All going well until the end for the Feathers Motorsport team as the GT Cup visited Brands Hatch (Updated)

Monday, May 01, 2023

The second round of the GT Cup Championship would turn into another useful points haul for the Feathers Motorsport Aston Martin Racing Vantage duo of James Guess and Tom Canning, but the final race of the day would leave them with something of a sour taste.

This time competing around the Grand Prix Circuit of Brands Hatch for now customary solo sprint and then pit stop punctuated endurance round per day, the #82 Feathers GTH classed Aston Martin would not have it all their own way Qualifying only fourth in the eight strong class going in race one.

Running again as a solo driver for the sprint race, Guess would have to be content with a P3 finish in class behind two similarly powerful Mercedes AMG GT4 entries and it would be a similar result in the opening endurance round of the weekend when Guess and Canning eventually came through again third in place behind the same pair of Mercedes.

Sunday’s Qualifier for the day’s opening sprint round would see Guess start fifth quickest but would eventually co9me through to finish one step higher upon the podium in second. The issue came with the weekend’s concluding endurance round after a banzai stint from Canning took the chequered flag to apparently win the race within the GTH class only for all bar one GTH classed car to be disqualified post-race for an apparent breach of Safety Car procedures (exactly what is still yet to be determined).

Despite this, the pair still retain their lead within the GTH Class but slip down to fourth within the overall Championship table as they look ahead to the third round from Snetterton in four weeks’ time.

UPDATE

A message from Tom confirmed that during a Safety Car period, a GT3 ahead appeared to slow and pull to one side of the circuit potentially indicating a problem. Most of the GTH class elected to pass that car whilst in the Safety Car train and were adjudged by Race Control to have breached Safety Car regulations of no overtaking.
