Seven Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for the GT4 European Series finale in Jeddah next weekend

Seven Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for the GT4 European Series finale in Jeddah next weekend

It’s been a long time coming but the final round of the GT4 European Series is now just around the corner for those within the series about as they are about to make their way over to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Saudi Arabia for the first time.

Two months has now passed since the last round of a six round 2024 season, but two class championships remain on offer although (unfortunately) none of the full season Aston Martin Racing powered teams are in contention.

Within next weekend’s final round, another grid of thirty-five cars is expected although many are guest entries for this fly away round with one such Aston Martin Racing team fielding a clutch of new Vantage GT4’s for the first time.

From a full season entry perspective, the French based Mirage Racing are back with their two-car entry of Ruben Del Sarte and Josh Miller aboard their #5 silver class entry, and they are again joined by the #7 Pro-Am entry of Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub.

They will be joined by another two-silver classed AMR Vantage GT4 Evo’s from the Swiss based Racing Spirit of Leman team as Roberto Faria and Baudouin Detout again pair up within the #39 car whilst Jamie Day pairs with the 2024 FFSA GT4 Champion Matteo Villagomez within their #82 car.

Rounding off the five full season entries is the #72 GPA Racing crew of Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud within the Am class within their older 17A specification car.

We then have the two guesting entries from the Belgium based Comtoyou Racing team with their four locally based driver base who will race within the Pro-Am class for the #26 car and within the Am class for the #28 car for the two one-hour races again scheduled over next Saturday and Sundays evenings local time.

The Aston Martin Vantage GT4 was on pace at Monza but that wasn't always enough for some in the GT4 European Series

The Aston Martin Vantage GT4 was on pace at Monza but that wasn't always enough for some in the GT4 European Series

Whilst the penultimate round of the GT4 European Series from Monza this weekend gave us another quartet of podium finishing positions for a number of the six Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 powered crews, it also finally lost one class championship opportunity for one AMR powered crew and placed another onto the back foot going into the final round.

For the #72 GPA Racing crew of Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud, their Am Class endeavours were always going to be a long shot going into this final round in Europe before moving onto the season finale from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Having finished fourth in class after Saturday’s opener, the French duo needed to at least win and have the championship leaders fail to score in order to take the class fight to the final round.

Despite the championship leading Alpine crew crashing out of race two just after their pit stop, the #72 crew duo were unable to climb any higher than second in class before eventually finishing third for something of a bitter-sweet return to the class podium with the championship ultimately lost.

Then within the Pro-Am Class, we had the #7 Mirage Racing AMR Vantage GT4 of Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub lead the class into Monza and with a class win in Saturdays race – all was looking good. Unfortunately for these guys, a puncture early on into a lap forced the crew to limp around for most of the lap before ultimately finishing towards the rear of the remaining pack for a P9 finish in class.

That result allowed the #30 Porsche crew of Finn Zulauf and Max Kronberg to swap positions with the #7 Mirage crew within the Pro-Am Drivers Championship table to take a fifteen points lead with them to Jeddah.

Completing the podium run this weekend was the #82 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR crew of Jamie Day and recently declared FFSA GT4 Silver Champion Matteo Villagomez who completed a P3 double at Monza.

Sadly, too little too late for any championship aspirations but the fifteen points per race does lift them up to P7 within the drivers table with two races still to come.

We now have a long break whilst all the cars and equipment and maintained before being shipped out to Jeddah for the final two races over the weekend of the 29th and 30th of November for an event that practically nobody within the paddock will know anything about until they get there!

As a foot note - the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR of Alexandre Machado was involved in an almost obscured accident along the pit straight as the pack was released by the Safety Car for their final last lap dash to the flag. Whilst the Car was extensively damaged after impacting with the barriers/wall, the series has since reported that the driver has been medically checked over and is otherwise OK.

A reduced AMR headcount as all three classes in GT4 European may get decided at Monza next weekend

A reduced AMR headcount as all three classes in GT4 European may get decided at Monza next weekend

For several years an opening round to the GT4 European Series but this year the penultimate venue for the headline SRO GT4 series in Europe as another sizeable grid of fifty-two crew do battle again that is the Temple of Speed at Monza in Italy next weekend.

With this and the season finale from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia at the end of November still to come, the points haul still available from the season’s final four races are still enough for some to overcoming their existing points deficits to the present Am, Pro-Am and Silver class leaders – so all is far from over.

For what was another healthy Aston Martin Racing powered contingent again this season, the German based Prosport Racing team have this time called time on their endeavours within the series as both their previous #99 and #100 entries of Raphael Rennhofer/Hugo Sasse and Fabio Rauer and Hendrik Still have both been omitted from the provisional entry list for this event.

Indeed, it was only a couple of weeks ago that we saw Rennhofer, Sasse and Still all compete within two of the teams AMR Vantage GT3 cars at the last round of the ADAC GT Masters Series from Spa Francorchamps.

Other than that, the remaining six AMR Vantage GT4 crews remain unchanged from previous rounds as Florent Grizaud and Kevin Jimenez need to recoup a sixty eight points deficit within their Am Class with their #72 GPA Racing AMR, Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub maintain a marginal one point lead within their Pro-Am class with their newer #7 Mirage Racing AMR whilst the silver classed #5 Mirage Racing and #39, #74 and #82 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR entries are now all too far back in the table to trouble the championship leaders even if they had a 100% finishing rate in Italy.

Ironically, it was the #99 Prosport car of Sasse and Rennhofer who headed the Aston Martin powered contenders in nineth overall within the silver class.

Qualifying for both races precedes race one on Saturday (race one being waved off at 17:00hrs local before race two starting at 12:35hrs local on Sunday.

Another tough GT4 European meeting brings slight reward for two AMR powered crews

Another tough GT4 European meeting brings slight reward for two AMR powered crews

Another two frantic races from the GT4 European Series from Hockenheim this weekend saw little reward for the eight Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 crews amongst another healthy and highly competitive grid of fifty-one runners.

High temperatures and blistering sunshine this time around produced a differing set of considerations for the teams and drivers to make after the cooler temperatures and precipitation of the last round at Spa Francorchamps three weeks ago as tyre management again became the focus of their attention.

Saturday’s opening race saw Roberto Faria become the highest qualifying AMR driver in P6 within his (and Baudouin Detout’s) #39 Racing Spirit of Leman car with the sister #82 car of Mateo Villagomez (and Jamie Day) down in P10/

Unfortunately, their joint sister #74 car of Alexandre Machado (and Kevin Kullmann) didn’t see much of the opening race here either, following on from his Spa qualifying accident that sidelined the car for the entire round, as contact was made going into turn one for the first time that put paid to both their efforts.

With all the Aston’s looking slow compared to certainly the BMW’s, Ford’s and Alpine’s, early place losses were inevitable for all the AMR crews as the race eventually settled into a natural rhythm. The #100 Prosport Racing AMR of Fabio Rauer (with Henrik Still) was another early casualty as he slowed and stopped off track at T16, something that he and another car stopping brought out the Safety Car just ahead of the pit stop window.

Despite recovering somewhat from early race place losses, the #39 car of Faria would also not make the opening pit window after damage received from unseen contact with another car left them with no further to go in pit lane whilst the #5 Mirage Racing AMR of Josh Miller and Ruben Del Sarte saw them penalised with a revisit to pit lane for a too short a minimum pit stop time.

With all the stops over, the #84 RSLM car of Day was now the highest placed AMR in P8 although the #72 GPA Racing AMR of Florent Grizaud and Kevin Jimenez were hanging onto P3 in class within their Am class and with the #7 Mirage Racing Pro-Am entry of Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandre Vaintrub now P3 in theirs.

Another FCY and resulting Safety Car brought all the cars back together again with just 15 minutes of the hour-long race remaining for another frantic dash to the flag but as the laps countered off, tyres started to hinder some as the race eventually finished to another BMW powered win. The #82 car eventually finished P8 overall but whilst the #7 car hung on to take P2 in Pro-Am, the #72 GPA Racing car eventually finished third in theirs.

Sunday’s second race was very much of the same ilk as the Alpines, BMW’s and Ford’s raced off out front to leave the Aston Martins dicing to be the best of the rest again.

The #100 Prosport car of Still hadn’t got off to the best of starts having been consigned to the back of the grid but that would get even worse when the car again had to pull over out of the race with technical issues just after the halfway point for a double DNF.

Others, like the #82 RSLM were having to work very hard for their money just to remain in contention as there were some clearly faster cars out there than the Vantage GT4. A lengthy Safety Car period for two cars going off within the opening five minutes helped to manage tyre longevity at the expense of a thrilling first half of the race with the mainly faster drivers aboard.

The #5 Mirage car would again be in the wars as contact either side of the pit window saw firstly Miller lose ground before secondary contact that would see Del Sarte penalised for causing a collision before retiring themselves from the race as a result.

Another late Safety Car again brought the pack together with just ten minutes to go, but again, the Aston simply didn’t have the pace to compete with the brands ahead as any hopes of a podium finish within the silver class needing nothing short of a minor miracle with the #72 GPA crews hope of another class podium also being spun around at the hairpin and the #39 RSLM again in the wars with frontal damage.

At the flag, the only AMR crew celebrating were the #7 Mirage Racing Pro-Am crew of Safronov and Vaintrub as a last lap lunge earned them a class win to add to their P2 finish of Saturday to help elongate their championship lead.

The series now takes a few weeks off before their penultimate round of the season from Monza in late September before concluding in Saudi Arabia in late November.

Just the eight AMR Vantage GT4 crews again for next instalment of GT4 European Series

Just the eight AMR Vantage GT4 crews again for next instalment of GT4 European Series

A fifty-one strong GT4 field has descended upon the Hockenheimring in Germany for round four of the GT4 European Series.

Racing in support of this time, the GT world Challenge Europe Sprint Cup Series, this large grid is also again populated with the eight full season Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 crews from the Prosport Racing, Racing Spirit of Leman, GPA Racing and Mirage Racing teams.

Last time out for the series at Spa Francorchamps saw the whole range of results with some literally crashing out of the proceedings even before the weekend’s first race but with others taking class podium finishes within the opening hour-long race.

Results from the three rounds so far this season sees the #72 GPA Racing AMR entry of Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud hold second place within their class – albeit a point distant one to the leading crew fifty points ahead but there are certainly still plenty of remaining point available per remaining three rounds to change that.

Then within the Pro-Am class, the #7 Mirage Racing AMR of Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub hold a slender nine-point lead over their nearest rival within their 2024 Vantage GT4 Evo whilst in the silver class, it is the #99 Prosport Racing entry of Hugo Sasse and Raphael Rennhofer who the top Aston Martin powered position in fifth but again with their older 17A generation of car but with a huge sixty-six points in arrears.

There are no expected changes to these full season entries driver wise, but the guesting Forsetti Motorsport entry of the Spa round is not here (as expected) having been something of a toe in the water exercise for Mikey Porter after the British GT round in Belgium the weekend before the Spa GT4 European round.

Ruben Del Sarte/ Josh Miller #5 Mirage Racing, Roberto Faria/Baudouin Detout #39 Racing Spirit of Leman, Jamie Day/Mattio Villagomez #82 and David Pullman/Alexandre Machado #74 Racing Spirit of Leman and Fabio Rauer/Henrik Still #100 Prosport Racing complete the AMR powered line ups.

Private testing has already taken place at the former home to the German F1 Grand Prix with the #7 Mirage crew again setting the pace for the AMR powered contingent in P12 -half a second off the pace setting Pro-Am Audi.

Whilst the weather at the circuit has been hot and dry today, higher temperatures and rain in still in the forecast for later into Saturday and Sunday – just to keep things interesting for Qualifying on Saturday ahead of race 1 later in the day and race 2 on Sunday.

Spa delivers another eventful GT4 European round for the nine Aston Martin powered entries

Spa delivers another eventful GT4 European round for the nine Aston Martin powered entries

The third round of the GT4 European Series from Spa Francorchamps this weekend again provided us with another example of just why modern GT4 racing is so entertaining with its balanced competitive nature.

Whilst the two races over Friday night and Saturday morning provided that spectacle – it wasn’t always to the advantage of the nine Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 powered teams who were part of the original fifty-seven strong entry.

The first casualty was the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR of Alexandre Machado and David Kullmann after the young Brazilian lost control of his car during the first Qualifying session to impact heavily into the barriers at Les Combes. That car would play no further part in the proceedings.

With a change to their timetable thanks to the series support of the Spa 24 Hours, race one would be run into the evening of Friday and things looked promising at the start with the #99 Prosport Racing AMR of Hugo Sasse (and Raphael Rennhofer) on the second row of the grid with the #5 Mirage Racing AMR starting P8 with Ruben Del Sarte (and Josh Miller). The remaining Aston’s were spread between there back to P45 with the Am class challenging #72 GPA Racing car of Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud.

Inevitably, this last grid piling into turn one at La Source resulted in contact and another such loser was the #100 Prosport Racing car of Fabio Rauer and Henrik Still. Their race would end extremely quickly in the gravel with a rear wheel puncture – cause or effect??

With plenty of door banging and place changing racing over the next few laps, Sasse would still be holding P3 overall alongside an improving run by Mateo Villagomez within the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR as the pit window approached however, that would soon be delayed as other cars became beached within the gravel.

With that pit window being opened next time around having gone back to green it was to. Be another three to four laps before the actual running order became plain to see. The #99 retained P3 with Rennhofer now behind the wheel and Jamie Day was on another of his charges within the #74 car with the guesting Forsetti AMR of Mikey Porter and Aston Millar doing well in P19 overall.

As the light finally passed into dark, race one would end with an AMR P3 and P4 upfront (#99 and the #72 respectively) but with the #72 GPA Racing crew also claiming another P2 finish in class.

Saturday’s second race was a bright an early affair with another good AMR showing in earlier Qualifying that had three cars starting from a top ten grid position.

Like race one, there were early AMR powered casualties as the #72 GPA Racing car of Grizaud got banged into the retaining wall of the inside of turn one on the opening lap and with that FCY intervention, more would quickly follow.

With Day chasing down the top three in fourth and the #100 Prosport and #5 Mirage Racing cars of Still and Miller trying to make up for earlier mistakes, another FCY again interrupting the race flow for stranded car immediately before the opening of the pit window.

When things did go back to green and the pit lane opened, an unfortunate untimely release by the Mirage Racing team allowed their #5 car to drive into the side of the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman car of Villagomez breaking the #74 cars steering and earning the #5 car a later enforced drive through penalty for its efforts.

That incident put paid to any worthy Aston Martin powered challenge within race 2 with the #99 Prosport entry gaining more points with a P7 in class finish with the Forsetti Motorsport team finishing well with a P8 finish too in Silver Cup.

The next round of the season takes the more traditional eight AMR car entry to Hockenheim in about three weeks’ time.

Nine Vantage GT4s to compete at Spa this weekend

Nine Vantage GT4s to compete at Spa this weekend

Surprisingly still only their third round of the season so far sees a mighty fifty-seven GT4 crews arrive at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium earlier this week for the next two races in support of the headline act of the Crowdstrike Spa 24 Hours.

Within that healthy entry list, we will find nine Aston Martin Racing powered crews listed – one more than usual as Mikey Porter makes his first steps within the European series to go along with his British GT and GT Cup aspirations in his first year of GT racing. Unlike the other two series, Porter will this time be joined by former McLaren GT4 British GT4 racer Aston Millar within the #19 car.

Something else will be new this time around as the #39 AMR entry of Baudouin Detout and Roberto Faria will now be entered via the Racing Spirit of Leman team after the Frenchman parted company with the GPA Racing team after the last round from Misano.

Other than that, we believe that the remaining seven AMR entries remain constant from previous rounds with two new Vantage GT4 cars from the Mirage Racing team (for Ruben Del Sarte/Josh Miller and Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub); two more new Vantage GT4’ from the Racing Spirit of Leman team (for drivers Jamie Day/Mateo Villagomez and David Kullmann/Alexandre Machado) and two older 17A variants from the Prosport Racing team (for drivers Raphael Rennhofer/Hugo Sasse and Fabio Rauer and Henrik Still.

The #72 GPA Racing entry for Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud are this time the odd ones out with no sister car to detract the team’s attention from their own so that might now play in their favour as the battle out in the Am class.

Due to the Spa 24Hr race starting on Saturday, this GT4 European Series race timetable has therefore been brought forward to accommodate that with private testing already having been completed today before the grid goes into Free Practice tomorrow with Qualifying and race one running into Friday night before the second hour long race over midday on Saturday.

Race results from the season so far have seen the Aston Martin powered teams a little bit off the pace in both Silver and Pro-Am but in a prominent position in second within the Am Class. Certainly, two good results from Spa will boost anyone’s chances for the remainder of the season.

More new Vantage GT4 powered crews chase the silverware in this weekends GT4 European Series

More new Vantage GT4 powered crews chase the silverware in this weekends GT4 European Series

A massive forty-nine car line will grace the paddock at this weekend’s second round of the GT4 European Series with eight of those being current and past examples of the Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4.

Having opened the season at the spaciously fast Paul Ricard circuit in early April, this second round will be completely different as the Misano circuit offers little in terms of the opportunity to achieve terminal velocity and has everything to do with set up.

The last round at Paul Ricard saw class success for the #7 Mirage Racing crew of Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub who claimed the new Vantage GT4’s first podium finishes within Europe after their Pro-Am win in race one and second in race two.

The #72 GPA Racing AMR of Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud also secured some silverware at the opening round with a second-place finish in Am in race one and so did the #99 Prosport Racing AMR of Hugo Sasse and Raphael Rennhofer who turned a DNF in race one into a silver class race win in race two.

Joining them on the grid this weekend will be the #5 Mirage Racing AMR of Ruben Del Sarte and Josh Miller who get to race their new 40A variant of the Vantage GT4 for the first after they raced their older 17A variant in France. It is the same for the #39 GPA Racing crew of Baudouin Detout and Roberto Faria after their new chassis was delivered to them just after the opening round.

The #100 Prosport Racing AMR entry for Hendrik Still and Fabio Rauer join their sister #99 car again as do the pair of Racing Spirit of Leman entries of Alexandre Machado/David Kullmann (#74) and Mateo Villagomez/Jamie Day (#82) with their pair of new Vantage GT4’s.

As usual, the series will have just completed private testing at the circuit today before going into more formally timed sessions of Free Practice and Pre-Qualifying of tomorrow. Qualifying on Saturday will precede race one on Saturday before rounding off the weekend at Sunday lunchtime.

A race win and a class second the results of GT4 European Series second race of its season opening weekend

A race win and a class second the results of GT4 European Series second race of its season opening weekend

This morning’s second race of the opening round of the GT4 European Series from Paul Ricard again proved itself to be worthwhile for both former and newer examples of the Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4, although there was more bad news for one.

Despite having clung on to an Am class second place finish in yesterday’s season opener, heavy contact made by Kevin Jimenez within his #72 GPA Racing AMR on the final lap proved itself to be too severe for the team to repair on site so he and co-driver, Florent Grizaud would have to sit this one out!

Failing that, Sunday’s grid proved to be another fine achievement for many of the seven remaining Aston Martin Racing powered pairings as the two Prosport Racing AMR’s of Henrik Still and Fabio Rauer secured overall pole position with their #100 car with their #99 sister car of Raphael Rennhofer and Hugo Sasse alongside in second. The new GPA Racing #39 line up of Roberto Faria and Baudouin Detout was third with the #82 Racing Spirit of Leman car of Jamie Day and Matteo Villagomez completing an Aston Martin dominated top 5.

Surviving the opening sequence of corners to come down the Mistral straight with an AMR 1-2-3, Faria soon made a successful move into the chicane for P2 from the #99 Prosport car with Day consolidating his position if fifth.

Early disappointment however came to the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR of Alex Machado after contact with the #20 Mercedes on only the second lap for their first DNF of the season leaving the new Vantage GT4 of Day to chase down the three older iterations still in fifth.

As the pit window opened it was still and AMR 1-2-3 with the #100 Prosport car still leading the #39 GPA Racing car in second and the #99 Prosport back in third having had something of a second wind in the latter stages of the openings stint but the #100 car would lose the lead thanks to a slow pit stop where it lost nearly seven seconds to its stablemate – the #99 car of Sasse now led the race with the #100 car in third.

Further down the order, the #7 Mirage Pro-Am runner of Stanislav Safronov and Aleks Vaintrub was again having another good run after yesterday’s class win with their new 2024 Vantage, battling hard with the new Mustang’s from the Academy team before finally putting daylight between them and Matt Nichol-Jones.

Thankfully this time, there was no final lap incident as the #99 Prosport came home to take their first overall race win of the GT4 European season with the sister #100 eventually coming home in fourth having led the opening half to the hour-long race whilst the #7 Mirage Pro-Am crew of Safronov and Vaintrub claimed another visit to the class podium in second.

Next stop is Misano in the middle of May.

Another feisty opening race of the GT4 European Series leads to two AMR podium finishes

Another feisty opening race of the GT4 European Series leads to two AMR podium finishes

Europe’s best GT4 series got underway from the Circuit Paul Ricard in France earlier today as a massive forty-eight strong grid raced the opening race of the GT4 European Series with eight Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s amongst them.

Presenting a convenient formation of two such cars from the Racing Spirit of Leman, Prosport Racing, GPA Racing and Mirage Racing between them, it was the #99 Prosport entry of Hugo Sasse who was best placed after Q1, starting today’s opening hour-long race in P3 with the #7 Mirage Racing AMR of Stanislav Safronov alongside in P4 as this race also presented another race in 2019 AMR Vantage GT4 competing against the brand new 2024 Vantage GT4 Evo again.

Tempered slightly by a T1 Safety car requirement after mid pack contact, both leading Aston’s held track position relative to their starting position whilst the #5 Mirage AMR of Ruben Del Sarte found himself under intense pressure slightly further back.

After the pit stop, the #99 of Raphael Rennhofer continued to hold third overall whilst the new #7 Mirage car of Aleksandr Vaintrub held onto the Pro-Am lead in P5. Further back Josh Miller was peddling his #5 Mirage AMR hard to elevate his track position after Ruben Del Sarte had become otherwise distracted into on-track battles that would drop them down the order.

The #72 GPA Racing duo of Florent Grizaud and Kevin Jimenez were doing what they do best within their Am Class after the former had qualified their rebranded AMR second and for Jimenez to maintain that position after the stop.

With just ten minutes remaining, disaster struck the #99 Prosport car as Rennhofer suffered a mechanical failure of the front which left a wheel wobbling precariously as he tried to limp back to the pit lane and Miller became the lead Aston Martin runner in P6.

Onto the final lap, contact for the #72 car slowed the GPA racing Aston Martin down but Jimenez was able to drag his car home to claim a P2 Am podium finish but after the race, the #5 Mirage of Miller/Del Sarte Aston Martin was given a five second time penalty (track limits) which then placed it behind the #82 Racing Spirit of Leman and #100 Prosport Racing Aston Martin in P7, P8 and P9 respectively.

In Pro-Am however, the #7 Mirage Racing Aston Martin won their class.

Tomorrows race should be much of the same!
