ACO to confirm Le Mans 24 entry list tomorrow

Sunday, February 27, 2022

Tomorrow will see the confirmation from the ACO of the entry list (and indeed expected long reserve list) for this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Whilst we already know that this year’s full season entries for the World Endurance Championship will again get automatic and guaranteed entry into this flagship event, there remains some doubt as the fortunes of the remaining Aston Martin Racing Partner Teams entries from other ACO rules series.

With the opening track action of the WEC’s tenth season just over two weeks away at the official Prologue over at Sebring in mid-March, there is still a question or two that needs to be confirmed for that as well as the LM24 entry.

The #33 TF Sport AMR Vantage GTE entry has already been fully confirmed with Florian Latorre and Marco Sorenson joining Ben Keating aboard that Am class car as have the #777 D’Station Racing with TF Sport Vantage GTE who recently confirmed Charlie Fagg as joining established team drivers Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii.

That is on top of a continuing question over the validity of David Pittard’s drive within the #98 Northwest AMR entry of Paul Dalla Lana and Nicki Thiim after the Brit was upgraded by the FIA from Silver to Gold. The GTE Am Class graded would prohibit a Bronze/Gold/Platinum combination so the entry list for tomorrow might just answer that question?

The other questions will be whether the TF Sport European Le Mans Series entries of either John Hartshorne and Ahmad Al Harthy will be successful this year with expected entry requests bound to put available places beyond the thirty seven car full season WEC entry at a premium.

Both of these squads do have an established history with ACO rules series including the ELMS and Asian Le Mans Series – but will that be enough in 2022 if they have even applied which we believe that they must have?!?!

Surely?

An eventful GT America opening weekend which gives first win for Bell at St Petersburg

Sunday, February 27, 2022

Two races around the street circuit layout of St Petersburg was always going to make for some eventful action for the twenty-seven cars in the SRO GT America Series and that is precisely what happened even though some was at the expense of our preferred teams.

Five Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 powered Bronze rated drivers headed to Florida for this weekend’s season opening, two forty-minute rounds with reigning GT4 Champion Jason Bell near the top again in class with his #2 GMG Racing prepared car after Qualifying for Race 1 on Friday.

He was joined on track with Gray Newell aboard his #25 Heart of Racing car, the debuting Bryan Putt and his #15 Bsport Racing car, Ross Chouest with his second available #50 car after his Chouest Povoledo Racing AMR suffered engine issues earlier in the weekend and Sean Whalen aboard his distinctly liveried #888 Zelus Motorsport Aston Martin.

Under clear blue skies and intense Floridian sunshine Race 1 got underway in straight in incident and accident even before the grid reached turn one as the #15 car of Putt was involved in multiple contacts with other cars that sadly resulted in extensive front quarter damage for the red, white and blue car at the end of the start straight. Unfortunately for him, his debut race in the solo driver GT America Series would end there and then with a DNF.

The inter-car action car incident and accident action continued into turn 2 where the #2 car of Bell and the #25 car of Newell got together, spinning Bell around and placing him close to the rear of the pack as the race went under Full Course Caution but at least both cars were able to continue.

With nearly half the race time lost to the Safety Car, it was to be a twenty-two-minute sprint to the flag with the #50 car of Chouest surprisingly having survived journeying through all of this damage to assume third in class as the race went back to green with the remaining Aston’s down to P9 backwards.

With several drivers on a ‘recovery drive’ into the final minutes, a spin for Whalen dropped him back down the order whilst Bell and Newell had progressed to catch up with Chouest into the final lap just as the #50 car had lost out on a possible opening race class podium.

To end the race, #50 Chouest would finish P4 in class, #2 Bell P5, #25 Newell P7, #888 Whalen P9 and #15 Putt a DNF.

Saturday’s race grid positions were determined by their fastest lap in race 1 and that meant for a grid order in class of P3 for Bell, P4 for Newell, P6 for Chouest, P10 for Whalen and a distant P14 for Putt seeing that he hadn’t actually completed a racing lap on Friday.

More action into turn 1 on the opening lap for the now twenty six starters as Bell capitalised on the pole setting BMW GT4 getting baulked by the spinning Corvette to move up to P2 behind Derek DeBoer in his TRG Porsche – maybe with a little bit of muscle with damage clearly visible upon his white #2 GMG Racing Aston.

Fortunately no FCY this time as the grid was allowed to race after some hasty circuit clean up and it wasn’t too long before the GT3/GT2/GT4 grid was evenly spaced out around the street/airfield-based circuit layout.

After ten minutes of running, Bryan Putts audition sadly went from bad to worse as he was spun out by the #888 Aston of Sean Whalen with the #15 car being forced to retire again in pit lane from damage sustained just as Bell took the class lead from DeBoer.

Whilst Chouest and Whalen were busy battling with themselves down in P10, constant errors from DeBoer allowed Newell to catch the #66 Porsche and make a challenge for position going into the final five minutes.

Unfortunately for the Heart of Racing driver, DeBoer over defended a position already lost – contacted the #25 Aston Martin which spun Newell around but also ruptured his own radiators to then slam into the concrete barrier just one corner later to bring out another FCY. Fortunately for Newell, he had already been able to re-join the race before this to preserve a P5 finish for him as the race finished behind the Safety Car.

For Bell however, it was the first of (hopefully) many more race wins to come this season as Chouest and Whalen also completed the race (a lap down to the GT4 leaders) to finish their first weekend back racing in P7 and P10 respectively.

The series now moves onto Sonoma for their next round, this time in support of both the GT4 America and GT World Challenge America Series there in mid-April.

PROsport Racing commit one of the AMR Vantage GT4's to both ADAC GT4 Germany and GT4 European Series

Saturday, February 26, 2022

German based Prosport Racing have become the latest team to confirm at least part of their 2022 race programme for two of their drivers with a double header entry for drivers Mike David Ortmann and Hugo Sasse.

Stepping into one of the team’s Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s after their ill-fated debut into the DTM Trophy Series, Ortmann and Sasse competed with the team in the final three rounds of the ADAC GT4 Germany Series with podium winning success in that series before racing most recently together in the 24H Series Dubai 24.

Today’s news sees this pairing confirm a dual full season effort into both the ADAC GT4 Germany Series as well as the GT4 European Series that will both start later in April.

This announcement will be part of another multifaceted season for the Christoph Esser ran team and his AMR Vantage GT3 and GT4 machinery.

Bell resumes from where he left off in GT America at St Petersburg

Friday, February 25, 2022

It was the first day back at school yesterday for the Aston Martin Racing entries competing in this weekend’s opening round of the SRO GT America Series from the street circuit of St Petersburg in southern Florida.

As previously reported, five AMR Vantage GT4 teams will be competing this weekend with a further entry from the Flying Lizard team joining the series in time for their next round at Sonoma in mid-April.

Taking to the track yesterday for their two available Free Practice sessions were the #2 GMG Racing entry for reigning GT4 Drivers Champion Jason Bell, the #25 Heart of Racing AMR of Gray Newell, the #15 Bsport Racing car of Bryan Putt, the #50 Chouest Povoledo Racing car of Ross Chouest and the #888 Zelus Motorsport Aston Martin of Sean Whalen amongst the mixed GT3/GT4 grid of twenty-seven cars.

Running explicitly for the benefit of Bronze ranked drivers only, this IndyCar Series supporting GT America opener will see two forty-minute (non-pit stop punctuated) races being run over both Friday afternoon and Saturday morning local time.

With Qualifying later today, early practice times have seen Bell again shine towards the top of the GT4 times by the end of the day with GT America debutant Bryan Putt not too far behind with Newell just fractions of a second behind him again but come the races, any street circuit venue always delivers drama and incident!

As usual, both races are being streamed live via the series YouTube channel.

And the Aston Martin news just keeps coming!

Thursday, February 24, 2022

It’s been another busy week on the news front regarding the growing number of Aston Martin Racing Partner and Customer teams racing commitments in various series around the world this year.

Down in Portimao, two Beechdean Ice Cream liveried AMR Vantage GT3’s have arrived at the Portuguese circuit along with (at least) three factory drivers in the form of Nicki Thiim, Marco Sorenson, Valentin Hasse-Clot and Maxime Martin for a few days of testing.

Not all of these drivers will be able to race these cars together of course so some of this will be pre Sebring WEC mileage for them.

Whilst nothing has been announced officially, we do not expect these to be for any national series of racing and are more likely to be replace the loss of the Garage 59 team that represented the marque within the GT World Challenge Europe Series.

We will wait to see what is officially revealed but we do expect this to be a little more than Andrew Howard’s generosity in allowing his cars to be used for testing!!!

The Bullitt Racing team have also been out testing again, this time at Motorland Aragon with an as yet undisclosed driver line for a series we believe may be beyond that of the Michelin Le Mans Cup Series endeavours already heavily intimated by the team but not officially ratified by the series.

The Racing One team in Germany are also out testing again in Europe this this week and have confirmed the need for their fourth AMR Vantage GT4 chassis to be prepared in time for some pre-season testing ahead of their growing GT4 commitments.

The Swiss based Racing Spirit of Lemans team have this week confirmed their second driver line up for what is expected to be a dual FFSA GT4 and GT4 European Series at a launch party held this week.

With the first pairing being for the French national FFSA GT4 Series, their latest announcement confirms that Konstantin Lachenauer will partner Gus Bowers within the GT4 European Series after the young Swiss drivers opening season in the series with the AGS Events Racing team and the Brit’s United Autosport’s McLaren 570s entry where he finished fifth in the Silver Cup last season. This will be an entry to keep a keen eye upon once the series kicks off in early April.

Finally, but by no means least, the Belgium based Street Art Racing Team have this week confirmed their first driver aboard their AMR Vantage GT3 entry into the International GT Open Series with former GT4 European Series Am Champion Pascal Bachmann taking to the car with an (as yet) unconfirmed driver within the Pro-Am Series.

Their livery reveal for the Vantage GT3 entry will show us that the car will be difficult to miss out on track for a series that starts in Portugal in early May but with some official “winter testing” on offer in Spain in a couple of week’s time.

Entry list revealed for the GT America opener this weekend at St Petersburg

Monday, February 21, 2022

This season’s SRO GT America Series shows another healthy presence of Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 machinery being entered for many returning teams in 2022.

Reigning GT America GT4 Drivers Champions Jason Bell is first on the list with his #2 GMG Racing prepared car along with Gray Newell with his #25 Heart of Racing Vantage as returning full season entrants into this second year of the GT America Series.

They in turn are joined by other entrants from the parallel GT4 America Series that now see this bronze rated driver only series as useful race mileage over the (usually) same race weekends of the Pro-Am GT4 America series – all except this weekend’s visit to St Petersburg where the GT America Series again supports the IndyCar Series around the street circuit venue.

Bryan Putt and his #15 Bsport Racing car is a new full season entry as is Ross Chouest in the newly renamed #50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Aston Martin and whose teams have now acquired a second Vantage platform to race these joint GT America/GT4 America race weekends.

Completing the AMR line up (certainly for the St Petersburg opener) is the #888 Zelus Motorsport AMR of Sean Whalen who return to the series after a couple of ‘toe in the water’ rounds last season.

With track action kicking off on Thursday with Free Practice, the first forty-minute race will be on Friday with the second on Saturday morning (local time).

Looking for a change in fortune at Yas Marina as the Asian Le Mans Series battles out to the end in Abu Dhabi

Thursday, February 17, 2022

Just where has this week gone as we arrive at a vast rate of knots at this weekend’s concluding double header finale of the Asian Le Mans Series from the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi!!

Last weekend in Dubai, we saw the three TF Sport prepared Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crews battle hard for scant reward as the McLaren and Ferrari powered teams dominated the two opening four hours races there.

Despite that, the #69 Oman Racing crew of Ahmad Al Harthy, Sam De Haan and Charlie Eastwood came away from Dubai in fifth place overall thanks to their P6 and P5 finishes respectively but they find themselves already more than a race win down to the present McLaren powered Inception Racing class leaders.

For the #77 D’Station Racing and #95 TF Sport AMR entries of Satoshi Hoshino, Tomonobu Fujii, Tom Gamble and John Hartshorne, Jonny Adam and Henrique Chaves respectively, their weekend in Dubai was one of progression and consistency as lap times improved and race results were either improved upon or at least maintained.

For all the TF Sport crews, tyre wear and degradation was obviously an issue (as it was for all of the runners around the Dubai Autodrome) and it is hoped that the change of circuit style and type at Yas Marina will help improve upon that situation for as long as unnecessary drive through penalties for contact or track limits can be avoided this time!

Looking back through the lap times for these three cars at last year’s rounds in Dubai as well as the 24H Series Dubai 24 (although on differing rubber with that one) the lap times put in last weekend were roughly the same as they were last year, so the differences in pace and track position will be down to track discipline, tyre management and the differing abilities within each car’s three drivers compared to the rest of the GT class.

Last years results from Yas Marina did show that the Vantage had pace and durability during that season with the five Aston Martin’s that started both races at Yas Marina then, all bar two finished within the top 10 for each race.

Additionally and since the end of race 2 in Dubai, both the Ferrari 488 GT3 and the McLaren 720s GT3 platforms have had a Balance of Performance adjustment made against them by the ACO with both platforms having a turbo boost reduction in time for the first official track session at Yas Marina tomorrow.

The question here though will be – will it be enough to bring the Aston to the forefront of the class battle in time to make it a Championship battle?

Like last weekend, the framework will again be two Free Practice sessions on Friday before Qualifying for both races later in the evening before Race 1 starts at 14:30hrs local on Saturday and Race 2 and final round of the 2022 ALMS season starting at 16:30hrs on Sunday.

Various more Aston Martin Racing teams hitting the tracks ahead of their 2022 seasons

Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Picking up on a few ‘leftovers’ from the weekend and a few more from this week, we have seen a steady stream of news flow from various new, existing and indeed returning Aston Martin Racing Customer and Partner teams.

So in no particular order - last weekend had the German based Racing One team continue with their winter preparations ahead of their expected multiple European and German based GT4 programmes down at Jerez in Portugal where another visit to the GT Winter Series at the circuit saw off a progressive week of testing for their two available AMR Vantage GT4’s.

The two shorter sprint races proved useful for their AMR convertee Moritz Gisy with two P2 finishes in class with a further P3 in class after the longer endurance rounds. That success went alongside class pole position for Markus Lungstrass in the first sprint race before handing the #18 back to Henrick Lyngbye-Pederson for race 2 and then with both in race 3 where they finished P2 in class.

Neither anything to shout home about considering the multi-class opposition but good early race mileage non the less.

Yesterday we saw a further confirmation from the Belgium based Street Art Racing team of their AMR Vantage GT3 entry into the 2022 International GT Open Series alongside that of their previously announced AMR entry into the parallel GT Open Cup Series.

Where the release featured mainly around the return of their ‘Art’ cars for their new GT3 entry, it failed to identify the driver line up for the series that Estoril at the beginning of May.

Also down in southern Europe this week was the Bullitt Racing team again with their new AMR Vantage GT3 that looks set to be running within the ACO rules Le Mans Cup Series this year.

This time at Portimao, the Spanish based team enjoyed the knowledge and guidance of Valentin Hasse-Clot who led drivers Stephen Pattrick and Romain Monti around the Portuguese circuit for what should have been a full two day test before some untimely rain and a certainly unwanted off for one, prematurely ended that test.

Next weekend sees the opening round of the GT America Series around the street circuit of St Petersburg, and it was certainly timely news this week to learn of the return to the AMR family of the Flying Lizard team as their new drivers Andy Lee an Elias Sabo will feature in both the single bronze driver GT America Series and the dual driver GT4 America Series that starts later next month.

Whilst we still await the official entry list for the two forty-minute races around St Pete’s for the GT America Series, we do expect the AMR line up to have grown from the two cars of GMG Racing for the 2021 GT America Drivers Champion Jason Bell and the Heart of Racing for Gray Newell last season to as many as six Vantage GT4’s.

Finally, having ended their inaugural season with an AMR Vantage GT3 in the GT World Challenge America Series with a hefty off, the Frank Gannett/Drew Staveley driven Ian Lacey Racing prepared car is presently under a state of full rebuild for what is hoped to be a second season for the team and crew in the series.

Having taken delivery of a new tub from Prodrive in the UK, that leaves them the ‘small job’ of rebuilding the car back up from scratch in time for some pre-season testing and the first round of the GTWCA Series from Sonoma in mid-April.

Welcome back to the Flying Lizard Motorsport team in GT and GT4 America

Monday, February 14, 2022

Two years after Flying Lizard Motorsports swept the team and driver titles in GT4 America with a pair of Aston Martin Vantage GT4 race cars, the team will again race a pair of Aston Martins in SRO America. With the support of sponsor 5.11, manufacturer of purpose-built apparel, footwear, and gear, Elias Sabo and Andy Lee will team up to compete together in the GT4 America championship, and Sabo will run a separate GT4 entry in GT America. Elias Sabo and Andy Lee will team up to compete together in the GT4 America championship, and Sabo will run a separate GT4 entry in GT America.

“It’s great to welcome new racers to the Lizard family and to return back to again race with Aston Martin, a manufacturer we’ve had great success with,” said Program Manager Darren Law. “I have personally known Andy for a long time and recently met Elias, and I’m proud to welcome them to the team. They’re both proven racers and I’m looking forward to challenging for more championships this year in SRO America.”

The Lizards clinched the four 2020 team driver titles with 17 wins and 21 podiums between the 2020 GT4 America Sprint and GT4 America SprintX program with drivers Michael Dinan and Robby Foley. The remarkable success earned the team their seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth championship titles since the team’s professional racing inception in 2004.

"We are delighted to have Flying Lizard back with Aston Martin Racing,” said Huw Tasker, head of Customer Racing at Aston Martin. “We've enjoyed working with them in the past and we know what a great combination AMR and Flying Lizard can be following our super-successful partnership in 2020 that included a clean sweep of four SRO GT4 championships. The Vantage GT4's growth as a competitive proposition continues in the GT racing market around the world, and we expect Flying Lizard will fully contribute to that in 2022."

Andy Lee

The approaching season will be Elias Sabo’s first year racing the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 car. Sabo first joined what was then the Pirelli World Challenge in 2018, participating in six races in the SprintX GTS Pro/Am category, racing a McLaren 570S GT3. In 2020, he began a two-year stint racing Audi machinery, running an Audi R8 LMS GT4 in the GT4 America Pro/Am class and an Audi R8 LMS GT2 in GT America.

This season, he will contest the No. 8 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 alongside Andy Lee in GT4 America. Lee is also a familiar face in GT4 America, originally the Pirelli World Challenge SprintX series. He joined the series in 2018 as Sabo’s co-driver, creating a strong on-track pairing in a competitive series. The GT4 America series hosts a two-driver, one-car format, in a pair of 60-minute races each weekend. Sabo and Lee will compete together in the Pro/Am category, one of the series three classes.

Alias Sabo

Sabo will also run a separate No. 8 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 entry in GT America, a sprint series for bronze drivers, running a pair of 40-minute races per event weekend. The GT America series is comprised of three classes: SRO3 (GT3), GT2, and GT4. Sabo participated in the inaugural season in 2021, competing in both rounds at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the inaugural Nashville Music City Grand Prix. The team will compete in the full 2022 GT America schedule, with the exception of the season-opening race at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the Nashville Grand Prix.

TF Sport AMR Vantage GTE's confirmed amongst an ELMS grid of forty two cars

Monday, February 14, 2022

Sadly, no more Aston Martin Racing customer team surprises within todays entry list announcement for this seasons European Le Mans Series.

Fielding another sizable grid of forty-two LMP2, LMP3 and GTE race cars, TF Sport again features as the sole AMR Partner team of choice going into this year’s ACO rules series with two driver crews already confirmed to us by the team.

Returning for another year within his #95 TF Sport entered AMR Vantage GTE is John Hartshorne who is joined this year by Jonny Adam and Henrique Chaves. That crew, as you may already be aware is busy over in the Asian Le Mans Series getting in some important race miles with their new driver line up (albeit in an AMR Vantage GT3) before hitting the first round of the ELMS that starts at Le Castellet in France in just over two months’ time.

They in turn will also be joined by two more drivers presently busy in the Asian Le Mans Series in the form of Ahmad Al Harthy's Oman Racing team entry with Sam de Haan who will be joined this year by former WEC GTE Pro Drivers Champion Marco Sorensen.

As per previous seasons – this should be as equally entertaining!

Even the wind and rain of Hampton Downs fall to stop the success of RaceLabs AMR Vantage GT8R's

Sunday, February 13, 2022

Some great racing and some incredible weather were just two contributory factors that gave another successful and podium winning round of the Rodin Cars Super GT NZ for the two Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT8R crews.

Points already gained at both Highlands Park and Mike Pero Motorsport Park had the RaceLab prepared GT8R of Stephen Harrison hold a slim lead of the GT4 Class going into this round and that was soon to be added to after Saturday’s first half hour race where the yellow #78 AMR took a P4 overall finish and importantly, a class win to add to his haul.

Then for Sunday - the weather changed.

Increasingly long bouts of torrential rain and a stiffening wind made for the grid to take to the track for their formation lap had all on slicks only for the Hampton Downs racetrack to become almost flooded within minutes meaning for a late call from Race Control to allow all to pit for wets.

Unfortunately for Harrison, a reoccurring brake issue with his car forced him to retire into the pit lane without crossing the line to take the start of Sundays second half hour race. For Shaun Helms and his #77 Aston Martin, that delayed start allowed him to reach pit lane in time for the restart having been delayed on the public roads into the circuit due to the weather closing a nearby bridge.

That piece of luck was later transformed into a P3 overall finish – P2 in GT4 after being passed for position just meters ahead of the chequered flag by the #24 McLaren.

That left Sundays afternoon’s closing one hour race to see things out at the North Island racetrack as Harrison had qualified sixth overall with Helms down in twelfth. Fortunately, the rains had passed and the track had almost dried although the wind remained extremely strong.

An early and unfortunate contact with his RaceLab team Ginetta entry had Helms on the back foot as the grid cycled through the laps and into the pitstop window. With the GT3 cars electing to pit early for longer had the GT4 cars rise to the top of the timing screen again as the race approached half distance.

The previous races double race winning Porsche came to an untimely halt on track but that allowed for the pack to rebunch for a five-minute dash to the flag allowing for a charging Harrison to scythe past four cars to have a four-car battle for position going into the final lap.

Eventually finishing eighth overall and fourth in class, the nature of the entries allowed Harrison to claim another podium finish to that of Saturday with a P2 finish in class in Race 3.

The Series now has a two week break before its final round at Taupo at the end of February.
