GT4 Cup: First win for Mallock in Spa

Friday, June 04, 2010

“This was a very good GT4 race”, were Kevin Veltman’s first words after the Friday evening GT4 European Cup race in Spa. Kevin Veltman finished third in his BMW, behind Michael Mallock and Paul Meijer, both in an Aston Martin GT4 and was very happy with this result. Up front Paul Meijer lost an almost certain win after a stop & go penalty for not respecting the minimum pit time. “That’s part of the game and we made a small mistake which costs us the victory, but at least I still score precious points in the championship.”

Paul Meijer started from pole position in his Rhesus Aston, with right behind him Michael Mallock in the RS Williams Aston Martin. Both Aston built up a small gap ahead of a group of cars fighting for third place: the IMS Ginetta, the BMW M3 of Veltman and local Menno Kuus, the second Rhesus Aston Martin of Raffaele Sangiuolo and Guiseppe De Pasquale and the RJN Nissan 350 Z of Lucas Ordonez. Throughout the race they had a fair battle for the remaining spot on the podium. Menno Kuus and the #8 Rhesus Aston both got a stop & go as also, for the same reason as the race leader. Finally Veltman made it into third, with Matt Nicoll Jones-Hunter Abott in fourth and Lucas Ordonez in fifth.

Best local boy was Jurgen Van Hover in the Speedlover Porsche, making it home in sixth, while other Belgians Menno Kuus and Albert Bloem made into eight and sixteenth.

In Supersport victory went to Gianni Guidici, followed by Athanasios Ladas.

Michael Mallock: “I’m very happy with this first victory of the season, which is also my third in Spa in three Belgian races! The start was very good, Paul Meijer did a good job leading the field, but I don’t think I could have beaten him without his stop & go.”
