GT2 Endurance Legend for sale

Friday, September 29, 2017

Just two weeks after competing in the new Masters Series Endurance Legends event at Spa Francorchamps, the former Villois Racing Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT2 finds itself looking for a new home.

Having last been sold just over two years ago for a cool £125,000  plus commission at the Aston Martin Works auction, the GT2-007 chassis car has only been seen fleetingly on track ever since and is only one of an apparent three remaining platforms from an original production cycle of ten cars. That rarity is being reflected in the sale price.

Who says you only make money on property?!!!!

Full listing details for the sale can be found HERE

Hopefully with the level now being shown in the fledgling Endurance Legends Series we may get to see more of this beauty?

Gunn shoots off again to China

Friday, September 29, 2017

Having made a towering impression for himself first time out in the China GT championship in Shanghai earlier this month, Beechdean AMR driver Ross Gunn will again be making the long haul flight over to middle China for the penultimate round of that championship next week.

Again joining the China Equity AMR team in the second of their Prodrive assisted AMR V8 Vantage GT4's, Gunn will be looking to improve upon results from last time where he claimed pole position first time out at the Shanghai International circuit before car eventually dropped to fourth after a technical issue for his co-driver in race one and an accident induced DNF (again for his co-driver) in race 2.

Hot on the heels of some GTE/GT3 testing at Silverstone today, Gunn flies out to rounds nine and ten of the twelve round championship from the Chengdu International Circuit in middle China this weekend for an event that takes place over the 3-5th October.

Solaris to miss out the remainder of the GT Open season? (UPDATED)

Friday, September 29, 2017

Very disappointingly but unfortunately not surprisingly, Italian squad Solaris Motorsport will again miss the latest and penultimate round of the International GT Open Series.

Having only swapped from their national GT series to the european championship just short of a year ago, their 2017 season has been an extremely difficult one to say the least in terms of competitive track time, car set up and performance ever since their massive, chassis destroying crash at Paul Ricard earlier in the year.

Since then the team has always been on the back foot, electing to skip rounds in favour of testing before what appeared to be a trouble free round at Silverstone last month - that was before the gremlins came back and again prematurely curtailed their second race of the weekend.

With this weekends round coming from their 'local' track of Monza it must have been a very difficult decision not to run at the event where co driver Mauro Calamia will now participate within a second  SPS Automotive Performance Mercedes.

That would suggest, even partly confirmed by lead driver Francesco Sini, that their 2017 endeavours may already be at an end ahead of the season finale at Barcelona at the end of October.

It will a shame to lose them too early!

** We have just seen that the team's new chassis #37 car is now up for sale on Racecardirect.com **

Oman Racing looking to see out Blancpain with more silverware

Wednesday, September 27, 2017

Blancpain Endurance Cup Pro-Am Champion Ahmad Al Harthy is eyeing yet more silverware when the 2017 season reaches its conclusion at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain this Sunday, 1st October, as he seeks to put the icing on the cake of a truly fabulous campaign with team-mate Jonny Adam.

Heading to the Barcelona track for the first time in his career, the Oman Racing driver is still on cloud nine after wrapping-up the Pro-Am drivers’ title and the Pro-Am entrants’ crown with one round to spare last time out during the prestigious Total 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium.

During the two-month break since the twice-round-the-clock spectacular, Al Harthy has been working hard behind the scenes to prepare as well as possible for the visit to Spain where he and the team are hoping to continue their outstanding 100% podium finishing record.

“It truly has been an amazing year for Oman Racing, to win the Pro-Am championship – especially doing so with one round to go – was incredible and an absolute dream come true for me personally, everyone at Oman Racing and all of our sponsors and supporters”, reflected the Muscat sportsman.

“Everything has gone so well this season, Jonny is an amazing team-mate to have and the guys from TF Sport who prepare the Oman Racing Aston Martin have done an incredible job. We’re determined to end the season on a high in Barcelona, it’s a new challenge for me but one I really am looking forward to. If we can make it five podiums from five races that really would be something special.”

Starting off the 2017 season perfectly, Al Harthy and Adam claimed a history making maiden Pro-Am victory for Oman Racing in round one at Monza in Italy and went on to add a hard-earned runner-up spot at Silverstone in the UK in round two at the wheel of the No.97 Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Oman Air, National Bank of Oman, Omantel, Barr Al Jissah and Amouage-backed Aston Martin.

Joined by Turkish racer Salih Yoluc with an expanded three driver line-up for the six-hour third round at Paul Ricard in France, the trio continued the podium momentum with another top two result before all attention turned to the blue riband Total 24 Hours of Spa.

Welcoming British driver Euan Hankey to the squad to team-up with Al Harthy, Adam and Yoluc, the quartet converted Adam’s stunning Pro-Am pole position into a magnificent second place finish at the end of 24 hours of grueling and very challenging racing.

Leading Pro-Am at the first points scoring juncture, six hours, the team held second at the halfway stage in the middle of the night before going on to record the history-making runner-up result and with it the 2017 championship.

“Spa was incredible”, added Al Harthy, “It’s such a huge challenge, both mentally and physically, so to achieve such an amazing result is testament to our hard work and preparation. We have to say a huge thank you to Salih and Euan, they were a big part of Jonny and I winning the championship, and now we’re looking to end the season in style. We’ll be giving it 100% as we always do.”

Following the Bronze test on Friday, 29th September, Free Practice will take place on Saturday, 30th September, ahead of Pre-Qualifying. On Sunday, 1st October, Final Qualifying will begin at 09.00 (local time) with the three-hour fifth round of the season getting underway at 15.00 (local time).

Seeing the British GT season out on a high

Wednesday, September 27, 2017

With the past six months having seemingly passed in a flash, last weekend saw the final round of the 2017 British GT Championship play itself out from Donington Park.

Sadly with no Aston Martin Racing team in the mix for any of the then undecided GT3 and GT4 championships all that was at stake was personally pride and to finish the job that many started way back at the turn of the year in a fitting and glorious style.

Things didn't exactly get off to a great start however with the last minute withdrawal of both MacMillan Racing GT3 and GT4 cars due to unforeseen circumstances leaving just TF Sport an Academy Motorsport to fill the voids in both classes.

Very mindful of the championship stakes for those immediately around them, both GT3 cars from TF Sport went out to dominate proceedings in both Free Practice and then Qualifying to claim the front two places for Sundays two hour race. Not to be out done, the #62 car of Matt Nichol-Jones and Will Moore also snatched the GT4 pole to make things a clean sweep for the marque.

Life in the old Vantage yet!!

With the Am Drivers starting the race, the biggest risk was for both cars to take each other out at the first corner and despite a little 'rubbing' going in all thankfully materialised out the other side Redgate to race another lap. Interrupting the TF Sport proceedings was the championship contesting Barwell Lamborghini of Jon Minshaw who split the AMR symmetry for a brief while before the pressure of the event caused him to spin out at the Fogarty Esses restoring the status quo.

That allowed Mark Farmer to doggedly defend his overall lead from team mate Derek Johnston in his new red liveried car for the entire length of their one hour minimum drive time with some great car craft  being on display from both.

Unfortunately for Will Moore, the reoccurrence of an old intermittent electrical issue abroad his V8 Vantage GT4 was causing him to periodically loose power, dropping positions all the time until an unfortunate Ginetta GT4 behind collided heavily with the rare of the #62 after one such event ending his own race and GT4 championship aspirations on the spot but at least the #62 was able to continue.

Just fifteen minutes later and only thirty minutes into the race what would later turn out to be a catastrophic failure of the cars gearbox casing saw the sveltely liveried #62 to come to a premature end after a brief oil fire on the side of the track - it was over and out for them.

Meanwhile, the two TF Sport cars were still racing hammer and tongs with the race decisive move coming as Farmer elected to pit on his hour mark leaving Johnston a clear track on which to do his own in lap unhindered. A ten second success penalty then applied against the #11 car pitstop after their result at the previous round at Brands Hatch allowed Jonny Adam to exist the pit lane now in the #1 car a pit lane length just ahead of the #11 car with Jon Barnes now at the wheel.

With racing of the highest calibre for the next hour that would be how the race would ultimate finish with a fine 1-2 for the Tom Ferrier led team - just six races too late to make anything of it!

Speaking with both Mark Farmer and Derek Johnston afterwards, both confirmed that with 'all planets aligning and everything else remaining equal' it would be their desire to return to the British GT Championship with the TF Sport team if at all possible. The only doubt seemed to be regarding whether or not AMR factory driver Jonny Adam would again be available to mentor Johnston.

With Johnston assuring us that despite his recent LMP3 test at Donington the other week he had absolutely no desire to follow the prototype formula as his body was too old for them and he had been spoiled by the AMR Vantage GT3 which has again proven itself to remain as a race winner despite its age.

And for Farmer - its like Jon Barnes said on the starting grid - "he's had unbelievable performance this weekend but there's always room for improvement!"

Hopefully see you next year guys!

Spa shenanigans make for a great ELMS finale

Wednesday, September 27, 2017

Going into the penultimate round of the European Le Mans Series with a healthy nine point lead and Qualifying on the front row for Sundays race, all look to be running along nicely for TF Sport ahead of the 4hrs of Spa-Francorchamps last weekend.

As with most multi-class racing however, not all the 35 cars entry had read the script and Spa soon became a operation of recovery for the GTE class leaders as early as turn one - lap one when front end damage soon relegated the #90 car of Euan Hankey, Salih Yoluc and Nicki Thiim to the back of the field for most of the race.

For the sister Aston Martin Racing runner from Beechdean AMR however, their recent run of misfortune in the Series was to come to an apparent end as Ross Gunn quickly powered his #99 Vantage GTE from the rear of the starting pack to be pushing for third in class within the first half of his opening stint.

With debris falling from the #90 car after unseen contact with an LMP3 car going into Le Source for the first time, Hankey was obviously immediately in trouble with his car under performing through lack of aero downforce, quickly loosing 3-4 seconds per lap to his class rivals up front.

Unfortunately for the race in general, poor driving again from parts of the LMP3 entry descended the remainder of the race in persistent bouts local and full course yellows with even two appearances from the safety Car - an unusual event these days in ACO rules racing. For the spectator, these interventions fragmented the race with safety car periods breeding the inevitable safety car periods but at least for the #90 car it slowed everything down.

Even by the time AMR works driver Nicki Thiim got into the car in the second hour of the race there was little he nor the team could do without consigning the car to a lengthy stop in the garage.

Both AMR cars did run the race with a revision to their normal driver roster with Bronze drivers Andrew Howard (#99) and Salih Yoluc (#90) both being the third driver of the sequence in their cars before both Gunn and Hankey returned to finish each cars race respectively.

Whilst Beechdean AMR were 'enjoying' their best race since the season opener at Silverstone, including hitting the front of the class on true pace alone thanks to some very determined driving from primarily Gunn and then Howard, the crew of the #90 were enduring several heart stopping moments where their car would stop out on track due to fair means or foul.

The best news for TF Sport came when the #77 Proton Porsche was unceremoniously punted off the track by another errant LMP3 causing them significant damage that would allow the #90 car to overtake it on track for a couple more crucial championship points.

By the end of the four hour race the #99 car crossed the line to end up grabbing the final step of the GTE class podium behind the winning #51 Spirit of Race Ferrari and second placed #66 JMW Ferrari.

From a championship perspective, going into the final round of the series next month in Portimao TF Sport retain the GTE lead from the JMW squad but now by just a single point but with another 26 points on offer next time out it is still mathematically possible for any of the top five cars being able to claim the 2017 title albeit with some needing an extra ordinary level of failure from the leaders of the class.

Although a very difficult race for TF Sport, they all displayed a honorary level of perseverance after their early damage whilst Beechdean drove 'like they stole it' for the entire race and proved that a fast pace in Qualifying is not everything!

Drive of the day - definitely Ross Gunn's opening stint.

A cracking weekend of motorsport to look forward to (updated)

Saturday, September 23, 2017

An that cracking weekend has already gotten off in a podium finishing way as the CMRT by Eurasia team secured another second place finish with their GT3 Am Class V12 Vantage GT3 in the first race of their penultimate round of the Blancpain GT Asia Series from Shanghai earlier today.

Looking closer to home, both TF Sport and Beechdean AMR have just thrashed it out for top honours in Qualifying ready for their penultimate round of the European Le Mans Series which happens tomorrow from the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. After some good Free Practice sessions yesterday and earlier today AMR factory driver Nicki Thiim has just placed his #90 TF Sport car on the front row of the GTE grid having just been pipped by the #77 Proton Porsche for the class honours.

In the #99 Beechdean AMR car, it was Ross Gunn having (not quite sure here) his first Qualifying attempt in a GTE car in this years ELMS series to start from P6 for tomorrows grid after it appears that the car again suffered from some limited running during this morning's final FP session compared to others.

With the real race pressure being on the three cars at the head of the field that starting position will leave the #99 with all to play for come tomorrow which is destined to be another cracker!

Finally, the weekend sees the final round of the British GT Championship from Donington Park. With the AMR field reduced to just three cars it appears that the two TF Sport V12 Vantage GT3's have bossed the timing board during Free Practice to finish P1 and P2 in each of the two sessions, graciously swapping places for each for each!

With none of the three cars involved in any of the undecided championships things are obviously a little more relaxed than those who face the 'winner takes all' situation for tomorrows race. The GT4 entry from Academy Motorsport looks also to be enjoying the warm autumnal conditions placing themselves in the top half dozen going into Qualifying later.

Unfortuneately, provisional results from VLN show the SP10 Avia Racing by Mathol Racing V8 Vantage GT4 as a non finisher after only completing 12 laps compared to the class winner clocking 20 and the SP8 #188 Aston Martin Vantage GT8 finishing P5 in class, 1 lap down to the class winner.

Let the good times race!

During British GT Qualifying a little while ago the #11TF Sport V12 Vantage of Mark Farmer and Jon Barnes secured the GT3 pole position whilst the #62 Academy car of Will Moore and Matt Nichol-Jones dully claimed their second GT4 Pole of the season with their V8 Vantage.

Spa - a pivotal round for all GTE cars in the ELMS

Thursday, September 21, 2017

The European Le Mans Series hits the iconic Spa Francorchamps circuit this weekend for the penultimate round of the season for the highly competitive GTE class with all six full season entries having a mathematical chance of listing the title.

TF Sport arrive at the home of Belgium motor racing with a reduced margin over the JMW Ferrari in second with thirteen points covering the top three. “We’ve got a busy weekend ahead,” said TF Sport Director Tom Ferrier. "We’ll be under pressure for a good result at Spa as we think the championship will almost certainly go down to the wire in Portimao. So as ever, the aim is secure a podium and if possible finish ahead of our main two rivals".

The Beechdean AMR will also be looking at Spa for no less than a class win to bolster any prospects that they have of retaining their 2016 title after a disappointing show last time out at Paul Ricard after technical issues.

We know that the #99 Beechdean car undertook a brief shakedown/test at a collective AMR/AML test day at the Snetterton circuit this week before progressing over to Spa so at least drivers Ross Gunn and (?) Darren Turner will be happy with the feel of the car after a quick bash around the Norfolk 300 circuit.

Going into the event, TF Sport lead with 77 points whilst Beechdean AMR lay fourth with 48 points but with a point for pole and 25 for a class win all is there to play for.

New Vantage GTE testing continues apace

Thursday, September 21, 2017

Two weeks after being videoed testing at Rockingham, Aston Martin Racing's new for 2018 Vantage GTE has continued along its steep development curve this week with a two day private test at Snetterton.

Using a single process of driver elimination, it appeared that just Darren Turner tested the new AMG powered car at Rockingham with the four other GTE Pro drivers all either holidaying or at home somewhere in the Americas.

This week, and using the same simple process we believe that this weeks testing duties were undertaken by Darren Turner, Jonny Adam and Marco Sorensen who visit to the Norfolk track must be his first since his early Formula Ford days?

Observing the test from a discreet distance (no spy photos attached here), all we can say is that the loss of the old throaty V8 block and been replaced with a note that will in no way be a disappointment to any AMR enthusiast and will be quite distinctive in its own way. Also, our crude lap timing and referencing back across other GT platform lap times show that the new car is no slouch either!!

The future's bright - the future's the New Vantage GTE!

Two Astons again at VLN 7

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Like most of the races since the flagship twenty four hour event earlier this year, just two Astons again fly the flag monist the 167 entries at this weekends seventh round of the VLN Series from the infamous Nordschleife this weekend.

Flying high since their SP10 class win last time out will be the #188 Mathol Racing prepared Avia racing V8 Vantage GT4 who's driver line will extend to three drivers of this race with the addition of Hendrik Still.

The #134 Aston martin Lagonda Vantage GT8 also makes a return after is DNF at the last round when early race damage sustained by a spinning car on the then wet track came back to roost and eliminate the car just before the end of the four hour race.

Again, the driver line changes within the car with Vincent Kolb being joined for this weekend by Alexander Kolb and David Thilenius.

A reduced AMR count for British GT finale at Donington

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

The news from MacMillan Racing today sadly leaves the total Aston Martin entry for Sunday's two hour, championship deciding race down to just three cars from both TF Sport and Academy Motorsport.

Neither team have unfortunately anything more than personal pride to race for at Donington after previous results and non finishes have already ruled them out of contention for any of the GT3/GT4 class championships. All cars will however be keen to avoid any involvement on track that may affect the remaining championships that need to be resolved by the end of Sunday's race.

Academy Motorsport will see out their return to the British GT GT4 Championship on a high following   on from their best result of the season in the SRO's parallel European GT4 Northern Cup championship where Matt Nichol-Jones and Will Moore secured a brace of second placed finishes at that series finale at the Nurburgring last weekend.

For that team, both the British GT and European GT4 championships have been a somewhat disjointed affair after a series of mechanical and accident induced DNF's have left them mid table in the GT4 Team's Championship.

The pair of highly decorative V12 Vantage GT3's of TF Sport arrive at the circuit with just an inter-team battle to settle with the #1 car of Derek Johnston and Jonny Adam leading their sister #11 car of Jon Barnes and Mark Farmer by just 4.5 points in the GT3 Drivers Championship.

The #1 car will also see out the season with a revision to its livery, sporting a shiny red metallic look all in contrast to the #11 car's shiny blue metallic livery of old!!

The full timetable to this event can be found HERE

MacMillan AMR miss British GT finale

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

The British GT Championship have this afternoon confirmed that MacMillan Racing have indeed withdrawn both of their cars from the two hour finale to the 2017 championship at Donington this weekend.

Previously fielding a very successful brace of a V12 Vantage GT3 and a V8 Vantage GT4, the final round at Donington would have sealed yet another successful season for the team in only its second year of racing with Jack Mitchel and James Littlejohn claiming the GT3 Silver Cup prize at their first time of asking amongst numerous podiums for both cars.

As yet we are not aware as the reasons behind this action.

On a small good news front however, is the confirmation that Will Philips shall still be racing at Donington, this time alongside ex. MacMillan racing driver Matthew Graham in one of the In2Racing McLaren 570s GT4's.

By the fact that Philips has had time to arrange such a deal signifies that the MacMillan withdrawal had been on the cards for some time before now.

Disappointing news indeed!

Dogged persistance in the desert pays off for Aston Martin Racing

Monday, September 18, 2017

Aston Martin Racing has triumphed in Texas, as Paul Dalla Lana (C), Pedro Lamy (P) and Mathias Lauda (A) took GTE Am victory in the Six Hours of Circuit of The Americas.

After taking pole position yesterday, their second win of the 2017 season ensured the trio both maximised their points haul for the weekend and regained the lead in both the team and drivers GT Am championships.

After an early spin following contact from a rival cost Dalla Lana the lead early on, the trio fought valiantly to pursue victory. A safety car released for barrier repairs after an on-track incident at the half way mark offered the #98 V8 Vantage GTE an opportunity to close the deficit to the leaders and in the final hour, Lamy made a move up the inside of turn one to reclaim first place.

Lamy said, “This was a special race and the perfect weekend. The heat was really intense inside the car but we were fighting so hard for the victory you just completely forget that. We had good pace throughout the race and the safety car helped to bring us back into contention. I knew I was going to have to make the move out on track and I managed to keep my move into the first corner nice and clean. It’s so good that we’ve made it back in the lead for the championship and we just need to keep these performances up for the rest of the season. I can’t wait now to get back to Fuji in four weeks’ time”.

In GTE Pro, the team’s #95 of Nicki Thiim (DN) and Marco Sorensen (DN) and the #97 of Daniel Serra (BR), Darren Turner (GB) and Jonny Adam (GB) finished 4th and 5th respectively, with the Danes just 9.2 seconds behind second place.

Paul Howarth, Aston Martin Racing Team Principal said, “This has been a fantastic result in extremely testing conditions for Paul, Pedro and Mat. To be back in the lead of the GTE Am championship after a difficult Le Mans shows the consistency they’ve had throughout the rest of the season and we’ll be looking to provide them with the opportunity to seal that championship win over the final three rounds of this championship”.

He added, “This is the final time that we will race here at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. It has been a fantastic track for us over the past years and thank you to all the fans who’ve joined us here this weekend. We hope many of them can join us in Sebring for next year’s WEC super-season”.

Aston Martin Racing returns to the FIA World Endurance Championship for the 6 Hours of Fuji on Sunday 15 October.

Miedecke's new chariot earns them a prize first time out

Sunday, September 17, 2017

Just a couple of weeks after taking delivery of their latest Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 acquisition, Australian based Miedecke Stone Motorsport scored their first racing podium in the car this weekend.

Having sourced this early iteration of Vantage GT4 from somewhere in Asia (they are not saying where) a couple of weeks ago, Andrew Miedecke tested the then multi-coloured car at the Queensland Raceway in readiness for Round 7 of their state New South Wales Motor Racing Championship event from their local Sydney Motorsport Park track.

Its the second time this year that Miedecke Snr has competed in the state championships, last time out was back in May when he shared a similar Vantage GT4 (which they had secured on behalf of a client) with tiptop racer Jeremy Gray.

Having elected to sit out the entire Australian Endurance Championship this year, recent events are being to show the beginnings of a ramping up from the team in readiness for next years Bathurst 12Hr event where the team hope to enter two V12 Vantage GT3's as well as their V8 Vantage GT4.

24H Series at CoTA - interesting entry list detail

Sunday, September 17, 2017

Thanks to a cryptic invitation placed upon social media by Radio Le Mans last night to look at the provisional entry list for the Creventic 24H Series Endurance Series inaugeral event at the Circuit of the America's in November - there is certainly some very interesting entries.

Firstly and we have known for some time now that Pirelli World Challenge entry De La Torre Motorsport have entered their Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 but have however confirmed a second driver in experienced LMP3/GT3 racer Ate De Jong who will be join Jorge De La Torre in the A6 class car.

The most interesting revelation in the entry detail is however the presence of the Aston Martin Lagonda V8 Vantage GT8 in what will be its first racing adventure outside of continental Europe. Although there is yet no driver detail it is safe to assume that Aston Martin's David King isn't simply going to let his one-off pride and joy be raced by any old Tom, Dick or Harry - so thats one to watch.

To date, the car has performed extra ordinarily well (mainly within the VLN series) where it has finished on the its class podium many times with many drivers as well as winning its class at the ADAC N24 race earlier this year.

Additionally, the list also details the return of the Speedworks prepared AMR V8 Vantage GT4 into the event. Driver details are again yet to be confirmed but this will be the first Creventic event for that car in over a year as it has been available for sale for much of that period.

If nothing else, this news has placed that 24H Series event firmly within our diary to watch!

Battered and bruised - Aston Martin Racing takes Am class win at CoTA

Sunday, September 17, 2017

They say that "only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" and that was precisely the case in Austin, Texas yesterday for the start of 6 hours of the Circuit of the America's.

With the timetable for the event having shifted back slightly for 2017, there would no longer be any racing into the (cooler) night as before with the race starting under the full intensity of the midday sun, leaving the teams to deal with the uncomfortable mid thirties ambient and high forties track temperatures.

For the Aston Martin Racing GTE Pro cars, the race would be the first upon Dunlop's revised hard rubber compound and although they didn't perform particularly well in the 'mad dash' qualifying runs of Friday it was hoped that they would come into their own during the much longer racing cycles during the race.

From Qualifying, the #95 GTE Pro car of Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen would again be at the head of the field for the team starting from third on the grid behind the #71 AF Corse and #67 Ford. The Valero liveried #97 car of Darren Turner, Jonny Adam and Daniel Serra would start from P6 but importantly ahead of the two Porsche 911's who were also fielding new 'joker' rubber (from Michelin) for the event. Following own from their domineering performance throughout the three Free Practice sessions, the #98 GTE Am car of Paul Dalla-Lana, Pedro Lamy and Mathias Lauda would be starting their part of the grid from pole.

At the outset of the race things were looking rather good for Team AMR with Thiim already having snatched the GTE Pro class lead from the 488 Ferrari on the opening lap and with the #98 maintaining its grid position relative to its class but for Serra in the #97, the car would quickly fall down beyond the two Porsches to circulate only a few hundred metres in front of their AM class car.

Like Mexico, the team had decided to start the race with Paul Dalla-Lana behind the wheel thus allowing him to get one of his stints out of the way in the comparative cooler temperatures of the afternoon. Ten minutes in however, ex AMR GTE Am driver Francesco Castellacci passed the Canadian for position in a clean move at the final corner before he then came under the close attention of the #61 Clearwater Racing Ferrari. Although later on Dalla-Lana would contest the legality of the move, a slight mistake from him lead to an unavoidable rear impact between the #98 and the #61which left the #98 spinning out onto the track apron before being able to rejoin, fortunately having lost just one position - but there was damage.

Even before Dalla-Lana could catch his breathe from his own inter class battles, three battling LMP2's forced the #98 to take more collision avoiding action, loosing him yet more time on track - it was going to be one of those days at the office for the #98!

Meanwhile, Serra had at least found someone to battle with in the form of the the #66 Ford GT who had again found themselves towards the rear of the field but and just like the whole WEC season so far, the #97 just didn't seem to have anything left under the bonnet to pass the Ford by!

Whilst the #95 continued to frustrate the two AF Corse Ferrari's at the head of the GTE Pro field, Dalla-Lana had to bring his #98 car in for repairs to his rear defuser that was damaged in his earlier incident. Terrific work from the team saw that car in and out of the garage in under a minute and with a full service later would see Mathias Lauda take the car out. After a further quick visit to the pits for minor adjustments a few laps later however would see the #98 car plum last.

Over the next few hours the #95 Pro car of Thiim and Sorensen would continue to struggle to get back into contention with the two Ferrari's who were at times leading the class by nearly thirty seconds, a period during which would also see the two Porsche's come into the equation for the top three positions.

On a more positive note, the #98 was at least progressing itself up through its class to be P2 at the half way point of the race.

By this time all three drivers in the #97 car had been on track. Looking at the timing chart at the time the car wasn't massively slower than its sister car - maybe around a second a lap but that alone, lap after lap easily contributed to its then 60 seconds deficiency to the class leader on track. Was/is the three driver set up in the #97 its continued achilles heel as we can't believe that it has been carrying technical issues for race after race??

As the race entered its final hour the #95 was still the leading AMR is it continued to struggle to maintain its proximity on track to the leading Ferrari's and Porsche's 48 seconds ahead whilst the #97 was still a further one minute behind them but at least the #98 had recovered to retake the lead of the Am Class despite its multiple unscheduled stops as most of the GTE teams prepared themselves for their final - 'splash and dash' stops.

With half an hour remaining the AM Championship leading #77 Dempsey Proton car limped back into the garage with smoke emitting from under the engine compartment - if the #98 could maintain its position on track that result would have huge effect on their championship standings.

Despite a puncture for the class leading Ferrari inside the last ten minutes of the race, the #95 would eventually finish P4 after their long, hard and hot battle on track with the #97 car finishing (importantly for the Team Championship) ahead of the poorly BoP'd Ford GT's and the race penalised #91 Porsche in P5.

The note of the day however goes to the drivers and crew of the #98 GTE Am class who secured their second race win of the season beating its nearest class rival (the #61 Clearwater Ferrari) by nearly 50 seconds. That would be impressive in its own right but to consider that the car was spun around, had two unscheduled stops for car repairs and tinkering in addition to its normal racing woes is simply outstanding.

This result indeed lifts the #98 to the head of the GTE Am Team's Championship, ahead of the #77 Dempsey Proton team by just 4 points as all the teams set their sights of Fuji in a months time.

Well done everyone.
