Motorbase taking a step back from GT racing

Motorbase taking a step back from GT racing

It was with great sadness to read today that Motorbase Performance have elected to take a step back from any GT programme in 2017 in favour of their more coveted and successful BTCC endeavours.

Although disappointing, todays news comes as no real surprise with the team having endured difficult season's in both the Blancpain GT Series with the Oman Racing squad of Ahmad Al Harthy, Jonny Adam and Devon Modell and the British GT Championships Ross Wylie and Phil Dryburgh this year.

We can be assured that the David Bartrum team will have made this decision on a strict business criteria rather than any emotional impulse and with the team having spent nearly twice as long in BTCC than in GT it may have been an easy choice.

“We’ve enjoyed five fantastic years racing in the GT world – taking both the overall Driver and Team Championship crowns in the British GT Championship and podiums in the Blancpain Endurance Cup and Gulf 12 Hours;” explained Bartrum. “We’ve raced with and against some great people in that time and it’s by no means the end of sports car racing for Motorbase, but I feel that it’s the right time for us to regroup and to put all of our efforts into building on last season’s BTCC success.

This news and the teams early withdrawal from next weekends Gulf 12Hr event, despite finishing last years event in third place, may simply be done to the team loosing out on Omani sponsorship money as Ahmad Al Harthy looks to continue his motor racing elsewhere and in other platforms? It may also mean that Aston Martin Racing have no racing presence in the prestigious Blancpain series in 2017!

Details of one chassis sale can still be found HERE

They will be missed and we hope that they return to GT racing soon.

Speedworks MS selling championship winning GT4

Speedworks MS selling championship winning GT4

Sadly, it appears that Speedworks Motorsport are looking to off load their Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 that they used to great effect in the Creventic International Endurance Series.

Having secured the SP3 Championship with the car back in 2015 with John Gilbert and Devon Modell the car has not seen on a competitive race since the Dubai 24 in January 2016 when a promising run was eventually thwarted by terminal technical issues.

Despite the team testing with the car in October the car is now being offered for sale in its bespoke endurance running format on the Racecars Direct website - details HERE

Hopefully someone will snap this up and get it entered into the 24H Series sometime soon.

Oman Racing look to see out 2016 Blancpain on a high

Oman Racing look to see out 2016 Blancpain on a high

The fifth and final round of the 2016 Blancpain Endurance Cup sees the Oman Racing Team head to Germany’s iconic Nürburgring with the aim of securing a top three finish in the Pro-Am Standings this coming weekend (September 17/18).

56 GT3 cars from the world’s most prestigious marques are expected to descend on the Eifel circuit for the 3-hour-long season finale with the Oman Racing Team Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 being the sole representative of the esteemed British brand.

Ahmad Al Harthy, Devon Modell and Jonny Adam – who successfully secured his 2nd consecutive British GT title last weekend - all return to the #44 Aston to complete the squad’s first full season in the Pro-Am class. The trio currently lie in 3rd place in the Pro-Am standings and head to the world-famous track in confident form looking to maintain their position as the championship draws to its conclusion.

After a dream start to the season at Monza and Silverstone – where the squad celebrated its maiden Blancpain podium on home soil – a suspension issue cruelly cut short the #44 Vantage’s progress at Paul Ricard. The Oman Racing Team fought back hard during the Total 24 hours of Spa, leading the class during the early stages of the race and looked well on course to secure a second podium before an unfortunate oil leak - picked up after contact from another competitor - dropped the Omani-backed Aston back into seventh.

Oman Racing Team Principal David Bartrum said; “We’ve performed very well this year in the Pro-Am Class. It’s been much better suited to our car and our driver line-up after two years competing against the might of the manufacturer teams.

“We’re sitting 3rd in the Pro-Am Class and can’t go any higher but we can lose this position so this weekend is all about making sure that we secure that 3rd place for the end of the season. Overall I’ve been very pleased with the performance of the Aston this season, it’s competed well against the newer cars and we’ve represented the brand well I feel.

“All three drivers have been excellent as well this season;” continued Bartrum. “Ahmad has really come into his own this season with support and commitment from Jonny, and Devon has come into the team and done a good job for us. The team have been exceptional all year –from the pit-stops, strategy and attitude it’s been a really, really good year.

“The Blancpain Series is head and shoulders above any of the other GT3 series in the World in my opinion and it would be a huge achievement for us to end the season in P3."

Saturday 17th September sees the cars take to the track for the first time for the Bronze test at 09:00 (local time). Free practice follows shortly after at 11:05 before Pre-Qualifying gets underway at 16:15 (local time).

Qualifying for the final long-haul race of the season takes place at 08:30 on Sunday 18th September. With the 3-hour-long race scheduled to commence at 14:45 (local time) 13:45 (UK time).

Live timing of all sessions and the entire 3-hour race can be found at: HERE

24 hour challenge awaits the Oman Racing Team in Spa

24 hour challenge awaits the Oman Racing Team in Spa

Round four of the 2016 Blancpain Endurance Cup sees the Oman Racing Team take on its biggest challenge of the season, the 24 hour race at the sensational Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium this coming weekend (30/31 July).

Arguably the biggest GT3 race in the world, this year marks the 68th Total 24 hours of Spa annual event and highlight of the Blancpain Endurance calendar. Competing for the third consecutive year, the Motorbase-run squad faces a formidable grid of competitors with 65 GT3 cars from the world's leading endurance teams set to descend on the mighty Ardennes track for the twice-round-the-clock contest.

British driver Darren Turner returns to the #44 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 for the blue-riband event alongside fellow Aston Martin factory driver Jonny Adam and regular Blancpain team-mates Ahmad Al Harthy and Devon Modell. Turner already has strong links to the Oman Racing Team as part of the Gulf 12 Hour Race line-up with Al Harthy and Adam that secured pole and a podium during Motorbase’s debut appearance in Abu Dhabi.

By far the biggest race of the year, the Total 24 hours of Spa also offers up bonus championship points at the 6, 12 and 24 hour intervals. Heading into the weekend, The Oman Racing Team currently sits in 5th place in the PRO-AM standings and David Bartrum’s squad heads to the world-famous track in confident mood following a strong start to the season at Monza and Silverstone. Unfortunately a promising race at Paul Ricard was cut short by a suspension issue but pre-race preparations have gone well with the #44 Vantage running faultlessly during the recent test day at the Spa circuit.

“Here we are again at Spa and we hope that it will be third time lucky for the Oman Racing Team! This event is very much unfinished business for us;” said Motorbase Performance Team Principal David Bartrum.

“The Total 24 hours of Spa is a fantastic event within the Blancpain Endurance calendar, the real highlight of the season and to have over 65 cars on the grid is great recognition of that. The quality of drivers and teams that compete here never ceases to amaze me.

“Being the only Aston on the grid, we’re unique and have an important job to do representing the brand;” added Bartrum. “All of the work and preparations are complete and everyone behind the scenes has worked incredibly hard. Adding Darren Turner to our line-up this year alongside Ahmad, Jonny and Devon shows our commitment and desire to do well. We have the strongest line-up and car that we’ve ever had – hopefully that will be enough to get the result we deserve.”

The build-up for the Total 24 hours of Spa begins with a town centre grand parade on Wednesday (July 27) before race preparations get underway on Thursday (July 28) with free practice, qualifying and night qualifying sessions running into the late evening. Friday then plays host to the Super Pole shootout where the top 20 qualifying cars compete ahead of Saturday's 24 hour race (July 30).

Free practice starts at 13:20 local time on Thursday, with qualifying from 20:00 followed by night qualifying at 21:45. The 24-hour race will start at 16:30 on Saturday (July 30). A full timetable of this week's events and build up to the Total 24 hours of Spa can be found on the official championship website.

Live timing of Thursday's qualifying sessions and of the entire 24 hour race can also be found on the official 24 hours of Spa website.

Four drivers in the Oman Racing Spa 24Hr entry

Four drivers in the Oman Racing Spa 24Hr entry

Four drivers now appear on the official entry for the #44 Oman Racing Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 at next weekends Blancpain GT Series headline event - the Spa24hr.

Joining the head of the team Ahmad Al-Harthy will be Endurance Cup regulars Jonny Adam and Devon Modell and for this race only they will now be joined by AMR factory driver Darren Turner.

Unfortunately and like the rest of the Blancpain series this year, the Motorbase prepared car will be the sole AMR chassis within the expected 64 entries and will again compete in the Pro-Am class. The team   will however be hoping for better luck than what they endured at Paul Ricard four weeks ago when a late technical issue robbed them of another decent finish.

A full timetable for the event can be found HERE together with live streaming of the race as it starts at 14:30hrs local on Saturday 30th July.

TF Sport looking to make up for Road to Le Mans disappointment

TF Sport looking to make up for Road to Le Mans disappointment

Also competing at the Red Bull Ring this weekend will be the Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup series competing for what will be their third round of a six round series.

Surrey based TF Sport return with just a single V12 Vantage GT3 entry for Salih Yoluc and Euan Hankey at this round having fielded a second car for Andrew Jarman and Devon Modell at the 'Road to Le Mans' support event at the 24Hr at Le Mans last month.

Having won the opening round at Imola back in May the #34 car was also looking good for a podium finish at the Le Mans event but an unfortunate spin for Euan Hankey whilst battling for third in the final quarter of the race put pay to any fairytale finish.

They do however still hold a single point advantage over the FFFRacing Team by ACM McLaren 650s, the car with whom they were battling with up and until the spin. The third placed #57 AF Corse Ferrari 488 is a further 11points behind.

The team, we're sure will be hoping that their fortune in Europe shall continue into this weekend after their British GT victory at Spa Francorchamps with Jon Barnes and Mark Farmer last weekend.

Free Practice and qualifying will be held over Friday and Saturday morning with their two hour race starting at 17:00Hrs on Saturday.

Oman Racing Team denied 2nd Blancpain podium in Paul Ricard

Oman Racing Team denied 2nd Blancpain podium in Paul Ricard

There was frustration for the Motorbase Performance squad during round three of the Blancpain Endurance Cup when suspension failure cost the Oman Racing Team's Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 a podium finish in the Circuit Paul Ricard 1000km (24/25 June).

The #44 Aston Martin, driven by Ahmad Al Harthy, Jonny Adam and Devon Modell faced a fantastic entry of 57 GT cars for the six-hour night race on the spectacular French circuit. David Bartrum’s squad arrived in the South of France determined to continue its impressive form shown during the opening two rounds of the championship and set on challenging for a second consecutive podium finish. Unfortunately, time lost in the pits due to a failed suspension component meant that the Kent-based outfit ended the race thirteenth in the Pro-Am Cup class, 33rd overall.

The third race meeting of the Blancpain campaign didn’t get off to the best start for the Oman Racing Team with engine issues ruling the #44 Vantage out of most of Friday’s bronze test session. A battling performance during Saturday’s qualifying session saw Jonny Adam net the squad’s best lap, securing a P24 start for the 6-hour evening race.

Al Harthy and Modell completed two strong stints each in the Vantage during the opening four hours of the contest, running as high as 12th overall and 2nd in the Pro-Am class before handing over to Adam for his scheduled double-stint for the final leg of the night race. After a faultless pit-stop and handover by the Motorbase squad, Adam re-joined the race and settled in to continue his challenge on the Pro-Am leaders when disaster struck. With just over two hours remaining on the clock, Adam was forced to nurse the Aston Martin back into the pits with a broken front-left wishbone.

Despite a superb turnaround by the crew and best efforts from the entire team, the time lost proved too costly and the team’s hopes of claiming a podium spot faded with Adam eventually crossing the line in 13th in the Pro-Am class, 33rd overall.

The weekend’s results leave the Oman Racing Team in 5th place in the Pro-Am Team standings with Al Harthy, Adam and Modell currently 4th in the Drivers’ Championship as the Blancpain Endurance Cup prepares for next month’s blue-riband event - the Total 24 hours of Spa. The most famous and renowned GT3 race in the world takes place on the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on 28-31 July. Before then, the Oman Racing Team heads to Spa next Tuesday, 5 July for the official test day ahead of the 24-hour race.

Oman Racing Team aiming high at Ricard 6Hr

Oman Racing Team aiming high at Ricard 6Hr

A spectacular six hour challenge awaits the Oman Racing Team this coming Friday and Saturday as the Kent-based squad heads to the South of France for round 3 of the Blancpain Endurance Cup on the stunning Paul Ricard circuit (June 24/25).

The only six hour contest on the European championship calendar, the 1000km race is also viewed by many as a warm-up to next month’s Total 24 hours of Spa event with the race running into the late evening – finishing at midnight.

Ahmad Al Harthy, Jonny Adam and Devon Modell are back behind the wheel of the #44 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 as the sole representatives of the iconic British marque. The Oman Racing Team trio face formidable competition during the event with over 57 GT3 cars expected to line the grid representing entries from the many of the world's most prestigious marques and teams.

After a strong start to the season that saw the squad celebrate its maiden class podium on home soil last time out at Silverstone, the Oman Racing Team heads to France in confident form with it all still to play for. Currently in second place in the Pro-Am Team and Driver standings, the Oman-backed line-up sits just 3 points off Endurance Cup leaders Black Falcon.

“Paul Ricard is one of my all-time favourite places to go and visit;” commented Team Principal David Bartrum. “I love the place. It’s a fantastic facility and a circuit that’s unrivalled in this Championship.

“Ahmad, Jonny and Devon have done a sterling job so far this season, getting a fourth place in Monza and then following up with our first Blancpain podium at Silverstone was very special for the team so we’re heading to France looking for more of the same.

“It’s going to be very tough with almost 60 cars on the grid;” continued Bartrum. “Being a six hour race the team will need to be absolutely on it for the pit stops especially with us racing into the night and with the changing light conditions.”

“The next two events are massively important to us and our championship aspirations;” added the Team Boss. “With so many points at stake we need to stay in the fight and we need to get these next two events right. The drivers are definitely up for it and so are the team.”

Friday’s track action gets underway with the Bronze Test at 10:00 local time; followed by free practice and pre-qualifying sessions at 14:10 and 17:05. Qualifying for the six hour contest runs from 09:45 – 10:45 on Saturday morning with the race scheduled to commence at 18:00.Live streaming of Saturday's qualifying sessions and full race will be available online via the official Blancpain Endurance Series website: http://www.blancpain-gt-series.com/live with additional live coverage on MotorsTV from 16:30.

Road to Le Mans top six finishes for TF Sport

Road to Le Mans top six finishes for TF Sport

TF Sport made the best of what was a closely-fought Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup ‘Road to Le Mans’ race on Saturday (18 June), bringing its pair of Aston Martin V12 Vantages home inside the top six.

The new-for-2016 GT3 Le Mans Cup kicked off at the historic and evocative Imola circuit last month, but the championship’s second round was held on the illustrious support bill for what is universally regarded as the world’s greatest race – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It would be TF Sport’s first experience of the Le Mans racetrack and clean, uninterrupted free practice and qualifying sessions were needed, but changeable conditions, slow zones and red flag stoppages all conspired against the British team.

In the ‘Road to Le Mans’ itself, Salih Yoluc took the first stint in the #43 entry ahead of the mandatory two-minute pit stop and driver-change, making up ground from the outset to run in a fine fifth position in the GT3 class before handing over to Euan Hankey.

Hankey, who had been unable to complete a timed lap before the race, lost two places because a green flag wasn't shown at the end of a slow zone, before surviving a spin that occurred while lapping an LMP3 back marker, but the Briton was still able to make gains and took fourth position in the final laps.

Over in the sister #22 Aston Martin, Andrew Jarman took the first stint, running in a solid sixth position, but a pit lane speed ingrigement would result in a ten-second stop-go penalty during teammate Devon Modell's stint.

The Kent racer took over, keeping pace with the field in eighth before progressing back up to sixth with a spectacular passing move on two cars on the Mulsanne Straight to take the chequered flag in sixth and round out a solid, if not slightly underwhelming day for TF Sport at Le Mans.

“I was pleased to pass two cars at once at the first chicane on the Mulsanne Straight and to set the second fastest lap, especially as there was a lot more pace to come,” said Modell. “I was still finding the braking points at the end of the race, which was a steep learning experience. It was good fun to drive Circuit de la Sarthe, but I was aiming for a podium – everybody wants to be on the Le Mans podium.”

Jarman added: “Finishing sixth from 11th on the grid; we’ll take that. Devon (Modell) drove really well and I can’t really complain about the result, because I have spent the week dusting off the cobwebs for what was my first race in seven months. It was a shame to receive the ten-second stop-go penalty and, if it was me who sped in the pits, I have to hold my hands up and apologise to the TF Sport team. The whole experience of racing on the Le Mans 24 Hours package is fantastic, but, while the result is good, you always want more.”

While fourth and sixth position were a solid result, TF Sport Director, Tom Ferrier was left wanting for more, saying: “The Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup ‘Road to Le Mans’ was another one that got away, much like last weekend’s Silverstone 500. Ultimately, I would have been happy to have finished fourth and sixth when we arrived in Le Mans, but we had a chance to beat our chief championship rival.

“It has been a strange week, with short, stop-start sessions, but the 24 Hours of Le Mans is a superb event and being on the support bill is an honour. It certainly whets the appetite and to have an entry in Le Mans itself would be unbelievable.”

TF Sport prepare for GT Open at Paul Ricard

TF Sport prepare for GT Open at Paul Ricard

Todays first Free Practice session of the third round of the International GT Open series at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France saw TF Sport run two Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3's by each of their drivers Salih Yoluc and Euan Hankey.

It transpires that the running of the #8 car was simply a shakedown test from Euan Hankey in preparation for that cars next outing at the Road to Le Mans, the non championship round of the GT3 Le Mans Cup championship at the Le Mans 24 in two weeks time.

2014 British GT GT4 champions Andrew Jarman and Devon Modell are due to drive that sveltely liveried blue and grey at not just Le Mans but also at the remaining rounds of the GT3 Le Mans Cup.

Back in their normal #34 car Yoluc managed an incredible third overall in FP1 by himself with the duo coming back together in FP2 where they also managed to finish in P3 overall, each time beaten by the mightily fast AF Corse Ferrari 488 GT3.

Speaking with team boss Tom Ferrier at the British GT at Pulton Park last weekend, he believed that despite impressive free practice times the #34 would again be hampered in top end performance against that of their rivals like they were last time out at Spa.

Qualifying for Race 1 starts at 11.05Hrs local ready for the 70minute race itself which starts at  16.15Hrs local before they do it all again on Sunday with Race 2.

Jarman and Modell back at TF Sport for Road to Le Mans

Jarman and Modell back at TF Sport for Road to Le Mans

TF Sport welcomes Devon Modell and Andrew Jarman back to the fold as it attempts to bolster its assault on the Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup’s ‘Road to Le Mans’ race, which boasts a coveted spot on the support bill for the 24 Hours of Le Mans at Circuit de la Sarthe (18-19 June).

The GT3 Le Mans Cup, which is organised by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest in conjunction with Le Mans Endurance Management, is purely for GT3-spec cars and centred around the ‘gentleman’ driver.

A small, but perfectly formed 11-car entry turned out for the series’ curtain-raiser at Imola last month and TF Sport could be found at the head of the field, locked in a fascinating fight for victory.

The on-track action was utterly enthralling and flawless driving from both Salih Yoluc and Euan Hankey saw TF Sport make history by winning the first ever GT3 Le Mans Cup race, but next up is the ‘Road to Le Mans’ and the British team is pulling out all the stops to maximise its chances of taking glory in support of what is widely regarded as the world’s greatest motor race – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

No fewer than 17 driver pairings will compete for teams from China, France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Italy and the Netherlands, and nine manufacturers – Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche – will be represented on a diverse grid that will also feature a 22-strong LMP3 entry from the ACO series.

Heightened opposition from an entry that totals 39 cars has prompted TF Sport to double-up its efforts with a second Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 for Modell and Jarman, who reunite for the first time since narrowly missing out on the British GT4 title in 2014.

The former teammates won on TF Sport’s maiden competitive outing and continued notching up successes, and their combined experience with Aston Martin machinery and Modell’s status as an Aston Martin Evolution Academy recruit inspires confidence that they can deliver on their return at Circuit de la Sarthe.

The one-hour race will be held on Saturday 18 June as a precursor to the 2016 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which last year attracted an audience of more than 30million television viewers and 630,000-plus trackside spectators.

As a result, a victory in the GT3 Le Mans Cup’s ‘Road to Le Mans’ race would hold more cachet than all of the others combined, and, with a strong driver line-up, proven machinery and the Imola win to its name, TF Sport will go to the legendary Circuit de la Sarthe in France’s Loire Valley as one of the favourites.

“It’s a real pleasure to be reuniting with TF Sport and Andrew (Jarman), and it’s particularly special that it’s happening in support of the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” said Modell. “It’s every driver’s dream to race at Circuit de la Sarthe and this will serve as a real opportunity to cut my teeth on the track and get a taste of what racing in the 24 Hours is like. As a member of the Aston Martin Evolution Academy, I have knowledge of the V12 Vantage and I’m sure I can apply all of my GT3 experience to achieve a great result for TF Sport, which has already achieved success in the Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup.”

Jarman added: “I’m definitely looking forward to racing in the Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup at Circuit de la Sarthe, as I know TF Sport and Devon (Modell) well, and I think the publicity, exposure and the quality of the series is very good. I’ve managed to race on the Le Mans support bill two years in a row and the plan is to pick up from where I left off with TF Sport in last year’s British GT Championship. It’s definitely the team to be with in the GT3 Le Mans Cup and hopefully we’ll be quite competitive from the off.”

TF Sport Director, Tom Ferrier, said: “It’s nice to be going to Le Mans and I hope it’s the first trip of many for TF Sport. Having Devon Modell and Andrew Jarman together is great, as they proved to be a very strong pairing with us in 2014 when they took the British GT4 Championship battle right down to the wire. They both took different paths in GT racing, Andrew remaining with us and achieving a few poles and podiums in 2015, and Devon getting podiums, race wins and a championship title elsewhere.

“In Devon and Andrew and Salih (Yoluc) and Euan (Hankey) we have two very different pairings, but they’re both very capable. The Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup’s ‘Road to Le Mans’ would be a lovely race to win, but a good, strong result is all Salih and Euan need as the championship leaders. Devon and Andrew aren’t title contenders and can therefore take more risks, but they will help TF Sport’s bid by providing a second set of data.

Andrew Jarman joins GT3 Le Mans Cup at Road to Le Mans support event

Andrew Jarman joins GT3 Le Mans Cup at Road to Le Mans support event

Milton Keynes racer Andrew Jarman is set to make his GT3 racing return when he rejoins TF Sport for Round 2 of the new 2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup. Jarman makes his return at the world famous Circuit de la Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend in June.

Making his Le Mans return after a podium finish at last year’s Aston Martin Festival race driving for Japanese team Alpha Classics Racing, Jarman will make his GT3 Le Mans Cup debut with round one winners TF Sport. Competing in the British team’s Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 he reforms a successful partnership that has secured multiple wins and pole positions over the last two season’s of British GT.

Driving alongside 2014 British GT4 team-mate Devon Modell, Jarman is confident of a strong return to racing despite an extended winter break.

“Its great to be back in a GT3 car and to do it at Le Mans with the TF Sport team is going to be an amazing experience, said Jarman. “After a strong end to British GT last year I wanted to keep pushing towards the goal of entering the Le Mans 24 Hour in the future and the GT3 Le Mans Cup is such a fantastic new series I had to be part of it.

No doubt it will be very tough straight out the box but I know the circuit from last year’s Festival race and obviously know the team very. TF Sport has already had an amazing start to the year winning at round one with Salih [Yoluc] and Euan [Hankey]. It will be great to drive alongside Devon again after we narrowly missed out on the British GT title in 2014 so the ingredients are there for a good result, let’s wait and see!”

Blancpain joy for Oman Racing at Silverstone

Blancpain joy for Oman Racing at Silverstone

The Oman Racing Team celebrated its maiden Blancpain Endurance Cup Pro-Am podium finish on home soil this weekend with an excellent comeback performance during Sunday’s action-packed three hour contest on the Silverstone GP circuit. (May 15).
The #44 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, piloted by Ahmad Al Harthy, Devon Modell and Jonny Adam finished 2nd in class narrowly missing out on the top spot after an epic last lap dash to claim the Kent-based squad’s first ever podium finish in the Blancpain Endurance Series. The weekend’s strong results also see the Oman-backed squad move into second place in the Team and Driver standings – a mere three points off the Pro-Am Championship lead.
“I think this weekend was right up there as one of my most enjoyable GT races” commented David Bartrum, Oman Racing Team Principal. “It was a fantastic feeling for the team and the drivers, everyone did a great job. It was great to have so many Omani supporters with us in the garage and to have them supporting Ahmad and the team just added to the atmosphere of the occasion.”

“Getting our first ever Blancpain podium at our home circuit was just brilliant;” Bartrum added. “I think the whole team and the drivers deserved it and we can build from the first two rounds this year. Going forward we’re showing the strength of the team and the drivers and we’re really enjoying our racing.”
After posting competitive times during Saturday’s free practice and pre-qualifying sessions, the Oman Racing Team squad’s hopes of a strong qualifying position looked dismal when a wheel nut failure caused the right rear wheel to come off during Modell’s qualifying run. A swift turnaround by the Motorbase-crew saw Al Harthy set a timed lap in Q2 before handing over to Adam who delivered a class performance in the #44 Vantage to secure 3rd in the Pro-Am class and 10th overall for the afternoon’s three hour race.
Modell took the opening stint racing against many of the best drivers on the grid and the 25-year-old did well to maintain 3rd in class during the opening laps despite dropping back into 18th overall. Pitting early on in the window, Modell handed the Vantage over to Al Harthy just before the hour mark. A hold up in the pit lane unfortunately saw the #44 slip back into 5th in class, 23rd overall but the Omani immediately set to work moving up through the field and back into podium contention reclaiming 3rd in class by lap 36.
With debris on track the safety car was deployed just before the halfway mark and Al Harthy closed the gap on the second placed Pro-Am #34 Ferrari, running in 18th overall before heading into the pits for the final handover to Adam. A perfectly executed pit stop saw Adam re-join 3rd in class, P20 overall with just over an hour remaining on the clock where he quickly moved past the Ferrari to take 2nd in class. A second extended full course yellow safety car period with just 40 minutes left to run bunched the field up and when the race restarted almost 20 minutes later Adam was in the midst of a nail-biting battle between the leading three Pro-Am cars as the race approached its closing laps.

Trading places with the #56 Mercedes and #74 Audi in the final 10 minutes, the trio raced side by side as they battled hard for Pro-Am honours. Despite struggling with power steering issues, Adam saved the best until last and pulled off an ambitious move from 3rd on the final lap to snatch 2nd in class and 18th place overall for the Oman Racing Team.

Last minute GT3 Le Mans Cup testing for TF Sport

Last minute GT3 Le Mans Cup testing for TF Sport

Continuing to share the hospitality extended to them by Solaris Motorsport, UK based team TF Sport today shared a test session with the Italian GT squad at Imola as each prepared for the next race at the Italian circuit later this month.

Last time out in the International GT Open series opener at Estoril, the bright blue and yellow liveried car received significant front end damage in qualifying after Salih Yoluc placed a wheel onto some wet grass spearing the car off into the armco.

After utilising the facilities extended to them by TeamAMR's latest Partner Team in to complete the required repairs TF Sport have today embarked on the first of an expected two day test at Imola all in preparation for the opening race of the new Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup series that kicks off there next weekend alongside the European Le Mans Series.

With the TF Sport transporter still not having returned to base since the GT Open race nearly two weeks ago they still had the two V12 Vantage GT3's on board that the team will use in the new ACO sanctioned series. The second, grey coloured car will be used by team returnees Andrew Jarman and Devon Modell from about the third race of the series - the Salih Yoluc / Euan Hankey car is a full season entry.

Solaris Motorsport meantime will return to Imola for the second round of the Italian GT championship at the end of May having had an eventful yet relatively successful opening round of the series at nearby Monza.

Fourth is no consolation for Oman Racing after outstanding race weekend

Fourth is no consolation for Oman Racing after outstanding race weekend

Having decided to return to only the SRO's Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup over and above a joint full season entry again with the series sister British GT championship in 2016, Oman Racing arrived at Monza for the series opener last weekend with the potential to surprise.

Still driving a Motorbase prepared Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 (presumably now elevated to 2016 specification) the new for 2016 driver line up of Ahmad Al Harthy, Jonny Adam and Devon Modell would also be competing within the Pro-Am Cup, a drop down from the Pro Cup category of the previous two years.

The #44 car would unfortunately also be the sole AMR full season entry for the marque in 2016.

Qualifying P13 overall out of a colossal grid of 57 cars the #44 Oman Racing car would be started by Al Harthy for the opening stint of around an hour, followed by Modell and then Adam to the flag. With the customary rolling start the extent of the grid was such as some cars were not even on the start straight by the time the lights turned to green but as the majority thundered down to the tight Variante Del Rettifilo the prospect of race ending damage was still ever present.

Fortunately, Al Harthy and indeed most of the other cars managed to jockey themselves relatively unscathed around the right then left hander to start the three hour race in earnest. Al Harthy very quickly settled down to his own driving pattern and race strategy and within only 20minutes had climbed the leader board to P9 overall (P3 in class) but genuinely holding track position through pace and line over Pro drivers in much newer machinery. A superb drive.

At the top of the first hour he handed the car over to Modell from a very impressive fifth on track and leading the Pro-Am class as the then leading Black Pearl Racing Ferrari having already pitted. Despite the young Brit having competed in Blancpain last year in a BMW Z4 this would be his first racing experience of the AMR Vantage and only his second completive race of 2016 (Dubai 24H in a GT4 Vantage) so would ave been out to impress!

And that he would, battling with the ebb and flow of the race together with numerous yellow flag incidents Modell would complete his hour stint fourteenth overall but more importantly holding P3 in class - the chase to the flag would be then down to AMR factory driver Jonny Adam.

With only about half the remaining field being in a competitive position on track (remainder being multiple laps down relatively speaking) Adam just had to chase down the #66 Ferrari for position in class but he lost a number of laps (and time) by being held up by two ever so slightly fastest Audi R8's squabbling over P12/13 in Pro class. The similarities in performance between the two chassis meant that only a banzai (possibly race ending) manoeuvre would have allowed him to pass these two cars sooner than he did.

Entering the final eighteen minutes of the race 'things were looking good' for a podium finish for the #44 car - well it was before pseudo Ferrari factory driver Giancarlo Fisichella came along out of nowhere in his brand new #53 488 GT3 quickly taking Adam for position. Despite all valiant efforts the #44 car was unable to make up the time difference between it and the #66 Black Pearl Racing Ferrari just ahead of it and would finish thirteenth overall and P4 in class - the #53 car was fast enough to catch and pass the #66 car in the final quarter to claim second in Pro-Am!!

The series opener was a great display for the series - gone were many of the idiotic manoeuvres that previously eliminated cars at almost every corner. Al Harthy clearly drove the race of his life yesterday and it was a shame that his efforts could not have been reward with a podium.

The series now moves onto to Silverstone at the beginning of May where the power characteristics of the V12 Vantage may again prove competitive against it newer iteration adversaries.

New class challenge for the Oman Racing at Blancpain opener at Monza

New class challenge for the Oman Racing at Blancpain opener at Monza

The Oman Racing Team heads to Monza's world-famous Autodromo Nazionale circuit this week in preparation for the opening round of the 2016 Blancpain Endurance Series (April 23/24).

Sunday's three hour opening race looks set to deliver an impressive spectacle with 57 cars from the world's most prestigious marques predicted to line up on the grid. Moving to the Pro-Am Class for its third consecutive campaign in the series, the Motorbase-powered squad faces fierce competition from 22 rivals on the iconic Italian track.

“Monza’s always a fantastic place to visit;” said Team Principal David Bartrum. “It has a fantastic history of great racing and we’re all looking forward to heading back for our third time there in the Blancpain. We’re coming back this year in the Pro-Am class where I think we should have been all along. It’s a fiercely competitive series and not one that you can learn easily but I think with this year’s line-up we have a genuine chance of doing well.”

The Oman Racing Team line up has been bolstered for the 2016 season with new signing and reigning 24H Series SP3 class champion Devon Modell joining Aston Martin works driver Jonny Adam and Omani driver Ahmad Al Harthy, who returns for his third year in the #44 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3.

“It’s great to have Jonny back in the team and obviously thanks to Ahmad first and foremost for putting his faith back in the team to fly the flag for Oman again this season;” continued Bartrum. “It’s such a great honour.

“Jonny brings so much to the team with his experience with Aston Martin and his capabilities both in the car and how he works with within the team. Now this year adding Devon Modell as a young, fast peddler as a bronze alongside Ahmad I have to say this is one of the best driver line-ups we could have hoped for. I’m hoping that this is our year to shine. We had some high and lowlights last year and I’d like to see more highlights!”

Saturday (April 23) sees the #44 Oman Racing Team Vantage take to the track for first time for free practice and pre-qualifying sessions. Qualifying for Sunday's (April 24) three hour race commences at 09.00 local time (8.00 UK time) before the first race of the 2016 Blancpain Endurance Series season which is scheduled for 15.00 local time (14.00 UK time).

Driver Quotes:

Jonny Adam:
“It’s nice to be back for a 2nd year with Motorbase and Ahmad. Preparation has gone really well and we’re all looking forward to getting back out on track. We’re the only Aston Martin on the grid which could be a good thing as there’s a lot of new machinery out there so consistency could be our key this year.

“Monza isn’t the greatest of circuits for the car but we had good race pace there last year and moving to a new class this year I think we’ve got a good chance of netting a decent result if we can manage to stay out of trouble. Hopefully we can represent Aston Martin and Oman well this weekend and get our campaign off to a good start. “

Ahmad Al Harthy:
“It’s fantastic we’re only a few days away from the first round at Monza, I really can’t wait. Every year you think Blancpain can’t get any stronger, any bigger, but it does and when you look at the entry list for this season it looks like it should be the most competitive championship yet.

“Everyone at the team is so determined to make the best start we can to the new season, it’s going to be great working with Jonny and Devon and we’re all looking forward to the weekend. It’s too early to know where we stand, so we’re not making any predictions, but we’ll aim to do the very best we can and be as competitive as possible.”

Devon Modell:
“I really cannot wait to get away to Monza. It really does feel like we’ve had to wait a long time for the start of the 2016 Blancpain Endurance Series, as practically every other championship has already begun. Nevertheless, I have done some testing with Motorbase Performance in Portugal, at Silverstone and the official Media Days at Circuit Paul Ricard, and the Aston Martin feels very strong.

“A lot of teams will have kept their cards close to their chests and we don’t have much to compare our pace to as the only Aston Martin entered in the championship this year. There is variety with the cars and driver line-ups and I think we simply need to stay out of trouble, particularly on the opening lap, and bag as many points as possible before setting our long term ambitions.”

Inaugural GT3 Le Mans Cup test concludes

Inaugural GT3 Le Mans Cup test concludes

The first official test of the new ACO sanctioned Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup series concluded today at the Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France with just a handful entries out of the expected 'many' taking part.

As announced several weeks ago British based TF Sport will be at least one team flying the AMR flag for the brand when the full entry list is finally made publicly available just two weeks prior the series first event at Imola in mid May. This is despite the closing date to new entries being just last week.

The test, apart for the obvious to the teams seems to have been an opportunity for the series organisers to obtain marketing material and promotional videos for the new series with at least some of their confirmed participants.

We have found out today that TF Sport already have one confirmed full season entry for their existing Salih Yoluc and Eaun Hankey lineup (who were testing in France over the weekend) but also have a potential of entering a part season entry for another GT3 Vantage for their former British GT GT4 drive line up of Andrew Jarman and Devon Modell (subject to official confirmation by the team and series).

Those with clear vision will have seen the now customer blue with yellow neon line  of the Yolic/Hankey ES Motors sponsored car but the test also produced footage of a grey and yellow neon line car as well!!

Whilst many details regarding the series are still sketchy the series organisers have confirmed that all races will be streamed live through their new website www.gt3lemanscup.com.

Some of the video shot at the test can be viewed HERE and HERE

Lonesome Vantage in Blancpain

Lonesome Vantage in Blancpain

This weeks Blancpain GT Series official test at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France saw the unfortunate realisation that Europe's premier GT sprint and endurance series will only have a solitary full season Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 competing within their midst in 2016.

With Leonard Motorsport having already abandoned the British brand in favour of the all new Audi R8 platform for 2016 it will be down to Motorbase prepared Oman Racing and their #44 blue and white car to battle for brand honour amongst a very, very strong field (subject to official confirmation by the team).

Piloted this year by Ahmad Al Harthy and Jonny Adam again they will be joined by one of last years Aston Martin Racing Evolution Academy finalist Devon Modell. Despite his younger years, Modell is by no means inexperienced in the GT field having finished as GT4 Vice Champion in the 2014 British GT championship, winning the SP3 championship in Creventic's 24H Series last year together with a competitive Blancpain season sat year in Barwell's Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4 GT3.

The Oman car will compete this year in the Endurance Series but racing in the Pro Am Cup class. The team will however be looking to run a second car at the series flagship event at the Spa24 and at their 'local' Sprint Cup event at Brands Hatch.
