GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup back in business at many-Cours this weekend

GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup back in business at many-Cours this weekend

Forty cars of the Gt World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Series will be back again this weekend for a quick-fire return to the racetrack, this time from Magny-Cours in France after its last round from Misano just two weeks ago.

Within that expected entry list will be the same three Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 cars from both the Comtoyou Racing and Walkenhorst Motorsport teams but with one of those crews reverting to its original driver line up.

Last time out, we of course saw the #21 Comtoyou Racing AMR of Jamie Day and Kobe Pauwels secure their first silver class win of the year in Sundays hour long race after a their P3 podium finish within the earlier race.

They were by far, the best result of the weekend from the three cars with the #35 Walkenhorst entry of Mateo Villagomez and Henrique Chaves struggling to break into the top ten of their elected Pro class whilst the #270 Comtoyou Racing bronze entry did improve from P10 in class in race one to P5 in class after race two.

That result for the #270 car came after Brazilian racer Sergio Sette Camara deputised for his countryman Raphael Suzuki for this round alongside that of Ricardo Baptista. Despite this change of line up and Sette Camara racing a GT3 and in Europe for the first time, the pairing had their best result to date. This time, Suzuki again races alongside Baptista again.

Results from Misano also lift the #21 crew up to fourth within their silver class drivers’ championship table, now just sixteen points behind the class leaders with four races still to run including Magny-Cours.

Three AMR Vantage GT3s for Gt World Challenge Sprint visit to Zandvoort this weekend

Three AMR Vantage GT3s for Gt World Challenge Sprint visit to Zandvoort this weekend

It’s another hellishly busy race week for the SRO organisation as they see both their European and North American arms of the business in full race mode this week at Spa, Zandvoort and Sebring.

Having already covered the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup Prologue events at Spa Francorchamps with today's and tomorrow's Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa Prologue test days, their European Sprint Cup and GT4 European Series sees themselves back in business this weekend with their second rounds of the season from the Dutch coastal circuit.

After having just two Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crews feature within the opening round of the Sprint season from Brands Hatch a couple of weeks ago, there will be three such examples this time around for Zandvoort where a second Comtoyou Racing crew will feature alongside that of their sister car and Walkenhorst Motorsport entry.

Also at Spa Francorchamps this week, the #21 Comtoyou Racing AMR of Jamie Day and Kobe Pauwels will be back within the silver class alongside the Pro class entry from the #35 Walkenhorst team for Mateo Villagomez and Henrique Chaves.

Brands Hatch proved to be a tough opening encounter for those two crews with a best result of the weekend fourth in class for the #21 car in race two whilst the #35 posted a best race result P8 in class in the same race.

They will this time be joined by Rafael Suzuki and Ricardo Baptista for the first time in this series after the Brazilian pair put in one event within the GT3 Winter Series from Valencia where a heavy impact from behind (through no fault of their own) ruined a podium winning start to their Comtoyou Vantage GT3 adventure togther in race one of that weekend. Hopefully they do not suffer any similar circumstances around the coastal dunes of Zandvoort as they race within the Bronze class.

Both AMR crews improve between races as the GTWCE Sprint Cup kicks off at Brands Hatch

Both AMR crews improve between races as the GTWCE Sprint Cup kicks off at Brands Hatch

The opening round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup from Brands Hatch at the weekend was something of the inevitable baptism of fire for most of the drivers aboard the Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crews, as the characteristics of the tight GP circuit at the Kent circuit made for some eventful racing.

Just the two AMR Vantage GT3 crews this time around, one from each of the Comtoyou Racing and Walkenhorst Motorsport stables as both cars carried at least one driver in their earlier stages of the GT3 racing career and with the Walkenhorst dipping their toe into the Sprint Cup scene for the first time amongst the thirty strong entry.

Racing this time in separate classes saw the #35 Walkenhorst crew of Henrique Chaves and Mateo Villagomez compete within the Pro class whilst the #21 Comtoyou Racing entry again stuck with the silver class for their drivers Jamie Day and Kobe Pauwels.

Sometimes fresh but otherwise pleasant track conditions blessed the strong grid and the large crowd as two one-hour races were in store after the preceding Free Practice, Pre-Qualifying and individual Qualifying sessions. P4 in class was the best starting position gained by Day ahead of his start in race 2 whilst the P10 in class was similarly placed in P12 and P9 in class for each race respectively.

Sunday made for a busy programme with race 1 starting at 11:00hrs with race 2 not that long after at 15:45hrs.

With Villagomez and Pauwels taking the start for race 1, everyone survived the bumping and grinding of the opening laps before the differences in pace stretched the grid, but many crews were already coming to the attention of Race Control for track limits. Both crews pitted at the first available opportunity from the mid table of the pack, but Day was rudely spun around by Lamborghini on his outlap that lost him time but sadly after that – neither Aston was to figure above P25 overall for the #35 and P27 for the #21 car.

For the later race 2, the sunshine had gone with cooler and cloudier conditions affecting the cars on track everyone again got through the opening laps although Chaves had to roll his sleeves up to get through from his P10 start and up into P8 by the end of lap one. Despite losing positions on that opening lap, Day retained his P4 place within silver.

A stranded car in the gravel just before the opening of the pit window delayed matters slightly as half the pack pitted at the first chance once the Safety Car was removed but another car stranded in the gravel would bring that back out again very soon.

Stops over but under a FCY, the #35 was still up within the top 10 overall whilst the #21 had retained its P18/P4 position as the race finally got back underway with just ten minutes remaining. Despite losing traction with fading tyres, the #35 Walkenhorst car of Villagomez managed to hang on until the end to finish P9 overall whilst the #21 crew finished the day P4 in silver.

The next round of the Sprint Cup Series will be from Zandvoort in Holland in just over three weeks’ time with the Spa 24 Test Day somewhere in-between.

Just two Aston Martins for this weekends GTWC Europe Sprint opener from Brands Hatch

Just two Aston Martins for this weekends GTWC Europe Sprint opener from Brands Hatch

As with any racing season, the news of tomorrow soon covers off the news from yesterday as we now look forward to another busy weekend of global GT racing for the many Aston Martin Racing powered teams.

Starting off in the UK we will see the opening round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Series around the Grand Prix loop of Brands Hatch this weekend. With the Endurance side of the equation already underway, this weekend’s pair of races will see just two AMR Vantage GT3 Evo’s compete amongst an expected grid size of thirty cars.

The entry list confirms the #21 Comtoyou Racing silver entry for drivers Jamie Day and Kobe Pauwels as well as the #35 Pro entry from the Walkenhorst Motorsport team for their driver Henrique Chaves and Mateo Villagomez. Whilst the #35 entry has remained static from its time of announcement earlier this year, the Belgian teams entries have been changed since Matisse Lismont departed the team in favour of a Corvette entry just before the start of the Endurance series with his space now taken up by an endurance/sprint entered Day, but with the total removal of their planned #210 entry.

That should have been for their new Brazilian pairing of Ricardo Baptista and Raphael Suzuki as they did within one round of the GT3 Winter Series earlier this year but with just Pro, silver and gold classes being competed at this weekend – that might explain way.

Whilst the abilities of Chaves are well documented, the reigning FFSA GT4 Silver Champion Villagomez is still at the start of his GT3 learning curve although this will not be his debut GT3 event having raced at the Bathurst 12hr and also double stinting within the Endurance Cup rounds with Walkenhorst.

Saturday will see the field to the track for Free Practice, Pre-Qualifying and Qualifying before race 1 at 11:00hrs local with race 2 soon after at 15:45hrs local.

Mixed fortunes for the two AMR teams at the GT Winter Series finale

Mixed fortunes for the two AMR teams at the GT Winter Series finale

It was something similar this weekend as the GT Winter Series also come to an end in Barcelona where we were fortunate enough to see both an Aston Martin Racing Vantage Evo from the Comtoyou Racing team and an older 16A variant from the Prosport Racing team.

Running the same calendar as the GT4 machinery before them, two thirty-minute sprint races would proceed the seasonal hour-long finale later on Sunday as both Kobe Pauwels and Matisse Lismont would be looking for much class winning success like last time out for them at Valencia in their #700 car whilst the #17 Prosport entry would see both Adrian Rziczny and Fabienne Wohlwend contest their first GT3 races.

A speedy Pauwels saw him take the race lead going into T1 for the first time and despite an early Safety Car held on to take a race win at the end with Rziczny would come home a very credible P9 overall/P6 in class.

Sadly, an opening lap multi-car incident claimed the #17 Prosport entry of Wohlwend on only the opening lap with front and rear damage having had the car snap away from under her during accelerating also preventing it taking part in the endurance race.

After a brief red flag for barrier repairs, it would only be a quick eight-minute dash to the flag to allow Lismont to claim another podium finish in the series with a P3 on track/P2 in class.

That obviously just left the #700 Comtoyou Racing car of Lismont on the grid for the final race of the year and starting from second on track, the team would be looking for a sweep of podium finishes before they moved onto their GT World Challenge Europe Prologue testing duties at Paul Ricard on Monday.

Despite taking the overall lead just before the pitstop window, the #700 was one of five cars awarded drive through penalties for incorrect starting procedures which obviously thwarted their earlier efforts -compounded by a Safety Car needed to remove a stranded car on track.

Entering pit lane under the Safety Car but held by the red light at the end of the lane, the #700 continued with its driver change to come out third on track with less than twenty minutes remaining. Posting repeated fastest laps, Pauwels chased the top two cars hard but having gained P2, the #700 team was advised that 35 seconds would be added to their race time for incorrect process with their earlier penalty.

That sadly took the potential P2 finishing position from the Comtoyou Racing team on the final lap with it dropping on adjustment to P6 overall/P5 in class at the end.

Comtoyou Racing find value to enter two Vantage GT3s into the GT Winter Series

Comtoyou Racing find value to enter two Vantage GT3s into the GT Winter Series

Whilst talking about the two Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s due to compete within this weekend’s third round of the GT4 Winter Series from Valencia yesterday, it appears that we either overlooked or completely missed the fact that Comtoyou Racing would also be in town with two of their AMR Vantage GT3’s.

For the Belgian based team, their two Vantage GT3 Evo entries will be running within the sister GT Winter Series within an expected grid of thirty-nine Cup 1, Cup 2, Cup 3, Cup 4, Cup 5, Cup X and GT3 based cars that are permitted to enter. Most of the Cup classes cater for the many challenge or trophy class of chassis before eight pure GT3 cars are listed at the tail of entry list.

These two Comtoyou Racing entries include two familiar faces in Matisse Lismont and Kobe Pauwels within the #700 car whilst two debuting Brazilian drivers in Ricardo Baptista and Rafael Suzuki will compete within the #270 car.

The latter have also been confirmed by the team as entries into this year’s GT World Challenge Sprint Series with the team.

Two gutsy displays from two Aston Martins in this weekends Dubai 24 start 2025 off in earnest

Two gutsy displays from two Aston Martins in this weekends Dubai 24 start 2025 off in earnest

The twentieth running of the 24H Series running of the Dubai 24 has just concluded and the race again did itself proud for the Creventic organisers and its sixty plus, multi-classed entries although it didn’t necessarily prove itself that way for some.

Indeed, one of the three Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 Evo’s entered didn’t actually make it to the race itself on Saturday morning after final night practice for the #41 Comtoyou Racing entry saw accident damage sustained whilst Russian driver Viacheslav Gutak was at the wheel.

Despite working upon the car overnight, the Belgian based team was eventually forced to retire the car just after the race had started and that sadly left Gutak, Dante Rappange, Nicholas Baert and Mex Jansen wondering about what might have been as they watched on with their #40 sister car.

That #40 Comtoyou Racing AMR of Jamie Day, Tom Van Rompuy, Matisse Lismont and Kobe Pauwels proved itself to be a class contender within their own GT3 Pr0-Am class during the opening half of the race before heavy contact from behind by the #710 Liepert Motorsport Lamborghini sent the #41 AMR destined for a too long a stop within its garage box for repairs to keep it anywhere in contention.

Eventually finishing eighteen laps down to the eventual winner, the #40 finished just outside of the top twenty in twenty - first position but that could easily have been so different had the car not been penalised so many times for track limits and/or speeding or overtaking whilst the race was under caution!! Despite of this, this was a great display from the young driver line up!

The best result however came from the #77 Earl Bamber Motorsport AMR Vantage GT3 team who, in their first 24-hour race eventually came home eighteenth overall and sixth within the GT3 Pro-Am class.

Despite running with a varied crew in terms of experience with two amateurs, one semi-Pro and one Pro driver, the Setiawan Santoso, Munkong and Tanart Sathienthirakul alongside Earl Bamber driven car went onto run a near flawless race to receive just one sixty second time penalty for overtaking during a caution period with no incidents to report on track!

Whilst we still await official confirmation from the Comtoyou Racing team about their 2025 campaigns, the EBM team will be back in 24H Series based racing next weekend at the 6hours of Abu Dhabi at the Yas Marina before being back to the Asian Le Mans Series with the same car but another crew at these two very circuits in early February.

Grid set ahead of the 20th running of the 24H Series Dubai 24

Grid set ahead of the 20th running of the 24H Series Dubai 24

Qualifying is now done for tomorrows start to the opening race of 2025 as the 24H Series celebrate the twentieth running of their Dubai 24 event.

Fielding another impressive grid of sixty-four mixed class entries, this year’s entry sees three Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 Evo’s entered – two from the Belgian based Comtoyou Racing team and another from the Asian based Earl Bamber Motorsport team.

With track action starting way back on Monday with private testing, officially timed track action didn’t start until today with Free Practice preceding three qualifying sessions per class of entry even though all three Aston’s would be running with a four-driver line up.

The nett result from Qualifying was that the #40 Comtoyou Racing AMR of Jamie Day Kobe Pauwels, Matiss Lismont and Tom Van Rompuy was the pick of the three as they will be starting the race from P16 overall / P5 within their own Pro-Am class.

Next will be the #77 EBM AMR of Setiawan Santoso, Munkong and Tanart Sathienthirakul alongside team boss himself, Earl Bamber will be starting from P21 overall – P8 in GT3 Pro-Am whilst the #41 Comtoyou entry of Viacheslav Gutak, Dante Rappange, Nicolas Baert and Mex Janson will be starting P25 overall – P7 in class after their three-run average was calculated.

Morning warm up at 09:40 starts the day off tomorrow with official photos within the pit lane preceding a 13:00hrs (local) start to the Dubai 24 at the Dubai Autodrome.

Three AMR teams fill in the blanks ahead of their Paul Ricard season opener this weekend

Three AMR teams fill in the blanks ahead of their Paul Ricard season opener this weekend

Two Aston Martin Racing powered teams have just completed their respective driver line up ahead of this weekend’s start to both the GT World Championship Endurance Cup and GT4 European Series from Paul Ricard.

Having already confirm three entries for the new Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 platforms amongst the Pro and Silver Classes, the Belgium Comtoyou Racing team still had their #11 Bronze class entry to confirm.

This week saw that final detail be revealed as being a driver line up of Porsche Cup racer John De Wilde, European Le Mans Series racer Job Van Uitert and TCR racer Kobe Pauwels ahead of this weekend’s three-hour opener.

In GT4, the GPA Racing team have also confirmed the remaining driver slot within their #39 AMR Vantage GT4 of Baudouin Detout as being Roberto Faria.

Having previously tested alongside various drivers, it will be the former Racar Motorsport entrant from the GT4 Winter Series who got the nod for this weekend’s pair of hour long races around the Mistral circuit.

Finally, the Racing Spirit of Leman team have also just confirmed that Forsetti sensation Jamie Day will be joining Teo Villagomez aboard their #82 car.
