AMR's latest GT4 recruit testing already ahead of 2022 plans

AMR's latest GT4 recruit testing already ahead of 2022 plans

Just one weekend after announcing their transition from Ginetta Junior racing through to GT4 racing in the British GT Championship next season had Josh Miller and R Racing up at Donington Park today sampling something of what was to come.

With the help of TF Sport and the temporary loan of what was Connor O’Brien and Patrick Kibble’s 2020 entered Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4, had Miller get some early mileage in with his new chosen stead all under the watchful eye of Phil Glew and Matt George.

Having spoken with the team, this test with TF Sport was something of a matter of convenience and information learning curve as the R Racing team develop their early knowledge of the AMR GT4 platform prior to their new chassis arriving over the winter.

Still no news on a co-driver!

TF Sport secure British GT GT4 crowns

TF Sport secure British GT GT4 crowns

Aston Martin’s Vantage GT4 clinched three more titles in the British GT Championship finale at Silverstone, ensuring that the luxury sportscar brand’s entry-level 4-litre V8 customer GT car remains unbeaten in the UK-based series since its debut in 2019.

Aston Martin Racing partner team TF Sport, and AMR Academy drivers Dan Vaughan and Jamie Caroline triumphed in the GT4 Teams’ and Drivers’ Championships with second place in class after a tough three-hour long Silverstone 500 encounter. The result – the duo’s fourth second place of the season – added to a victory at Snetterton and third place in the season-opening Oulton Park race, ensured they also finished top in the GT4 Silver Cup.

Competitive from the outset, Vaughan and Caroline waged a season-long battle with fellow AMR Academy members and team-mates Connor O’Brien and Patrick Kibble, who took two class victories, allowing the team to notch up three class wins and a total of 12 podiums through the campaign. In the end, the champions finished on 170 points with the sister TF Sport entry third on 152.5.

The Vantage GT4’s success in Britain mirrors that which it has enjoyed on the continent. In GT4 America, Flying Lizard Motorsports and drivers Michael Dinan and Robby Foley collectively won the Sprint Am Teams’ and Drivers’ titles and the SprintX Pro-Am Teams’ and Drivers’ championships.

Meanwhile in GT4 European, Aston Martin partner team AGS Events Racing lead the Team’s Championship, while AMR Academy drivers Valentin Hasse-Clot and Theo Nouet lead the Silver Drivers’ Championship. The Am Drivers’ title race is also headed by their team-mates Nicolas Gomar and Gille Vannelet. More-over, in the IMSA-run Michelin Pilot Challenge, Aston Martin leads the Constructor’s Championship while Nate Stacy, Kyle Marcelli and KohR Motorsports top the Drivers’ and Teams’ standings with two wins and three more podiums in their Vantage GT4.

TF Sport owner and team principal, Tom Ferrier said: “To claim all three titles was more than we could have asked for in such an unpredictable year. Claiming back-to-back championships is testament to every member of the team, they have all worked so hard to make this season happen. Well done to Jamie and Dan for taking the honours in their debut season – Patrick and Connor kept them on their toes throughout the whole year. We are thrilled to sign off the season as champions.”

Aston Martin Racing President David King added: “Congratulations to Tom Ferrier and TF Sport who consistently deliver outstanding results and have now won eight titles with the new Vantage in two years. The Aston Martin Vantage GT4’s incredible success both in the UK and abroad is a shining example of the car’s ultimate competitiveness and driver friendliness. From the outset we strived to ensure that our customer-based Vantage GT3 and GT4 race-cars had both championship-winning potential while also being accessible to talented amateur or junior racing drivers. This latest success shows that programme is continuing to go from strength-to-strength.”

Best of luck wishes to the two TF Sport GT4 crews ahead of tomorrows British GT finale

Best of luck wishes to the two TF Sport GT4 crews ahead of tomorrows British GT finale

Again, all the formalities are now over and it’s just the small matter of three hours of racing ahead for the thirty-seven GT3 and GT4 cars as the 2020 British GT Championship comes to an end tomorrow after the Silverstone 500.

Whilst the four Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s are of course a welcome additions to the conclusion of this most bizarre of seasons, none are involved within any Championship battle as that honour is reserved for the two TF Sport AMR Vantage GT4 cars of #97 Jamie Caroline/Dan Vaughan and #95 Patrick Kibble/Connor O’Brien who enter into one last four way battle with two other car crews for the GT4 Drivers and GT4 Silver Cup (and team) titles.

With Qualifying for tomorrows event resolved earlier this afternoon, it is the #97 that leads the way off in terms of cars with still a mathematical chance of taking either of the GT4 Class titles at tomorrows green flag lap from P2 with their sister #95 car slightly further back in P6.

Importantly for them, their main Championship contenders – the #58 HHC McLaren starts from behind both TF Sport cars in P7 and suffers the maximum additional success penalty with an extra 5 seconds over the #97 car and an extra 10 seconds over the #95 car but there remains far too many other variables for anything to be considered as given.

We wish all four drivers the best of luck.

Any more than these six Aston Martins at British GT finale?

Any more than these six Aston Martins at British GT finale?

As the British GT Championship confirmed only this week, despite the instigation of a second COVID-19 related national lockdown immediately prior to track action commencing at the final round of the season at the Silverstone 500 on Saturday, the work of the Championship, circuit and the motorsport governing body (Motorsport UK) together with the UK Government have secured this weekend’s running of the event.

Despite the previous rounds of the season that have been ran so far being at MSV owned circuits with a limited paddock attendance with restricted pre-paying fans allowed in, the British GT Championship has now been awarded Elite sports status (something that was necessary for it to continue under these current national circumstances) but that has meant that even fewer than this new ‘usually few’ number of people who may be present at the circuit this time around.

Whilst the paying fans cannot be in attendance and now many mainstream media staff also cannot be in attendance despite previous acknowledgement, we now know that the SRO sanctioned Championship can indeed produce a TV package that meets most of our needs whilst the event is in progress.

Whilst COVID and politics wreaked havoc on the Championship at the start of the year and then restricted our own enjoyment throughout the season, we do at least have the two full season TF Sport Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s of Jamie Caroline/Dan Vaughan and Connor O’Brien/Patrick Kibble very much in contention in their respective Championship hunts as they will now be joined with at least another four Aston Martins at this final round from various teams.

Sticking with TF Sport as first to announce is a Vantage GT3 car for their 2019 British GT GT4 Champion Tom Canning who will drive alongside former Blancpain GT Series racer and now bronze rated driver Giacomo Petrobelli. For Canning, this is very much of a race mileage exercise after his own British GT GT3 season with GT3 Champion Graham Davidson fell away at the start of the year because of COVID-19 but he has has now been named as part of the Oman Racing with TF Sport’s Asian Le Mans GT3 squad with Omani racer Ahmad Al Harty and Le Mans GTE Am Champion Jonny Adam.

Later, we had the Garage 59 team also confirm that one of their AMR Vantage GT3’s will be present at the end of season endurance with part of their GT World Challenge Europe and Spa 24 runners up crew of Alex West and Jonny Adam behind the wheel for what will be the Swedish drivers first encounter within the UK’s national GT series.

Being a shrewd business man who doesn’t spend the sums of money that he does on motorsport lightly, this encounter for him will be a calculated move for him (and the team) for yet more race mileage ahead of the GT World Challenge Europe finale at Paul Ricard in two weeks time (if indeed that race now goes ahead at all after France has also now entered into a further period of national lockdown). Their #188 Pro-Am car that they share with Chris Goodwin in that Series are tied equal first in their Championship standings after their P3 finish at Spa Francorchamps two weeks ago.

When challenged as to whether this event was a pre-cursor to a future full season entry for him and the team – well the answer was very much nearer no than yes!!

The final AMR Vantage GT3 that we expect to see is the next to new Ultimate Speed Racing machine for drivers Mike Brown and Matt Manderson. Having taken collection of the car in early September, the team entered both the GT Cup and British GT events at Donington Park later that month where the duo enjoyed some silverware success getting to know their new car in the former Championship.

The team have also been out at Silverstone, like many of the full season entries, testing their cars and drivers under the guise of a prestige car track day events where we have seen that their ‘fresh out the showroom white’ colour scheme has now been replaced with a silver livery backdrop.

Finally, but certainly by no means least we have had only today seen that the Newbridge Motorsport team have had their AMR Vantage GT4 confirmed as a further entry into the Silverstone 500 for drivers Alex Toth-Jones and James Dorlin.

Toth-Jones was part of the Academy Motorsport team that ran two great silver liveried Astons in the Championship last year where he was partnered by Will Moore whilst Dorlin raced a Toleman Motorsport McLaren 570s in the same season.

Whilst Toth-Jones was linked with a GT3 drive within the Beechdean AMR Team at the turn of the year, he and Dorlin alike both swapped to the Porsche Sprint Challenge Series for the 2020 season with the former also seen racing aboard this Aston Martin within the GT Cup Championship with some success.

The full entry list is expected tomorrow so we will have to wait until then to see whether or not Andrew Howard and his Beechdean AMR Vantage GT3 will make any further appearance in the Championship after his and Jonny Adam's last appearance at Brands Hatch at the end of August.

All to race for as TF Sport look to defend their British GT GT4 Championship credentials

All to race for as TF Sport look to defend their British GT GT4 Championship credentials

With the final round of the 2020 British GT Championship this weekend at Silverstone now having been given the green light from the Government, we can now look forward to what that final event means in terms of Championship battles.

Forget for a moment the plethora of top names, teams and cars being dropped into the hat in time for this final three hour bash around the Northamptonshire circuit that is the Silverstone 500, as they (although much welcomed additions to the ‘party’) are just one off entries to the Championship. With also the national ‘lockdown 2’ saga grabbing all the news headlines so far this week – it is the two, full season entries from TF Sport that warrant all of our attention as they have the small matter of the GT4 Silver Cup, GT4 Drivers and GT4 Teams Championship titles to settle!

It is still the TF Sport #97 crew of Jamie Caroline and Dan Vaughan who feature prominently at the top of both the GT4 Silver Cup and GT4 Drivers tables going into this final round having enjoyed a consistently high and steady points scoring approach across the eight races so far to lead each Championship by just a handful of points. Their sister #95 car of Connor O’Brien and Patrick Kibble have had their own multiple moments on the podium but have also suffered from adversity and other peoples accidents like at Oulton Park and that unfortunate ‘blue on blue’ incident at Brands Hatch which, as a result places them with the most to do out of the two bright yellow TF Sport Aston Martin Racing runners as they lie twenty points down the Silver Cup and thirteen points down in the GT4 Drivers table to their stable mates.

The TF Sport cars main rivals co-incidentally enough involve two former AMR drivers from 2019 in the form of Patrik Matthiessen with Jordan Collard aboard the #58 HHC McLaren and Matt Cowley aboard the Academy Motorsport Ford Mustang although Cowley would need something nearing a minor miracle in the form of multiple DNF’s for the cars ahead of him in the Championships for him to overcome his larger points deficits - but then stranger things have happened before!

In the GT4 Team Championship, it’s a straight forward two horse race between both TF Sport and the HHC McLaren team with just twenty seven points between them in the favour of Tom Ferrier’s squad and with this final round paying out the larger 37.5 points to the winning cars in each class – it is certainly still all to race for on Sunday.

With the trails of tribulations of what has been a very difficult season for all of the full season runners, what first appeared to be a total disaster for the Championship back in April has in fact produced another exceptional season of racing with action and drama never too far away, all of which (in an average season at least) that would have taken us to yet another #DoningtonDecider. This time around, everything wraps up this weekend from Middle England where things will be (hopefully) not too chilly for the few allowed to be there.

Obviously, we wish both TF Sport cars well at the final race but we will have to wait until Wednesday to see just who else they will be sharing the track with!!

Two double podiums for TF Sport set up British GT finale nicely

Two double podiums for TF Sport set up British GT finale nicely

Two double podiums for TF Sports Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 crew’s at this weekend’s penultimate round of the 2020 British GT Championship from a rain-soaked Snetterton has set things up for a cracking finale at Silverstone in a month’s time.

Having picked themselves up from the unfortunate incident at the end of the Brands Hatch round, the #97 and #95 crews of Jamie Caroline/Dan Vaughan and Connor O’Brien/Patrick Kibble took what they could from the Championship’s second visit to Donington Park two weeks ago to go into this weekend’s double header level on points at the top of the GT4 Drivers Championship.

Mother Nature certainly wasn’t going to be kind with both one-hour races on Sunday being run upon a track best rated as flooded in places in race 1 through the very wet in race 2 but then, that just added to the spectacle that is GT racing.

With the #97 car of Vaughan starting in P3 just ahead of the #95 car of O’Brien in P4, a delayed Race 1 had to be started from behind of the Safety Car as visibility into turn 1 would be a real issue. Fortunately, all made it around the first flying lap with the GT4 field remaining in Qualifying order until the GT4 pit window opened at the half hour mark. Pitting early and with only the #95 affected by a success penalty from Donington Park, Caroline emerged at the head of the GT4 field after the stop with both HHC McLaren 570s cars sandwiched between him and Kibble now in the #95 in P4.

As Caroline gapped himself to those behind, Kibble had just ten minutes to reduce the four second gap to the McLaren’s ahead, taking his time before eventually forcing his way through of the #57 on the inside at Agostini to claim P3 in class with just three minutes remaining.

Race 1 would end with the #97 claiming P1 overall in class with the #95 in P3 just behind the #58 HHC McLaren.

Race 2 would again be delayed from earlier episodes on track as Kibble started ahead of Caroline on track from P3 although this time, both cars would have success penalties during their stop from race 1.

This time with a more customary starting procedure, early confidence from Kibble saw him take the class lead from the Ford Mustang on the first lap whilst Caroline took two more laps to do the same and by then, the #95 was four seconds up the round.

As expended, both TF Sport cars ran late into their available pit stop window as they tried to make up for the additional 5 and 10 seconds of extra time each car would have to have. Obviously, that lead to a switch is track position by the time the pit stops were over as Vaughan now came out P2 in GT4 but behind the only Pro-Am GT4 to effectively lead their main Silver Cup race.

Whereas the Pro-Am car ahead would be of any concern, a charging 58 HHC McLaren coming up fast from behind would be as Jordan Collard first overtook O’Brien for position before not long after claimed P1 in class with a simple performance overtake past Vaughan on the pit straight. Results for Race 2 would give the #97 a P2 finish and the #95 a P3 finish.

With those results all in place, that gives the top five crews in GT4 a mathematical chance of lifting the GT4 Drivers Championship at the end of next month’s three-hour finale from Silverstone. Such are the scores in the GT4 Drivers, GT4 Silver Cup and GT4 Teams Championship that literally anything could happen!!!!

No pressure for anyone (!!!) but certainly not one to be missed.

TF Sport needing to extend their GT4 lead at a rain soaked Snetterton this weekend

TF Sport needing to extend their GT4 lead at a rain soaked Snetterton this weekend

Having endured a sodden first day of track activities ahead of the penultimate round of the 2020 British GT Championship from Snetterton this weekend, it appears that the twenty-two cars have another rain-soaked day to look forward to tomorrow during the two – one hour races.

With the Beechdean AMR Aston Martin Racing GT3 not available to make the trip to Norfolk this week, that has left just the two full season TF Sport AMR Vantage GT4’s to look out for this weekend as both the #95 and #97 cars of Connor O’Brien/Patrick Kibble and Jamie Caroline/Dan Vaughan tie at the head of the GT4 Drivers Championship after the six rounds so far raced.

Heavy rain again on the Met Office weather forecast from about midday onwards, it certainly looks that those hardy fans who have bought their tickets in advance will do well to keep themselves both dry and warm as they watch the GT races that start at both 10:15 and 13:10hrs local.

Having completed the necessary Pro and Am drivers Qualifying sessions today will see Vaughan start Race 1 from P3 in class and just ahead of stablemate O’Conner whilst in Race 2, the #95 of Kibble will start two places ahead of the #97 in P3.

With five drivers less than ten points behind the two TF Sport crews, Snetterton and its expected foul weather leave little room for error before the Championship moves onto its finale at Silverstone next month.

As usual, both races will be streamed live via the Series media channels

Sad news from British GT

Sad news from British GT

Well, today sees an unfortunate double whammy of bad news for fans of the British GT Championship!

Firstly, we have confirmation from the race organisers that the final round of the revised 2020 Intelligent Money British GT Championship at Silverstone in November will (after all) be from behind closed doors. Without giving any specific reason as to why rounds can be held at MSV Circuits but not at the ‘home’ of British motor racing, the Championship issued this statement

The Intelligent Money British GT Championship's blue riband Silverstone 500 event will be held behind closed doors on November 7/8.

As one of the UK’s major sports venues, Silverstone has been working to the guidance of the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the safe return of spectators. The circuit has been unable to host fans since March but had been working hard behind the scenes to run British GT’s event with public. Both parties have waited for as long as possible to make this announcement but must now concede it is not possible to hold the event with spectators.

This weekend’s round at Snetterton will go ahead as planned with fans in attendance, while all three hours of the Silverstone 500 will be streamed live, free and unrestricted across British GT and SRO’s social media platforms.

That news comes in addition to some other news also confirmed by the Championship and the team that this weekend’s penultimate round of the season from Snetterton will now NOT include the Beechdean Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3 of Andrew Howard and Valentin Hasse-Clot.

This leaves the two Championship contending TF Sport Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s as again the sole AMR representatives for the two one hour races in Norfolk. With more wintery weather in store going into the weekend, it may well become survival of the fittest in Norfolk on Sunday.

TF Sport's recovery drive secures another podium in British GT

TF Sport's recovery drive secures another podium in British GT

As the main contingent of Tom Ferrier’s team were busy guiding their Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE to class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, TF Sport still had two AMR Vantage GT4’s to chaperone to class success at the sixth round of the British GT Championship from Donington Park.

Running another change in format for this second visit to the Leicestershire circuit this year, Sunday saw the Championship run a three-hour race for the twenty four car grid that also included the Ultimate Speed AMR Vantage GT3 for the first time.

Having Qualified in P5 with the #95 Connor O’Brien/Patrick Kibble car and P7 for the #97 Jamie Caroline/Dan Vaughan car, the race was thrown into immediate confusion with two spinning GT3 cars at Turn 1-lap 1 which brought out the Safety Car. Two of only a handful of cars that elected to pit straight away to swap over to their ‘faster’ drivers it did appear that that was a bad call as they found themselves being held back at the pit exit as the race went back to green.

For the next two and a half hours, it was simply a case of each driver pushing as hard as they could to make up for a longer fuel stop that they would ultimately have to make to cover off their first stop. Kibble was the faster of the two as he broke the gap to Caroline to a tune of about 10 seconds at the halfway mark.

At the top of the final hour, the rest of the grid had made their final stops and it was only a case of where the then GT4 class leading Aston would come out as O’Brien again passed the car over to Kibble which they eventually did with just thirty minutes remaining.

Having not had to serve any additional pit stop penalty beyond that of their Silver Cup status, the #95 car would still come out behind the Academy Ford Mustang and the #58 HHC McLaren to claim the final step of the GT4 podium. The #97 crew would also recover some decent points towards their Championship aspirations with a distant P4 finish – one lap down to the top three.

The Championship now moves onto Snetterton next month where we should be again seeing the Beechdean AMR Vantage GT3 of Andrew Howard and Valentin Hasse-Clot.

TF Sport fightback needed after issues in Qualifying

TF Sport fightback needed after issues in Qualifying

After previous rounds with clear early domination, both of TF Sport’s Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s will have some catch up to do in tomorrow’s British GT Championship round from Donington.

Having not had the best of race endings last time out at Brands Hatch when the #95 and #97 cars made contact with each of going into the final lap of the race left both the #95 in the gravel at Paddock Hill Bend and the #97 demoted down from a podium position for that earlier contact, both crews will be looking to make amends for that situation as Championship standings become all too important.

By the end of Free Practice, the #95 car of Connor O’Brien and Patrick Kibble was the highest placed AMR in P3 in class with the #97 car of Jamie Caroline and Dan Vaughan four places further back.

Despite his fastest lap in his Qualifying session for Kibble to add to the earlier lap time of O’Brien would see that #95 Qualify in P3 and behind the Academy Ford Mustang and the HHC McLaren.

Deletion of his fastest laps for Caroline due to track limits and an untimely excursion off circuit and into the gravel due to someone else’s oil left the #97 with a little bit more to do on Sunday as they will be starting the three-hour race from P5.

In GT3, the Ultimate Speed AMR Vantage GT3 of Matt Manderson and Mike Brown would see them start their first BGT race aboard their brand-new AMR car from P14 overall having only entered one competitive lap time from the two drivers.

The race shall begin at 12:45.

Three Aston Martins again for Round 6 British GT Championship

Three Aston Martins again for Round 6 British GT Championship

As the world will be looking on at the track action that will be then well underway at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Aston Martin Racing Partner Team TF Sport will be one team splitting their racing duties between both France and at the sixth round of the British GT Championship from Donington Park this weekend.

With this unfortunate CV-19 related clash of dates being one of the reasons why the teams Oman Racing British GT GT3 entry for Ahmad Al Harthy and Jonny Adam was sidelined during the lockdown period, TF Sport have so been the driving force in the GT4 Class with both their #95 and #97 cars being front running material from the start.

This weekends second visit of the season to the Leicestershire circuit will this time feature a three hour race for the twenty four car entry on Sunday afternoon having already competed in both a two hour and a one hour race last time out at the circuit in mid August.

Again confirmed within the 14 GT3 and 10 GT4 car entry will be the two Silver Cup entered #95 AMR Vantage GT4 of Patrick Kibble and Connor O'Brien and the #97 AMR Vantage GT4 of Jamie Caroline and Dan Vaughan. Last time out at Brands Hatch, both cars dominated the earlier track sessions before contact was made between both in the closing stages of the race leaving the #95 stuck in the gravel at Paddock Hill Bend and the #97 suffering from a post race time penalty for causing a collision - both ultimately leaving both cars with fewer points than they perhaps should and could have otherwise had.

That error cost the Caroline/Vaughan their top place in the overall GT4 Championship table although they did hang on to the GT4 Silver Cup lead. No doubt and prior to his journey over to Le Mans, team boss Tom Ferrier will have read these guys 'the riot act' and reminding them of rule no.1 in racing of never taking out you team mate!!

Joining them for the first time in 2020 at least is the brand new #26 Ultimate Speed Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3 of Mike Brown and Matt Manderson after their successful shakedown cum race in the car in the four race GT Cup event at Donington Park last weekend.

Two different Championships indeed but a quick look at the timing board showed that this duo were up with the lap times being entered by the front end GT3 cars during the two hour British GT race from Donington Park in August so, depending upon Balance of Performance, it could be interesting!

As usual, Free Practice proceeds Qualifying on Saturday before the start of the race at 12:45 on Sunday.
