Young Driver AMR: GT1 season concludes in Brazil and Argentina

The season for the Young Driver AMR-team in the inaugural FIA GT1-Word Championship concludes with back to back races in South America. The final two races take place this weekend at the Formula 1-track of Interlagos, Sao Paulo in Brazil and only seven days later the two Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9 will race for the last time this year at the scenic track of San Luis in Argentina. The two cars already arrived in Brazil last week and the two driver pairings of Darren Turner (GBR)/Tomas Enge (CZE) and Stefan Mücke (GER)/Christoffer Nygaard (DAN) are set to travel to Brazil today Wednesday. In the two races in South America, both the driver- and the team-championship will be decided. Young Driver AMR has the chance for top results in both championships in the first year in GT1-competition.

Cars and parts for the two races in Brazil and Argentina were sent to South America directly after the last race in Spain, some four weeks ago. The Young Driver AMR-Team received the cars Monday in the paddock at Interlagos. At the beginning of the month, the famous track hosted the penultimate round of the Formula 1, now the GT1 World Championship is set for the penultimate round. The track is considered a classic Grand Prix-track and the Young Driver Team has already proven several times this season, that this is a perfect hunting ground for it’s two V12-powered Aston Martin GT1-machines.

A big contrast to the multi-million-mega-city Sao Paulo is San Luis in Argentina, venue of the final round of the GT1-World Championship. San Luis, 2000km from Sao Paulo and located peripheral to the Sierras Grandes, offers a scenic track around a volcanic lake. Concrete walls very close to the track create street race feeling and require highest concentration and a zero-error job from the drivers.

The Young Driver AMR-driver squad have prepared themselves for the last two races in an extensive way in the simulator. Darren Turner, who runs a company, which rents and sells Formula 1-spec simulators, invited his colleagues to learn the track virtually in his simulators just last week.

The last two races of the GT1-World Championship will not only bring excitement in terms of new tracks, the championship will also be decided in Brazil or Argentina. With two races to go, Young Driver AMR is fourth in the team championship while Turner/Enge are fifth in the driver’s championship.

Young Driver AMR will be supported at the final two rounds of the GT1 World Championship by Union Engineering (www.union.dk) and Zegg Watches & Jewellery (www.zegg.ch).

Driver quotes before the final two races:

Darren Turner (#7 Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9): “We prepared a lot in the simulator for the last two races, so we know what to expect when we will hit the track for the first time. I haven’t raced on either of the two tracks yet, so I’m really looking forward to the experience. Interlagos seams to be one of those great Grand-Prix-circuits, a type of track on which we already have been successful this season. San Luis is the last race of the season, we have to be strong there, because that race will decide where it puts us in the championship.”

Tomas Enge (#7 Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9): “The final two races take part at tracks which are relatively unknown for everybody. Interlagos is a great track, I raced there in the past. The track offers elevation changes and some very nice corner. I expect the temperatures in Brazil and Argentina to be very warm. That is not necessarily an advantage for us, but we will see how that will work out. Argentina is a big unknown for everybody. While we don’t know the track, one thing is sure: We will give everything and hope to finish on the podium, as we want to conclude the season within the top three in the driver’s championship. We prepared for both races in Darren’s simulator, I’m really thankful that he gave us the opportunity to prepare quite well for the final races.”

Christoffer Nygaard (#8 Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9):

“Similar to the most of my colleagues, I haven’t yet raced in Brazil or Argentina. Judged by the layout, Sao Paulo is a track, which should suit us well. We learned both tracks in the simulator, which is a big help. Especially for San Luis, as it’s very difficult to learn this track. It seems to be a fast one, which is good for us. I hope a white Aston Martin will be on the podium after the two races at South America, and I hope it will be the number 8 car.”

Stefan Mücke (#8 Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9): “Both tracks are new to me, I’m quite excited. Darren invited us to learn both tracks in his simulator. That was a new experience and very helpful to learn the tracks. Interlagos as well as San Luis seam to be two nice tracks and I’m cautiously optimistic, that they will suit our car. As the tracks are an unknown territory for almost everybody, nobody has a big experience there. I hope that we left all our bad luck, that we faced in the last couple of races, in Europe and I’m looking forward for a nice and trouble free season finale in South America.”

Hardy Fischer, Teamchef Young Driver AMR: “I hope that we can conclude our first season in the GT1-World Championship in style with two very good results. After the last round in Spain, we prepared both cars for the South America trip and will start really well prepared in Brazil and Argentina. For both races, our team will be supported by our latest partners Union Engineering and Zegg Watches & Jewellery. I also want to thank Terra Computer for their support this season, Terra Computer provided laptop-computers for our engineers this season.“
