Academy Motorsport in Euro GT Series

An existing team fielding new GT machinery as they are, Academy Motorsport went in search of some European GT mileage at the weekend in the form of the Euro Series by Nova Race at Le Circuit Paul Ricard in southern France.

Entering their #61 Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT4 with regular British GT driver Will Moore together with team manager Matt Nichol-Jones into what must have been a disappointing for the organisers 11 car grid the Aston was somewhat of a rose stuck between the mainly Ginetta G50 thorns.

With a meeting format of 2x 50minute free practice with a 30 minute qualifying period prior to 2x 50minute races spread between european circuits in France, Slovakia, Austria, Belgium and Italy all would appear well with greater numbers.

With Will Moore qualifying in P6 for Race 1 all was good until he was tapped into a 180 spin by one of the Ginetta's in the twisty section leaving him plumb last at the end of lap 1 but by the time of the pit stops some thirty minutes later he had fought his way back up to sixth. With Nichol-Jones then taking over he then took the fight to the Ginetta's gaining another place to finish P5 at the end.

For Race 2 Moore again qualified the car this time in P3 and very quickly took the race lead in the opening quarter of the first lap - briefly! Entering into the faster final corners of the lap Moore lost the rear end of the car, first spinning on the racing line before the car begin to pirouette into the inside of the corner before slamming heavily into the concrete wall, deranging its front left suspension and retiring the car on the spot.

For what should have been a simple exercise of gaining critical race mileage following a somewhat unfortunate start to their British GT season the team now have a long distance to travel home with a damaged car all in readiness of Round 3 of the British GT championship at Rockingham next weekend.
