Beechdean AMR looking for more points in Italy

Wednesday, May 08, 2019

Having had something of a quick shakedown test at Snetterton last Friday, Beechdean AMR have travelled out to Monza for the second round of the Michelin Le Mans Cup this weekend with their Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3.

Being seen as something of a 'cheaper' alternative in the quest for that illusive automatic invitation to race a the 24hrs of Le Mans, team boss Andrew Howard and co driver Ross Gunn will be hoping to avoid both the technical issues and rule book transgressions that blighted their opening round attempts at Paul Ricard a month ago.

Undefined technical issues with their car meant that Gunn was unable to post a Qualifying time which in turn meant that the #99 car had to start from the rear of the grid. Despite a decent come back fight by Howard through the GT3 field, he unfortunately pitted in the midst of a Safety Car period and a departing Gunn was adjudged (as did many others) to have left the pit lane beyond that of the controlling red light. That mistake cost the team a two minute stop and hold penalty that would cast them down the scoring sheet although at least they came way with ten vital championship points.

Moving to the fast, sweeping circuit that is Monza it will be interesting to see how their V8 turbo charged Vantage GT3 fairs in the performance stakes to it rivalling Ferrari, Porsche's and Mercedes as time and time agin this season already we have heard 'grumblings' of power inequality amongst the marques in differing series/championships.

First track action will be on Friday morning (although we do believe that they are 'testing' there today) with the first hour long Free Practice sessions before Qualifying on Saturday morning. The start of the two hour race begins at 16:00hrs (local) on Saturday afternoon.
