Corsa Horizon AMR head the the trio of Astons going into Michelin Pilot Challenge race at Laguna Seca

Saturday, April 30, 2022

Formalities over at the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca with the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series soon to be getting down to their third round of the season later today around the California circuit.

After rounds on the east coast at both Daytona and Sebring in Florida, three Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s have made the long haul over to virtually the Californian coast near Monterey for this two-hour event.

Now all confirmed as full season entries, the #12 Corsa Horizon AMR of Manny Franco and Josh Hurley have come away with their best Qualifying session of the season so far to head the AMR trio into this evening’s race.

Clocking a time of 1:32:030 was enough for Franco to pip the more established #7 Volt Racing car of Alan Brynjolfsson to claim P6 overall in the GS class, ahead that of 1:31:258 and P10 for the bright yellow Volt car that Brynjolfsson will share with Trent Hindman.

The #09 Stoner Car Care AMR of Ramin Abdolvahabi and Rob Ecklin ended Qualifying in P32 overall, P25 in the GS class and P4 in their own GS sub class.

Pole position went to the #56 Murillo Racing Mercedes AMG GT4 and Eric Foss and a certain Kenton Koch (from Bsport Racing GT4 America fame) after some dominating running from the two Murillo cars over the day to snatch pole from the so far series dominating RS1 Porsche of Stevan McAleer and Alex Premat.

The race is scheduled to begin at 16:00hrs local.

Its been such a long time but Spa is always worth the wait!

Saturday, April 30, 2022

Almost three years to the day and we will finally be back out on the road again as we head down to Spa Francorchamps next week for the second round of the 2022 World Endurance Championship.

Much has of course changed since our last, memorable visit to the historical Belgium circuit back in 2019 as nothing short of blood, sweat and tears from the FIA WEC and their supporting partners has kept the world championship on track after the start of the pandemic just a year later to that round to where we are today. The thought back then of waking up to race day back then to find a heavy dusting of snow at the start and then torrential icing rain at the end is an experience hard to forget but then, that is one of the very reasons to travel to Spa if you have never been before!

Last time we were there, the racing commitment from Aston Martin Racing and its Partner teams was also somewhat different from what we find today as two factory supported GTE Pro entries were of course supported by two AMR Partner Team entries from both Northwest AMR and TF Sport. Today we simply have three GTE Am entries from both Northwest AMR and TF Sport teams after the financial situation within the parent company put paid to them defending their GTE Pro crown of 2020.

For these crews and teams, there was much to celebrate back in 2019 with a class win in GTE Pro for the #97 car of Alex Lynn and Maxime Martin and a GTE Am P2 finish at the end for the older specification AMR Vantage #90 TF Sport car of Salih Yoluc, Charlie Eastwood and Euan Hankey.

Moving back forward to this season and the track success has continued for the now, all turbo charged AMR Vantage GTE crews after the opening round of this season at Sebring International Raceway in March when the #98 Northwest AMR of Paul Dalla Lana, Nicki Thiim and David Pittard beat the pole setting #33 TF Sport AMR car of Ben Keating, Marco Sorenson, and Florian Latorre to take an early ten-point lead into this second round.

Since Sebring, we have also learned of the swapping out of Frenchman Latorre from the #33 TF Sport car in favour of Portuguese racer Henrique Chaves for the remainder of the FIA WEC season and including Le Mans in June. Reasons for that change will be (we assume) tactical or political after Latorre’s GTE debut in Florida left nothing obvious to consider but is something that still hasn’t been explained by the team.

After the 1000 miles of Sebring, we are back to a traditional six hours of Spa Francorchamps next Saturday with thirty-seven entries across the Hypercar, LMP2, GTE Pro and GTE Am classes now confirmed for the track action that begins on Thursday.

Joining the #98 Northwest AMR and #33 TF Sport Aston Martins in Belgium amongst the thirteen strong GTE Am class again will of course be the #777 D’Station Racing AMR of Satoshi Hoshino, Tomonobu Fujii and Charlie Fagg after their sixth placed finish at Sebring with their new for 2022 driver line up.

Whereas we certainly do not want to see any repeat of last year’s Free Practice incidents and accidents for the AMR runners, Qualifying and race pace was good for these cars last time out although this time out, the #98 and #33 cars do of course have the benefit of their winning last time out success ballast to contend with – 30kg over their base weight for the #98 crew and 20kg more for the #33 crew. The #777 car will just need to stop the unforced errors and resulting penalties and they too could easily move up the order at Spa.

Despite all the additional paperwork and certification that appears still to be required to travel and media accreditation these days, it will certainly be good to get back to Spa!!

Street Art Racings Aston Martins due to run at next round of GT Open at Paul Ricard next month

Wednesday, April 27, 2022

Looking at yesterday’s reveal of the entry list ahead of the opening round of the GT Open Series from Estoril this weekend, highlighted for us a clear and obvious absentee from the list of nineteen GT3 entries.

Having expected to see a listing for the Street Art Racing Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 of Pascal Bachmann, its omission did worry us for a time before the gentleman driver later confirmed the situation with us today.

It appears that the good old fashioned ‘day job’ has again gotten in the way of the ‘fun job’ with unavoidable business commitments now keeping the Swiss driver and his Belgium team away from the Portuguese racetrack for this opening round of the season.

He did however assure us that they will be at the next round of the season that takes place at the Circuit Paul Ricard in the south of France in little under three week’s time when his co-driver (if any) will also be finally revealed!

That event will also see the team’s AMR Vantage GT4 entry of Julien Darras and Jahid Fazal-Karim take to the track within the GT Open Cup Series as their season opener in France.

Next stop Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca for the two Heart of Racing AMRs

Monday, April 25, 2022

The fourth round of the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship heads back west again for their second round of the Sprint Cup Championship with again, two Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTD entries running from the Heart of Racing team.

After two gruelling endurance rounds at the start of the year from Florida, the opening Sprint round under the sunshine and warmth of Long Beach California proved itself to be the ideal tonic for a team otherwise blighted with technical issues and accident woes.

A GTD Pro Class win for driver Ross Gunn and Alex Riberas around the tight street circuit layout of Long Beach at the end of the race certainly went a long way to put smiles back on the faces of the team although their Sprint Cup contending car of Maxime Martin and Roman De Angelis failed to capitalise upon some good fortune mid race. After their pit stop strategy left Martin out front in class, a collision with another car at a restart after one of many FCY’s literally impacted into the side of the #27 and then into the barrier with terminal steering damage.

This weekend’s event from the Weathertech raceway Laguna Seca is the second Sprint Cup race of the season but again features both cars as each result counts towards the new for 2022 GTD Pro Championship.

Thirty-two cars from the DPi, LMP2, GTD Pro and GTD classes are expected this weekend with five other cars competing against the #23 of Gunn and Riberas and a further thirteen GTD cars against De Angelis and Martin.

Track activity around the 2.2-mile circuit starts on Friday evening with the first Free Practice session before a further practice and Qualifying session on Saturday. The race begins at 15.10hrs local on Sunday.

Just three AMR Vantage GT4s this time around as Michelin Pilot Challenge visits Laguna Seca

Monday, April 25, 2022

Having not been part of the IMSA Long Beach race programme earlier this month, the Michelin Pilot Challenge Series also gets back to racing this weekend from the Weathertech raceway Laguna Seca for their third round of the season.

Having raced out at both Daytona and Sebring in Florida, this is their first ‘fly away’ event on the west coast of the USA for what will be a ten-round season for them.

Last time out at Sebring back in mid-March, it was the #7 Volt Racing Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 of Alan Brynjolfsson and Trent Hindman who again shone after having qualified in fifth to see out their two-hour race in second place overall.

That was matched by the #09 Stoner Car Care AMR Vantage GT4 entry of Rob Ecklin and Ramin Abdolvahabi who secured their first podium of the year in second within the new for 2022 Bronze Cup class.

After their untimely retirement during the opening round of the season at Daytona, Sebring saw a much stronger performance from the series debutants from the NTE Racing team for drivers Manny Franko and Josh Hurley although the Automatic Racing Bronze Cup GT4 entry for Paul Kiebler and Jon Branam did end their day early again after unnecessary contact in the opening laps.

This weekend’s events in California again sees a combined grid size of forty-one cars being listed – twenty-eight in GS and thirteen TCR based cars with just three Aston Martins taking part this time around.

Volt Racing, Stoner Car Care and NTE Sport prepared Corsa Horizon cars are again all listed with their existing drivers but there is no #27 Automatic Racing entry for Kiebler/Branam despite previous reports of them also confirming a full season commitment prior to Sebring.

For this series, track action again begins this Friday with two Free Practice sessions before Qualifying and their customary two-hour race on Saturday, with the race starting at 19:00hrs local.

A worthy visit to Oschersleben for the Aston Martin Racing teams at ADAC GT4 Germany opener

Sunday, April 24, 2022

Two sensational races from the opening round of the 2022 ADAC GT4 Germany Series from Oschersleben proved to provide multiple worthy podia finishes for many of the seven Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 crews although a double – double was only snatched at the very last minute in Sunday’s second race.

Opening the weekend with a front row lockout for Saturday’s opening one hour race had brothers Phil and Ben Dorr occupy the front row of the grid with their two, family team prepared cars with only the Prosport Racing AMR of Mike David Ortmann and Hugo Sasse joining them within the top 10.

Still under bright skies and warm sunshine, the Dorr brothers were able to hold position during the opening corners of the Race 1 before the #007 of Ben Dorr finally succumbed to the pressure from the Toyota behind to drop to P3.

On only the second lap, two spinning Mercedes AMG GT4’s came close to collected Ortmann’s #24 car but did bring out the Safety Car losing them all nearly ten minutes of race time. Going back to green, Ortmann was able to move up to P5 overall to round out a healthy AMR top five just as the pit window opened.

After the prescribed minimum pit stop timed window had passed, the #007 Dorr car with Romain Leroux now aboard had jumped the Toyota for position to reclaim its original P2 place behind Indy Dontjie who was now in the #69 car.

The #6 Racing One AMR of Euan McKay and Tom Wood would have a quieter introduction into the series from their P15 starting position as Wood would elevate them up to an opening P11 finish by the end.

Whilst the #69 and #007 Dorr cars would confirm the top two steps of the podium after their 1-2 finish, the #24 Prosport car of Ortmann and Sasse would also claim a P5 overall finish but also P3 in the Junior Class for Sasse.

The remaining Aston Martin’s of Nico Hantke/Simon Connor Primm, Sandro and Juliano Holzem and Yevgen Sokolovskiy and Christopher Rohner would all finish their opening race of the season in P8 overall/P4 in Junior, P21 overall/P10 Junior and P24 overall/P4 Trophy class respectively.

Sunday was however a much colder morning for Qualifying and this time it was the #6 Racing One Aston Martin of Tom Wood who secured pole position for race 2, ahead of the #69 Dorr car of Dontjie in second (for another AMR front row lock out), Leroux in P5 in his #007 with Hantke P8 in his #95 car and Sasse rounding out the top ten for AMR runners in tenth in his #24 Prosport car.

A lightning start form the young Englishman saw his quickly establish a healthy lead to any of those chasing as earlier as the end of the opening lap with only Dontjie hanging on to second as the pack formed into two or three packs of competing cars behind with both Leroux and Hantke amid the first.

Just approaching the opening of the pit window, a lunge up the inside at turn 12 from Leroux spun the #20 Mercedes which then stopped at the side of the track. With the pit window then opening, and with cars already in pit lap, any Safety Car now would ruin people’s races so for a time, it was dealt with via double waved yellows.

With three more cars tangling and getting stuck in the gravel another Safety Car was inevitable as soon as the final car had pitted. A good outlap from McKay had preserved their lead position with Phil Dorr again immediately behind as the next time around, a Porsche would then split the two Astons for position as the Safety Car was eventually deployed.

A drive through penalty (for the earlier contact with the #20 car) and further contact for Ben Dorr in the #007 would put any podium hopes that they may have had to bed as McKay pulled away again from the pack behind.

What happened next was simply unbelievable as the #22 Porsche of Vincent Andronaco simply scythed through the field from sixth as the race finally went back to green with little over twelve-minute remaining. Up to P5, P4, P3 and then onto the rear of Dorr’s #69 car saw no one stopping the progress of the Porsche.

Up to P2 and then into the lead on the last timed lap as the race clock had counted down as the cars entered their + 1 lap to the chequered flag.

Having led all but the last one and a half laps of the race, the #6 racing One crew of Wood and McKay had to settle for their first podium of the season down in second overall with Dorr and Dontjie completing the overall podium in third.

This time, the #24 Prosport car of Ortmann and Sasse would finish P4 overall but this time second in Junior for Sasse with Hantke and Connor Primm finishing just outside of the top 10 this time.

Next round of the season will be from the Red Bull Ring in Austria in mid-May.

Three Astons amongst an entry of 160 cars for round three of the NLS this weekend

Thursday, April 21, 2022

Completing the German rounds of motorsport this weekend is (finger crossed again) in the Nurburgring Langstrecken Serie who hold their third round of their 2022 season around the infamous and notorious Nurburgring Grand Prix circuit and Nordschliefe combination.

With round two having been cancelled due to weather even before the day back at the end of March, this weekend we again expect to see a slightly loaded Aston Martin Racing partner and customer team participation as some within AMR circles prepare to think and prepare for the upcoming ADAC Total 24hr race due to run later in May.

As far as the NLS full season entries are concerned, we again see the #17 PROsport Racing AMR Vantage GT3 of Maxime Dumarey and Jean Glorieux who undoubtedly want to build upon the success of that car in the opening round after Nico Verdonck was called into action for an incapacitated Glorieux to claim a P14 in the full Pro class. This weekend, the #17 car is due to return to its GT3 Pro-Am class.

With us expecting not to see either of the team’s AMR Vantage GT4s in action at the NLS by virtue of two cars racing at the opening round of the ADAC GT4 Germany Series at Oschersleben this weekend, we do in fact see again the #176 SP10 classed GT4 of Guido Dumarey and Alex Walker in action in an obvious third car for the team. Last time out, the #176 claimed a P2 in class result at the end of NLS1 in March.

The additional AMR entry this weekend will of course be the TF Sport prepared GT3 Pro entry for drivers Marco Sorenson, David Pittard and Maxime Martin as the crew and team prepare for a full pseudo factory assault on the biggest prize in GT3 racing and one that has illuded the team for some years now at the 24 hours. None of those really need any introduction from us!!

A possible eight AMR Vantage GT4 entry into this seasons ADAC GT4 Germany Series that starts this weekend

Wednesday, April 20, 2022

Unlike the craziness of last weekend’s racing action, this coming weekend is thankfully somewhat quieter with just a couple of series hosting events involving Aston Martin Racing customer and partner teams, and both from venues within Germany.

The ADAC GT4 Germany Series kicks off its 2022 campaign this weekend from Oschersleben with a mighty eight AMR Vantage GT4 crews being shown amongst the twenty-nine entries listed so far for the opening round.

One of those listed from the German based Racing One team still has TBA denoted against the driver names together with another previously announced entry from the Team Speed Monkeys now not being listed at all, despite being ‘confirmed’ by the team earlier in the year.

Last week we saw Racing One confirm their first full season entry for both Tom Wood and Euan McKay making a possible brace of cars for the team in the series as well as two cars from the PROsport Racing team for both Hugo Sasse/Mike David Ortmann and Yevgen Sokolovskiy/Christopher Rohner and the four cars from the Doer Motorsport team.

That sees that team increase their series entry from one full season car to four having also ran two cars in the series at the end for brothers Ben and Phil Dorr.

Also having a change around in drivers from last season sees Ben Dorr now being partnered with 2021 FFSA GT4 Silver Cup Champion Romain Leroux, Phil Dorr with Indy Dontjie, Nico Hantke now with Simon Connor Primm and two GT debutants together in brothers Sandro and Juliano Holzem.

Like many GT4 series these days, the ADAC GT4 Germany runs two one-hour long pit stop punctuated races per weekend across its six-round season.

A dream start for Bsport Racing at GT4 America opener from Sonoma

Tuesday, April 19, 2022

Along with the second round of the GT America Series for solo drivers came the opening round of the GT4 America Series for their two driver line up with this time six Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 powered crews competing amongst the forty-two listed entries.

Like the parallel GT America Series came new recruits to the AMR marque as the Flying Lizard team returned to the brand with their pairing of Elias Sabo and Andy Lee as well as Zelus Motorsport’s Sean Whalen pairing up this time around with Matt Guiver aboard their #888 car.

This year also saw the return of the Bsport Racing team for both Bryan Putt and Kenton Koch, the Heart of Racing team with Gray Newell and Ian James, Jason Bell and Andrew Davis aboard their #2 GMG Racing car and Aaron Povoledo and Ross Chouest committing to further involvement together in the two SRO series but a notable hole within the paddock came of course with the untimely loss of Paul Terry over the winter.

Two – one hour races this time around and straight into a FCY in Saturday afternoons first race as car tangled cars were left stranded on track before a brief period of racing before a sizable impact for Chouest in his #50 car with a BMW left parts of the wheel and suspension left strewn across the start straight – red flag!!!

After the restart and driver change however, we began to see some quality racing that this series is renowned for again as Koch, James and Lee all battled it out for a time for top honours in their Pro-Am class. Side by side, round the outside and all to be reversed again by the next corner meant for some terrific racing.

Unfortunately for James, an off-road excursion before the final lap dropped them out of contention by the #15 Bsport Racing car of Putt/Koch came home third overall to take the Pro-Am race win just ahead of the debuting Flying Lizard AMR of Sabo/Lee in P5 overall and P3 in class with Bell/Davis having to make do in P8 in class.

Sundays second race and again fastest laps during race 1 counted for the starting order as the #15 lead the AMR field from P3 and the Chouest/Povoledo #50 car from P4. The Heart of Racing AMR would however be missing after sizeable damage caused to it after Newell’s last GT America race was too much to complete in the time available.

Another brief few laps before another FCY after contact between cars lost a further ten minutes as the car’s Pro drivers lead the charge around an otherwise now dry track after Saturday’s rain.

With then Putt and Povoledo leading the Pro-Am chase behind the then Silver Cup leaders following the compulsory pit stops, that was quickly a race that needn’t be won by either crew as they then battled it out together for their own class honours.

Thankfully finishing the series visit to Sonoma on a better note that which it started with the opening GT America race, the second GT4 America race finished with the #15 Bsport car claiming a second straight class win over that P2 place for the #50 Chouest/Povoledo combo by less than one second. Again, the #2 GMG crew of Bell/Davis would have to put up with a P6 in class finish at the end.

New for the 2022 season, the GT4 America Series moves onto the Ozarks International Raceway for their second round of the season in a month’s time.

Seven Aston Martin's claim just one podium finish at second round of GT America from Sonoma

Tuesday, April 19, 2022

The second round of the GT America Series from Sonoma finally saw a grid of seven Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s take to the Sonoma Raceway for their two, forty minute solo bronze ranked drivers.

With some having already opening their 2022 account with the opening pair of races around the street circuit of St Petersburg last month, this was for several others their first competitive race aboard their AMR GT4 this season.

Newcomers from the Flying Lizard team for Elias Sabo and Moisey Uretsky with his #55 API prepared Aston were more than welcome to join the more established runners from GMG Racing, Heart of Racing, Bsport Racing and a renamed Chouest Povoledo Racing teams amongst the combined GT3/GT4 grid of twenty-five cars.

Unfortunately for the spectacle of racing around the undulating and sometimes expansive circuit of Sonoma, the untimely rain and ‘first day at the office’ mentality lead to both races becoming something of a caution ‘fest as track issue after track issue blighted the efforts of many.

Spinners on the warmup laps as well as the opening lap of race 1 on Saturday proved the point for some as others proved that side by side racing was possible as both Ross Chouest and Jason Bell ran neck and neck for P2.

Unfortunately for Bryan Putt, his introduction to the single driver series continued along its low ebb of St Petersburg as a spin and resulting visit to pit lane saw off his early chances in California. Further spins for Sabo and an untimely visit to the tyre wall for Sean Whalen ended with race one in a state of confusion as a false start for many was called and Chouest lost out on his seeming first series win passed the chequered flag.

Amended results meant that only Chouest, Gray Newell and Sabo were listed as timely finishes with Bell, Uretsky, Putt and Whalen all failing to finish on the lead lap if at all.

Sundays second race was better weather wise but that was about it as fastest laps in race 1 again decided starting positions making for a bizarre position of the top AMR places being represented by both Sabo in P3 and Whalen in P6!

Another dubious start behind another not so level GT4 grid let Whalen lead the race on lap 2 aboard his #888 car whilst Sabo quickly faulted with technical issues.

Halfway through the race and big front end damage to Newell’s Heart of Racing AMR after a collision saw the Safety Car come out to retrieve the debris losing a further twenty four minutes of race time as the #15 Bsport car of Putt had further problems on track.

Another spun car (Whalen) and Safety Car later and a final dash to the flag allowed Bell to claim his second podium of the season so far with a P3 with Chouest close behind in P4.

A better race this time however for Uretsky as he brought his bright yellow coloured Aston home in P7 in only his second competitive race in it.

Next round of the series takes us to the Virginia International Raceway in mid-June.

Driver swap at TF Sport ahead of 2nd round of WEC at Spa Francorchamps?

Tuesday, April 19, 2022

Just over two weeks before the second round of the 2022 World Endurance Championship from Spa Francorchamps in Belgium and we thought all was well within the three full season Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE powered entries from both TF Sport and Northwest AMR!

That was until today!!

So far not acknowledged by either the FIA WEC within their entry list expected for the six hours of Spa which takes place on the 7th May nor the team, but certainly within the realms of social media, sees the #33 4 Horseman car of Ben Keating apparently revise its driver line in time for the next round in Belgium and beyond.

Now being stated on-line as joining both Keating and Marco Sorensen within the blue livered AMR Vantage GTE will be Henrique Chaves who takes the place of Frenchman Florian Latorre who debuted within the WEC with the team at the opening round of the season last month at Sebring.

Reasons for the change are not clear as after the #33 car finished only second in class to the #98 Northwest AMR of Paul Dalla Lana, Nicki Thiim and David Pittard at the end of the opening 1000 miles of Sebring!!

Chaves did of course test with the AMR collective at Sebring when Pittard’s race category status was unclear at the time following his winter FIA revision and retains other AMR drives within other series.

Only time will tell us of the reasons behind this swap.
