Three Vantage GT3’s from the Belgin based Comtoyou Racing team, two more from the German based Walkenhorst Motorsport team and a solo entry from the Verstappen.com entry from the 2 Seas Motorsport team saw the latter #33 entry of Thierry Vermuelin, Chris Lulham and Harry King look to complete the job that they so nearly had last time out at the Nurburgring had it not been for a post-race time penalty.
Having crossed the finish line in Germany high enough up to the order to claim the Gold class title with one race remaining, a post-race time penalty saw the #33 cars points haul halved leaving it almost as a winner takes all event at the Spanish finale this time around.
Whilst they qualified P12 overall/P3 in class, the other Pro, silver and bronze classed entries all struggled for pace with the Vantage GT3 definitely struggling for speed this time around with even the #7 Comtoyou Pro class entry of Nicki Thiim, Marco Sorensen and Mattia Drudi only doing as well as P22 overall with the freshly crowned GTWCE Sprint Cup Champions of Jamie Day, Kobe Pauwels (with Nicolas Baert) way down in P53.
With sixty cars taking the start to this final three-hour race of the season, incident and accident upon track was to be expected and that happened fairly much upon the opening lap which saw the race again neutralised behind the Safety Car for the first time. Getting back to green after just a ten-minute clean-up operation from the track marshals a poor start from the #33 car of Vermeulen saw them drop in-between the two Pro class Astons of the #7 Comtoyou and #34 Walkenhorst cars.
Half an hour in and the next safety car intervention came along as two cars came together with themselves and the wall which may have also affected the #270 Comtoyou car of Jessica Hawkins along the way before the race finally got back underway after a lengthy delay.
Another car off in the gravel saw another Full Course Yellow being called as the #33 car had finally surrendered be the lead Aston Martin in the race as the #7 car of Thiim was now circulating in seventh overall before another car into the wall at turn eight threw everything up into the air again.
Going into the final hour, the #7 car of now Marco Sorensen was still the lead Aston whilst the #33 car of King was still holding their own track position (third in class) which would take them the title as the #21 Comtoyou entry earned themselves a thirty second time penalty for violation of the blue flags (blocking most likely).
The #7 car then haemorrhaged positions as performance (and race damage) thwarted the efforts of the Dane aboard – something that would later see the car finish way down in P34 at the end. The #35 Walkenhorst AMR would have continued issues of tehir own as having already started from pit lane having not posted three individual qualifying runs, the car would later finish their season with a retirement with continuing technical issues.
At the end, the #33 Verstappen AMR was eventually brought home the best of the bunch again in P8 overall but more importantly P3 in class – enough for them to finally claim the Gold Class crown at the final time of asking. The remaining four AMR’s also all finished but sadly featured at the tail end of the pack between P34 for the #7 car to P49 for the #21 Comtoyou Racing car.
