Three Aston Martins see out the finale of the GT4 Winter Series in Spain
Sunday, March 09, 2025
The GT4 Winter Series came to an end at an at times, very inclement Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona as three Aston Martins helped swell the usual grid to an impressive twenty-seven car entry for this three-race finale.
Whilst the #39 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR Vantage GT4 Evo of Baudouin Detout and Max Hewitt would be on hand again to see out their season within the series, the #700 Mucke Motorsport AMR of Thilo Goos was sadly not there after a heavy off at the last round in Motorland Aragon last weekend.
That loss was however more than made up as both the Prosport Racing and Araujo Competicao team each entered one AMR apiece as the German based team fielded an older 17A spec Vantage for their young German whilst the Araujo team entered one of the new Vantage GT4 Evo’s that they would run within the Iberian Supercars Series.
Saturday’s opening sprint was at least run on a dry track after heavy rainfall during the earlier testing and Qualifying programme with the American Hewitt leading the AMR way in sixth ahead of the #17 Prosport car of Roman Fellner-Feldegg in Pro whilst the #007 Araujo car was further back P4 in Pro-Am. Despite one Safety Car intervention halfway through the thirty-minute opener, the #39 car of Hewitt would finish P6 overall with the #17 car of Feldegg just behind in P7 and the #007 Araujo P14 overall/P4 in class.
Sunday morning second sprint race for the team’s other driver was however back to a wet track for which all three Astons would start further back with the #39 Racing Spirit of Leman car of Detout again the highest AMR in P12 with the #007 Araujo of Goncalo Araujo in P14 and Anton Abee P19 in the #17 Prosport car.
Starting the race with rain falling heavily, it wasn’t long before the Safety Car was called back out as Detout first spun around after possible contact before looping it around by himself next time around as his car became beached in the gravel trap. That passed the AMR mantel to Araujo in tenth overall and P3 in class for the remaining ten minutes.
By the end, those places had reversed with Abee claiming top honours P12 overall/P6 in Pro whilst the #17 car finished P15 overall/P6 in class with the #39 listed ten laps down to the leaders.
That left the final one-hour pit stop punctuated race to round off the season again but at least the rains had now passed, and the track had dried again as Detout headed Abee and Pereira P9, P12 and P16 respectively on the grid.
Another calling for the Safety Car halted the battles at the front the allow for the recovery of two stranded cars on track before going back to green only for the #17 Prosport car to make multiple contact with the #38 Porsche, pushing it into the gravel and bringing out the Safety Car again.
Despite earlier reports of rain falling at parts of the circuit, the race continued under otherwise dry conditions for the teams second driver to see out the last twenty minutes or so of the season. The season finally ended for the #39 as they held onto another P7 in class finish in P13 overall but with the #007 Araujo finishing just ahead on track P12 overall/P5 in class with the Prosport team seeing out their one and only event in the series at the tail end of the grid.
