The most important race weekend yet for the IMSA Heart of Racing team

Monday, October 04, 2021

Its perhaps the biggest race weekend so far coming up for the Heart of Racing team as the team and drivers face up to the final round of the 2021 IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship Sprint Cup Championship from the picturesque Virginia International Raceway.

Seven races into the eight-event series, the #23 Aston Martin Racing crew of Roman de Angelis and Ross Gunn presently retain the lead in that Championship by just seventy-four points and with nearly 385 points on offer at this weekend’s final round, that puts four to five crews still in contention for the title should other results go their way.

This battle goes on top of the main GTD Championship season that still has two more rounds to go at both VIR and at Road Atlanta within which the #23 crew sit third in the Championship one hundred and four points behind, so with a similar number of points available per round – that Championship battle is far from over.

The team’s second AMR Vantage GTD for drivers Ian James and Alex Riberas again joins the team for these final two IMSA races but having only joined the Championship two races ago at Laguna Seca, there is obviously no Championship standing for them.

Being one of the tighter circuits on the IMSA calendar, this event is limited to the GT classes only with this Saturday’s two hour forty minute Michelin GT Challenge at VIR race being competed by just three GTLM and fifteen GTD cars.
