Single AMR GT4 at VLN

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Having taken the world stage by storm with a debuting SP8T class win at the ADAC Total 24N event the weekend after Le Mans 24 earlier this year, one of the AMR Performance Centre's Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 returns to the scene at this weekends round of the VLN Series.

This weekend sees just a single AMR car entered into the halfway stage of the German VLN Series around the infamous and notorious Green Hell circuit that is the Nordschleife with two very well established Aston Martin runners in the form of Marc Muller supporting American businessman and gentleman driver David Thilenius aboard the #158 SP8T class AMR Vantage GT4.

Having competed together in this years N24 aboard the outgoing Aston Martin Vantage GT8, they and co drivers Tony Richards and Heinz Jurgen Kroner sadly failed to finish the race in the normally aspirated former N24 class winning car.

We hope that this revisit will be slightly more 'profitable' for them!

Looking forward at British GT at Brands Hatch

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

After the thrills and spills of Spa Francorchamps the week before last comes this weekend's penultimate round of the 2019 British GT Championship around the full Grand Prix circuit of Brands Hatch in Kent.

For a quarter of the Aston Martin Racing customer team contingent, Spa was a silverware winning success with Optimum Motorsport's Ollie Wilkinson and Bradley Ellis taking a convincing lights to flag overall win in their AMR Vantage GT3 which was backed up over in the GT4 class with the top and third placed steps of that podium being occupied by the two TF Sport AMR Vantage GT4's of Tom Canning/Ashley Hand and Patrick Kibble/Josh Price respectively.

For many of the usual AMR runners, last weekend also included their participation in the Blancpain GT's 24 Hours of Spa where TF Sport came away with a Pro-Am overall win in the car that Jonny Adam and Graham Davidson normally race in British GT. For those two individuals, Spa was extremely painful in two ways as Adam's Garage 59 AMR was forced into early retirement with mechanical issues whilst Davidson ended up in the local hospital following an accident in the Lamborghini that he was sharing. Thankfully, Davidson has already confirmed that he will be fully fit to race again at Brands Hatch after observation and treatment to his elbow following a side on impact with the crash barrier at Spa.

As for their Vantage GT3, the short travelling distance between Spa to base and then base to Brands Hatch will give TF Sport sufficient time to re-fettle the car back into its BGT guise from the Oman Racing colours it was called up to race in last weekend. Nicki Thiim should be 'full of beans' after his part in the teams class win at Spa!!!

Also being busy before the event has been the Academy Motorsport team who have needed to re-shell their #61 car that Micah Stanley and Ben Hurst race in the Championship after the car suffered extensive front end damage in the previous GT4 European race at Zandvoort after a recklessly instigated crash took out six other cars even before the cars had passed the start line on the opening lap for that series driver Fiona James. For Spa, team boss Matt Nicol Jones moved mountains to allow both Stanley and Hurst to race in a borrowed McLaren 570s GT4 but that duo suffered the misfortune of yet another DNF.

Beechdean AMR are back in the news again for this weekend after having skipped the Spa round of the Championship due to their commitments in the Michelin Le Mans Cup down in Barcelona last weekend. We had hoped that the speed merchant Marco Sorensen would be back in the hot seat of the #99 car alongside Andrew Howard having missed also missed the previous round at Donington Park in late June following his heavy accident at Le Mans in the AMR factory GTE.

Despite the Dane testing for the factory at Barcelona only last week (for reasons soon to be made clear) Sorensen will again miss this round for his place to be taken by former Prosport Performance ADAC GT Masters drive Valentin Hasse Clot.

In terms of Championships stakes - some classes could be determined this weekend whilst the remainder will go on to continue the hashtag #DoningtonDecider for yet another year, all clearly demonstrating just how competitive and open this GT Championship remains.

Ahead the head in GT3 Silver Cup and third overall in GT3 is the #96 Optimum crew of Wilkinson and Ellis now just 16 points behind the Championship leading Lamborghini with the TF Sport crew of Adam and Davidson just behind the #96 P4 overall and P3 in GT3 Pro-Am. In GT4, Canning and Hand moved themselves up to P3 in the overall GT4 stakes nw just 7.5 points behind the leaders whilst they now take the Championship lead in the GT4 Silver Cup from the Multimatic Ford.

In GT4 Pro-Am, a technical issue at Spa cost the #11 Beechdean AMR GT4 crew of Martin Plowman and Kelvin Fletcher some additional points that now sees their class lead now cut to just half a point with the two rounds remaining.

For the others, Brands Hatch will become a question of boosting pride and potential for a return to the series next year rather than Championship standings. Certainly, the twisting and turning characteristics of the Brands circuit will help for some more nose to tail racing with plenty of incident and action (hopefully not accident) as each of the #96, #95 and #97 cars get hit with success pit penalties in the midst of Sundays 2 hour race.

Looking forward to it!!

A podium defining solo act from Matt George at Spa

Tuesday, July 30, 2019

Racing at Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium in support of the Total Spa 24H last weekend was the French FFSA GT4 Championship holding their fourth round out of six in their 2019 calendar.

Competing amongst that thirty eight car field was the #44 David Appleby Engineering prepared Generation AMR SuperRacing Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 with Matt George behind the wheel.

Normally competing in the GT4 European Series alongside James Holder, this is the first time one of the new iteration of turbo charged Vantage GT4's has competed within the French National GT series and what an impact George made.

Having raced around the infamous 7km Belgium circuit the weekend before in the teams Jaguar GT4 as part of the British GT Championship, George Qualified their plain black #44 car in P2 and P4 respectively for each of the two one hour races over the weekend. Despite having to endure an additional 20 second of pit stop penalty for being a lone driver, George converted these front end starting positions to complete each race in P3 overall.

Considering the high air and track temperatures of Fridays race and the cooler wet conditions of Saturdays race and as a lone driver - that is a fantastic achievement.

Silverstone Classic notes

Monday, July 29, 2019

It could be considered something of a disappointment that just five Aston Martin Racing cars entered this years Aston Martin Trophy for Masters Endurance Legends event that ran this year as part of the four day Silverstone Classic event?

Whilst the two races did attract the iconic Lola Aston Martin DBR1-2 of fully Masters Series racer Christophe D'Ansembourg again, a single Vantage GT2 and GT3 apiece together with a brace of Vantage GT4's in support, is hard to see how these cars detracted from the showcase that was the same event last year that featured a whole plethora of AMR vehicles across the ages.

None the less and credit where credit is due, without the likes of people like D'Ansembourg and Alex Lienau who bring there rolling stock over and racing it then we would have nothing to feast our eyes upon at these kind of events so that is always something to be applauded.

In the overall stakes, there was no return to a overall race win for the Lola DBR1-2 in the race this year although D'Ansembourg did claim a P3 podium in race 1 after finishing ten seconds behind the race winning Pescarolo LMP1 car whilst Lieau and BRDC Chairman John Grant finished the next highest of the AMR runners - 14th overall and 2nd in the INV class in their former Miedecke Motorsport V12 Vantage GT3 on Saturday.

These would be their highest positions of the weekend after Sundays race where no AMR runner finished higher than P11 overall but sometimes the reward is just racing these beauties very fast with other like minded people!

Testing times in Belgium pays off for a few at the Spa 24

Monday, July 29, 2019

The seventy first running of the Spa 24 Hour at the weekend again never failed to disappoint in terms of the racing spectacle that seventy odd current specification GT3 race cars thundering around the seven kilometre circuit would always create, although there was of course always disappointment for some whenever the track decided to snap back.

Seventy one years since the last outright win by an Aston Martin at the event, this years six car entry of the new generation Aston Martin Racing V8 Turbo Vantage GT3 was the biggest from the marque in recent years and would hopefully give all the three full Pro car entries their best chance yet. As well as these cars there were entries into the remaining Pro-Am, Silver Cup and Am classes so all bases were covered.

After the customary trip down to Spa Francorchamps town for the car and drivers parade, things on track didn't exactly get off to a good start for the #97 Oman Racing with TF Sport team in Pro-Am after Salih Yoluc suffered a sizeable front end accident in Free Practice that would otherwise write off their car. Thanks to the team also having already raced at the circuit on the previous weekend in the latest round of the British GT Championship, they at least retained a spare chassis at the track which they quickly changed over in time for that to be ready for Qualifying.

By the time the Qualifying process had panned out on Thursday and Friday, there would be top twenty starting positions for all three Pro cars plus either P3 or P4 starts in the Silver Cup, Pro-Am and Am classes. For the #97 Oman Racing car, that would convert into a pit lane start due to their chassis change after the commencement of officially timed track activities.

Race morning on Saturday also heralded the expected change in meteorological conditions at the circuit with the intense 40 deg C sunshine of Tuesday and Wednesday being replaced with persistent rainfall and much cooler air and track temperatures.

With the race starting behind the Safety Car, one of the first cars to fall was unfortunately the leading AMR Pro car of Jonny Adam in the #59 Garage 59 car that he shared with Come Ledogar and Andrew Watson. A seized from hub was the problem and despite the best of efforts from the crew time was ultimately called on that car still inside the first hour of racing and for the second race this year, two of their drivers would see no actual race mileage.

Throughout the constant stream of Full Course Yellow and other race control and intervention that followed as the race attested to gain momentum, the #59 car was soon followed by the (eventual) confirmed retirements of both the #62 Pro car from and #762 Silver Cup entries from R-Motorsport. The #62 suffered from race ending accident damage to the rear after Matt Parry spun out at Stavelot whilst the #762 suffered from similar effects after an accident induced by others. Three cars out even before nightfall - that would normally have been considered as something of a disaster had it not have been for the remaining three cars then having a race of the lives with the #76 in the top 10 overall and both the #97 and #188 leading their respective Pro-Am and Am classes respectively.

The ever changing track conditions made for some difficult strategy calls as first a dry line appeared with slicks being the tyre of choice) quickly followed with more rain and full wets again required as night fell and the track lit up with another magnificent firework display.

At the 1/3rd distance - the #76 R-Motorpsort car was up to P5 with Alex Lynn cycling through the three man line up of himself, Jake Dennis and Marvin Kirchhofer whilst Nicki Thiim, then aboard the #97 car had moved up to P17 overall with the car that started from the pit lane. The #188 Garage 59 Am class car of Chris Harris was sitting comfortably for the conditions in P2 with their battle with Barwell just ahead after great work from Alex West, Ross Gunn and Chris Goodwin.

Then, after fourteen hours of racing under almost a constant stream of rain, FCY's and Safety Car periods to clean up various smashes around the circuit during the early hours of Sunday morning, the race was finally red flagged by Race Control due to the existing and forecasted weather conditions that were then swamping the circuit. Lessons learned from previous years coming into force and there didn't appear to be too many voices of discontent with that decision.

With cars now returned to the pits and garages under Parc Ferme conditions, that gave time for many to catch some sleep and barrier repairs to be made with the race not expected to resume much before midday local time.

With the race left down to a three to hour hour sprint to the flag the only AMR's left in contention for a prize was the #97 Oman Racing car and the #188 Garage 59 car after the #76 R-Motorpsort car had lost large amounts of time during the night with an incorrectly fitted tyre and wheel. The car was still in the race but too far behind to have time to made amends.

Late disappointment however came to the #188 Garage 59 car after Goodwin was collected from the rear by another car damaging the Aston's rear suspension. Despite getting the car home and repaired, that lost time would lose them their hold on a class podium although it did credit Harris with his first ever Spa 24 race finish.

That left the #97 Oman Racing with TF Sport AMR Vantage to fly the flag for the marque as AMR factory driver Nicki Thiim nursed a two lap lead to take the Pro-Am class win at the chequered flag in something of a very bedraggled and battle scared race car.

In addition to the race win, the points haul earned by Yoluc, Charlie Eastwood and Ahmad Al Harthy at the 6,12 and 24hour marks elevates them into the overall class lead in the Championship with just the final round of the season at Barcelona outstanding.

Whilst it may not have been the overall race win that had been yearned for, a class win at the toughest GT3 race in the world is nothing to be sniffed at. For Garage 59 and R-Motorsport, they both have the depth and ability to pick themselves up from their hardships in Belgium to race again another day.

For others however, their next race is just this weekend at Brands Hatch for the penultimate round of the British GT Championship.

2019 busy busy busy still ...................!!!

TF Sport claim class win at ‘eventful’ Spa 24

Sunday, July 28, 2019

Aston Martin has claimed victory in the Pro-Am class of a rain-interrupted 2019 TOTAL 24 Hours of Spa, after a brilliant performance by partner team TF Sport Racing with Oman with the new Vantage GT3. It was the maiden win in a 24-hour race for Aston Martin Racing's new customer-focussed machine and also the first for the British sportscar marque since the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup event became a GT3-only competition.

TF Sport's triumph was made all the more remarkable given the team started from the pitlane, following Salih Yoluc's huge practice accident at Raidillon, which forced it to rebuild and use a regular British GT Championship chassis for the race. The driver crew, including Aston Martin Racing works driver Nicki Thiim (DEN), Ahmad Al Harthy (UAE) Yoluc (TUR) and Charlie Eastwood (IRL), recovered 50 positions to finish 22nd overall, a lap clear of its nearest class rival. For Thiim it was also a personal landmark; this was his third major 24-race class win, adding to his 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours GTE Am victory and his 2017 Nürburgring 24 Hours SP8 class win.

Three of Aston Martin's partner teams, Garage 59, TF Sport and R-Motorsport entered six Vantage GT3s in an event afflicted by a high attrition rate and heavy rain that persisted almost throughout. The race was even temporarily halted for nearly six hours in the early morning when conditions were deemed too dangerous to continue.

R-Motorsport proved strong contenders with both its Pro cars. The #62 ran competitively in the top ten in the hands of works driver and local hero Maxime Martin (BEL) early on, while the #76 emerged as a contender for victory with Alex Lynn (GB) until a mismatched tyre set cost the team its front-running position before the race was stopped. The car Lynn shared with Marvin Kirchhöfer (GER) and Jake Dennis (GB) eventually finished 19th.

The third Aston Martin to take the chequered flag was Garage 59's #188 Am car, driven by Chris Goodwin (GB), Chris Harris (GB), Alexander West (SWE) and works reserve driver Ross Gunn (GB), which was also a class contender until it was damaged in contact from a Pro car.

Nicki Thiim said: "To take the first 24 hour win for the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 is an incredible feeling. This team has put so much work into this weekend you wouldn't believe it and they deserve this. For me personally it's very special as well to get a win here, to add to those I have at the Nürburgring and Le Mans. Now I have a 24-hour set, it's time to go and get some more!"

Tom Ferrier, team owner of TF Sport said: "On Thursday night, when we were looking at re-building a car for the race after the crash I would have taken a finish! And the guys in the team have worked incredibly hard to get the car ready in time - we were still working on it on Saturday morning! We had an aggressive strategy to work our way through the field early on and that paid off. Once we had achieved that it was a case of keeping our heads down and avoiding trouble. Nicki always delivers, but all four of our drivers did a magnificent job, and you'd have to say as a standalone event this was probably the biggest win for our team!"

David King, President, Aston Martin Racing, said: “TF Sport are a strong and faithful partner for us and they deserve this, especially after all the hard work they put in to recover from the practice crash. Spa is a particularly difficult race to win, so to have six cars that were all competitive at various stages of the event proves just how far the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 has come. R-Motorsport were unfortunate to miss out on a well-deserved podium and Garage 59's Am car was an innocent victim in traffic. Their problems just go to prove how tough this race is.”

Six AMR's doing well in Spa 24 Qualifying

Thursday, July 25, 2019

After the fun and frivolity of yesterdays cruise down to Spa Francorchamps town for the events now customary meet and greet session between the teams, drivers and race fans it was back to business today with the start of the events formal qualifying process.

Having had was something of a bruising start for the #97 Oman Racing with TF Sport Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3 earlier today in Free Practice , the Qualifying sessions have just been completed this evening to determine three quarters of the positions for the start of Saturdays race and that has seen all six cars form the AMR stable in good position in their respective classes.

With Qualifying again being staged over one Qualifying session per driver per car, all three Pro class cars have made it through to tomorrows Super Pole shoot out with the remaining three cars all being in the top four in the Pro-Am, Silver Cup and Am classes out of the remaining 72 entries.

Q1 and Q2 were both red flagged interrupted by incident involving other cars on track - all fortunately not injuring significant damage to their vehicles but enough to delay the proceedings by nearly half an hour by the time Q4 had finished.

With Spa also experiencing very high track and air temperatures this week, thunderstorms are being predicted for some stage of the event with possible rain even arriving during the night practice that is now taking place.

Salih Yoluc unfortunately had an 'off' in the #97 car which caused sizeable front end damage to the car that appears to be running absolutely fine at the moment after Charlie Eastwood and Nicki Thiim both posted times to raise the cars position up to P4 in Pro-Am.

Ross Gunn is clearly looking forward to his 2019 excursion into the event, this time in the #188 Am Class Garage 59 car as he posted the second quickest time in the class to elevate that car also up to P4 in class.

The Silver Cup entered #762 R-Motorsport car of Ricky Collard, Hugo de Sadeleer, Aaro Vainio and Ferdinand Habsburg completed their Qualifying process to finish P30 overall and P3 in class.

That leaves the Pro entered #59 Garage 59 car of Jonny Adam, Andrew Watson and Come Ledogar and both #62 and #76 R-Motorsport cars of Maxime Martin, Matt Parry and Matthieu Vaxivierre with Marvin Kirchhofer, Jake Dennis and Alex Lynn to tough it out in tomorrows Superpole to determine the position of the top twenty starters.

Is this the year for Aston Martin Racing?

WEC Prologue concludes quietly in Barcelona for AMR

Thursday, July 25, 2019

Yesterday's final day of the two day World Endurance Championship Prologue concluded somewhat quietly for the Aston Martin Racing team after many of its driver line up had already made their way across Europe for the start of the Blancpain GT Series Spa 24Hour at Spa Francorchamps with also the team not electing to run in all of the available sessions.

Day two saw just two cars running out of their original three, after TF Sports Pro driver Jonny Adam had also departed for Spa leaving their new beautifully liveried AMR Vantage GTE without anyone to drive it as both Salih Yoluc and Charlie Eastwood had remained at Spa for the set up events of the 24 hour and so missed the test.

That left just Marco Sorensen and Darren Turner to share seat time aboard what was earmarked as the #97 GTE Pro car over yesterdays morning four hour tack session before time was called on that car by the team. Whilst Ferrari and Porsche were putting in significant laps, the #97 car only completed less than eighty laps on day 2 of the official test as they used up the last of their stocks of new specification of Michelin tyre.

In the new #98 GTE Am car of Paul Dalla Lana, that car also completed a similar number of laps with car regulars Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda sharing seat time with the Canadian businessman before they also called time on the proceedings.

As with Day 1 of the test, none of the AMR cars entered any lap times that challenged their respective class rivals as the test was conducted as just that - a test as teams and drivers readied themselves for the new WEC season ahead.

We understand that further testing will be conducted by both teams in between now and the start of the season at Silverstone at the end of August ahead of the first round of the season which is now just a four hour race.

We can't wait...........................!!

Additions to the AMR wardrobe coming soon?

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Beautifully modelled by the factory Aston Martin Racing drivers attending this weeks Prologue official test for the World Endurance Championship from the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, we can only assume that the latest version of the team shirt will become readily available to buy later as part of their increasing range of team apparel.

Checking the details listed on the official AMR Store, this new collared version of the lime coloured team polo shirt is not yet available but with the team evolving their colour schemes for a stronger green and lime colour base this season we can only assume that this scheme will eventually make its way through to what is available to the public as official replica apparel.

Day 1 of The Prologue complete

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Under the sweltering clear blue skies of southern Spain, three cars from the Aston Martin Racing stable completed the first of a two day official test today at the World Endurance Championship Prologue at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Only three cars out of a confirmed four car entry for the 2019-2020 WEC season that starts in little over five weeks time at Silverstone at the end of August, but with a long line of drivers all hoping of a chance of maintaining or progressing their way up onto the world stage.

Having unveiled their distinctly revised livery upon the AMR factory supported cars together with a brand new livery for the TF Sport prepared V8 Vantage GTE, over eleven drivers were on hand today to start the proceedings and have the required official Championship photographs taken as many found themselves double booked between this event and the start to the proceedings for the Total Spa 24H over in Belgium.

Drivers Jonny Adam (TF Sport), Ross Gunn, Nicki Thiim, Maxime Martin, Matthieu Vaxivierre and Alex Lynn only had time to participate in this mornings first 4 hours of track time before they all had to leave for Belgium and their AMR Partner team duties over there.

Whilst the #90 TF Sport car is already confirmed with Salih Yoluc being joined again this season by Charlie Eastwood and Jonny Adam, the other GTE Am entry for Paul Dalla Lana obviously has a degree a seat competition in regards who will be joining the Canadian this season after people like Vaxivierre and Gunn joined former regulars Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda at the test.

Times are not of any consequence at the test as the Championship will not be returning to the country during its first winter based season although decent, uninterrupted running obviously was. Whilst the laps times were recorded it is be difficult to determine any kind of pattern to performance amongst any of the GTE Pro or GTE Am fields without the technical data being available.

In GTE Pro - Martin, Thiim and Lynn completed 95 laps between them with Martin posting the seventh quickest time of the session this morning whilst Adam was quickest AMR runner in the Am class in his brand new TF Sport car, just ahead of Vaxivierre in the #98. Laps from Lauda, Turner and Gunn also saw off the session for them.

In this afternoons four hour session only Marco Sorensen ran in the #97 Pro car completing a 'leisurely' 40 laps whilst Lamy, Laura, Turner and Dalla Lana all ran in the #98 car. With Adam now having left the circuit and with his co-drivers Yoluc and Eastwood remaining at Spa, we believe that that car will not run again at the test.

That still leaves plenty of drivers on had to undertake driving duties on the second and final day of the test tomorrow as AMR hope to make use of their final allocation of new confidential Michelin tyres ahead of the Silverstone opener.

Best chance ever for an Aston Martin Racing car to win at Spa 24

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

The 2019 TOTAL 24 Hours of Spa will feature the strongest ever Aston Martin partner team entry as the British luxury sportscar manufacturer bids to secure its first outright victory in the legendary Belgian race this weekend.

With no less than six Vantage GT3s in the race, it is the largest frontline Aston Martin contingent entered in the event - the blue riband round of the Blancpain GT Endurance Series. The cars will be run by some of AMR's most valued partner teams Garage 59, R-Motorsport and TF Sport, and they will be buoyed by Optimum Motorsport's impressive win with the car at Spa in the domestic British GT Championship last weekend.

Moreover, spread among the three teams will be five of Aston Martin Racing's works drivers -
Alex Lynn (GB), Maxime Martin (BEL), Nicki Thiim (DEN), Jonny Adam (GB) and Ross Gunn (GB) - as well as Aston Martin High Performance Test driver Chris Goodwin and BBC Top Gear presenter Chris Harris.

Series front-runner R-Motorsport will contest the race with a bumper three-car entry. The Swiss team enters their two regular Blancpain GT Vantage GT3s in the Pro class; the #62 for Matthieu Vaxiviére (F), Matt Parry (GB) and Martin, and the #76 for Marvin Kirkhhöfer (D), Jake Dennis (GB) and Lynn (GB). Then it will run a third car in the Silver Cup class for Ricky Collard (GB), Hugo de Sadeleer (CHE), Ferdinand von Habsburg (A) and Aaro Vainio (I).

Garage 59 have entered their two regular Blancpain GT line-ups of Cóme Ledogar (F), Andrew Watson (GB) and Adam in the Pro #59 entry, while Alexander West (SWE), Harris and Goodwin, who lie second the Am class championship standings after their victory in the last round at Paul Ricard, will race the #188 car along with works driver Gunn.

TF Sport Racing With Oman, whose drivers Salih Yoluc (TUR), Ahmad Al Harthy (UAE) and AMR Junior driver Charlie Eastwood (IRL) lead the Pro-Am standings after three consecutive podium finishes and two pole positions, will be joined in the #97 car by Thiim who also races for the team in British GTs.

David King, President, Aston Martin Racing, said: “You only have to cast your eyes over the 72-car entry for the TOTAL Hours of Spa to realise the quality of the field and the importance of the event in the international GT calendar, so for Aston Martin's partner teams to going there in such numbers and strength in depth is a true testament to the Vantage GT3's qualities as a customer racing package. Optimum Motorsport’s dominant win in the British GT Championship last weekend, and the consistent level of competitive performances around the world, suggests that the car is on the brink of a breakthrough result halfway through its first season. We have every reason to expect the Vantage GT3 to be in contention for honours this weekend, and wish our partner teams the best of luck.”

The TOTAL 24 Hours of Spa begins at 1630 CET on Saturday, 27 July with qualifying taking place at 2000 CET on Thursday 25 July. The event can be followed around the world on the Blancpain GT Series official livestream YouTube.

Weekend round up

Monday, July 22, 2019

With our own sporting commitments last weekend keeping ourselves away from both race track and laptop together with the speed in which fresh news is coming out into the public domain, we only have time (literally and metaphorical) to post this quick recap of the weekends racing adventures for #TeamAMR.

The biggest event in terms of volume of AMR participants was of course the British GT Championships annual visit to Spa Francorchamps which serves as the catalyst to the SRO's Speed week of motorsport and the Total 24H Spa which starts on track tomorrow.

Fresh from his first race win of the year in the International GT Open series, Optimum Motorsports Ollie Wilkinson maintained that momentum aboard his Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 to secure his and their first overall pole position in the British GT with co-driver Bradley Ellis during some really tricky track conditions as the heavens opened just before the first of the four Qualifying sessions.

That feat was even more remarkable as the next highest placed AMR was down in P10 with the #47 TF Sport car of Graham Davidson and Jonny Adam. That lad from Leeds is seriously going places!

In GT4, a strong showing from the six AMR Vantage crews (#61 Academy would be running with a McLaren 570s due to previous damage to their Vantage) would be the prelude to a magnificent showing during Sundays two hour race.

Come yesterdays race, the #96 Optimum GT3 would go on to convert their pole position start into a lights to flag overall race win to beat the Ram Racing Mercedes AMG by over ten seconds!

Not a podium contending car this time, it was good to see that the #2 TF Sport GT3 of Mark Farmer and Nicki Thiim made up for some lost ground with a albeit distant P5 finish whereas the debuting M2 Competition Vantage GT3 of Tony Quinn and Darren Turner could be proud of their 13th position finish in a car and circuit that the now New Zealand domiciled Scott had not seen before now.

In GT4, it was double delight for the TF Sport team as the #97 Vantage of Tom Canning and Ashley Hand who claimed their first class win of the season after the leading #4 McLaren suffered technical issue going into the final lap after a slight collision with the #97 at the bus stop. They were supported on the podium by their sister #95 car of Patrick Kibble and Josh Price who claimed third in class.

In GT4 Pro-Am, a fourth place finish saw the Championship lead for Beechdean AMR's Martin Plowman and Kelvin Fletcher reduce to just half a point after the extended points round of Spa with just two rounds remaining.

Over in Japan, D'Station Racing AMR baptised their brand new Vantage GT3 with a P2 finish in the latest round of the Pirelli Super Taikyu Series from Autopolis on the southern most island of the country.

After qualifying P4 in the overall ST-X class for Sundays race, drivers Tsubasa Kondo, team co-Principle Satoshi Hoshino and their Super GT driver Tomonobu Fujii would run a competitive race until track conditions became quite treacherous with a passing Typhoon and a late puncture dropped the #777 car down to P2 by the time the race was red flagged and abandoned due to the conditions.

Finally but by no means least, its was sad to read of some of the comments coming out a Barcelona after the latest round of the Michelin Le Mans Cup Series there on Saturday in regards to the race experience suffered by Ross Gunn aboard the Beechdean AMR Vantage GT3.

With the new Vantage having been very much the bridesmaid at the previous rounds of the series (except for race two at Le Mans) to date compared to the Ferrari 488, the red, white and blue #99 car found its 'charge' from its super Silver driver in the second stage of the race somewhat thwarted by a lumbering LMP3 car the seemed to position itself just enough ahead of Ross Gunn to prevent his progress to the back of the then P3 Ferrari.

Team boss and co-driver Andrew Howard tweeted that the #55 Spirit of Race prepared LMP3 car had a lap time of 1:45:50 before overtaking Gunn on the circuit before reducing that time to 1:49:00 afterwards. If true - sanctions should really be taken against those involved - motor racing is expensive enough as it is without any cross class entrant, driver or team taking matters 'into their own hands' to influence the outcome.  Not good!

Next up this week (like tomorrow) is the start of the two day World Endurance Championship Prologue official test from Barcelona ahead of the start of the Spa 24 that also commences tomorrow.
