A determined showing from the TRG team in their first GT World Challenge America race from Sonoma
This weekend saw The Racers Group debut their new Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 within the GT World Challenge America Series with long time team driver Derek DeBoer joining forces with AMR factory driver Ross Gunn for at least part of the 2023 season at least.
Thanks to the unfortunate coinciding of events for the team stateside and Gunn’s existing racing commitments upon either side of the Atlantic, neither had had the chance to come together before the opening testing sessions to this opening race weekend so the squad were always to be on the ‘back foot!’.
Featuring like the Ian Lacey pairing of Drew Staveley and Frank Gannett of the last two seasons, the #007 TRG car would compete within the Pro-Am class amongst the eighteen entries listed as running.
Poor weather conditions during the earlier testing sessions changed their available data again as the conditions at least improved from wet to dry but then, the temperatures still stayed low which has become the latest issue for the new specification Pirelli tyre.
Saturdays opening ninety-minute race had DeBoer starting P16 before two early spinners saw and some good clean driving had seen him progress up to P11 before the end of his GT3 debuting stint at the halfway mark.
Benefitting by the fact of the pit window opening up first to the midfielders, Gunn would quickly be pushing even harder upon his new tyres in his first competitive venture around the Sonoma Raceway. Climbing as high a P5 in class, the blue Aston would eventually lose out to one of the newest Porsche’s before the pair eventually claimed P7 in class at the end.
Sunday’s second race would fair much the same for a team with an unfamiliar car with a driver pairing who had never worked together before now. In addition to that, they had an unfavourable Balance of Performance in the car which clearly lacked the grunt of similarly engineered cars up ahead that simply drove away from the midfield each time of asking.
With Gunn this time starting from nineth, the Vantage GT3 again struggled against the outright pace of the Mercedes AMG, Porsche 911, Acura NSX and the brand-new BMW M4 GT3’s and soon dropped a couple of positions before holding his own – again at the rear of the midfield.
Handing over to DeBoer from P11 in class, the American soon made some opportunities of his own against some more inexperienced racers than him to push the sveltely liveried car up to P6 in class by the close of play.
Clearly with anything new, you must start with what you have and the lack of time together pre-event was evident in comparison with their peers. With some decent running data now to work from and some pointers from Gunn in the set up and running condition within their chassis, hopefully some more improvements can be made before the next round of the Series from Nola Motorsport Park in just under a month’s time.
For Gunn – he is of course pre-occupied with the opening round of the British GT Championship from Oulton Park this weekend!

GT World Challenge America and GT4 America visit Nola Motorsport Park for the first time this weekend
Having been planned to compete at the still yet to be completed Ozarks International Raceway, the GT World Challenge America and GT4 America Series will this time compete at the Nola Motorsport Park in Louisiana for the first time as the GT America takes a time out having competed by themselves earlier in the year at St Petersburg.
With both series having started their 2022 season out at Sonoma on the west coast a month ago, we can again expect to see the #12 Ian Lacey prepared Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 of Drew Staveley and Frank Gannett Pro-Am entry amongst the twenty listed cars within the GT World Challenge America Series.
Sonoma again came along a bit too quick for the squad after delays from a late winter rebuild following an accident at the end of last season left them with little to no time to prepare but the team have been out testing at various locations since.
In GT4 America and its thirty-one entries are just the five Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s from the full season entrants of Bsport Racing, Heart of Racing, GMG Racing, Flying Lizards and the Chouest Povoledo Racing teams.
Last time out at Sonoma proved itself to be successful for the #15 Bsport AMR of Bryan Putt and Kenton Koch after they secured a double Pro-Am class win by the end of that weekends two one-hour races, a debut class P3 class podium during Saturday’s race for the #50 Flying Lizard car of Elias Sabo and Andy Lee and a P2 Pro-Am podium for Aaron Povoledo and Ross Chouest in their #50 car at the end of race 2.
The #25 Heart of Racing crew of Gary Newell and Ian James will be hoping for better fortunes as with only one chassis available at Sonoma by virtue of their second car still in transit back from the Dubai 24hr earlier this year, accident damage for Newell in GT America’s second race in California forced them to miss the second GT4 America race.
Whilst Jason Bell has enjoyed success in the opening rounds of the GT America Series, his exploits so far in the parallel GT4 America Series with Andrew Davis have so for been hard graft as, despite the success of their AMR stablemates around them, they only managed to score two P6 finishes at Sonoma.
The #888 Zelus Motorsport AMR GT4 that competed at Sonoma is not listed for this event.

Despite a race win, there was strife for both Astons as the WRL hit Barber Motorsport Park
When it works – it works but when it doesn’t, it all seems like hard work for no reward and that was what the second round of the 2022 World Racing League Series appeared to be like for the two Aston Martin Racing runners at Barber Motorsports Park last weekend.
With the opening round of the season from NOLA not running according to plan for the Prosport Competition AMR Vantage GT4 team with both technical and accident damage hindering both opening races of the year, it was hoped that last weekend’s 9 + 7-hour races would prove better luck for their driver line up of Dwayne Moses, Nick Pearson and Mark Doran.
Unfortunately again for the team, their #143 car didn’t progress further than the forty third lap of the winners completed two hundred and seventy five lap race – quite why we don’t know but we can see that the car also didn’t make for the start of Sundays shorter seven hour race as a direct consequence. Sporting a new front quarter going into the race and appearing intact at the end of the meeting, we can only surmise that incident or accident was had at some point during the weekend.
That being said, the #909 Automatic Racing entry of Brandon Kidd, Stephen Davison and (?) David Russell did make the best of the opening race on Saturday taking a P5 start through to an overall race win at the end of the day.
Even then, the #909 car suffered the same fate as their stablemates in race 1 with an unsightly DNF being listed against them by the of Sundays race.
Next round of the series will be from Mid-Ohio in early April.

Next stop Barber Motorsport for the two Aston Martin teams in WRL
Racing last time with SRO GT4 America Aston Martin racers Aaron Povoledo and Ross Chouest together with Matt Rivard and Zack Ping, a fuel pick-up issue three hours into the opening eight-hour race blighted their class P3 position start for them to lose too much time in pit lane to be contestable by the end before contact with another car ended their day early for the second race.
Both Chouest and Povoledo used the seat time in preparation for their SRO GT4 America and GT America season’s where Chouest just missed out on a class podium at the opening race of the GT America season opener at St Petersburg last weekend.
This weekend’s nine plus seven-hour races features a new driver line-up aboard their AMR Vantage GT4 GA spec’ car with team regular Dwayne Moses being joined by American Nick Pearson and British racer Mark Doran.
According to this weekend’s entry list, the #143 Prosport Competition Aston should be joined by the #909 Aston Martin from Automatic Racing – but then we saw that last time as well so that car is yet TBC.
