Team Speed Monkeys try out the GTC Race Series at their finale at Hochenheim this weekend

Friday, September 30, 2022

Taking another step to one side from their more traditional DTM Trophy path, German based Team Speed Monkeys take two more interested parties around the Hockenheim circuit this weekend as they enter the final round of the GTC Race Series.

Last seen by us several years ago when we still had normally aspirated V12 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 race cars still screaming around the various German circuits, winning the outright GTC titles in the process, this weekend has one of this team’s AMR Vantage GT4’s doing likewise with two potential customers for next season.

2021 Porsche Sports Club Champion Lorenz Stegmann is joined by Swiss former Renault Clio Central Europe race Antonio Citera for the various races that make up this series culminating in an hour long, pit stop punctuated race.

Whereas this appears to be the first time outside of more traditional German machinery for Stegmann, Citera tested the Aston Martin at Oschersleben when Paul Aural König was testing with the team for his GT4 European encounter.

Just a couple of title chances as twelve Aston Martins take on the final rounds of the GT4 European Series in Spain

Friday, September 30, 2022

The GT4 European series finalises its 2022 account this weekend with another brace of one hour sprint races around the Circuit de Catalunya track near Barcelona.

Always a popular series, the final weekend welcomes another near capacity grid of forty-eight cars with some battling it out to the conclusion of their class whilst others dip that metaphorical toe into the water ahead of any decision for next season.

Amongst those forty-eight cars, we have been told to expect a whopping twelve Aston Martin Racing powered teams competing again through all three available classes with a few crews returning to their earlier combinations whilst we also welcome new crews to the series for the first time.

Amongst the latter we see the FFSA GT4 entry of the GPA Racing’s Florent Grizaud and Kevin Jimenez join the sister SRO series for the first time ahead of their French national series finale in just two weeks’ time as well as Ruben Del Sarte partnering British GT GT4 racer and GT4 Championship contender Jamie Day aboard the #58 Mirage Racing AMR Vantage.

From a season ending championship stand point of view, just two AMR crews stand any mathematical chance of securing the Silver Class by the end of the weekend with the #24 Prosport Racing duo of Mike David Ortmann and Hugo Sasse best placed in third but still thirty eight points behind the leading Mercedes whilst the #10 Racing Spirit of Lemans AMR of Konstantin Lachenauer and Gus Bowers really do need to win both races and rely upon the leaders failing to score to have any hope there.

In the Pro-Am class, it’s just the #25 Prosport Racing car of Rodrique Gillion/Nico Verdonck and the return of the #9 Racing One AMR of Christian Gisy/Ralf Kelleners again but they both sit mid table with just personal pride and ambition to race for whilst we also see three cars compete within the Am class.

Like we’ve said earlier, it’s a series debut for the #72 GPA Racing crew whilst the #18 Racing One AMR of Henrik Pederson-Lyngbye and the #89 AGS Events Racing AMR of Julien Lambert and Wilfried Cazalbon both see the season out in Spain but with still a very distinct chance for the French #89 crew being just twenty-two points behind their class leaders.

The #6 Racing One car of Moritz/Vincent Gisy, the #7 AGS Events AMR of Mike Parisy/Nicolas Gomar, #80 AGS Events AMR of Tom Verdier/Loris Cabirou and the #19 Racing Spirit of Lemans AMR of Tom Canning/Akhil Rabindra complete the Aston Martin powered driver line up going into this final round.

Driver line up for Viper Niza Racings AMR debut in Singapore confirmed

Thursday, September 29, 2022

Less than a week since their public reveal as the latest team within the Asian theatre to change allegiances to the Aston Martin Racing brand sees the Viper Niza Racing team have their drivers confirmed ahead of their first AMR adventure next week in Singapore.

Competing at the third round of the Thailand Super Series (TSS)  around the Marina Bay circuit on the streets of Singapore, will see the two new AMR Vantage GT3 and GT4 cars of the team compete for the first time in support of the Formula 1 event there.

Running a two – sixty-minute race format, this debut event will see the #65 AMR Vantage of Douglas Khoo run within the GT3 class whilst their AMR GT4 will be raced by the 2021 FFSA GT4 Silver Cup Champion Romain Leroux within the series' GTC Class.

Intrigued by the apparent random nature of this connection, we since understand that the young Frenchman started his racing career over in Asia and with the help of others within the AMR organisation, has landed him this first solo racing experience since those of his early F4 days and karting days.

Presently, Leroux is battling at the sharp end of the German ADAC GT4 Germany Series alongside co driver Ben Dorr in their Dorr Motorsport AMR Vantage GT4 whilst Douglas steps over to the AMR chassis after recent racing experience in both an LMP3 and an Audi GT3 in the Asian Le Mans Series earlier this year.

We also understand that the GT4 car is a former Uno Racing car as raced by Thomas Song periodically in the Chinese GTSSC series.

Maxime Martin to depart the Aston Martin Racing family

Wednesday, September 28, 2022

In a simple post upon his social media earlier, Aston Martin Racing factory today confirmed that he will be leaving #TeamAMR for pastures new at the end of the season.

Brought in to support the AMR factory effort within the World Endurance Championship in 2018, the Belgium has also become a recognisable figure for various AMR customer teams within many paddocks including the British GT, GT World Challenge Europe and most reacently IMSA.

Always the gentleman, we understand the reasons for his departure and wish him all the best for the future. His social media post read:-

After an incredible five-year journey, it's time to say goodbye to the Aston Martin Racing family. It's impossible for me to count the challenges we have overcome. We have competed in many different championships, always sharing the same goals: to win and to do our best, as we have proven again this season 👊🏻

With AMR I achieved one of the greatest results of my entire career: winning the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans was simply incredible, and I will never forget the sweet taste of that wonderful victory 🏆

For me it's time to move on, aiming for the start of a new and exciting chapter in my career. 👀

Thank you very much Aston Martin Racing: I wish you all the best for the future, and I look forward to meet you again in one of the many paddocks next year! 🍀

Maxime.

An IMSA Championship in sight for Heart of Racing but a storm on the horizon at the Petit Le Mans season finale

Wednesday, September 28, 2022

Aston Martin’s Vantage GT3 heads into this weekend’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship finale at Road Atlanta, GA, on the brink of a historic achievement for the British ultra-luxury sports car brand. Aston Martin Racing’s Seattle-based partner team The Heart of Racing begins the finale of North America’s premier endurance series leading the GTD Class Teams’ Championship with Roman De Angelis (CDN) on top of the class Drivers’ standings. Moreover, Aston Martin remains firmly in contention for the GTD Manufacturers crown.

Should the team – the reigning IMSA GTD Sprint Cup champion – be successful in its quest to clinch any of those titles following the 10-Hour race on Saturday, 1 October, it will be the first time that an Aston Martin has contributed to an overall IMSA championship class title.

It would also stand as this generation Vantage GT3’s most significant achievement among the car’s ever-growing collection of accolades; and beautifully complement Vantage’s excellent season of global GT racing. TF Sport’s GTE Am class victory in the most recent round of the FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] at Fuji Speedway, in Japan, earlier this month, ensures that only they or fellow Aston Martin partner NorthWest AMR can clinch the crown in Bahrain in November. It will be the fifth world championship title for Aston Martin since WEC was formed a decade ago, and the second for the Vantage GTE – based on the highly-acclaimed four-litre V8 turbo-charged road car it derives from.

The Heart of Racing’s two-car team, which runs a Vantage in the GTD Pro class for Alex Riberas (ESP) and Aston Martin Racing works driver Ross Gunn (GBR), and another for the GTD class leader De Angelis and the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Maxime Martin (BEL), has been in a rich vein of form this season.

De Angelis and Martin – who makes his last start as an Aston Martin Racing works driver after a stellar five-year stint that has included multiple world championship and IMSA race victories and the 2020 FIA GT World Manufacturers’ title – have enjoyed a run of five podiums in six races. That includes two class victories at Watkins Glen and Mosport and three second places. Such results have ensured that Aston Martin Racing Driver Academy graduate De Angelis enters the final round, where he will again be joined in the #27 Vantage by Martin and Team Principal (and fellow Watkins Glen victor) Ian James (GBR), with a 45-point lead over nearest rival Stevan McAleer.

The Heart of Racing’s Gunn and Riberas have not given up on a top-three finish in the new-for-2022 GTD Pro category either and will be joined in the #23 Vantage by another team regular Tom Gamble (GBR) as they seek to add to their victories in Long Beach and Watkins Glen earlier this season.

The Heart of Racing is not the only team fielding an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 at Road Atlanta. Magnus Racing returns for its fifth outing of the season, having predominantly focused on long-distance events in its first year with the British brand. Having started 2022 with a brilliant second place in the Rolex Daytona 24 Hours, Americans John Potter, Andy Lally and Spencer Pumpelly will aim to finish the season on a similarly high note in their striking carbon black and green striped #44 Vantage.

The 25th Annual Motul Petit Le Mans is scheduled to begin with free practice at 0950 EST (-5 Hours BST), on Thursday, 29 September. The 10-Hour race will start at 1210 EST, on Saturday, 1 October.

The bitter-sweet side of motorsport for the Street Art RAcing AMR team at Monza

Monday, September 26, 2022

Street Art Racing’s return to the GT Open and GT Open Cup Series at Monza at the weekend came with a bruising encounter for their GT4 gentleman driver whereas their GT3 driver came away with something totally unexpected.

Back in the series after skipping two previous rounds due to prior business engagements, the Pascal Bachmann driven Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 entered the main GT Open Series as a solo Am classed driver kept his #007 car firmly rooted to the black stuff whilst others were not during the deluge that marred Saturdays opening round to come away with an opportunist P3 in class for his efforts.

Whilst that brought a smile to the Swiss drivers face, the face of Jahid Fazal-Karim was probably etched more to the side of pain and discomfort than delight after he experienced a 170kph+ off in the teams AMR Vantage GT4 during Free Practice.

Having had to climb out of his upside-down car, the Jetcraft owner was fortunately able to continue aboard the teams spare chassis with little more to some bruising to his lower leg to at least utilise his time investment in competing at this round.

At the close, Karim and co-driver Julian Darras came home in P10 and P8 over their two races whilst Bachmann’s podium in race one was unfortunately followed up with a race 2 technical DNF!

Their final rounds of the season are from Barcelona in two weeks’ time.

AMR powered dominance in ADAC GT4 Germany leaves a three car Vantage shoot out for top honours at season finale

Monday, September 26, 2022

This weekend’s penultimate round of the ADAC GT4 Germany Series from the Sachsenring saw another dominant display from one Aston Martin Racing powered team who took one pole position and one front row start and transformed them into two race wins as well as a podium lock out for their stablemates.

Coming into this fifth round of six, had the #69 Dorr Motorsport AMR Vantage GT4 of Phil Dorr and Indy Dontjie leading the series but with two superb drives from first the #24 Prosport Racing AMR of Mike David Ortmann and Hugo Sasse as well as from the #007 Dorr car of brother Ben Dorr with Romain Leroux saw a complete reversal of fortunes with the #24 car now leading the Championship with the #69 crew with just a mathematical chance of securing the ultimate prize for their efforts by the end of the final round of the series at Hockenheim in four weeks’ time.

In Saturdays hour long opener, it was the #24 Prosport who literally lead the way around the undulating track of the Sachsenring with Ortmann having earlier claimed pole before translating that into a robust display of race craft with his younger co-driver sealing a lights to flag win, beating their #007 championship rivals who finished just off the podium in fourth.

Under the overcast skies of Sunday, it was the turn of Indy Dontjie to claim pole position in his #69 car just ahead of the #24 car of Sasse where he showed enough speed to keep the #24 car firmly behind. Trouble for one Aston Martin came just about the time of the opening of the pit stop window as the Trophy classed #48 Prosport car of Christopher Rohner tangled with the Theo Nouet driven Mercedes AMG GT4 to leave the German with front suspension damage in the gravel and short of any repeat of another class podium for his co-driver Yevgen Sokolovskiy.

With Leroux pitting early but the front two later, the turning point of the race came as Ortmann was able to pass the pit lane exiting Phil Dorr for the race lead thanks to his faster out lap against the #69 cars pitstop time.

Having already lost the lead to the #24 car, Phil Dorr would soon have brother Ben pushing hard for position when the #007 car finally did pass for second with just ten minutes remaining.

Finishing under local yellows for another car smashed into the wall, Sundays race would finish with an AMR 1-2-3-4 with the #24 taking another double to take the lead in the Championship with the #007 Dorr car in second, the #69 Dorr car in third and with the #95 Dorr car of Simon Connor-Primm and Nico Hantke getting their best result so far in fourth.

Championship wise, with just one round/two races and a maximum of fifty points being available, Hockenheim’s finale will witness a straightforward three-way battle between eth #24 Prosport car of Ortmann/Sasse on 154 points, the #007 Dorr car of Ben Dorr/Romain Leroux on 134 points and Ben Dorr/Indy Dontjie who are on 131 points.

It couldn’t be any closer if it tried.

Not a good word to say again about the DTM Trophy Series

Sunday, September 25, 2022

After the DTM Trophy Series went back on its weekend’s Balance of Performance adjustment to the dominant Toyota GR Supra of Tim Heinemann after his non points finish in Saturdays opener – the best thing that we can add about the whole event is that Jacob Riegel secured his third podium finish of the season with an opportunist P3 finish aboard his #63 Team Speed Monkeys Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4.

The Series is no longer worthy of the efforts and financial investment by drivers like Riegel and his teammate Nick Hanke when it continues to make poor decisions like this and fail to guard the lowering of driver standards by some who compete in it.

The series concludes in two weeks time at Hockenheim.

Two P2 finishes at Sebring improve the Flying Lizards AMR GT4 America chances at season finale

Sunday, September 25, 2022

Another SRO series going down to the wire at Indianapolis in two weeks’ time will be the GT4 America Series after three podium finishes pushed another Aston Martin Racing powered team into the title fray.

Going into this penultimate round of the series at the Sebring International Raceway, had the #8 Flying Lizard AMR Vantage GT4 crew of Elias Sabo and Andy Lee as the highest placed AMR team in the Pro-Am class, battling to stay in contact with the more dominant #120 Porsche of Adam Adelson and Elliott Skeer with the #15 Bsport Racing AMR of Bryan Putt and Kenton Koch just behind in fifth overall.

News from the circuit was that the #2 GMG Racing AMR of Jason Bell and Andrew Davis would not be running in GT4 America as they would be concentrating on the defence of their GT America GT4 title. This news was on top of the known absences from both the Heart of Racing and Zelus Motorsport with their two Vantage GT4’s.

During Saturdays one hour opener, the #55 API prepared AMR of Moisey Uretsky and Justin Piscitell however had obviously failed to notice the ‘gameplan’ as they again dominated the race – the same as Uretsky had done during the opening GT America round to claim their first season P1 double with their partially rebuilt car.

Completing a good day for the Aston Martin family was the Pro-Am podium lockout as the #8 Flying Lizard car of Sabo and Lee finished second, the #50 Chouest Povoledo Racing car of Ross Chouest and Aaron Povoledo in third with the #15 Bsport Racing AMR in fourth to help reinforce their Championship credentials particularly after the earlier demise of the #120 Porsche with technical issues.

With two drivers came obviously two Qualifying sessions and Sundays finale would be the turn again of the Pro drivers to runs their races first with Lee pipping all to the post with a second row start in fourth overall, with Koch just another row behind in sixth. The Chouest Povoledo and API cars however, would not fare so well in race 2 with Piscitell and Povoledo never featuring beyond their starting positions of P9 and P10 respectively.

Race 2 would start five abreast down the start straight before the leaders funnelled out into a more coherent approach to the twisty section of the course whilst others behind came into contact. Fortunately staying green, the #15 had jumped the #8 car for position and would run out the course of their Pro’s race in that order to the end of their stint.

Pit stops over and Putt and Sabo continued the inter AMR battle that had been started for them earlier but neither had enough speed to trouble the #47 Nolasport Porsche ahead of them although both were importantly ahead of the #120 Premier Racing Porsche.

As the faster silver class cars ran their battles ahead, it was fairly stalemate within Pro-Am right until the final lap of the race when the #15 car of Putt evidently slowed and allowed Sabo to pass easily to steal away the #15 cars (up until then) rightful P2 in class position at the death. Only just managing the finishing line itself, the #15 car would drop down to fourth in class but massively for them, behind the #120 Porsche.

Without seeing these results confirmed by the series, it would appear that the #15 cars technical glitch at the races death may become costly enough to remove them from any further Pro-Am Class championship contention as the series reconvenes at Indianapolis for the final two races of the season in two weeks’ time.

For the #8 Flying Lizard car, their pair of P2 class finishes may well be enough to keep them into a three-way battle to the prize at IMS.

A double double for two Aston Martin Racing runners in GT Americas visit to Sebring

Sunday, September 25, 2022

A success weekend at the ‘office’ for many of the Aston Martin Racing contingent of the GT America Series as class pole positions were mirrored with class wins which take the overall battle down to the season finale in just two weeks’ time.

With Jason Bell and his #2 GMG Racing prepared AMR Vantage still leading (just) the GT4 class going into the weekend’s events at Sebring, two more competitive rounds for the bronze ranked only driver GT3/GT4 series would open the GT4 Championship right up ahead of the season finale at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The man of the moment within Saturdays race opener would be the #55 API car with Moisey Uretsky aboard, after he suffered a significant accident during Free Practice which needed the team to work on it overnight to be ready for Qualifying and the later race.

Whatever they did to the car worked as Uretsky first claimed pole position before bringing his part bare carbon/part yellow liveried AMR home for another class win to unexpectedly bolster his chances within the Championship after the performances of those above him in the leader board.

Race results for Saturdays opener would be thrown into turmoil as multiple cars failed to finish the final lap with the #50 car of Ross Chouest amongst them as he would lose his apparent P4 finish on track to be eventually classified down in P11 whilst Bryan Putt would recover from his pit lane start (as his punishment for accident responsibility last time out at VIR) to finish fourth in class with the #2 car of Bell failing to finish after spinning off having just overtaken Elias Sabo for position with just three minutes of the race remaining.

Sundays race was equally as dominant at the head as Sabo and his #8 Flying Lizard AMR acquired class pole position through being fastest in race 1 to bring home a similar lights to flag win by the end of that forty-minute race.

Only experiencing pressure at the start with the weight of the pack bearing down on him for the opening corners, Sabo was soon able to distance himself from the chasing Aston Martins of Bell and Putt as the laps passed them all by.

A small tyre rub for Bell was an early scare for him as he too made space between himself and the then chasing #120 Championship leading Porsche as Uretsky would spend the rest of the race behind him leaving Bell to consolidate his position going into the final round of the season next month.

A poor event again for Chouest as his demise in race one was followed with a lowly P9 finish as we await confirmation of these results from race organisers before we can determine the state of play ahead of Indianapolis.

Runners up slot for D'Station Racing in the inaugural year of the Japan Cup in GT World Challenge Asia Series

Sunday, September 25, 2022

The D’Station Racing team signed off their 2022 GT World Challenge Asia season in the most emphatic way possible with a lights to flag race win at the finale of the SRO series at the Okayama Circuit in Japan earlier today.

Arriving at the fifth round of the series but only their fourth round of the inter series Japan Cup, the #47 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crew of Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii were never in competition for the top GT3 season honours but their performances on track could always have affected the aspirations of those who were.

With the wet weather fortunately passing the circuit by in time for the opening hour-long race yesterday, Hoshino’s third place starting position would unfortunately be unravelled with a poor get away at the rolling start, only to be later compounded with a spin after which Fujii would bring the car home in eighth.

For this morning final race of the season, Fujii had already qualified the car to the head of the pack to claim his second pole position of the season along with Sugo. Whilst the pressures of championship battles got the better of some as early as the opening lap, there was no stopping the #47 crew as they ended their GT World Challenge Asia AMR audition with their third podium and second race win of the season to finish the year fifth in the GT3 Teams Championship, third in the overall GT3 Drivers Championship and runners up in both the Japan Cup’s GT3 Drivers and Teams Championships.

That leaves the team just two more rounds of their Super Taikyu Series and final round of the World Endurance Championship to finish off their year.

Disaster at Spa ends the hopes of Bullitt Racing in the Le Mans Cup Series

Saturday, September 24, 2022

Something that was nothing short of a total disaster struck the Bullitt Racing team down earlier this afternoon as an incident on the way to the grid for todays penultimate round of the Le Mans Cup Series at Spa Francorchamps ended their GT3 crown aspirations in the armco barrier.

Arriving in Belgium earlier this week placed second in the GT3 drivers’ championship, the #99 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 of Stephen Pattrick and Valentin Hasse-Clot was looking ‘steady’ during the earlier test day and into yesterday’s Free Practice.

Having ended private testing at the head of the class in both sessions, only some unwanted close attention and damage caused from an LMP3 car blotted their copy book into the first Free Practice and Bronze Driver Test before the #99 car came back strong with another first in Free Practice 2.

Then as the weather deteriorated again just ahead of Qualifying, Pattrick would deliver a timely lap around the greasy track that would have allowed him to start from the second row of the GT3 grid.

However, an unseen incident for the #99 on the way around to the grid unfortunately resulted in the car being backed into the barrier to lose its rear wing (with probably more damage underneath than that too) to sadly end its Spa adventure and championship chase on the back of a low loader.

With the #99 never getting back into the race and with the three GMB Motorsport Honda’s locking out the GT3 podium come the end of today’s round, that effectively ends Bullitt Racings GT3 chances at the final round of the season at Portimao later next month.

Back to the GT Open fold for the Street Art Racing AMR team in Italy

Friday, September 23, 2022

The Belgian based Street Art Racing team make a return to the GT Open Series for their penultimate round of the season from the Temple of Speed at Monza in Italy.

Featuring amongst another grid of twenty-four comparable GT3 race cars, the bespoke liveried #007 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 of Swiss driver Pascal Bachmann makes a timely return to the series after business kept him and the team away from the race track over the previous round.

Indeed, having only raced at both Paul Ricard and most recently at the Hungaroring in early July, the ‘day job’ has very much kept the former GT4 European Series Am Class Champion away from the race seat of his latest acquisition – particularly after he has ran in those races as a solo driver.

That remains the same in Italy this weekend as Bachmann is one of two solo drivers within the Am Class ahead of this weekend’s two races.

Having just waited for the official entry list to confirm, the team's #007 AMR Vantage GT4 of Julian Darras and Jahid Fazal-Karim also makes a return to the GT Open Cup Series after their last round from the Hunfaroring back in July.

Like their sister car, their omission from a full season of series involvement precludes them from any championship contention and they will again see this event as driver development for their gentleman driver.
