Heart of Racing confirm their 2026/27 Asian Le Mans Series driver line ups

There is also no messing about with the two Heart Of Racing Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 entries for this year’s European based Asina Le Mans Series after the team confirmed their full driver line up earlier today.

Already confirmed with their team entries had seen both Gray Newell and Ian James take on the lead roles within their respective #23 and #27 car entries for this winter’s three round – two four-hour races per round format.

Almost replicating their 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship driver line up sees Newell again paired alongside Eduardo Barrichello but this time they will compete alongside fellow HoRT teammate Roman de Angelis (not Jonny Adam but he 'could' be figuring within another entry TBC) within the #23 car whilst James will be joined by both of his FIA WEC co-drivers in Zacharie Robichon and Mattia Drudi aboard their #27 car.

In it to win it just took on a whole new meaning!

Heart of Racing facing something of an uphill battle with the FIA WEC race in Barcelona tomorrow

Heart of Racing facing something of an uphill battle with the FIA WEC race in Barcelona tomorrow

Qualifying and Hyperpole has now been determined within this weekend’s penultimate and rescheduled round of the FIA World Endurance Championship from the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain, sessions that have left the Heart of Racing team with something of an uphill battle upon their hands during tomorrows race.

Last time out in Japan had seen both Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercars circulated within the top ten in class on both pace and strategy before ultimately an error from the #007 car of Tom Gamble and Harry Tincknell cost them a late drive through penalty whilst the #009 car of Alex Riberas and Marco Sorensen became victim to an untimely Safety Car.

That left the cars finishing well down the order to what they perhaps should have been but despite a P2 finish during the earlier Free Practice 2 session for the #009 car, both crews appear to be struggling with the package that they have available to them this weekend and that was reflected during Qualifying when both cars failed to progress through to Hyperpole for the first time in several races. The #009 will lead the way in tomorrow’s six-hour race for the team in P11 whilst the #007 car will be starting just one place back within the seventeen strong class.

Sadly for the team, it was a similar tail for their two Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 powered crews as the #27 car of Ian James and Zaharie Robichon had to come to terms with their now 42kg of success ballast around a circuit where their third man and Pro driver (Mattia Drudi) will not be arriving until the early hours of tomorrow morning thanks to his GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup racing commitments tonight in Portimao.

Whilst this class’s two earlier Free Practice sessions had come through warming sunshine, this morning’s final session before Qualifying was ran through mirky and misty track conditions with a high humidity level against a much cooler track surface.

The #23 car of Gray Newell, Eduardo Barrichello and Jonny Adam had no handicap of any success ballast thanks to their unfortunate and bizarre DNF last time out in Japan, their lap times during qualifying were significantly quicker than their sister car but both cars would pit for tyres during their own Qualifying round looking for that additional pace.

That left the #23 of Newell best placed in class at P14 and just 1.4 seconds off the then fastest lap in class whilst the #27 of James almost appeared to have ‘accepted’ its fate with a lowly qualifying run down in P18 of an eighteen strong class – some seven seconds off the lead pace at the time whilst still having adjustments made to the car during the session too. Maybe tyre strategy was already coming into play just in case the race was ran upon a dry but very abrasive track surface.

We all know and realise that Qualifying is just where you start with where you actually finish being a totally different thing but with rain apparently very much in peoples mind for tomorrows race, the running order will change many times over during that six hours.

Whilst the #007, #009 and #23 cars have no remaining championship winning potential this season, the #27 crew do still sit effectively second within the LMGT3 class albeit fourth in the order as each of the three drivers of the leading Corvette are on a differing points tally to one another as two have each skipped different rounds of the season. What the #27 will still need to do however is to convincingly outscore the #33 TF Sport prepared entry by the end of the race tomorrow in order to take the chase to the final round at Monza in a few weeks’ time.

What it all meant for the #23 Heart of Racing team and crew after todays result

What it all meant for the #23 Heart of Racing team and crew after todays result

Vantage, the most successful racing car in the great sporting endurance history of the legendary British brand, claimed its 11th class podium in the world famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, when the Heart of Racing Team finished third in the LMGT3 class on Sunday.

Gray Newell, on his race debut, driving alongside FIA World Endurance Championship team-mates Dudu Barrichello and two-time Le Mans GT class winner Jonny Adam, raced to a fraught and fiercely contested final podium spot, finishing ahead of the rival Lexus by just 2.5 seconds in a dramatic end to the race.

This excellent result ensured the latest generation of the Vantage GT3 finished in the top three in its class at Le Mans for the first time.

“This was an outstanding performance from Vantage, another excellent weekend at Le Mans for Aston Martin, and a great result for our partners Heart of Racing Team,’ said Aston Martin Head of Endurance Adam Carter. “This generation of Vantage has been a contender at Le Mans since it made its debut in 2024, and it is satisfying to see it achieve a podium in the hands of a very competitive, well organised partner. We believe the car is capable of winning, and showed as much again throughout the race, so we will be back next year to try again. Our congratulations go to Gray who was exemplary on his debut, to Dudu who continues to impress and of course to Jonny, who has been an outstanding champion for Aston Martin and deserves this latest accolade.”

The podium was the first for the US-based Heart of Racing Team at Le Mans, which brought two Vantage GT3s to the event for the first time. The #27 THOR Vantage, driven as always by team principal Ian James, Zach Robichon and Mattia Drudi, took pole position for the second consecutive year, after Drudi set a new qualifying lap record of 3m52.433s. Sadly the trio, who led the class for several hours during the race and were one of the pace-setting cars, had their hopes dashed in the 21st hour when they suffered technical issues.

Their misfortune allowed the #23 Vantage to move into podium contention, having run in or around the top five all race. As the 94th edition of the French classic moved into the final few hours, it became a clear fight for third behind the victorious Corvette and the pursuant Lexus. The sister Japanese machine then put Barrichello under intense pressure in the final laps, which the young Brazilian calmly absorbed to record his own first podium at Le Mans.

“I gave everything I had in those last laps and took every inch out of the car.” said Barrichello. “In those situations, you trust the people around you and my engineers were giving me information and targets to hit. I just had to keep my cool and do my job and thankfully that was good enough to finish on the podium!”

For Adam, the podium means that 50% of his Le Mans starts have concluded with a visit to the Le Mans rostrum, having won his class in 2017 and again in 2020: “Aston Martin has always had a special relationship with Le Mans, so to stand on the podium here, at a race so steeped in the brand's history, means a great deal. We had some good fortune and some bad fortune with safety cars and strategy during the race, but overall it came together really nicely. I'm especially pleased for Gray because this was his Le Mans debut and to come away with a podium is huge for his confidence and a great reward for all his hard work. It could have been an incredible story for both cars today, but we'll celebrate this result.

For Newell, the result will of course be written indelibly in his memory: “More than anything, I just feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this team. These guys are the best. The culture at Heart of Racing is phenomenal and it's something that stood out to me from the moment I arrived. To come here for my first Le Mans and experience that environment, while standing on the podium at the end of it, is special. One of the biggest takeaways from this week is how encouraging it has been for me personally. To come here, compete at this level and feel comfortable gives me a lot of confidence. It shows me that the skill set is working and that I'm moving in the right direction.”

“What a 24-hour race,” added Ian James, “Those guys executed all week. I’m disappointed for the #27 car, we were in contention for the win there until we lost the gearbox. It’s a strange feeling because it obviously hurts in some ways, but I am very happy that the team took its first Le Mans podium. This place is so special and it’s a privilege to race here. Now we look forward to Brazil and see if we can get a win on the books.”

The two THOR cars were joined by Racing Spirit of Léman trio, debutants Clement Mateu and Marius Fossard, as well as Aston Martin works driver Valentin Hasse Clot in the #59 Aston Martin Vantage GT3. The trio finished a creditable 11th.

Their best prize yet twice around the clock at the infamous Green Hell

Their best prize yet twice around the clock at the infamous Green Hell

Aston Martin’s most successful racing car achieved the British performance brand’s best-ever result in the ADAC Ravenol 24h Nürburgring, finishing third in the 54th running of the world-famous event, last weekend.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its debut in the twice-around-the-clock race, on the notoriously challenging 15.8-mile ‘Green Hell’ set deep in Germany’s Eiffel Mountain region, Aston Martin and works drivers Mattia Drudi, Christian Krognes and Nicki Thiim raced the Walkenhorst Motorsport-run Vantage GT3 to third overall in arguably the toughest endurance race on the motorsport calendar.

The result marked a new high watermark for Aston Martin, as well as for the 2018 Spa 24 Hours-winning German team; since neither has previously finished on the overall podium in the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

“This is an outstanding result,” said Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport, Adam Carter. “There is no more robust a test for a racing car than the Nürburgring 24 Hours, and Vantage passed it with flying colours. It’s certainly no less than everyone at Walkenhorst Motorsport and Aston Martin Racing deserved, given the incredible amount of hard work, preparation and skill that it takes to build a result like this.

“To be in the podium fight for 24 hours, and to be one of the race’s principal contenders at the top of the order once again underlines the pedigree of Vantage, and it is a fabulous way to begin the summer as we look ahead to more great opportunities in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Spa 24 Hours next month.”

The #34 Walkenhorst Motorsport Vantage was one of more than 40 GT3s entered in the SP9 class, brought into the global media spotlight further this year by the participation of four-time Formula One® world champion Max Verstappen. Running in the Pro division of SP9, Drudi and Krognes shone in qualifying to place the Aston Martin first, and then second, in their respective Top Qualifying sessions. Thiim ultimately put the car a respectable 11th on the 161-car grid in Top Qualifying 3.

Knowing the race’s reputation for chaotic opening hours, Walkenhorst strategically pitted earlier than much of the field to offset its fuel plan by two laps, allowing Thiim to undercut several rivals and move up into the top five. This is where the Aston Martin remained for the rest of the race. Its strong form was aided by the uncharacteristically low ambient temperatures (3°C to 5°C) which played to the strengths of Pirelli’s tyres.

Krognes raced Vantage up into second in his stint, once Thiim’s opening double-stint had been completed, before handing over to Drudi who had to contend with the first of many of the race’s intermittent rain showers. The Italian characteristically absorbed the pressure and carved out a 40-second lead over the field.

Through a difficult and chaotic night, which saw the demise of several fancied runners, the leaders’ alternate strategies converged and the Walkenhorst trio found themselves in a three-way fight for third between a Lamborghini and a BMW, all behind the two front-running Mercedes. That became a battle for second when Verstappen’s car ran into trouble with less than two hours to go.

Entrusted with bringing the car home to a famous podium, Drudi set about closing a more than two-minute gap to the second-placed Lamborghini. When that car was served an 86-second Code 60 violation penalty, the Italian who again contended with slippery conditions on intermediate tyres, charged into second position only to have his hopes dashed cruelly by a Code 60. Delayed by this on the final lap when he was almost home on the Döttinger Hohe straight, Drudi thus finished third.

“It was frustrating that we couldn’t finish second,” said Drudi, who has stood on the podium in the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship already this year, and along with Thiim won the opening round of the GT World Challenge Europe at Paul Ricard. “But we can be very proud of finishing on the podium, Aston Martin’s first at the Nürburgring. This track is already very challenging, but with the rain and the level of competition it was very hard. In the final stint I had to push because I knew we could get ahead of the Lamborghini, and so the Code 60 at the end was a shame, but still, this is something I will remember forever.”

Since returning to sportscar racing in the mid-2000s, Aston Martin has been an ever-present at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, whether through works-entered cars or with its most trusted partner teams. From 2006, through each iteration of Vantage, the Wings have claimed 10 class victories and more than 30 podium finishes.

Walkenhorst Aston Martin Racing claim overall podium finish at the end of the ADAC Ravenol N24

Walkenhorst Aston Martin Racing claim overall podium finish at the end of the ADAC Ravenol N24

Whilst there have been many other Aston Martin Racing powered team podium finishes this weekend, the greatest achievement of the year so far has to go to the #34 Walkenhorst Motorsport entry in this weekend’s ADAC Ravenol N24 around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Giving early indications as to their speed and intentions, the #34 car of Nicki Thiim, Mattia Drudi and Christian Krognes not only took the race to the more dominant German brands but beat many of them in the process to eventually finish third overall at the end of the twenty-four earlier this afternoon. This result is the best overall race result on record for any AMR podium tea has achieved and has been something that has (and continues) to illude the British marque.

Starting from eleventh on the grid after Fridays top qualifying session, the #34 was quickly making its mark at the sharp end of the one hundred and sixty-one car entry – leading the race by right as the afternoon turned dark and as Drudi survived two laps around the sprawling circuit on slicks whilst others were coming off worse for the same.

With their success, there was also heartache to be felt within the AMR camp featuring four AMR Vantage GT3 powered crews and one Vantage GT4 powered crew as it was just the #34 crew who finished the race. The #35 Walkenhorst car failed to make it five times around the track before its stationary position on track was narrowly avoided by the chasing pack whilst the #39 Walkenhorst car didn’t go much further after being rear ended during the night.

The #37 Prosport Racing AMR did make it through the night only for a tyre failure along the Dottinger Hohe to spear the older Vantage headlong into the barrier and into immediate retirement. We unfortunately didn’t see much of the #169 Dorr Motorsport Vantage GT4, but they did also feature high within their SP10 class overnight before also failing somewhere soon after.

It’s been another great event – a great tribute to the sadness of the preceding Qualification race weekend but well done to all concerned.

Podium success and late heartache at the end of the Spa 6Hr yesterday

Podium success and late heartache at the end of the Spa 6Hr yesterday

Another incredible round of the FIA World Endurance Championship came our way yesterday from Spa Francorchamps, Belgium as the four Heart of Racing Aston Martin powered crews went about their usual competitive game plan which this time earned one crew podium success but at the cost of broken hearts for another.

Unlike the preceding two days of track preparation, the early afternoon start to yesterday’s six-hour race came under glorious blue skies and warming sunshine as the thirty-five cars within the Hypercar and LMGT3 gathered on the grid in front of another sizeable crowd.

Qualifying the day before had seen both Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercars reach the Hyperpole session for the first time as good pace during Free Practice had put decent qualifying positions very much on the cards with the #009 car of Marco Sorenson/Alex Riberas just out doing the #007 car of Harry Tincknell/Tom Gamble in P6 and P7 respectively.

Within LMGT3, the experience within the #27 AMR Vantage car of Ian James/Zacharie Robichon/Mattia Drudi again proved pivotable as they secured a P2 start after their class Hyperpole session whilst Gray Newell still did well in his first WEC visit to the circuit to qualify P13 in a car that he shares with Jonny Adam and Eduardo Barrichello.

The race final got underway after two warm up laps behind the Safety Car with all the entries surviving the initial bumping around the opening laps as race pace was quickly determined by those cars at the front in class but whilst initially losing a small number of places each, all four cars were looking good.

An early Safety Car for a car off in the gravel reset the pack after just twenty minutes but once the race got back underway, the next biggest challenge for those on track was when the hypercar recaught and made their way through the LMGTs tail enders which saw a car from each class make through the gravel for an untidy show of driving skills from those concerned.

Whilst Newell had kept his copybook clean as far as track limits were concerned in Qualifying, he was unfortunately racking them in during his first two hours aboard the #23 car, something that would cost him and his team-mates two additional visit to the pit lane in penalties.

At the halfway point, all bronze and silver ranked drivers had now had at least one stint apiece within their respective GT car whilst all four hypercar drivers were still holding a mid-table position whilst not favouring still the medium tyre. Further Full Course Yellow calls for debris and later a collision between a leading hypercar and an LMGT3 at Les Combes – something which lead to something of another prolonged delay to the race.

Two hours still remained as there seemed to be a distinct downturn in ambient temperature at the top of the circuit, but the #27 Vantage crew had come back through the field to third in class, but the two green hypercars were still importantly where they both started in sixth and seventh.

Disaster would however strike down the #009 car of Riberas as, at another Safety Car restart and whilst attempting to overtake the Alpine onto the Kemmel Straight, that wheels left the track surface and for the Valkyrie to spin, crossing the track before hitting the outside wall with sufficient force to smash the front quarter of the car putting the #009 into immediate retirement.

Another Safety Car clean-up operation left just twenty-five minutes with Gamble getting the final stint to the flag aboard the #007. Drudi was still aboard his #27 car, and he was still pushing for an improved class podium position – then in third but a time penalty for then leader would move them up one at the end.

As the chequered flag fell, the race pace of the #007 had just fallen away towards the end despite being on the ‘better for them’ softs as they finished their season best in fourth with the #27 Vantage LMGT3 crew also getting their first podium of the year – second in class. The #23 Vantage LMGT3 would complete their first WEC race together as a driving trio in P13 as eyes now move to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Two banker results for one half of the Heart of Racing garage after the opening 6hr round to the FIA WEC in Italy

Two banker results for one half of the Heart of Racing garage after the opening 6hr round to the FIA WEC in Italy

Sunday’s opening six-hour round to the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship from Imola in Italy could perhaps be explained as something of a character-building experience for one half of the Heart of Racing garage but a job well done (but still leaving room for improvement) for the other after another characteristically gruelling race.

Starting under the Italian sunshine, there was eagerness to continue along the impressive development and performance curve that the team has displayed with last years all new Aston Martin Valyrie Hypercar and with a well-rounded Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 package for what was now a two-car entry.

Qualifying on Saturday had not reflected the quicker pace of the Vantage LMGT3 and whilst the #007 Valkyrie had done well with their P9 starting position, the sister #009 car was still struggling for pace after having a new car built up after their Prologue Test accident earlier in the week.

Despite thirty-five Hypercar and LMGT3 cars taking to the start around the tighter and undulating historical circuit, all ran surprisingly smoothly with all four Heart of Racing cars running within their respective mid-field at the end of the opening hour.

Into the second hour and #27 Vantage LMGT3 of Ian James had already had five seconds added to his first pit stop time for his apparent starting procedure error whilst the #23 rookie Gray Newell was also learning things the hard way after getting firstly pinged for speeding within the pit lane before later getting a reprimand for not quite stopping within his designated pitstop box. Despite these, the young American was being otherwise impressive considering his short racing background.

By the end of the second hour of racing, both Valkyries had elevated themselves into the top ten in class whilst the two Vantages were still struggling for pace compared to most of the other OEM’s. Despite an earlier Safety Car intervention for a stranded car on track had not shortened the gap to their opponents up ahead.

Hour three into hour four and with the imminent threat of rain fast approaching, the status quo within both class sets was looking insecure for all as the #007 remained within the top 10 and the #27 Vantage was doing likewise in P8.

Unfortunately, with little over ninety minutes remaining, Mattia Drudi was forced to box the #27 car and for (presumably) technical reasons unknown, they would take no further part in the proceedings making for a second consecutive DNF at the circuit. The #009 Valkyrie would also drop off the chasing group to eventually finish P14 overall and one lap down to the winning Toyota.

The #007 meanwhile would continue to round off a decent opening race meeting for drivers Harry Tincknell and Tom Gamble as they would secure an encouraging P9 finish – a position twice as good as their first race around Imola in that car last year.

The #23 Vantage LMGT3 of Newell, Kobe Pauwels and Jonny Adam would also fare well in class despite the former Le Mans winners supporting two series rookies as they also finished P9 in class at the end of the six hours.

The team will now look forward to the next round to the season from the more favourable racetrack of Spa Francorchamps in Belgium in just a couple of weeks’ time.

Not an ideal start to the FIA WEC season but the Heart of Racing still came out on top at the end of the Prologue

Not an ideal start to the FIA WEC season but the Heart of Racing still came out on top at the end of the Prologue

Blink and you would have missed it as the FIA World Endurance Championship completed its mandatory Prologue test at Imola today having been forced to do so from global events.

Whilst we would have been pleased to say that all passed off without incident for the Heart of Racing team, that would sadly not be the case after Marco Sorensen suffered a heavy off in his #008 Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar during the wet morning session.

Without knowing too much about causation, the green V12 powered monster was seen spinning through the gravel before connecting heavily with the tyre protected circuit barrier causing significant damage to the car.

Whilst the Dane was able to extricate himself from the car and after mandatory medical assistance, was fortunately deemed fit to continue with the upcoming race weekend but the same couldn’t be said for the #009 car with the team now working hard to build up a new car utilising their spare monocoque in time for Fridays first Free Practice session.

Meanwhile, their sister #007 Hypercar of Harry Tincknell and Tom Gamble got in the laps and hence valuable data during the eight hours of track availability finishing the day just outside of the top ten within an extended class of seventeen cars.

It was better news however, across the team garage to where both Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3’s are prepared as Mattia Drudi powered the #27 car that he shares with Zacharie Robichon and Ian James to the top of the overall class leaderboard.

Their sister #23 car of Jonny Adam and a series debuting Kobe Pauwels and Gray Newell also fared well within the wet conditions finishing mid table in the results but with both debutant drivers getting in a decent number of laps between them.

That was of course just testing and the real business will begin on Friday ahead of Qualifying on Saturday and the start of this six-hour race opener at 13:00hrs local.

The Nurburgring Langstrecken Serie becomes the first traditional European based race series to get its 2026 programme underway this weekend with its first of ten rounds around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife between now and mid-October.

Compared to previous seasons within the NLS Series, all Aston Martin Racing powered participation moves to the front of their traditional diverse and expansive grids will all three AMR powered entries competing within the SP9 class.

Over the winter, the usual participants from the Prosport Racing team have seen them realign to another platform leaving just there older iteration of Vantage GT3 to compete with the two Walkenhorst Motorsport and their newer Evo’d cars.

As the German based team continue to go about their pre-season testing business around Europe, the Walkenhorst Motorsport team have been the first Aston Martin Racing powered team to confirm their participation within this year’s ADAC Ravenol Nurburgring 24 Hour.

Having already confirmed a multi- AMR Vantage GT3 participation within the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance and Sprint Cups Series, the team today confirmed a two-car entry into this year’s event in both the SP9 and SP9 Pro-Am classes.

Last season a four-driver line up but for this year just Nicki Thiim, Mattia Drudi and Christian Krognes reconvene within the #34 car whilst their #35 Pro-Am entry will feature an all-new driver line up of Matteo Villagomez alongside German racers Felipe Ferdandez Laser and Dennis Fetzer.

The is still something to be proven around the infamous Nurburgring Nordschliefe for any AMR Vantage GT3 driven entry having never won overall, so Walkenhorst will be hoping to rewrite the record books at this year’s event in mid-May.

Within the distinctly organised manner in which they work, the Heart of Racing team today confirmed their remaining driver line up for this season’s FIA World Endurance Championship.

Having already confirmed a full driver line up within both of their #007 and #009 Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar entries, only the ‘lead’ driver of both Ian James and Gray Newell had so far been confirmed within their #23 and #27 Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 entries – until today.

This morning’s news see no surprises within the #23 car as Ian James is again joined by both Zacharie Robichon and Mattia Drudi as the Canadian and Italian look to build upon their rookie year of last season.

The team’s new for 2026 #27 car entry is confirmed with Newell as he takes another massive step up the GT racing ladder from his GT4 days within the GT America/GT4 America Series earlier and his GT3 experience from within the GT World Challenge America Series which he shared under the tutelage of AMR factory driver Darren Turner.

Joining him will be the familiar face of Eduardo Barrichello as the Brazilian goes double duty with the team within their WEC and IMSA race programmes this season with both drivers this year operating under the overall guidance of AMR factory driver Jonny Adam.

Two times Le Mans 24hr GTE class winner and multiple British GT Champion, the Scot needs no further introduction as Barrichello is himself only entering his second year of GT racing having competed within the championship last season with the Racing Spirit of Leman team.

“I am super excited to be joining The Heart of Racing in 2026 and returning to WEC,” said Adam. “Teaming up with Dudu, who had some awesome performances last season in LMGT3, alongside supporting Gray’s first year in WEC and the Le Mans 24 Hours is something that I’m really getting fully involved in. The goal is to gain experience along the way and hopefully have some successful results for the team with the Aston Martin Vantage. I believe that’s entirely possible with this line-up.”

Although probably already testing together somewhere around the world, the more official track action isn’t that far away with the Prologue Test which precedes the opening round to the season in Qatar just over three weeks away.

The FIA WEC signs off in Bahrain

The FIA WEC signs off in Bahrain

The chequered flag may have fallen upon the FIA World Endurance Championship season on Saturday evening but that wasn’t quite the end of it for both the Heart of Racing and Racing Spirit of Lemans teams as there was still that of the Rookie Test and Awards night on Sunday to round things off in style.

Having finished the year with another podium finish for the #27 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 – it was a step up to the Hypercar class for driver Mattia Drudi as he and car regular Marco Sorensen put in some additional laps around the Bahrain International Circuit as part of the rookie test for the Italian.

He in turn was joined by the son of the team owner, Gray Newell who stepped up from the teams GT World Challenge America and his true Vantage GT3 variant of car and up to the Vantage LMGT3 as used by the team throughout the season just complete. Lead by Darren Turner back in the States, his progression into the LMGT3 variant was this time overseen by the car regular Zacharie Robichon.

Split over both morning and afternoons sessions, saw Drudi post the nineth fastest Hyperclass class time with a 1:50:985 before going slightly faster in session two to finish thirteenth overall whilst Newell started his LMGT3 account 2:04:805 in the morning before improving massively with a 2:03:554 in the afternoon.

The #10 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR Vantage LMGT3 also ran for a few laps in the afternoon with Jonny Adam behind the wheel before he returns to the international stage again within the forthcoming Asian Le Mans Series. Adam was there as part of the ongoing AMR Drivers Academy test.

Then at the end of season awards night, there was one last AMR powered success as Eduardo Barrichello cemented his mark on the championship by winning the Revelation of the Year Award for his efforts in what was his debut season in GT racing.

More milestones met for Valkyrie and another class podium in LMGT3 rounds off the WEC season

More milestones met for Valkyrie and another class podium in LMGT3 rounds off the WEC season

The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar concluded its debut season of global competition with a second-straight points finish, at the Bapco Energies 8 Hours of Bahrain, on Saturday, after leading a round of the FIA World Endurance Championship for the first time.

The seventh-place result for Aston Martin THOR Team’s #009 entry, driven by three-time WEC GT champion Marco Sørensen, Alex Riberas and Roman De Angelis, added to the fifth-place finish the team had taken last-time out in Japan on a weekend of notable landmarks for the unique 6.5-litre, V12-powered British hypercar.

A magnificent performance in Hypercar qualifying was the highlight of Saturday’s on-track action as the #007 entry of British trio Harry Tincknell, Tom Gamble and Ross Gunn led the #009 in an all-Valkyrie one-two; ensuring that both Aston Martin THOR Team cars would progress to the Hyperpole session and challenge for pole position for the first time. Sixth and ninth positions on the grid marked the first time two Valkyries had qualified inside the top 10 in the WEC.

Aston Martin’s first ‘Le Mans Hypercar showed more potential during the eight-hour race as, following a mid-race safety car period that bunched the field, Riberas charged from fifth place into the lead – the first time Valkyrie has headed a WEC race. It was a fitting end to a trail-blazing debut season that featured the car’s maiden podium finish in North America’s IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship in October’s gruelling Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Raced by the works Aston Martin THOR Team, it is the only car in WEC’s premier category derived from a road-legal hypercar and made its global debut in the Qatar 1812km in February over a grueling season that has covered more than 22,000 racing miles, and eight rounds of WEC (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans) for the two stunning, green Aston Martins.

“The aim for Aston Martin in Hypercar in 2025 was to compete in endurance racing at the very highest level of competition, both globally in WEC and in North America in IMSA,” said Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport. “Both are magnificent series with manufacturers, teams and drivers that have been at the pinnacle of the sport for, in some cases, decades. To have brought such a unique car as Valkyrie to the stage, to start where we did, and to consistently improve our performances to the point where we’ve come to the WEC finale in Bahrain and perform the way we have, shows the ability and desire of everybody that is a part of this programme. We have made satisfying progress in 2025 and will continue to build on this next season.”

Aston Martin’s most successful sportscar of all time, the Vantage meanwhile finished the FIA World Endurance Championship season with a podium finish in the LMGT3 class in Bahrain.

The Heart of Racing Team drivers Ian James, Zacharie Robichon and Mattia Drudi finished third in an action-packed race to claim the team’s first top-three finish of the season for the ultimate racing version of Aston Martin’s most focused sportscar.

The trio ran inside the top six throughout the race with Aston Martin works driver Drudi closing down a 30-second gap to the leaders with two hours to go to put himself in the hunt for victory in the closing stages.

THOR’s result was the second WEC podium finish of the season for Vantage, after Racing Spirit of Léman finished third in Brazil during the summer. It was also a 14th WEC rostrum finish for Vantage in Bahrain; those results scored across the LMGT3 class and its predecessors, LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am. RSL’s Anthony McIntosh, Eduardo Barrichello and Aston Martin works driver Valentin Hasse-Clot finished 14th in LMGT3 aboard their #10 Vantage.

“The ultra-close nature of the competition in WEC means that to fight at the front, you must have first-rate machinery and partner teams capable of delivering when it counts,” said Adam Carter, Aston Martin Head of Endurance Motorsport. “In The Heart of Racing Team and Racing Spirit of Léman we have two outstanding partners, who have both scored pole positions and podium finishes this year. This is a testament to the strength of both organisations, to the accessibility and robustness of Vantage to drivers of all levels of experience, and to a set of regulations that keeps the competing machines close. We are already looking ahead to a 2026 season.”
