IMSA runners getting ready for Qualifying later today (Updated with session results)

Thursday, January 23, 2025

Final race preparations take another notch up for both the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship and Michelin Pilot Challenge Series runners and riders as they move into race qualifying mode later today ahead of their respective season openers this weekend.

With the weather forecast over Daytona International Speedway again looking possibly cold and wet again for today (drying out and warming up slightly over race weekend), that could still create a few issues for the two multi-classed series as the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series will be first to run their qualifying session just after lunch later today with the Weathertech Sportscar Challenge Series running just after that.

With the main series having run seven test sessions at last weekend’s Roar before the 24 test with a further with a further two Free Practice session before Qualifying, we cannot imagine for one minute that we have yet to see ultimate pace from any of the different manufacturer-based teams – especially after there was a revision to the Balance of Performance tables made after the Roar test.

Unfortunately, the four Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTD runners did not see any revisions made to their stated BoP from before the test as the Heart of Racing, Magnus Racing and Van Der Steur Racing teams take to the track again for the first time of race week later today.

This is also the first time that the IMSA Series has run with torque sensors as part of their BoP process.

UPDATE AFTER QUALIFYING

#007 Heart of Racing Marco Sorenson P10 GTD Pro
#19 Van Der Steur Valentin Hasse-Clot P6 GTD
#27 Heart of Racing Zacharie Robichon P7 GTD
#44 Magnus Racing John Potter P12 GTD

Then within the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series, the five Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 runners from the Van Der Steur Racing, Team TGM and Rebel Rock Racing teams will also get one final Free Practice session today before Qualifying for their four hour long opening race of the season on Friday.

They have already run in one Free Practice session since the non-obligatory Roar test weekend schedule with the #46 Team TGM AMR Vantage Evo of reigning champion Matt Plumb (with Paul Holton) the fastest of the five AMR’s but still just outside of the top ten in their GS class.

We have also welcomed the #82 Van Der Steur AMR entry of Brady Behrmann and Sammy Smith to the MPC proceedings for the first time after they could not make it to the Roar test.

UPDATE AFTER QUALIFYING

#82 Van Der Steur P10
#46 Team TGM P16
#71 Rebel Rock Racing P19
#15 Van Der Steur P21 - P4 Bronze Cup
#64 Team TGM P7 - P7 Bronze Cup
