strong and faithful partner for us and they deserve this, especially after all the hard work they put in to recover from the practice crash. Spa is a particularly difficult race to win, so to have six cars that were all competitive at various stages of the event proves just how far the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 has come. R-Motorsport were unfortunate to miss out on a well-deserved podium and Garage 59's Am car was an innocent victim in traffic. Their problems just go to prove how tough this race is.”
