AMR powered racing round ups for this weekends events

Tuesday, April 30, 2024

In this race packed weekend ahead, three more Aston Martin Racing powered crews will also participate within their elective race series, and that’s on top of the six series already listed.

Recently, we have been reading about British racer Charlie Fagg rejoining the Japanese based D’Station Racing AMR team as they sort out some of their driver clashes with their factory driver Marco Sorensen.

For this weekend and for all following WEC/Super GT date clashes moving forward, the Brit will join both Sorensen and Tomonobu Fujii within the teams Super GT entry at their home round of Fuji Speedway this weekend and will replace the Dane for the further diary clashes as they prioritise their World Endurance Championship hopes with the factory driver.

Just one round into their Super GT Series return, the #777 AMR Vantage GT3 crew presently rest fifth within the GT300 Teams Championship.

Also racing for the first time this season over in the Far East will be the opening rounds of the Thailand Super Series from the Chang International Circuit.

Having seemingly lost the Viper Niza Racing team to Mercedes over the winter, it appears that the recently announced Team New Zealand Earl Bamber Motorsport entry of Graham Dowsett and Ananthorn Tangniannatchi will this year be the sole AMR entry with their older spec Vantage GT4.

Also racing together for the first time with be the Lazarus Corse AMR Vantage GT3 entry into the Italian GT Championship from Misano.

After something of a very long-winded introduction, the team recently confirmed that drivers Mattia Di Giusto and William Alatalo will be driving what is still an older generation 16A version of the Vantage GT3 a this opening round.

All completed their first test together at a race soaked Misano circuit only a couple of weeks ago and with driver crews getting ever more competent within the series, this will be a hard year for this young duo.

A frustrating start to their ADAC series for both Walkenhorts and Eastside Motorsport

Tuesday, April 30, 2024

It was a challenging return to the ADAC GT Masters Series for the two Walkenhorst Motorsport Aston Martin Racing powered crews at their opening round to the season at Oschersleben last weekend.

The first time in a handful of years that the British brand has been represented within the series obviously placed a lot of pressure upon the two young drivers crews of Mike David Ortmann, Denis Bulatov (#34 car) and Chandler Hull and Nico Hantke (#35 car) went up against some big names in GT racing within the sixteen strong grid.

Two decent ‘banker’ results after race 1 saw the #34 car beat their sister car in both Qualifying and at the end of the first hour long race in P9 and P12 respectively and it was hoped that a mid-event Balance of Performance adjustment would benefit the new Vantage GT3.

Indeed, small improvements were the result after Sundays closing race after the #34 again showed itself to be faster than its sister car as both completed an opening race weekend with an improving result package as the #34 came home P7 and the #35 P13 but with both crews scoring valuable Championship points at the end.

The series now moves onto the Hockenheimring early June.

Supporting this series was again the ADAC GT4 Germany Series which this year has just one Vantage GT4 crew within it and this time from the Eastside Motorsport with Zakspeed team with drivers Jan Marschalkowski and Phillip Gogollok.

Running the new 2024 AMR Vantage GT4 for the first time, the ESM crew endured something of a similarly frustrating opening rounds to their GT Masters equivalents in their first GT4 season together in that combination (although both drivers fully conversant with the series) as they brought home a P8 and a P14 finish at the end of their two-hour long races despite running within the top five during the early Free Practice sessions.

The next round for this series will however be earlier, at the Lausitzring in late May.

#888 TLM Racing Aston Martin secures another class double in WRL

Monday, April 29, 2024

Congratulations to the TLM Racing entered Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 crew of Zang O’Shaunessy and JP Southern who continued their podium winning ways within the World Racing League Series at its latest double header from Road America.

Having taken what was on track two overall wins last time out at Barber before post-race penalties struck them from the order from race 1, this weekend’s eight plus seven-hour affair saw the #888 crew secure what was again on track a third in class and first in class before an earlier contact saw the crew again lose out on a class win to leave them settling for a pair of P3 finishes.

Whilst they succeeded, fellow #172 TLM Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 with the Hamman family crew as well as the 89X Motorsport AMR did not fare so well as an exhaust issue for the #89X car saw them miss out on race 1 whilst the #172 stopped two thirds through.

Whilst the #89X car was able to start race 2 on Sunday, the #172 TLM was not.

The next round of the series due at Daytona in early June has now been cancelled due to unscheduled track maintenance.

A full set of 2024 Aston Martin Vantages hit the track ahead of tomorrows Silverstone 500

Saturday, April 27, 2024

An interesting day was had by all at Silverstone today as the British GT Championship rolled into its annual visit to the home of British motor racing for its Blue Ribband Silverstone 500 event.

Unfortunately, gone were the dry track and warm springtime temperatures of yesterday to be replaced with sullen skies with rain falling even before the cars hit the track for this morning’s Free Practice as well as absolutely freezing temperatures.

Despite this, the British racing fan is a hardy one and a healthy number of those were still seen walking over the bridge and into the heart of the Northampton Circuit for today’s Free Practice and Qualifying sessions.

Walking the pit lane this morning, all five Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s and GT4’s were this time all ship shape and Bristol fashion as the Blackthorn AMR team showed off their new 2024 cars for the first time in anger. Looking at both, the #87 car of Giacomo Petrobelli and Jonny Adam was a converted 16A whilst the #10 car of Matt Topham and Josh Rowledge was a brand new 38A addition.

With the reduced grid of now forty-one cars having lost one McLaren GT3 during yesterdays private testing, full wets were the initial order of the day as the forecast remain ominous and drivers went out looking to see just where the grid laid. Soon seeing cars washing out at Copse as the track dried and the wets struggled, it was of no surprise that many went for slicks but those who did (like Jamie Day within the #7 Forsetti Motorsport GT4, soon came back in for wets as the rains returned for the end of the session.

Despite this, the #87 Blackthorn car was fourth quickest with the #97 Beechdean AMR of Andrew Howard and Jessica Hawkins in eighth (P3 within their own Silver-Am class) whilst the #10 car was just happy to sign off an FP1 session without incident!! The two Forsetti GT4’ meanwhile finished their mornings work fourth overall in GT4 and first within their Pro-Am class for the #47 Marc Warren/Will Orton combo whilst Mikey Porter and Day finished that session P7 in GT4 and P4 in their Silver Class.

Free Practice 2 (now called Pre-Qualifying) was a similar affair as all three GT3’s did a siting lap before returning to pit lane for adjustments, back out, more adjustments before the session was some minutes old before any of them had done a timed lap. A short break was later in order as the #61 Mustang ground to a halt down the Hanger Straight, eventually bringing out the red flag but within five or six minutes the remaining cars were back out again.

As that session drew to a close, the #97 Beechdean car of Howard was to go a little off piste with an unceremonious three-hundred-and-sixty-degree spin coming out of Maggots. It would have been a perfect ten for artistic impression had he been able to straighten the car up again to face the way he was going but another one eighty-degree spin put paid to that. Still, no damage and the session was nigh on done for them anyway, so they lived to fight another day.

At the end of that session, the #87 Blackthorn car was again the fastest Aston Martin in P6 overall but the two silver-am contesting Aston’s had traded places with the #10 pipping the #97 for honours by just over half a second whilst the two GT4’s from Forsetti continued much where they had left off this morning.

Going in Qualifying and with tomorrows race being a single three-hour affair, it was back to the Championships aggregated process with each driver running a ten-minute session before the sum of their times determined their starting order tomorrow. As usual, the GT3 Am’s started before the second driver and much the same in GT4.

Despite the preferences of some at the GT4 end of the pitlane, the track was now bone dry, so slicks were the only option as each session ran their turn. Again, the sessions ran incident free although Warren was the only AMR driver to have a lap time dropped due to exceeding track limits – other crews did that of course but the other nine drivers ran clean laps!!

The nett result was that in GT3, the #87 Blackthorn car remained the fastest Aston Martin and will start tomorrows race from P9 (P8 in Pro-Am), the #97 Beechdean next fastest in P12 (P3 in Silver-Am) and the #10 Blackthorn P19 overall (P7 in class).

Then in GT4, the #7 Forsetti was again fastest out the pair and will start from the second row in P3 whilst the #47 Pro-Am car will start P7 overall and P3 in class.

A three-hour race and mandatory minimum timed stops to be made in addition the success penalty stops earned by both Forsetti crews from the last race at Oulton Park. It will be entertaining!!

Changes made within the AMR ranks ahead of SRO Americas visit to Sebring next weekend

Friday, April 26, 2024

There’s been a few changes – as in additions and subtractions within the SRO America trilogy of series as they all head to their next round of the season at Sebring next weekend.

Starting off in Sonoma at the beginning of April, the amateur only GT America Series featured five Aston Martin Racing GT3 and GT4 crews, the sister GT4 America Series had three AMR GT4’s and the headlining GT World Challenge America Series just one Aston Martin Racing GT3.

Since then, some got in some extra race mileage at the stand-alone GT America race at Long Beach California last weekend but in the meantime, others have re-evaluated their season strategy.

What remains the same is within GT4 America as just three Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 crews make up part of the expected twenty-nine car line up for their two one-hour races over the bumps of Sebring International Raceway. The #13 Flying Lizard AMR of Todd Parriott and Tom Dyer is again joined by the pair of Heart of Racing Astons for Gray Newell/Roman De Angelis within the #24 Pro-Am entry and Hannah Grisham and Hannah Greenemeir aboard their #26 Am Class car. These cars are still the older generation 17A variants.

In GT America, we see a one car drop in AMR numbers as Todd Coleman chooses not to contest this round after a 50/50 debut at Long Beach last weekend. Jason Bell is again the solo new 2024 AMR Vantage GT3 entry with his #2 Flying Lizard prepared car whilst Tim Savage is back with his older 16A variant #007 Prosport Competition prepared Vantage GT3 having skipped Long Beach.

Then in GT4, it’s a return for each of the #13 Flying Lizard car of Parriott and the #25 Heart of Racing car of Newell.

The biggest AMR news comes from the GT World Challenge America Series where not does just Elias Sabo return with his new 2024 #8 Flying Lizard Vantage GT3 entry like that at Sonoma but now stablemate Bell comes to the top table as he enters his #2 car alongside AMR factory driver Henrique Chaves.

Chaves has already had dealings with the Flying Lizard team after they converted Sabo’s 16A GT3 platform to the new Evo model where he helped them with set up and testing prior to the season opener at Sonoma.

More Aston Martins (hopefully) this time as ELMS and LMC reach Paul Ricard next week

Friday, April 26, 2024

As next weekend’s events is such a busy one with at least nine series running with Aston Martin Racing powered teams amongst them, we thought that we would try and get ahead of ourselves a little bit.

With the World Endurance Championship having ran their second round of the season last weekend from Imola, next weekend sees the two ACO rules European Le Mans Series and Le Mans Cup Series do likewise, this time from Paul Ricard in France.

This year running near identical LMGT3 based cars of course sees the Racing Spirit of Leman and Grid Motorsport by TF return to the ELMS series again after their season opener from Barcelona two weeks ago where the #59 RSoL car of Derek DeBoer, Valentin Hasse-Clot and Casper Stevenson just pipped the TF Sport prepared #97 car of Martin Berry Lorcan Hanafin and Jonny Adam in the LMGT3 class but only in disappointing mid-table positions of P6 and P7 respectively out of a class grid size of eleven cars.

This second round will of course see the request success ballast applied to the previous podium finishes and will Paul Ricard being very much a speed circuit, the two Aston Martins will need every KPH available to them if either crew is to make up upon their points deficit within this six-round season.

This week’s provisional entry list details no changes to either AMR and hopefully (yes, there is still a lot of hoping going about) that the #97 car is now fully repaired after its Prologue shunt and a loan car from the Comtoyou team is no longer required.

Supporting the ELMS again will be the Le Mans Cup Series and this time there are TWO Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 listed from the Blackthorn AMR team.

Missing from both the entry list and the grid last time out in Spain, a curiously imposed fine for the team’s non-attendance at least put some hope that they might arrive later in the season and stating that their new 2024 Vantage GT3’s had not yet been delivered (true of course as they were running their two AMR Vantage GT3s in 16A format at the opening round of the British GT Championship over the Easter weekend at Oulton Park), successful delivery of two upgrade kits to the team has proved that point.

This weekend’s third round of the British GT Championship from Silverstone will be the first competitive run out for both the Blackthorn cars in 2024 format although one crew for Le Mans Cup is still to be listed as just team boss Claude Bovet and Team Manager David McDonald are listed – a change to the original full season entry list published by the series.

Comtoyou Racing confirm a three car GT World Challenge Sprint commitment at Brands Hatch in early May

Friday, April 26, 2024

Having entered four Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crews at the opening round of the GT World Challenge Endurance Cup from Paul Ricard at the start of the month, next month will see the Belgium based team enter three such cars into the opening round of the Sprint Series from Brands Hatch.

Fresh to the AMR brand in 2024, the Comtoyou team has restored the Aston Martin connection with both SRO Europe series, something that hasn’t been seen since the Garage 59 days of 2021 and the R-Motorsport days of 2019 before that.

Today’s confirmation from the team sees them enter three cars for the May Bank Holiday weekend visit to Brands Hatch with entries again based across the available classes with some familiar Endurance Cup drivers amongst them.

Their #007 Pro class entry will be with a driver pairing of Nicolas Baert and AMR works driver and resigning Sprint Cup Champion Mattia Drudi whilst their #21 Gold Cup entry will figure between Belgian Matisse Lismont alongside Brit James Jakes whilst their third car will be there primarily for experience.

GT4 European Series Pro-Am runner up Dante Rappange will be racing a GT3 for the first time alongside that of Charles Clark for this opening round at Brands as long-term co-driver, Lorens Lecertua finds himself otherwise indisposed for this May opener but will take over from Clark from the second round onwards.

These three cars will be the sole Aston Martins entered and will line up as part of a twenty-five strong grid with eleven cars featuring within the Pro class, five in Gold and nine in the ever ultra-competitive silver class.

Lower numbers but finer AMR quality as ADAC GT Masters and GT4 Germany kicks off at Oschersleben this weekend

Thursday, April 25, 2024

Five years since we last saw the Aston Martin Racing brand represented within the ADAC GT Masters Series with Prosport Performance as it was then (now Prosport Racing), this weekend we see the Walkenhorst Motorsport team rekindle that relationship as they enter two of their new 2024 Vantage GT3’s.

Back then, we saw the name of Mike David Ortmann coming to the forefront of the supporting ADAC GT4 Germany Series and at this weekend’s opening from Oschersleben, we see David Ortmann part of the Walkenhorst GT3 assault.

Partnering multiple series racer Denis Bulatov aboard the #34 car, they will come into this weekend’s two race format with American Chandler Hull alongside former Doer Motorsport ADAC GT4 Germany racer Nico Hantke aboard the #35 car.

Just sixteen GT3 entries are listed for this first round of a six-round season.

Like the GT Masters above, the ADAC GT4 Germany Series has also seen a downturn on entry numbers overall and from the Aston Martin Racing stable as this weekend the AMR brand is represented by just one crew.

What this series lacks in numbers, sees the #55 ooze in quality after the East Side Motorsport team entered into a partnership of their own with German racing powerhouse Zakspeed to come up with a driver pairing of Jan Marschalkowski and Phillip Gogollok within the #55 car.

One of twenty-four entries for this weekend’s opener, the GT4 Germany Series has never disappointed in competitive racing.

Five new Aston Martins expected at British GTs Silverstone 500 this weekend

Wednesday, April 24, 2024

It appears that there will be new cars all round for the first time this weekend as the five Aston Martin Racing powered crews descend upon the home of British motor racing at Silverstone for the British GT Championship’s blue ribband event.

Having opened their 2024 season four weeks ago with their customary easter weekend visit to Oulton Park for the opening two sprint races of the year, only the Beechdean AMR and Forsetti Motorsport teams were endowed with the latest iterations of the AMR Vantage GT3 and GT4 as the Blackthorn Motorsport team had to ‘made do’ with the former 16A version.

News from Blackthorn’s Jonny Adam today would suggest that both his #87 Pro-Am classed car that he shares with Giacomo Petrobelli and its sister Silver-Am classed #10 car that is shared by both Matt Topham and Josh Rowledge will this time be the all new 2024 platforms.

Whilst the #10 was in the guise of the new 2024 platform at the Championship’s media day back in March, a first lap crash for Rowledge put paid to that idea as they had to revert to the previous iteration as parts from the Prodrive factory were still at a premium. It is expected that both cars will be conversions rather than new cars from the showroom.

Whilst the #87 crew had to put up with unfamiliarity at the Cheshire circuit for the Italian driver, they posted P9 and P10 finishes in class by the end of the Bank Holiday weekend whilst the #10 had to contend with further damage from earlier an earlier incident for Topham that left the car unable to Qualifying for either race, eventually finishing P7 in class in race one before another incident for Topham in Race 2 ended their participation as well as causing an extended Safety Car intervention.

Hopefully, all is now repaired and lessons have now been learned so this this weekend’s endurance round from Silverstone can be a positive one for all at Blackthorn.

The #97 Beechdean AMR crew of Andrew Howard and Jessica Hawkins also ran with a whole lot of new at Oulton Park with their new Vantage GT3, Hawkins new to the Champiosnhip and all new to the class.

Whilst seat time had been something of a premium for the Aston Martin F1 Academy Ambassador, Hawkins had been seen testing the #97 car under Darren Turner’s tutelage at Silverstone prior to her rushing off to recent F1 duties in China. Hopefully, these long-haul flights back and forth will not affect her endurance too much this weekend.

Despite all this new, the Silver-Am duo were still able to deliver the best AMR GT3 result of the opening weekend with P6 and P5 class finishes.

The best results, however, came again from the Forsetti Motorsport team and their two new Vantage GT4 crews of Jamie Day/Mikey Porter and Marc Warren/Will Orton as both delivered two podium finishes apiece last time out.

The Silver class duo of Day and Porter in the #7 car brought home two class wins from their race weekend whilst the Pro-Am pairing of Warren and Orton brought home a brace of P2 finishes in class for their efforts after two weather and safety car impacted races. All in all, a great British GT debut for themselves and the new Aston Martin.

Soon the now extended and capacity grid (for Silverstone) of forty-three cars will be gearing up for this weekend’s blue ribband Silverstone 500 event around the Grand Prix circuit with Friday testing.

Success penalties will unfortunately come the way of Forsetti as both the #47 and #7 cars are handed pit stop time penalties of an additional 10 and 5 seconds on top of any class ballast and time for the #7 silver cup entry.

Another than that, it will be game on for all five Aston Martin Racing crews!!

D'Station Racing and EBM open their GT World Challenge Asia Series accounts in Sepang

Monday, April 22, 2024

The Japanese based D’Station Racing team had a busy time last weekend as they spread themselves between the second round of the World Endurance Championship in Italy with the opening round of the GT World Challenge Asia Series from Malaysia.

This time being able to leave their Aston Martin Racing Vantage LMGT3 crew in the capable hands of the Prodrive supplied support team at the WEC, the Japanese contingent made their way to Sepang with one of their new Vantage GT3 cars for the two opening races of the GTWC Asia Series.

Again running with team owner and team manager – Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii respectively, the D’Station team would be running their familiar green liveried #777 within the Pro-Am class whilst the Earl Bamber Motorsport entered #8 AMR Vantage GT3 of Setiawan Santosa would run solo within the Am class.

Whilst Fujii would have run a similar spec’d Vantage GT3 within the recent opening round of the Super GT Series, this would have been in at the deep end for both Hoshino and Santosa as far as race miles within the all-new Vantage were concerned and by the end of Free Practice, the #777 figured mid-way within the thirty-one strong grid and the #8 car at the foot of the table.

The great leveller in motorsport is off course rain and in Malaysia it does obviously rain at some point during the day. That was enough to split the grid in tyre choice for race one and with the events that that caused on track was enough to allow the #777 to claim a warranted P6 overall finish, P4 in class whilst the #8 car finished P29 overall and P4 in class.

A good banker race for the D’Station Racing team there but they were unable to build up that momentum during Sundays second race where they finished down in P16 overall and P8 in class whilst Santosa finished his AMR powered debut slightly higher in P28/P4.

The second round of the series is now just under three weeks ago as the cars and equipment are ferried the relatively short distance down to the Chang International Circuit in Thailand.
