The #59 Racing Spirit of Leman Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 of Clement Mateu, Erwan Bastard and Valentin Hasse-Clot missed out on the European Le Mans Series LMGT3 class crown after the final four-hour round of the Series from Portimao yesterday.

Having led the class after their class win at Spa Francorchamps, a more challenging round at Silverstone had seen the all French crew drop twelve points behind in the driver’s championship battle going into this weekend’s finale, but it was another crew who eventually came through to claim that prize at the end.

Mateu’s P2 qualifying position put the #59 in the best position possible over the then leading AF Corse Ferrari crew but the most direct championship threat was already in front of them in the form of the #82 TF Sport Corvette.

Putting in perhaps his best opening stint yet, Mateu wouldn’t be leaving Portugal empty handed as he was later awarded the Goodyear Wingfoot Award for the best driver in class for his efforts as he maintained a top four position in class through the course of his double stint.

Handing the car over to Bastard as the team’s silver driver, he too would maintain the teams fourth place position in class before handing the car over to AMR factory driver Hasse-Clot for that final dash to the flag.

Eventually finishing fifth on track, the #82 TF Sport Corvette had been dominant in their assault to the chequered flag and the LMGT3 Drivers Championship leading the pack all the way – congratulations to Tom Ferrier and his team.

That result left the #59 RSLM AMR crew finishing third overall within both the Driver’s Championship and Team’s Championship tables – just fourteen points behind the #82 crew and team.

All that was left for the team to do was to provide support to the three drivers who then used the car as part of the series Rookie Test on Sunday.
