Young Driver AMR: Le Mans Series 1000km of Spa race report

Young Driver AMR had back luck in a chaotic 1000km of Spa, which was halted for one hour due to a blackout of the tracks power supply. The race, that should be the final rehearsal for the first start of Young Driver AMR in the legendary 24h hours of Le Mans (12./13. June), did not bring a result for the German team. After a not trouble free race and finally an accident, the Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin DBR9 of Christoffer Nygaard (DK), Tomas Enge (CZ) and Stefan Mücke (D) had to retire early.

Tomas Enge started the race in the Aston Martin DBR9 from fourth position in the GT1-class under difficult conditions with light rain. The start of the race went promising for the Young Driver AMR, Enge soon run second in the GT1-class. But then a problem with the water pump required a long pit stop and brought the Young Driver AMR out of contention for the class victory. After a successful repair, Christoffer Nygaard rejoined to race, but then the Aston Martin DBR9 had to retire early from the race after an accident. Christoffer Nygaard went a little bit too wide in lap 82 at “Blanchimont”, one of the high-speed corners of the legendary Belgian track, and touched the turf. The Young Dane lost control of the car on the wet turf and crashed into the barrier. Nygaard was unhurt, but the DBR9 was heavily damaged, resulting into an early end of the race for the Young Driver AMR team.

The Young Driver AMR team has now a busy job to repair the car for the next race, the GT1 World Championship round at Brno (CZ), and hopes for better luck at the 24h of Le Mans in June.
