Mitchell reigns supreme winning China GT Championship with AMR

Another great weekend for Aston Martin Racing success around the world today as Jack Mitchell todays secures the China GT Championship GT4 Drivers title alongside China Equity AMR winning the Team title in Shanghai this earlier morning.

With the results still provisional, todays final race of the season was certainly something of a nervy one as Stanley Yang had to fend off the close attention of the #540 McLaren to a point where both cars actually collided (twice) with one another on only the first corner of the second lap. That contact proved to be the end of the race for the #540 car first spinning and then stopping out on track but at least Yang was able to continue and hold station on track in P3 although his speed had dropped slightly going into the pit stop window.

The cars of the weekend were clearly both KTM X-Bows who had already locked out two steps of the GT4 podium yesterday with Mitchell and Yang splitting the pair to claim second in Race 1 and to go into todays final race 8 crucial points ahead of the #570 McLaren of David McKintyre. The weekend was always going to be difficult for the McLaren due to the superiority of the AMR V8 Vantage GT4 around the Shanghai circuit but the final nail went into the #570's Championship's aspirations after contact with the #619 China Equity AMR car that damaged the McLaren's suspension and power steering - a situation that could well have happened with the #618 Mitchell/Yang car earlier in the race - then the championship positions would have been reversed!

After the pit stops Mitchell was to emerge from the pits to continue the battle with the KTM's with the sister #999 China Equity car alongside. With their championship rivals at the Winning Team clearly not having the track position to contest the championship fight the race was to end with David Pun graciously allowing Mitchell past just before the flag in order for the #618 car to claim both P3 in the race but also the GT4 Drivers and Team Championships in the process.

Well done to the China Equity AMR team for putting the resources into place for the 2018 season to have a truely competitive chance this year after their tentative steps in the clearly expanding series last year where they finished third overall. With the team a significant investor within the Aston Martin Lagonda company we would assume that they will be back in 2019 with several examples of certainly the new AMR Vantage GT4 and even maybe the new GT3 Vantage.

Obviously well done to Jack Mitchell who claims his second GT4 Drivers Championship of the year after lifting the British GT GT4 Drivers Championship last month and we look forward to where about you might pop up in next year as well!

China GT 2018 kicks off this weekend

China GT 2018 kicks off this weekend

The China GT Championship 2018 kicks off this weekend from the Zhuhai International Circuit in southern China this weekend sporting an as yet officially declared entry list.

Some cars from the Championship did figure in a recent Official Test last month from the Beijing Goldenport Circuit but that transpired into something of a washout with many of the teams now apparently using the availability of the circuit this week for some last minute testing.

What we believe so far is that China Equity AMR will be entering four of their Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4's into the Pro-Am class (including the two new chassis flown over from Prodrive in time for last months TEST) but last years Customer Team, Zea Fia Racing will not be taking part in the Championship this year.

Having taken third in the GT4 class for the team's Stanley Yang last year it was hoped that two familiar names from the UK would be taking part in the full season alongside a more 'local' Am driver each but that appears now not to be the case.

Hopefully, details will be confirmed by the Championship over the next couple of days.

China Equity AMR gears up for new China GT season

China Equity AMR gears up for new China GT season

It was something of a wild return to the track for the teams of the China GT Championship as they hit the Beijing Goldenport circuit for their three day pre-season test earlier this week.

Unfortunately for those who attended, track time was somewhat limited as torrential rain hit China's capital for the second and third days of the test as well as smog affecting the opening day as well.

For the Prodrive supported China Equity AMR team, it looks like their two new V8 Vantage GT4's did indeed arrive from the factory just in time for the test as four cars lined up in the garages at the test - two in plain white and presumably the two new chassis' plus two featuring last years colours schemes.

With the teams two British drivers (Jack Mitchell and Ross Gunn) absent from the test, driving duties were left to others with the series listing Chen Wen and Sen Cheng being the fastest GT4 for the team in the opening session on day 1 just ahead of fellow China Equity driver Huang Yiqing.

Having lost virtually all of day 2, the team's Stanley Yang clocked the fastest GT4 time on the final day as the Championship now looks forward to the opening races of the new season from Zhuhai in two weeks time.

Gunn makes his mark as China Equity AMR excel in Shanghai

Gunn makes his mark as China Equity AMR excel in Shanghai

Beechdean AMR's Ross Gunn made his presence well and truly felt at the fourth round of the China GT series in Shanghai at the weekend as he returned to GT4 racing in his first ever visit to the Far East.

Flown in by Aston Martin Racing to support the China Equity AMR team, Gunn formed half of the driver line in a second AMR V8 Vantage GT4 being fielded by the team after a quiet debut in the series way back at the first round.

It took Gunn just up to Qualifying for Race 1 to shine, placing his #618 Vantage on Pole and beating the championship's more established X-Treme Motorsport KTM X-Bow by over 1.5 seconds with the team's sister #77 car claiming third to boot.

The race however would be unkind to the #618 as a spark plug issue would loose the car time in pit lane dropping them down to P4 overall at the chequered flag but at least that result earned the #618 a P2 in the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge result! The #77 car would finish P2 overall and P1 in GT4 Challenge.

The next day, and with jet lag really setting in, Gunn's #618 car again place itself on the front row for Sunday's Race but the hour race would filled with drama which would ultimately claim for half of the entire race entry. Gunn's team mate in the #618, Yang Mengqiao briefly snatched the lead from the flaming Winning Team Mclaren 570s only to collide with the X-Treme Motorsport X-Bow a few corners later in an accident that would see both cars retire. Just a couple of laps later the #77 China Equity AMR car would also come to a stop out on circuit with an undiagnosed issue.

Competing alongside China Equity AMR again were of course AMR customer team and full season entries from ZEA FEA Racing and their two V8 Vantage GT4's. Whilst both cars had a disappointing Race 1 with lowly finishes they were at least rewarded in Race 2 with a P2 and P4 places, albeit down to those ahead coming to a premature end.

The China GT Championship now moves on to the Chendu International Circuit in middle China for the penultimate round in a months time.

Four AMR Vantage GT4's at Shanghai?

Four AMR Vantage GT4's at Shanghai?

This weekend sees the return of the China GT Championship following their month long summer break  for their fourth round at the Shanghai International Circuit.

Joining the GT4 contingent for this round will be a brace of Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4's from the China Equity AMR team who return to the championship for the first time since the opening round of the seasoning Beijing where the team enjoyed podium finishes in the opening two races.

For Shanghai, China Equity AMR have called upon the racing services of non other than former British GT GT4 Champion and Beechdean AMR European Le Mans driver Ross Gunn who shall co-pilot the teams #618 car as he and the Prodrive factory supported team look to elevate their championship position from the foot of the table.

Also for Shanghai, the AMR Vantage GT4 shall enjoy a favourable bespoke China GT Balance of Performance by means of a 20kg weight reduction whilst the class's KTM, McLaren and Lotus will endure a significant base weight increase amongst other factors.

In the absence of an official entry list, we hope that the AMR customer team ZEA FEA Racing also field their two AMR Vantage GT4's and bolster their position in the GT4 Championship standings after their steady stream of results up until now.

Gunn set to race in the far east

Gunn set to race in the far east

It was great to read this piece from Daliysportscar.com today of Ross Gunn having his driving services promoted to assist the Prodrive supported China Equity Racing team at their next round of the China GT Championship in Shanghai in a few weeks time.

With the China GT Championship permitting GT4's to be entered into their new GTC/GT4 races for the first time this season, China Equity Racing (who's parent company is a major stakeholder within Aston Martin Lagonda) was supposed to have had four cars entered into the previous three rounds but to date has only appeared at both the Official Test and opening two races of the season in Beijing.

Since then, customer team ZEA FIA Racing have been left racing for the AMR marque with some good results admittedly and Gunn's arrival into the Championship will (depending of the competence of his co driver of course) really take the race to the season dominating McLaren 570s and KTM X-Bow's.

We are also aware of another V8 Vantage GT4 being dispatched to China form the Prodrive factory only three weeks ago!
