Britcar at Silverstone for 120min Round four with up to four Aston Martins

Four Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s of both normally aspirated and new turbo charged iterations of the platform are due to compete at the fourth round of the Britcar Endurance Championship at Silverstone on Saturday.

Amongst the so far full season entry from the #68 Team Brit car of Aaron Morgan and Bobby Trundley again features the #38 Triple M Automotive entry for Dale and Mark Albutt as well as the #72 Chris Murphy and his new 2019 specification of car. They will also be joined by Mike Coker and his #73 Valour Racing AMR on this week’s provisional entry list for Saturday’s two-hour race.


The #68 Team Brit crew presently sit in fifth place in the Endurance Championship after podium finishes at all the previous rounds so far which is a remarkable achievement considering their own set of personal circumstances that motor racing is helping them (and others with the team’s multi-class racing programme) to overcome.

Qualifying is due to take place just before noon with the start of the 120 minute race being flagged off at 15:55hrs

Last competitive track run out before the Spa 24 for Garage 59

It’s been something of a hectic three-week window for the Garage 59 Aston Martin Racing team coming off the back of the second round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup at Zandvoort, through a two-day official test at Spa Francorchamps ahead of the Total Spa 24 and into the third round of the Sprint Cup this weekend in Misano.

The two races in Holland were something of a mixed bag for the teams Pro-Am and Silver Cup entries as the #188 Pro-Am car of Alex West and Jonny Adam claimed a P4 finish in Race whilst the #159 Silver Cup car of Tuomas Tujula and Nicolai Kjaergaard suffered from race ending damage just after their stop after great earlier work from the Finn.

Sunday’s second hour long race was slightly better as the #159 managed a finish albeit down in P8 in class but the #188 car did secure a P2 podium finish in class to keep their Championship hopes alive as they move into P4 in the Class, eleven and a half points behind the leaders.

This weekend sees a record breaking 29 car entry – sadly no more Aston Martins but more than enough ‘equally’ balanced machinery to provide another great racing spectacle. After that - its next stop Spa!!

Strong return to British GT for TF Sport

Multiple British GT champions TF Sport, made their series return last weekend at the championship’s blue riband event, the Silverstone 500. Giacomo Petrobelli and Charlie Eastwood narrowly missed out on a podium finish and scored a closely fought fourth, with Bonamy Grimes and Marco Sørensen taking a strong seventh place.

The duo kickstarted the weekend by running in the top three during free practice and this pace continued into qualifying for the #38 of Petrobelli and Eastwood. The pairing’s aggregate time was good enough for a front row starting spot, however an on-track infringement from Giacomo meant they would start the three-hour race from P4.


Bonamy’s session wasn’t so fruitful, as the Am was unable to get a clean lap in #95, which didn’t reflect his true pace and despite Sørensen’s best efforts, the #95 placed tenth in Pro Am.

A clean start by both Bronze drivers saw them soon progress up the order and with Petrobelli regularly running as the fastest driver on track during his stint, he was soon into second position before handing over to Eastwood.

Some contact to the #95’s door, from the Team Parker Porsche before his stop, delayed Grimes’ in exiting his Vantage and added extra time in the pits. But Sørensen was soon on a mission to make up the lost track positions and enjoyed a long first stint, ultimately getting the Aston up to fifth before handing back to Bonamy.


Although a great strategy was executed by the team, and the drivers stints were flawless, the pace of the leaders was something Eastwood and Petrobelli couldn’t overcome, and took the flag in fourth, with the sister car following in seventh.

The team will .return to the championship again during the 2021 season, with details to be announced soon

GT Cup back at Oulton Park with two AMR GT4 runners again

Never letting up in the race diary comes the fourth round of the GT Cup Championship this weekend from Oulton Park with another packed grid of multi-class GT cars.

Looking through the provisional entry list of over thirty cars, there again features two Aston Martin Racing GT4 cars from each of the Feathers Motorsport and Century Motorsport teams as the third expected car this time features on the entry list for the next round of the Britcar Endurance Championship from Silverstone on the same day.

The #15 Century car continues with their line up of David Holloway and Bradley Ellis as they have done all season so far after Adam Hatfield was unable to race from the opening round at Donington Park. Having claimed an opening P3 podium at Donington Park in early April, they have been tantalisingly close for further silverware at all of the subsequent rounds at Brands Hatch and Snetterton so they will be looking for something more in Cheshire.

They will be joined by the #82 Feathers Motorsport Aston of James Guess and a returning Tom Canning who again deputises for Darren Turner who won his first British GT race at the weekend with another customer team of his.

These guys had to wait nearly a week for their P2 finish in the final race at Snetterton at the start of the month to be changed to a class win after the original winner was found to be ‘contrary to Regulations’ but at least that helped to keep Guess’s trophy haul per round alive.

There still appears to be no sight or sound either from the Deranged AMR team after their dramatic arrival and achievements at the opening round from Donington Park!

This weekend features just two races on Saturday – a one hour race before lunch followed by a 40-minute race in the afternoon.

UPDATED - Back to Watkins Glen for IMSA's second visit to the picturesque circuit in NY State

Well, if six hours of Watkins Glen wasn’t enough for you last weekend with the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship an then another four hours of the supporting Michelin Pilot Challenge Series, then this weekend we get to watch it all over again as many of those cars return for another bout of racing from the picturesque racetrack in New York State.

Not six and four hour races this time, as the IMSA governing body have taken this opportunity to stay at a racetrack for consecutive weekends in lieu of their intended round from the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the ‘good old’ COVID-19 travel restrictions problem of old.


Whilst it's obviously sad to see CTMP miss out again with the Championship, the racing produced last weekend at the Watkins Glen was second to none in terms of excitement and anticipation.

From those two races we saw the #23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin racing crew of Roman de Angelis, Ross Gunn and Ian James come through to take a late P3 finish at the end of their six hours to go with their race win of last time out at Detroit. On top of that, the aptly numbered #23 Notlad Racing AMR Vantage GT4 of Pat Gallagher and Stevan McAleer produced a near dominating performance to claim their first overall race win in an IMSA series at only their second time of asking after the Daytona opener this year.


This time around, the #23 Heart of Racing car reverts back to their two-driver line up of De Angelis and Gunn for this event whilst in the Michelin Pilot Challenge 120 race, we will this time only be seeing the #7 Volt Racing car of Alan Brynjolfsson/Trent Hindman and the #09 Stoner Car Care Aston of Ramin Abdolvahabi/Rob Ecklin.


Both races take place this FRIDAY.

UPDATE - The AMR Vantage GT4 has since been hit by a 30kg increase in base weight since the cars race win in the four hour event last week!

Heart of Racing claim North Island Endurance Series win at a rain soaked Pokekohe

Congratulations to the Heart of Racing Aston Martin Racing team down under in New Zealand last weekend for doing what was necessary for their #52 AMR Vantage GT3 to secure the North Island Endurance Series crown for the first time.

Arriving at Pukekohe Park for the weekend’s final three-hour race, Alex Riberas and Darren Kelly were in points arrears to the #22 Audi R8 of Neil Foster and Jonny Reid but with the #22 car not competing at the final round, a race win was still essential for the team on count back if they didn’t!


Throughout a rain sodden race meeting, it was only fitting that former National Drift Champion Kelly secured his first pole position in the GT3 in such trying conditions having come so close last time out.

What followed next was almost a ‘demonstration run’ of prowess as the #52 car posted purple sector after sector as the laps passed by yet the rain continued to fall.

For the #111 GT-B class AMR Vantage GT8R of Steve Harrison and Shane Merlin however, their race would end before the end of the first hour as a long brake pedal forced them into the garage for lengthy repairs. They did finally make it back out on track towards the end but that was by then just a formality. 


With their own points situation, that should have been enough for them to claim the GT-B Class title after three previous podiums (but that's yet TBC).

As the rain appeared to lessen, the #52 car eventually took the chequered flag with a three lap margin to secure not just another rave win in the Series but also to claim the overall and GT-A class wins as well. That goes nicely with their South Island Endurance Series win of 2020 – something that the team will be defending as that series kicks off in September.

Second time lucky for the #09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin at the Glen this weekend

The final numbers do not tell the story for the Stoner Car Care Racing fielded by Automatic Racing team in Saturday’s Michelin Pilot Challenge Tioga Downs Casino Resort 240 at Watkins Glen International.

The box score will show that the team took the checkered flag in 16th position after holding the early lead but with a second race at Watkins Glen only days away, the team knows that its No. 09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin Vantage GT4 has the pace to contend at the historic 3.4-mile road course.

Rob Ecklin Jr., Ramin Abdolvahabi and Brandon Kidd each had solid stints through the four-hour, 104-lap race but it was hometown hero Kidd who put the spotlight on the Aston Martin, leading 11 laps in the first half of the race. In the end, untimely yellows, for an astounding one hour and 33 minutes, dented the team’s strategy and put the car a lap down to end the race.


Kidd took the green flag and just as he was settling into a rhythm, separate incidents involving four cars led to a lengthy yellow for clean-up. Returning to green just after the 30-minute mark, Kidd wasted no time in making a move toward the front, grabbing sixth on the restart and pacing among the leaders. Back to eighth after a pit stop for fuel and left side tires, he worked his way into fourth before a full course yellow sent the leaders into pit lane, and Kidd took the restart at the front of the field.

With eyes forward, Kidd held his ground and opened a gap to the chasing field behind. Showing impressive speed, especially on the same right-side tires he’d begun the race on, Kidd led 11 laps before coming to pit lane for four tires, fuel and a change to Abdolvahabi.

“The car was really good, so it was really a matter of hitting my marks,” said Kidd. “You have to be really patient. When you can see that you’re faster than the other cars, you just have to run your own race and make a move when you can. I made most of my moves coming out of the toe of the Boot – just nail the exit, dropped it into third and get back on the gas to get by.


“I was thinking about defending on the restart but our spotter (veteran Barry Waddell) said don’t do it. I trusted him and he was right. I focused forward, kept the gap and held the position – with pretty old tires. I’m glad so many people were here to watch, lots of family and friends. I’m sure they’re excited, I haven’t checked my phone yet!”

Abdolvahabi took to the fray back in the pack, focusing on speed and working his way forward. But the Aston Martin’s cooling system failed early in his stint, and with ambient temperatures in the high 90s, Abdolvahabi fought hard to hold his position. He handed the wheel to Ecklin with just under 90 minutes remaining.

“I just overheated in the car, which made it tough,” said Abdolvahabi. “But the car has a lot of pace coming into the double-header that includes next weekend. We know the car and we know what the car is capable of. Having back-to-back races also helps with your strategy and driving habits. The pace that the car has, we are looking forward to next weekend for sure."

Ecklin worked hard, but with the team on an off-sequence strategy, the yellows didn’t play in their favor. He took the checkered flag in 16th position, a lap down to the leaders.


"I've been in worse heat, but that was tough,” said Ecklin. “Luckily, I had two yellows and I was able to cycle the cooling system. We were a lap down when I went out and we weren't able to get that back, and because of that we were running in the lapped cars. But Brandon ran an incredible stint with great lap times and we had great race strategy – it's just a shame we couldn't continue that. I thought the car was performing well so it will be great to have back-to-back races and come back next weekend to get back after it."

Automatic Racing team manager David Russell was pleased with the car’s pace, especially with the second Watkins Glen event just days away.

“At the end of the day, we found the right setup up on the car that really complimented the driving team,” said Russell. “It was hot in the car, so it was cooking the drivers, but we’ve got that figured out as well. The car had really good pace so we have a lot of things to build on for next weekend. It’s good continuity, to come right back here in a few days.”


The Sahlen’s 120 takes the green flag Friday at 2:35 p.m

A day that belonged to Newbridge Motorsport by the end of the Silverstone 500

The second round of the 2021 British GT Championship again didn’t fail to entertain as a combined GT3 and GT4 grid of thirty cars embarked on what was the 10th anniversary of the #Silverstone500 around the home of British motor racing.

For this round only (or at least so far announced) we were blessed with the attendance of four Aston Martin Racing Partner team cars – the full season #7 Beechdean AMR Vantage GT3 entry for Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam and the first appearance of the now full season #27 Newbridge Motorsport Vantage GT4 entry for drivers Matt Topham and Darren Turner. These two cars were then supported by a pair of guesting TF Sport Vantage GT3’s for drivers Giacomo Petrobelli/Charlie Eastwood (#38) and Bonamy Grimes/Marco Sorensen (#95).


After Saturday’s Qualifying, the #38 car was dropped down two places from its original P2 slot to P4 for apparently crossing the blend line on pit out during the session. Also a change from the Saturday and into Sunday was the weather!! Gone was the warmth of the sun, to be replaced on Sunday morning with a damp track, low grey misty cloud despite a fresh wind blowing down the Hanger Straight with rain looking decidedly possible.

Without any dramas in morning warm up, all four cars had their Am drivers aboard for the first hour(ish) of the race, during which three minimum time pit stops had to be made with no driver driving for more than 100 minutes. The #7 Beechdean car also had an additional ten seconds of stop time to take at their final stop as ‘reward’ for their P2 finish at the first round of the Championship at Brands Hatch.


A good start was had by all the Aston’s as all quickly started the chase behind the already gapping Mercedes AMG at the front. Petrobelli maintained his position in P4 whilst Howard wasn’t too far behind on track in P8 but such was the pace of the lead car that there was already a thirteen second gap by the end of the first half hour.

It was a similar story in GT4 as the two lead cars put a large gap to the pack behind, but Topham was doing a great job in the #27 car by keeping himself out of trouble and proving his potential by staying up with those with more experience around him. They would pit ahead of most in their class (after 45 minutes) and that gave AMR factory driver Turner some space on track to work some of his magic.


Just ahead of the first scheduled round of stops for the GT3 cars, Petrobelli was now up to P2 whilst Howard was up to P4 and Grimes P9 after some earlier contact before each pitted just after the hour mark. Time was lost in pit lane for the #95 car as the Dane struggled to opening the driver’s door to let Grimes out – almost ripping it off its hinges before members of the pit crew managed to use more subtler means to the same effect.

Eastwood soon got back to P5 and Adam P7 at the start of their opening stints but a quick spin for the #7 car at the Loop lost the Scotsman both time and positions whilst Sorensen was making up for lost time in the #95 car moving up to P14 whilst Turner was steadily moving up the order in class, passing the #57 BMW for the lead just before the end of his stint.


Moving into the final hour of the race all three AMR GT3 crew had still two stops to take, one being imminent, and each would place the Pro’s back into the cars for the final push to the flag. Turner had handed over to Topham for a shorter second stint for him before he handed the #27 car back to him for the final half hour.

A late track limits warning for Adam in the #7 car adjusted his line through Copse whilst Eastwood went for a final push to progress up from their fourth place whilst Sorensen came out just inside the top ten. The only chance for the #38 car was for the two battling Lamborghini’s to take each other out as they battled each other for second but for a change – that inadvertent ‘tap’ between them never came and Eastwood and Petrobelli had to make do with a P4 finish.


The great news came from the GT4 field as Turner brought the #27 Newbridge AMR Vantage GT4 home in the lead of not just their Pro-Am class but also at the head of the GT4 field for not just the team’s first win but also his own in British GT. Being close to Topham on the pit wall as the car crossed the line – what that meant for Topham was obvious!!

These results leave the #7 Beechdean crew in second in the GT3 Pro-Am Championship just 4.5 points behind the #63 Barwell Lamborghini and places the #27 Newbridge team into fourth having only competed at the Silverstone round so far.


It was a great day and was certainly great to be trackside again.

Notlad Racing secure a dramatic race win at latest round of IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge

Incredible scenes at the latest round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series at Watkins Glen last night that saw all three Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s lead the four-hour race on merit and for one to come through to steal the top step with just minutes to go.

Racing under the baking sun of the up-state New York circuit, yesterday’s Qualifying had seen the series guesting #23 Notlad Racing AMR of Pat Gallagher take a P3 starting position behind two front line McLaren 570’s. The #09 Stoner Car Care with Automatic AMR of Brandon Kidd was next fastest in P7 with the bright yellow #7 Volt Racing with Archangel Aston of Alan Brynjolfsson an uncharacteristic P9.


Again running as part of a combined grid of twenty four GS (GT4) cars and fourteen TCR cars, it was the #23 car of Gallagher who made the most significant move on the opening lap to claim P2 whilst the two McLarens were squabbling for position on track whilst the #09 and #7 cars each lost a position on track relative to their starting position.

Just fifteen minutes into the four-hour race, the first caution period was thrown for a self-inflicted high-speed impact with the tyre wall for the #46 Team TGM Camaro that left debris strewn across the track. Thankfully, the driver was OK and was also to drive the wreck of his car to a place of safety which helped to shorten that FCY.


At the restart, Gallagher strangely dived into pit lane for a splash from P2 but was soon able to catch the pack again as the field again went under caution for another car stuck in the gravel. Whilst the other GS runners would then pit once pit lane opened, the #23 would stay out as they were now running on a different strategy.

Just after the first hour mark, a more significant incident on track involving a GS and TCR car in two singular accidents at the same place would to a further (and longer) period of caution whilst drivers were seen to, and debris fields cleared. Kidd in the #09 then assumed the lead with Gallagher down in P12 and the #7 car having swapped to Trent Hindman in P15.


Back to green and then back to caution seemed to be the theme of the event whilst Hindman and Gallagher trading fastest laps in-between before Stevan McAleer finally got his turn aboard the #23 car from the lead of the race.

At the three-hour mark, McAleer made the cars final stop of the race giving the race lead to Hindman but the #7 Volt Racing crew were to come to the attention of the Stewards as they pitted marginally after another FCY weas called for a stranded TCR and barrier damage. Whilst the cars circulated around behind the Safety car, Stewards later awarded the #7 car with a Drive Through Penalty for that act and that would cost them a chance of winning the race.


Going back to green with just 16 minutes remaining, it was a straight forward dice between the #95 Turner BMW for the win and all it was was the smallest of mistakes from Bill Auberlain to let McAleer through with just three minutes remaining for the #23 Notlad Racing car to take an emotional (and first) win in the IMSA Series.


The #7 would eventually finish P8 overall with the #09 car done in P23 after they also received a Drive Through for an earlier pit stop transgression.

Back on the ground at British GT again but still a bit rusty!!

A significant day for us and seemingly many of our media colleagues today as we ‘went back to school’ and attended our first British GT Championship event of the year and for most, the first motorsport event for a very long time!

Whilst it was obviously good to be back trackside again, there are still remnants of social distancing and bio security measures still being applied at Silverstone this weekend with fans being restricted to the National Pit Straight only and media not permitted within the garages or indeed on tomorrows grid for example which for all are something of a pain.


Anyway, for the four Aston Martin Racing cars participating in this weekends tenth anniversary event of the Silverstone 500, their biggest problem was changing setup after last night’s torrential rain effectively created another ‘green’ track for them in today’s first Free Practice session after yesterday’s warmth in private testing.

Two one-hour Free Practice sessions were available to all thirty-one cars today ahead of this afternoon’s Qualifying with both guesting TF Sport GT3 cars at the top of the timing screen having clocked times suitable to claim P2 and P3 for the #38 and #95 cars respectively whilst the #7 Beechdean AMR was slightly lower down in P9. The sole AMR GT4 from the Newbridge Motorsport team claimed top spot in their Pro-Am class with drivers Matt Topham and Darren Turner in their #27 car.


Then during a red flag interrupted Free Practice 2 session, the gaps between the Astons spread out slightly with the #95 Marco Sorensen/Bonamy Grimes car leading the marque in P4, Giacomo Petrobelli/Charlie Eastwood #38 in P7, the #7 Beechdean of Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam P11 with the #27 Newbridge car having to settle for P2 in class that time around.

That presented things nicely ahead of this afternoons Pro and Am Qualifying sessions that saw the GT3 Am’s out first followed by their Pro’s and again in GT4 after that.


Aggregated times initially placed the #38 TF Sport car in P2 but a later post session penalty for a track violation saw that moved back down to P4 for tomorrows start. The #7 Beechdean crew finished in (what appeared to be in body language) a very disgruntled P7 after they were left tinkering with various parts of their car just ahead of Qualifying whilst the #95 ended up P13.

In GT4 meanwhile, the #27 Newbridge car lapped aggregated times that would place the latest full season AMR recruits to the Championship in P4 overall but still P2 in their class.


With rain again threatening to fall over Northamptonshire overnight, tomorrows start to the Silverstone 500 will be at 12:10pm (local)

Early pace from the three Aston's at IMSA's Watkins Glen 4hr event

It’s been a descent start to this weekend’s proceedings at IMSA’s Michelin Pilot Challenge event from Watkins Glen in New York State for the three Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 runners from Volt Racing with Archangel, Notlad Racing with RS1 and Stoner Car Care with Automatic Racing.

With Qualifying just completed along with two Free Practice sessions before that ahead of tomorrow’s four-hour race, all three Aston’s figure in the top ten GS cars amongst the combined grid of thirty eight GS and TCR cars ready for tomorrows race.

During FP1, the #23 Notlad Racing Aston of Pat Gallagher and Stevan McAleer was fastest with the #7 Volt Racing car of Alan Brynjolfsson and Trent Hindman in P3 with the #09 Stoner Car Care car of Ramin Abdolvahabi/Rob Ecklin and Brandon Kidd in P11.

Then in FP2, it was the turn of the #7 Volt Racing car to hit the top spot with the #23 Notlad car in P3 but with the #09 this time down in P20 as the only Aston running a three-driver crew.

In this afternoon’s Qualifying, it has been the #23 Notlad car of Pat Gallagher how has stolen the march on the other Aston’s by claiming a P3 slot on tomorrow’s grid with Brandon Kidd coming through in the #09 to claim P7 whilst Brynjolfsson will be disappointed with his P9 finish – 1.16 seconds off the pole setting pace from the #13 AWA McLaren 570s.

Getting set for the Silverstone 500 tomorrow

First track rubber has been laid during the two sessions of private testing today ahead of tomorrow’s more formal start to the 10th running of the British GT Championship #Silverstone500 meeting from the home of British motor racing.

Amongst the thirty-one car mix of GT3 and GT4, Pro-Am, Silver and Am cars and drivers expected to take part this weekend, there lies four Aston Martin Racing Vantage race cars – one full season GT3 from the Beechdean AMR team, one full season GT4 car from the Newbridge Motorsport team and two guesting GT3 cars from TF Sport.


Last time out about a month ago at Brands Hatch, the #7 Beechdean GT3 of Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam came away with a P2 finish after a close battle with the WPI Lamborghini and by today’s test times, the Lamborghini’s again appear fast taking top slots in both sessions.

In GT4 meanwhile, the new AMR entry from the Newbridge team with drivers Matt Topham and Darren Turner have diced with the Toyota Supra GT4 to swap top honours in their GT4 Pro-Am class meaning that we should be in for a highly entertaining and competitive second round thriller in the Championship.


TF Sport have today also presented two contracting Vantage GT3’s that Marco Sorensen and Bonamy Grimes will share in the #95 car alongside Giacomo Petrobelli and Charlie Eastwood in the #38 car.


Times during testing are obviously meaningless once the official timing clock comes into force with the full backing of Championship rules and regulations. That all starts just before 10am tomorrow as the grid takes to the track for the first hour long Free Practice session.
