R Racing flying the AMR flag at the recent British GT test at Oulton Park

Thursday, March 03, 2022

Was it the Oulton Park weather, commitments elsewhere early next week or something completely different that kept away many of the already confirmed contenders for the 2022 British GT Championship away from the Cheshire circuit and yesterday’s ‘official’ test?

With no Media Day again being held this year, it has been typical for many of the teams entered to concentrate much of their pre-season testing to circuits like Oulton Park and Donington Park which host the opening two races of the season and then two rounds within the season respectively.

Whilst the TSL Timing screen did only depict eight cars in attendance, we do know that the R Racing Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 of Josh Miller was also in attendance and did circulate around the track, but a faulty transponder kept them from collating their lap times.

The R Racing AMR was of course one of the first cars to publicly commit to the 2022 season as the former Ginetta Junior racer steps up to GT4 for the first time with an as yet undetermined co-driver. Although the team was at Oulton Park with the recently announced D’Station Racing AMR Vantage GTE World Endurance Championship driver Charlie Fagg, we have been told not to read too much into this as the team has been testing at both Donington and Brands Hatch with a number of possible suiters for the young Miller since collected their new car from Prodrive only a few weeks ago.

Missing from the test was the Newbridge Motorsport AMR Vantage GT4 of Matt Topham and Darren Turner – so far, the second of only two Aston Martin teams to commit to the national championship so far but Topham later posted details of himself testing in a Caterham around an also soggy Donington track yesterday.

No news from the likes of Beechdean AMR so far in terms of any AMR GT3 attendance this year but they are now linked to a possible GT World Challenge Endurance Cup commitment this season following a recent two car test in Portimao.

The opening round of the British GT Championship kicks off at Oulton Park over the 16-18th April.
