#TeamAMR move on to VIR for round three of SRO America

Monday, May 31, 2021

It’s the third round of the SRO America family of races this weekend from the beautiful Virginia International Raceway as sixteen GT3 cars from the GT World Challenge America Series join up in the paddock with twenty-nine GT4 cars from the GT4 America Series and further twenty-four GT3 and GT4 cars that make up the GT America Series.

Now five weeks since they last all battled out their respective races from the Circuit of the Americas, few of the seven Aston Martin Racing Customer and Partner teams that help to make up this colossal grid have been resting on their laurels, testing hard as many still have work to do to get themselves up to where they want to be.

The Notlad Racing with RS1 team unfortunately claimed the most ‘column inches’ in race reports from CoTA last time out after a high-speed barrel roll destroyed one of Matt Dalton’s AMR Vantage GT4’s in the first GT4 America race before seriously damaging the other in the second of the GT America races. From our own social media ‘chats’ with Dalton after the event, he confirmed that he was otherwise OK other than a bit bruised in both body and in wallet as one car was obviously a write off but at least the other was repairable.

We are not aware if his recently acquired chassis replacement from Prodrive will be with the team in time for them to make use of it at VIR or not!

In the amateur only GT America Series, CoTA was a good event for both the GMG Racing car of Jason Bell who secured his first double with a P2 and P3 finish as well as the #25 Heart of Racing car of Gray Newell who progressed from a P7 finish in R1 through to a P4 position in R2 – a great continuation of improvement from the otherwise novice racing driver.

In the larger grid of the GT4 America Series and despite there being six AMR’s listed within it, only the #062 Dexter Racing of brothers Ryan and Warren Dexter came away from Texas with any silverware after another P3 Silver Cup finish for them in R2.

The Notlad Racing #00 car obviously failed to finish in R1 nor did the #2 GMG Racing car of Bell and Andrew Davis in R2. Out of the other five Pro-Am entered cars, it was the #59 WR Racing car of Paul Terry/Brandon Davis and the #15 Bsport Racing car of Kenton Koch/Bryan Putt who otherwise had the more consistent of meetings for #TeamAMR with two goo finishes apiece, unfortunately just off the podium each time.

The remaining #24 Heart of Racing car for Newell and Ian James continued along Newell’s learning curve and should improve exponentially from now on as driver coach James has since passed over on his IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship seat in the teams AMR Vantage GTD to factory driver Ross Gunn to see out that season – in theory giving the son of the team owner more time to develop in the two SRO series in which he races this year.

Finally, and certainly by no means least sees the #12 Ian Lacey Racing AMR Vantage GT3 of Drew Stavely and Frank Gannett return after two very different races from CoTA – one under torrential rain, red flagged before the end because of track conditions mirrored by a second race under clear blue sky and sunshine.

Having had Prodrive engineers and technicians in attendance again at the circuit in Texas, the team says that they again learned lots more about the car both in set up and in race trim to be able to travel to VIR on their own to a circuit (hopefully) more suited to the cars characteristics than Sonoma and CoTA. Featuring only a bronze and silver graded driver in a highly competitive Pro-Am class, the team hope that their inter race develop so far will allow them to improve upon the P8 in class positions earned last time out.

Being SRO sanctioned series, all three series will have their two races streamed live via their respective social media channels. VIR is a beautifully unique circuit in the USA but despite that, the racing there never fails to disappoint.

Another podium and retention of class lead after 6Hrs of Le Castellet for Garage 59

Monday, May 31, 2021

Garage 59 continues to lead the GT World Challenge Europe Pro-Am Championship after taking a podium finish at the Circuit Paul Ricard 1000kms. It was the #188 Aston Martin Vantage of Alexander West, Chris Goodwin and Jonny Adam that took third place in the Pro-Am class at the end of the six-hour race at Le Castellet.

Valentin Hasse-Clot, Alex MacDowall and Nicolai Kjærgaard had an arduous time in the #159 Vantage as they had to contend with a hard to handle car due to front splitter damage early on in the race.

The team’s performance in Saturday morning’s Qualifying session was faultless. With grid positions set from the aggregate fastest times from each of the three drivers in each car, it is vital that every driver has a good run. A thrilling session resulting in pole position in both the Silver and Pro-Am classes for the Garage 59 Aston Martins.

The performance of the drivers of the #159 Vantage was so strong that their Silver class pole position was also ninth place overall from the 47 cars that took the start.

Hasse-Clot took the start in the #159 Vantage and held onto the Silver class lead throughout the first hour of the race. In the #188, Goodwin dropped to second but only when a Pro-Am class challenger straight-lined a corner. They handed over the driving duties to MacDowall and West at the start of the second hour with West starting a strong double stint where he held onto second in Pro-Am and MacDowall also holding second but in the Silver class.

When sunset arrived at the halfway mark of the race, Kjærgaard was halfway through a double stint in the #159 Vantage, still running second in class. In the #188 Vantage it was time for Jonny Adam to jump in.

Remarkably the race stayed green for the first four hours but as darkness fell, so did the first Full Course Yellow. It couldn’t have been more badly timed for the #188 crew.

Once the race got back underway, Goodwin was in the #188 Aston Martin and MacDowall was back onboard the #159, both running in third place in their respective classes. For the final hour they handed back over to Adam and Hasse-Clot. Unfortunately for Jonny the #188 was too far adrift of the first and second placed Pro-Am runners so despite a spirited final hour, he crossed the line in third place. The #159 was now really struggling and Hasse-Clot could only hang on until the end, finishing ninth in the Silver class; a result hardly befitting the pace shown in Qualifying.

“As we continue to develop the Garage 59 team we approached this race very well prepared and our strong practice and qualifying pace reflected that,” said Goodwin. “However, it’s the race that matters and our race pace wasn’t quite as strong. The #188 Vantage took a bit of a beating and finally the timing of our penultimate stop under a Full Course Yellow cost us dearly. In the end we are disappointed with a podium position, which reflects the team’s high expectations. You can’t win them all but we enter every race trying to do so.

“The Silver car demonstrated equally strong pace in the run up to the race itself and pole in its class was a great performance from all three drivers,” he continued. “When you put a Silver car that far up the grid the racing is fierce and the lightest of contact on top of the aggressive kerbs here inflicted some damage to the car’s front splitter early on in the race, which developed and finally unravelled entirely by the end of the race. The drivers all pushed as hard as their now aerodynamically-challenged car would allow but finally, the end result was disappointing after such a strong weekend.”

The next endurance race for the GT World Challenge Europe teams is the 24 Hours of Spa in late July. Look out for an announcement coming tomorrow about that! Next up for the team are two weekends of Sprint Cup racing, the first taking place at Zandvoort in Holland on 19-20 June.

Single AMR bullet from PROsport Racing in the ADAC Total N24 gun

Monday, May 31, 2021

Continuing the extremely busy race weekend this week will be the ADAC Total 24H Race around the infamous Nordschleife and Nürburgring circuits in Germany.

Despite the 125 teams scheduled to at least start this iconic event, only one team will sport an Aston Martin Racing platform despite three AMR factory drivers also in attendance but with different teams and race machinery.

Having slowly developed their client base in the NLS Series under the watchful eye of their ‘resident’ professional driver sees locally based PROsport Racing again enter one of their AMR Vantage GT4’s again for their drivers Guido Dumarey, Maxime Dumarey, Alex Walker and Michael Hess who return for another attack on the race.

Having entered their #176 car during the two rounds of the NLS season raced so far as well as the N24 Qualification race undertaken earlier this month, the team will be looking to improve upon their finish in the race of last year of P49 having ran an almost identical driver crew aboard their SP10 (GT4) class car.

Results so far this season in the NLS have been encouraging with a P3 class finish in NLS2 and a P6 class finish in NLS3 after the opening round was snowed off on the day of the opening race. The team went on to finish P2 in class at the Qualifying race earlier this month.

First officially timed sessions for the event start at lunchtime on Thursday 3rd June before the start of the 24hr race itself at 15:30hrs local on Saturday 5th.

Four Aston's with a new name in GT Cup's visit to Snetterton

Monday, May 31, 2021

The third round of the GT Cup Championship visits our local circuit at Snetterton this weekend coming with four Aston Martin Racing cars scheduled to be present, and some with an adjusted driver line up from last time out.

Mike Brown and Matt Manderson return with their AMR Vantage GT3 after a relatively successful season debut in the opening round of the British GT Championship at Brands Hatch two weeks ago, having skipped the opening round of the GT Cup at Donington earlier in April. The team did race at the adapted second round of the season at Brands Hatch at the start of May, but the team do appear to be using the GT Cup calendar as an active race/test scenario before their selected round entry into British GT but their participation is welcome none the less.

Full season entries from Flowers Motorsport, Whitebridge Motorsport and Century Motorsport however, all come back with the sole purpose of trying to win their respective GTH class with their AMR Vantage GT4 platforms.

All three teams lay within the top six in class and two out of the three will feature differing co-drivers than first stated at the start of the season as 2019 British GT GT4 Champion as Tom Canning joins James Guess and his second placed in class #82 Flowers Motorsport in lieu of Darren Turner who will be racing at the ADAC Total N24 in Germany this weekend. Canning comes to Norfolk 'fresh' from his GT4 European Series exploits from Paul Ricard of last weekend.

Then the sixth placed in class #15 Century Motorsport prepared car of David Holloway will again be joined by their driver coach Bradley Ellis as Adam Hatfield sadly continues to be absent through personal reasons.

That leaves the #72 AMR of a solo Chris Murphy who presently lies P5 in the GTH class having swapped to a 2019 specification AMR Vantage GT4 prior to the Brands Hatch round from his older 2016 generation GTB classed Aston.

The #52 Deranged Motorsport AMR Vantage GT4 of Matt Lewis and Ollie Brown again continues to be absent from the entry list and has not been since the car failed during the second race of the opening round at Donington Park, and despite Matt Lewis being named within the AMR Drivers Academy 2021 intake just a couple of weeks ago.

Unlike the previous round at Brands Hatch where the GT Cup grid competed just a single 50-minute pit stop punctuated race, the Snetterton round reverts back to a traditional three race format over both Saturday and Sunday. Also, and unlike the last round at Brands, fans are permitted into the circuit at Snetterton but tickets do have to be purchased in advance as they will not be available at the gate.

Lachenauer/Gazeau show the potential as Gomar and Herr earn the prizes in GT4 European Series

Sunday, May 30, 2021

Whilst it was the Silver Cup #27 AGS Events Racing crew of Cesar Gazeau and Konstantin Lachenauer who were the more consistent, it was their sister #89 Am class crew of Nicolas Gomar and Eric Herr who stole the headlines at the second round of the GT4 European Series from Paul Ricard today.

In a change to their normal timetable, Saturday saw all forty-two teams set both Qualifying times yesterday for a double race header today leaving little room for repairs in-between if needed.

An early start was in store for race 1 this morning with the #89 AGS Events car of Gomar taking the highest starting position of all six Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s in P3 with fellow Am class runner Marcus Lungstrass close behind in P6 in his #18 Racing One AMR.

With so many cars racing into the funnelling effect of the opening corners there were few incidences on the opening lap although Lungstrass did manage to get in front of Gomar by the end of the opening lap to take the class lead but neither could capitalise further as they were held up by a squabbling P3 and P4 cars.

Gazeau had quietly made his way up from his starting P13 position to change over to Lachenauer from P8 overall at the halfway mark as the pitting Am Class Aston’s handed over to their lesser experienced drivers. The #55 Mirage Racing Aston had already suffered from a post Qualifying penalty that would see both Ruben Del Sarte and co-driver Tom Canning struggle to clear the midfield of the pack all race.

For the #45 AGS Events car of Hugo Conde and Akhil Rabindra, their lack of fortunate during the opening meeting of the season at Monza sadly continued as (apparent) accident damage just after Rabindra took to the wheel in P23 overall saw their car grind to a steaming stop along the pit straight.

Herr and Henrik Lyngbye-Pedersen (now in the #18) were both still running at the front of the Am class – that was until two cars sandwiched the Dane going into a corner to present him with an unwarranted puncture from which they car would ultimately finish a lap down.

Herr meanwhile, would hang on to claim their best finish of the season so far, with the #27 AGS car coming home in P8 for some vital championship points with the #55 Mirage coming home P12.

For Sunday’s second race of the day, eyes were looking skyward as black clouds had come down from the mountains to hang ominously over the circuit.

This time, Lachenauer was the front running Aston in P13 with Canning ‘still’ close behind in P16. A new front to the #45 AGS car of Rabindra supported the front-end contact as the basis of their race 1 exit as the Indian would start from P23 whilst the three Am Class Astons would start towards the rear of the grid.

Another clean opening lap confirmed that the performance of the Aston was not quite where it could have been despite them circulating quicker than they did at this event last season.

An early spin for Herr would seemingly ruin his chances of any repeat podium and another great stint from Lachenauer kept him and his #27 towards the front of the pack albeit not quite quick enough to challenge for the podium. Canning would be one of the first cars to pit – handing the red Mirage car back over to Del Sarte so that that AMR Drivers Academy driver could get in more race time.

With all the stops complete, Gazeau would maintain his cars lead position for the marque whilst the #45 car of Conde would slowly slide down the order as the faster and more experienced drivers behind slowly came through.

With the threat of rain long gone, the race meeting finished under fine spring sunshine with the #89 AGS Am car surprising us all with a late charge to steal a P3 finish in class to go with their earlier class win. The #27 crew would finish a fine P5 in class with the #55 in P10.

Next stop for the Series is at Zandvoort in mid-June.

Double podium for AMR runners at Rd 2 North Island Endurance Series

Saturday, May 29, 2021

A highly entertaining second round of New Zealand’s North Island Endurance Series left the #52 Heart of Racing Aston Martin Racing team having to be satisfied with a second-place finish at the end of today’s three hour race from the Hampton Downs circuit.

Having qualified second behind the #1 McLaren 650S and with light rain beginning to fall as the cars assembled on the grid, it didn’t take Darren Kelly more than the length of the pit straight before taking the lead before gapping the chasing pack by some considerable margin and lapping the #111 AMR Australasia Vantage GT8R car by as early as the tenth minute.

Running as deep as the seventy eighth minute, Kelly pitted to swap over to Alex Ribera before a Safety Car period for a stranded car all but destroyed their race lead soon after their first stop. The restart lap then allowed the new generation #33 Audi R8 to come through into P2 to begin what would become a challenging time for Riberas with just an hour remaining.

Pass and counter passes were made between the #52 and #22 cars as each battled for the lead before ultimately the #22 car broke the tow and made it’s get-away and through their final stop of the race to claim the race win over the #52 car.

Without any real class competition, the #111 Vantage GT8R of Steve Harrison and Shane Murland finished the race P6 overall as fastest finisher behind the other GT3 class cars – so it wasn’t all bad!!

Both Aston’s now lead their respective classes at the halfway stage of the season.

Time now to plan their races ahead of tomorrows GT4 European Series double header

Saturday, May 29, 2021

An interesting spread of Qualifying places earlier for the six Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 crews ahead of tomorrow’s two races that form the second round of the GT4 European Series from Paul Ricard, France.

With only one podium position between then at last month’s opening round at Monza, all will be looking for better performances tomorrow as both races will take place (this weekend only) on Sunday in order to make way for the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup 6hr race into the night that the GT4 series again support.

With half the AMR crew grid also candidates within AMR’s latest intake of drivers into the Drivers Academy, it was the Am class #89 AGS Events Racing car of Nicolas Gomar who was the quickest Aston in Q1, claiming a P3 start in tomorrow’s first race with Marcus Lungstrass and his #18 Am class Racing One Aston close behind in P7.

The first of the Silver Cup Aston runners was Cesar Gazeau and his #27 AGS Events car in P13 with a Tom Canning coached Ruben Del Sarte P18 in his #55 Mirage Racing car. Hugo Conde’s #45 AGS car starts from P29 overall with Pascal Bachmann’s Street Art Racing #7 car towards the rear in P37 out of the 42 cars that set a Q1 time.

In Q2 for tomorrow afternoons race, the #27 AGS car of this time Konstantin Lachenauer was this time the fastest Aston crew Qualifying P14 overall with Tom Canning P16 and Akhil Rabindra P23 in his #45 AGS car. With the two amateur drivers now in their respective #7 and #89 cars, it was unsurprising to see them towards the rear of the grid in P32 and P39 respectively.

Again, fully live streamed on the series social media channels, race 1 begins at 09:50hrs and Race 2 at 15:35hrs local for their two, one-hour long races.

At the head of their class for Garage 59 at the GT World Challenge Europe 6 hr from Paul Ricard

Saturday, May 29, 2021

Where better to start a race than at the front of your group, and that is precisely what the Garage 59 Aston Martin Racing team have done this morning by claiming a double pole position at Paul Ricard in the south of France during Qualifying for this evenings six hour, second round of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup.

During the weekend’s earlier Free Practice sessions, both the #159 Silver Cup entry of Valentin Hasse-Clot, Alex MacDowall and Nicolai Kjaergaard and the #188 Pro-Am entry of Alex West, Chris Goodwin and Jonny Adam were immediately on the pace at the front end of the forty-seven car entry with their AMR Vantage GT3’s before going into this morning’s individual Qualifying runs that culminated in both cars claiming their respective Silver Cup and Pro-Am class pole positions.

Starting this evening six hour – 1000km race from P9 overall and several cars ahead of the next car in class should give the #159 crew a much-needed gap they need to set an early pace in the ultra-competitive class after a disappointing end to their season opener at Monza last month.

The #188 Pro-Am meanwhile will be starting from P24 overall and again, several cars ahead of the next in class as they look to replicate their class win at Monza.

The race itself starts at 18:00hrs local and is of course streamed live and free on the series social media channels.

TF Sport confirms British GT3 return at Silverstone 500

Thursday, May 27, 2021

Never has an announcement been so welcome to hit our in-box than this morning’s confirmation that TF Sport will indeed be making a return to the British GT Championship this season, albeit for just the blue ribband event at Silverstone at the end of June with not one – but two Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s.

Incredibly busy this year with their World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series endeavours see’s Tom Ferrier’s team confirm a two-car entry into what will be the second round of the British GT season, at the Silverstone 500 over the weekend of the 26/27th June with four drivers already well known to the team and AMR in general.

Reigning WEC GTE Pro Champion Marco Sorensen makes his first racing return since securing the WEC crown last year in a Vantage GT3 that he will share with Norfolk racer Bonamy Grimes. We will remember Grimes from his Asian Le Mans entry with Red River Sport’s Jonny Mowlem aboard one of TF Sport’s V12 Vantage GT3’s back in 2018 before they progressed up to the WEC themselves last season.

They in turn will be joined by two drivers who competed in this event last year but with different drivers and teams. Today also sees TF Sport confirm that Italian racer Giacomo Petrobelli with partner up with AMR junior driver Charlie Eastwood aboard the team’s second of two Pro-Am entries for the Silverstone 500 after the Italian raced with AMR Academy winner Tom Canning last year.

“It’s good to be back on home soil during a season full of international campaigns,” said team boss Tom Ferrier, “We have proved ourselves in this championship over the years and with two solid driver pairings, it will be interesting to see where we fare amongst this season’s competition. I’m pleased to have both Bon and Giacomo back with the team and we will be pushing for strong results from them both.”

This welcome news takes the expected Aston Martin Racing headcount up to four cars with the full season  entries from Beechdean AMR in GT3 and Newbridge Motorsport in GT4 already taking part.

All eyes look to Paul Ricard this weekend for Rd 2 GT World Challenge Europe and GT4 European Series

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

With just the three-hour race down under in New Zealand serving as a slight distraction, most of our attention this weekend will be focussed on the Circuit Paul Ricard in the south of France as nearly one hundred GT3 and GT4 race cars congregate for the second rounds of the GT World Challenge Europe and GT4 European Series respectively.

Amongst that satisfyingly strong number of entrants will again be the two Garage 59 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s that compete within the GTWCE Endurance Cup Pro-Am and Silver classes as well as the six AMR Vantage GT4 cars that are entered from the likes of the AGS Events Racing, Mirage Racing, Street Art Racing and Racing One teams throughout the available Pro-Am, Silver and Am classes that are available to them.

At their opening rounds of the season at Monza in mid-April, the #188 Garage 59 GT3 of Alex West, Jonny Adam and Chris Goodwin of course came away with a class win after heavy rain shook up the proceedings whilst in the GT4 arena, only the #18 Racing One car of Henrik Lyngbye-Pederson and Marcus Lungstrass came away from Italy with any silverware with an Am Class P2 in race two after two, typical season opening races.

What’s happened since then is that Aston Martin Racing have recently announced their fourth intake for their Drivers Academy with eight racers within these eight cars now part of that factory supported driver development programme so we hope that many of those who made basic errors of judgement last time out to arrive in France with a new, refresh mindset.

With the GT4 European Series again supporting the bigger GT3 programme, will should be seeing the likes of Lyngbye-Pederson/Lungstrass return with the #18 car, the #45 car of Akhil Rabindra/Hugo Conde, #27 car Cesar Gazeau/Konstantin Lachenauer and #89 car of Nicolas Gomar/Eric Herr from the AGS Events team as well as the #7 Street Art Racing car of Pascal Bachmann/Paul Theysgens and the #55 Mirage race car of Ruben del Sarte/Tom Canning for that series two – one hour races which will this time both take place on Sunday.

That is because the GTWCE event will this time be its traditional six-hour race into Saturday night starting at 18:00hrs local.

Joining the #188 car of West/Goodwin/Adam will be the team’s Silver Cup crew of Valentin Hasse-Clot, Alex MacDowall and Nicolai Kjaergaard aboard the team’s #159 car.

All these races are available to view live via their series social media channels.
