A close run thing for the Archangel AMR Vantage GT4 at the Apex One 10 Hour enduro

It was a close-run thing for one of the Aston Martin Racing powered crews at the end of Saturday’s Apex One 10 Hour Endurance race at Sebring as they eventually had to settle for second in class at the chequered flag.

With the #66 Archangel AMR Vantage GT4 of Paul Holton, Madeline Stewart and Joshua Jacobs having started strongly during the opening Free Practice sessions leading the GT4 class in Practice 1 and Night Practice 2, the mixed driver line up came back to secure class pole position ahead of Saturdays marathon.

Despite having not participated within their own GT3 class Qualifying, the new #71 Rebel Rock Racing AMR Vantage GT3 of Frank DePew, Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis was still on hand to complete some racing laps with their new car although their ‘racing’ was limited to just a few hours of track time for their first event with their new GT3.

With just eight cars taking to the Sebring International Raceway for the race, track incident and accident was thankfully non-existent as their Code 60 safety measure on track was never utilised.

Initially losing the GT4 class lead to the #52 Kelly Moss Porsche at the start and for the first hour hours, the #66 Aston then took the class lead for the next three hours before eventually conceding the class win to the #52 crew at the end by just two laps.

Whilst the leading GT3 crews had completed 245 laps of the circuit in that ten-hour event, the #71 Rebel Rock had completed just 41 but for them, learning and familiarity rather than racing itself was the name of the game for them.

Second Aston Martin takes class pole in this weekends Apex One 10 Hour enduro

Second Aston Martin takes class pole in this weekends Apex One 10 Hour enduro

A second Aston Martin Racing powered crew appears present at this weekend’s Apex One 10 Hour Endurance race from Sebring as the Archangel Motorsport team field a Vantage GT4 car to go alongside the Vantage GT3 from the Rebel Rock Racing team.

Not being a topflight race series with a big eye upon timely information flow or indeed photos of the track action, this #66 Archangel entry appears to be driven by Paul Holton, Madeline Stewart and Joshua Jacobs.

We would be guessing that the Paul Holton is that of Team TGM fame whilst Stewart appears to be a young Porsche Carrera Cup North America series racer from New Zealand whilst Jacobs is something of an unknown. The crew later went on to secure a dominating GT4 class pole position in Qualifying.

As just eight cars are listed for tonight’s three qualifying sessions from the fourteen cars that tested, the #71 Rebel Rock AMR has not taken to the track for Qualifying.

Four AMR Vantage GT4 Evos for Michelin Pilot Challenges visit to Laguna Seca next week

Four AMR Vantage GT4 Evos for Michelin Pilot Challenges visit to Laguna Seca next week

Just four Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4s are expected for next weekend’s third round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series from the aptly named Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca circuit in California.

After the usual two opening rounds from both Daytona and Sebring, the style of racetrack for this second two-hour race of the season changes from that of just speed to one where a little more balance would be required.

The entry list shows a combined grid size of forty GS and TCR based cars with just over half of those being for the GT4 based GS entry. Team TGM returns with its pair of full season entries with Matt Plumb and Paul Holton again within the #46 car with team boss Ted Giovanis and Hugh Plumb aboard their #64 Bronze cup entry.

Frank DePew and Robin Liddell also resume their long-time driving arrangement within their #71 Rebel Rock entry whilst we welcome back husband and wife Ben and Christine Sloss within their #15 Van Der Steur entry after Ben was otherwise detained for the Sebring round.

The two Bronze Cup #15 and #64 entries both enjoyed a great start to the season with P2 and P3 (respectively) visits to the podium after the four-hour season opener at Daytona back in January before improving upon that next time out at Sebring with a P1 for the #64 crew followed up by a P2 for the ad-hoc #15 crew after that two-hour round.

Within the main competition, reigning GS Champion Matt Plumb and Holton have had to endure something of a challenging start to the season that saw a lowly finish at Daytona before being unable to capitalise upon their pole position at Sebring just a few weeks later. The #71 Rebel Rock crew meanwhile have been steadily improving from their P19 finish at Daytona to P8 (and were also in race winning contention) to finish eighth.

This third-round race will start at 15:45hrs local on Saturday 10th May.

Team TGM crowned multiple IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series Champions 2024 after Road Atlanta finale

Team TGM crowned multiple IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series Champions 2024 after Road Atlanta finale

A massive congratulations to Team TGM and their #46 Aston Martin Racing crew this evening after they won a trio of IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series Championships with their drivers Matt Plumb and Paul Holton after already having secured the Bronze Cup with their other race crew earlier this year.

Racing this afternoons final round of a ten round strong season around the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta circuit, the #46 AMR Vantage GT4 crew of Plumb and Holton again proved that the best way to defend a slender points lead going into the final round was by taking the race directly to their nearest opponents within the #28 Porsche.

Having started the season way back in late January at the opening four-hour round at Daytona with a P3 podium for drivers Plumb and (then) Owen Trinkler, the #46 pairing would end the season today with another (P2) podium finish to clinch the drivers title for Plumb as well as the Manufacturers title for AMR and the Teams title for TGM. Birthday boy Holton had to make do with a third placed finish within the GS class by virtue of having only stepped into the #46 car after Trinkler had to step away from racing after Daytona due to injuries sustained during an earlier testing accident.

Going into what was still always going to be a tense finale, the #46 car of Holton held the upper hand having secured another class pole position yesterday but had the #28 car of Steven McAleer close by on the third row although that would quickly become right alongside soon after the race started.

Early positional exchanges saw the race lead come and go for the #46 as the combined thirty-three strong grid of GS and TCR based cars completed the opening laps just as the first caution period hit just seven minutes into this two-hour race. Back to green and unfortunately back to another FCY as two other GS cars made contact at the restart leaving one buried into the outer tyre wall. Fraught for the #28 crew who needed to make up a points deficit but all the time, the race clock counted down for the #46.

Almost fifteen minutes lost, and it was finally back to green but the #28 made the best restart, taking the race lead from the #46 but with the #19 Van Der Steur car playing shotgun close behind although they were obviously racing a race of their own having finally lost any championship aspirations last time out at Indianapolis.

As the race finally settled, the new #50 Toyota to the grid had already moved up to take the lead but had already pit entrance as another GS car off track brought out the third FCY just as the minimum drive time had elapsed. Luckily for some, both the #28 and #46 had just made it into pit lane before that offering was closed by Race Control allowing both to refuel, tyre and driver change before getting back out without having lost too much time on track.

The #19 car would suffer front end damage as Van Der Steur misjudged the car in front slowing for its pit box, breaking off dive planes that would have affected the cars handling just as AMR factory driver Valentin Hasse-Clot was about to get in from P7 whilst the #88 Archangel car of Todd Coleman was next in P9, the #82 Ruckus Racing car of Brady Behrman P11 and the #64 Team TGM car of Ted Giovanis P14 at that point.

Getting ack to green with little over an hour to go, another brief FCY for debris on track again counted that race clock down just a little bit further for the #46 and that would eventually give all a final fifty-four-minute sprint to the flag. Fastest on track at the time was the #88 Archangel car of Aaron Telitz but he was struggling to move up higher than fifth at the time as the second half of the leading GS cars split strategies with the rest and pitted early within their stint for that final top up of fuel that would see them to the end (of which both the #88 and #19 Aston Martins were two of them).

Forty minutes, thirty minutes – the race was counting down but still the #46 car of Plumb held the upper hand as brother Hugh was leading the race within his #64 Team TGM AMR but there was no way he was ever going to make the chequered flag without stopping again or another long caution.

Having finally broken through the front TCR runners, it soon became a Team TGM 1-2 in the race as the #46 car followed the #64 until that had to pit for fuel with just ten minutes remaining. Getting pushed by the #91 Porsche behind, prospects of a final race win of the season where dashed when it was proved that the #91 was just too fast for the #46 car to risk everything with as a P2 finish in front of the #28 Porsche behind was always going to be enough anyway.

And that is how the 2024 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series finished for the Team TGM crew – P2 in the race with enough points to win not just the GS Drivers Championship for Plumb but also the Teams and Manufacturers titles to add to their Bronze Cup Championship won by Hugh Plumb and Ted Giovanis earlier in the season.

The #19 Van Der Steur crew ended what might be their final GT4 race (before moving up to GT3 (GTD) next season within the Weathertech Sportscar Championship Endurance Cup next season with a P4 finish, P5 for the dogged #88 Archangel crew, the #71 Rebel Rock AMR P9, P16 and another Bronze Cup win for the #64 crew P16 overall with the #82 Ruckus Racing with Van Der Steur finishing a busy weekend for them in P23.

And that was IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge 2024 before it starts again at Daytona early next year!!

A great day for the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 as success gained both at the front and in class yesterday

A great day for the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 as success gained both at the front and in class yesterday

Yesterday’s second round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series to Sebring in Florida proved itself to be a monumentally successful affair for the as four out of the six Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 entered came away with some silverware.

Following the trend of the opening round from Daytona back in late January, it was again the #46 Team TGM AMR of a revised driver line up of Hugh Plumb and Paul Holton (in for the still recuperating Owen Trinkler) who stole the march for their stablemates during the early sessions by Qualifying just off the front row in third. The #19 Van Der Steur AMR of Rory Van Der Steur and Valentin Hasse-Clot just lost out on a similar starting position as Qualifying came to an end on Thursday, but they would be just behind in fifth.

Like most races, qualifying only factors in the positions of each car as they cross the start line for the first time of asking and yesterday’s two-hour affair was no different as battles ensued and those in front tried to make their escape. Whilst the from AMR runners held station, those lower down the order had more work upon their hands as Todd Coleman in his #88 Archangel car was P14, Ramin Abdolvahabi in his #09 Automatic car was P21, Frank DePew in the new 2024 (and reliveried) Vantage GT4 was P22 whilst Ted Giovanis had TCR cars nibbling at his rear in P26.

Whilst Holton listed an early fastest lap aboard the #46 car, DePew received a warning about his start line car positioning but luckily there was no penalty to serve as the race continued into its first half hour.

Then, disaster came for Coleman and his #88 car as liquid was released, power being to fail before flames were seen to be licking the underneath of his Archangel prepared car as he dived off track in the search of track marshal intervention. Thankfully, one of the roadside mobile crews were quickly on scene with fire damage being kept to a minimum whilst the damage had already been done to Coleman’s third IMSA sanctioned race this season.

A lengthy clean up period obviously led to changes in strategies but with the forty-minute minimum drive time still to elapse, it would make for some interesting pit wall choices moving forward.

Taking their drive time length to the minimum limit, both the #71 Rebel Rock and #09 Automatic cars pitted for full service with forty-five-minute remaining but the entry angle of the #09 into their pit box meant for a time delaying push back as they swapped to Rob Ecklin for the final stint whilst Robin Liddell would get into the new version of Vantage GT4 for Rebel Rock.

Green, back to Full Course Yellow, back to green back to Safety car as cautions again bred cautions and all of that ultimately left us with a forty-minute sprint to the flag as the #71 had lifted itself up to P2 and the #19 VDS car of Hasse-Clot up to P3 by this stage.

Eighteen minutes to go and the #19 VDS car was having to fight hard to maintain its position with an eager BMW, Ford Mustang and McLaren bunching up behind him. Initially conceding T17 to the BMW, the Frenchman had other ideas as he undercut the #39 BMW to retake third and the chase to the podium.

Seven minutes to go and the chasing #44 Porsche that had been reeling in the #71 Aston up ahead suddenly pulled over (maybe fuel) giving Liddell the space that he needed to the end whilst contact behind the #19 VDS Aston saw both the charging BMW and McLaren eliminate each other from the proceedings to allow both Aston’s to finally come home unchallenged for an AMR 1-2 at the chequered flag.

Having started the race from P23 out of a GS class grid of twenty-six cars, the #71 Rebel Rock crew had worked miracles to achieve Aston Martin Racing’s first competitive race win for their new 2024 40A iteration of car in only its third race meeting whilst the Van Der Steur team also confirmed just how competitive the outgoing 17A version of the Vantage GT4 still was for some much-needed Championship points.

Further back, the #09 Automatic crew of Abdolvahabi and Ecklin secured a class win within their respective Bronze Cup whilst the #64 Team TGM Aston of Giovanis and Hugh Plumb came home P18 overall and P2 in Bronze Cup to round off a very achieving race afternoon in Florida. The #46 Team TGM Aston Martin also finished not totally out of it by coming home a warranted fourth overall whilst the #88 Archangel car was sadly another DNF.

Friday was a good day for the Aston Martin Racing powered teams – let’s see what the rest of it brings with the 12 Hours of Sebring and the three AMR Vantage GTD cars from both the Heart of Racing and Magnus racing teams.

And here's wishing Owen Trinkler a speedy recovery and return to a racetrack very soon!
