More Aston Martin success as SRO America visited a weather affected Nola Motorsports Park

Sunday, April 30, 2023

Whilst we were busy being entertained by the rejuvenated performances of the three Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE teams within the World Endurance Championship at Spa Francorchamps, around the world saw seventeen similar crews to part in the latest rounds of their 2023 seasons around the world.

Principally in North America saw the second rounds of the GT World Challenge America and GT4 America Series as well as the third round of the sister GT America Series from the Nola Motorsport Park near New Orleans.

With six AMR Vantage GT4 powered crews competing again within the bronze driver powered GT America series, the results of their two forty-minute races would also become dependent upon the ability from each crew to adapt to the local weather conditions as torrential rain caused both delay within the meeting schedule as well as officially timed sessions on track.

Looking to continue the form seen at previous rounds at both St Petersburg and most recently at Sonoma, saw all the Flying Lizard, Chouest Povoledo and Heart of Racing crews lock out the opening qualifying session in class with Elias Sabo claiming his first pole position of the year in his #8 car. That however would change by the end of the race as Ross Chouest again took control to take the GT4 class win over the Flying Lizard entry of Jason Bell in second and Gray Newell in third.

Sunday’s second race would this time be under clear blue skies and sunshine, offering a different set of race results within the dominant AMR group within the GT4 class as Sabo would be the victor this time over a terrific drive from Todd Coleman within his #69 Archangel prepared car in second and Chouest again taking home more silverware in third.

As the series looks ahead to their next round from CoTA in mid-May, the GT4 Drivers Championship has closed right up with five AMR drivers within the top five spots with Bell still retaining a slender five points lead of Chouest in second with Newell just another point behind him in third.

In the GT4 America Series however, their two race programme would indeed be interrupted by the weather on Saturday with them losing daylight to run after the larger GT World Challenge America race heavily delayed before it.

They would eventually race just a single race on Sunday using their Am driver Qualifying times where Gray Newell would place his Heart of Racing AMR upon class pole with new co-driver Roman de Angelis in for the WEC busy Ian James.

Multiple Safety Car periods again affected the running of this solo one-hour race which saw the #69 Coleman/Billy Johnson Aston Martin sustain suspension damage on the opening lap only for safety cars to breed safety cars as others became stranded either in the gravel or on track.

During the intervening periods of racing, the #24 Heart car would be involved in a dice for the Pro-Am class lead with both the #7 and #47 Porsche’s but both of those would be pinged for pit stop transgressions allowing the new #24 duo to come home for the class win.

The #50 Chouest Povoledo car of their namesakes just missed out on the class podium in fourth despite having battled the #24 car for the lead at some point, but it was at least a strong showing from the #26 Heart of Racing Am entry for both Rianna O’Meara-Hunt and Hannah Grisham after their tough debut within the series at Sonoma with a P4 class finish.

To round things off in SRO America we had the #007 The Racers Group AMR Vantage GT3 of Derek DeBoer and (this) Valentin Hasse-Clot run again in the GT World Challenge America’s two ninety-minute races.

Having also debuted at Sonoma, greater knowledge and familiarity with their package allowed DeBoer to Qualify P5 in Pro-Am for the delayed race 1 and finish third in class despite the atrocious track conditions.

Prior to that, the Frenchman had also placed their #007 car into overall pole position for race 2 on Sunday, holding the lead throughout his opening stint but having to pit earlier than expected have lightly fuelled the car.

Despite losing overall track position, DeBoer would be racy on the now hot and dry track pushing their class and grid rivals all the way to survive a late Safety Car of their own to finish fourth overall and second in class for a second visit to the podium.

A great day for the Aston Martin Racing crews in WEC

Sunday, April 30, 2023

Aston Martin’s multiple championship-winning Vantage scored its first podium finish of the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] as ORT by TF made history in a thrilling 6 Hours of Spa last weekend.

This result marked an incredible 10th successive year in which Vantage has finished on the LM GTE Am podium in the WEC at Spa, and it was also a sixth rostrum appearance in as many world championship starts at the Belgian circuit for Aston Martin Racing partner team TF Sport – the reigning class champion team.

Ahmad Al Harthy became the first Omani driver to take pole position in the WEC with a stunning effort in Friday’s LM GTE Am qualifying session. Al Harthy, along with American co-driver Michael Dinan, and Aston Martin works driver Charlie Eastwood (IRL), then put on an impressive performance in a race that started in ultra-tricky weather conditions, to finish third – just 0.2 seconds from the runner-up spot.

Rainfall minutes before the cars pulled away from the grid prompted many drivers to select wet-weather tyres for the start, but Dinan – who was chosen to begin the race –
opted for slicks in the hope that the track would soon dry out. With grip almost non-existent in the early stages, he dropped to eighth place, but quickly gained ground and was back among the leaders within 45 minutes.

The ORT by TF Vantage remained in the lead pack for the rest of the race; third place coming its way after an intense wheel-to-wheel fight for second spot during the final 10 minutes between Eastwood and the Corvette.

North American Aston Martin partner team Heart of Racing made its WEC debut at Spa, having taken over NorthWest AMR’s entry – and its #98 plate – in the wake of the retirement earlier this week of 2017 GTE Am World Champion Paul Dalla Lana. Anglo-American driver and Team Principal Ian James qualified a strong sixth on his Vantage GTE debut and dealt with the early conditions superbly before handing driving duties onto co-drivers Daniel Mancinelli (ITA) and IMSA GTD Pro class race-winner Alex Riberas (ESP). Despite it being the team’s first time racing the Vantage GTE, its trio remained in the top-six hunt throughout, eventually finishing seventh.

Japanese team D’station Racing played a starring role during the early stages of the race. Tomonobu Fujii (JPN) mastered the damp, but drying, conditions on slick tyres to climb from eighth on the grid to lead within the first 25 minutes and pull five seconds clear at the head of the field. With multiple safety-car periods bunching the field and Satoshi Hoshino (JPN) later being forced into a gravel trap by another car, the duo and British rookie Casper Stevenson finished ninth.

Huw Tasker, AMR Head of Partner Racing, said: “It’s great to see TF Sport get a reward for the effort so far this year, and to see Vantage back on the podium in the third round of the WEC season is very welcome. I’m particularly happy for Ahmad, who became the first Omani to record a podium and take a pole position in WEC. For Heart of Racing, it was a strong debut and great preparation for Le Mans. It was a tough ask for the drivers to come in cold and perform at such a high level against world class competition, so their performance was very impressive and shows great promise. D'station Racing also showed very well and it was unfortunate that the team was unable to capitalise on its strong start.”

The FIA WEC continues with not only its showpiece event, but the biggest sportscar race in the world - the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which celebrates its centenary this year – on June 10-11.Vantage was a winner in GTE Am last year as TF Sport’s Marco Sørensen (DEN), Ben Keating (USA) and Henrique Chaves (POR) celebrated a famous victory.

Heart of Racing prepare for SROs visit to New Orleans

Saturday, April 29, 2023

The Heart of Racing (HOR) will head to the bayou for the next rounds in Pirelli GT4 America and GT America powered by AWS. HOR will return to NOLA Motorsports Park after a podium finish for Gray Newell and Ian James last season, but a new face will drive with Newell this time around.

Newell will be joined by Roman De Angelis to pilot the No. 24 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 entry in Pirelli GT4 America in hopes of repeating a podium finish from last year’s race.

De Angelis, the 2022 IMSA GTD Champion and 2023 Rolex 24 Hour of Daytona winner, will make his first SRO America start since the 2020 season where he earned wins at Circuit of the Americas and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Newell / De Angelis duo already have previous racing experience together, as the two have teamed up most recently in the 24H Series scoring a class win at the 12H of Mugello in March.

“I’m super excited to be in SRO GT4 America,” said De Angelis. “I’ve had the opportunity to do once before with another team and not only had a lot of fun racing in the series, but had some good results. Being with Gray in the car who knows the series well will be nice to help me understand the weekend’s layouts and how the racing is.”

Rianna O’Meara-Hunt and Hannah Grisham will team up in the No. 26 Aston Martin Vantage GT4, with both looking forward to making their first SRO competition laps at NOLA Motorsports Park for rounds 3 and 4 in Pirelli GT4 America.

“I am excited to get going at NOLA,” said O’Meara-Hunt. “I feel like Hannah and I are yet to show what we truly have on track so it’s going to be a good next round! I managed to get some sim time, thanks to Matt from Track Tec in Cromwell, NZ, so I am hoping it pays dividends over and above the practice sessions we will get prior to racing.”

The duo looks to rebound after the team suffered from contact in the very first corner of the first race of the weekend at Sonoma in the season-opener. The team was able to come back and bring home a top ten finish in the second race of the weekend.

“I’m really excited for race weekend number two with the Heart of Racing,” said Grisham. “I have been to NOLA once before so I’m excited to be at a familiar track. I’m excited to also continue to learn and grow on our opening round at Sonoma. I think Rianna and I have a better idea of the series and our competitors so I think we have a great weekend ahead of us.”

Newell will also be behind the wheel of the No. 25 Aston Martin GT America powered by AWS entry. This will be the first time the GT America series has raced at NOLA Motorsports Park. Newell goes into rounds 5 and 6 sitting third in GT America championship points standings.

“NOLA presents a good challenge for us to get back on the horse and dig in,” said Newell. “I’m looking to apply some new techniques from my time at Mugello and make my place in the championship stick.”

Al Harthy strikes pole for ORT with TF Sport in thrilling Spa WEC Qualifier

Friday, April 28, 2023

The difference a day makes within the World Endurance Championship is sometimes incredible as today we saw some real pace being delivered by the three Aston Martin Racing powered teams that appeared to bring them all right back into contention ahead of tomorrow’s six-hour race at Spa Francorchamps.

Waking up to the predicted wet track conditions around the circuit, the productivity to be achieved by the ORT with TF Sport, D’Station Racing and Heart of Racing teams was debatable, but seat time remained precious as each crew were still running at least one driver new to the Championship this season.

The #777 D’Station Racing MAR Vantage GTE of Satoshi Hoshino, Tomonobu Fujii and (in this session especially) the young Casper Stevenson elevated car up to P2 in class by the end of that final hour of practice earlier today but whilst the #25 ORT AMR of Ahmad Al Harthy, Michael Dinan and Charlie Eastwood finished out mid table with the #98 Northwest Heart of Racing crew of Ian James, Alex Riberas and Daniel Mancinelli still finding their feet in tenth out of the thirteen runners.

Today’s pit walk was absolutely packed with crowds three, four, five deep outside the garages, jockeying for any vantage point for a photograph and signed hero card from their preferred team.

The day was rounded off with the Qualifying session for each of the three classes starting again with the GTE Am class with still only thirteen of the listed fourteen cars running thanks to the earlier incident involving the two Ferrari’s taking out the #21 AF Corse until tomorrow when a new chassis can be built up for them.

Now under clearing skies and warming sunshine, all the cars were again driven by their designated bronze driver meaning that Hoshino, Al Harthy and James completing the honours again.

A stunningly quick opening lap for Al Harthy placed him at the head of the timing board just as the #56 Project 1 Porsche hit the tyre wall at the top of Raidillon, bringing out an immediate red flag. Thankfully otherwise uninjured, the session soon got back under way leaving time for only two more flying laps.

Both times the Omani improved providing the purists with a trio of lap times all capable to taking the pole position, which he did to great applause with the team garage as the first Omani driver to do so within the WEC. The next battle would be for who would be starting tomorrow alongside and that eventually went to the #85 Iron Dames Porsche, making for an interesting opening lap tomorrow.

A great performance was also posted by James in his first WEC Qualifier since that phone call beckoning them to join the Championship just a week ago. He finished in sixth whilst Hoshino also improved upon recent performances to start from P10. Like always, Free Practice and Qualifying is one thing – a six-hour race something completely different.

Good luck to them all.

Aston Martin Racing trio hit Spa Francorchamp with renewed vigour

Thursday, April 27, 2023

Great to be back at Spa Francorchamps todays for the first of a three-day event that will constitute as the third round of the World Endurance Championship.

Despite the sudden but not entirely unexpected situation with the former #98 Northwest Aston Martin Racing entry and Paul Dalla Lana stepping away from the Championship and their position taken by the American Heart of Racing team, this weekend’s event will be a pivotable event for all three crews leading into the 24 Hours of Le Mans event in June as well as the remaining three rounds of the season thereafter

Despite the chilly days of late in northern Europe, today turned into a glorious day for the thirty-car entry and an encouraging large crowd around the circuit today, allowing decent laps to be put in for those who need to hone the skills and for those who simply need laps in with their new AMR Vantage GTE.

All was not plain sailing though as the #777 D’Station Racing AMR of Satoshi Hoshino, Tomonobu Fujii and Casper Stevenson suffered an untimely off during Free Practice 1 this morning, with impact damage fortunately causing just superficial looking damage to the nose of the car.

Laps times for them and the #25 ORT with TF Sport GTE of Ahmad Al Harthy, Michael Dinan and Charlie Eastwood as well as the new #98 Heart of Racing crew of Ian James, Alex Riberas and Daniel Mancinelli all completed a healthy number of laps with their new Balance of Performance setting to end the morning session well up the running order in comparison to this stage at previous events.

This afternoon’s second session featured a similar vein but a multitude of Full Course Yellows, local yellows and then ultimately, a red flag blighted the testing programme of many going into tomorrow’s final Free Practice session and later Qualifying.

Even with the Aston’s new BoP applied, it’s hard to see just how much that will affect the AMR runners in Saturdays race as their pace today is still over a second slower than that of last year when the #33 TF Sport AMR of Ben Keating was very much the in-form partnership.

Mother Nature will also have an effect tomorrow with rain being forecasted in the morning although race day should remain dry.

We will see what tomorrow brings!

A BoP change for the Aston Martin as we welcome Heart of Racing to the WEC this weekend

Wednesday, April 26, 2023

The third round of the World Endurance Championship takes place this weekend around the iconic circuit of Spa Francorchamps in Belgium only two weeks after the previous round in Portimao.

What’s changed since then has obviously been fairly monumental within the Aston Martin Racing powered camp after Paul Dalla Lana announced his retirement from the WEC and motor racing in general immediately after the Portimao round and with immediate effect.

A longstanding customer of not only Aston Martin Racing but also the WEC, the loss of the Canadian businessman was on one hand a surprise but on the other – not, seeing just how poorly the AMR Vantage GTE has performed within the Championship up until now. With no points on the board after two rounds for the #98 Northwest car that he shared with Nikki Thiim and Axcil Jefferies, the rationale in continuing within a season that is clearly not going to deliver him another WEC GTE Am Drivers Championship was clearly not justifiable.

Like others, we thank Dalla Lana for all his racing endeavours over recent years both with and without Aston Martin Racing and we wish him well in his racing retirement.

That said, all was clearly not lost as within the intervening period had the American Heart of Racing step up to the mantle to take over the WEC entry granted to the #98 Northwest car for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Having had to ship the #98 car back to the Prodrive facility in the UK to repair damage sustained in Portugal also gave the team the time and privacy to rebrand the car into the colours normally associated with the Heart of Racing team ready for their drivers – Ian James, Alex Riberas and Daniel Mancinelli to take their first WEC start on Saturday.

They of course join the two TF Sport prepared entries for the #777 D’Station Racing and #25 ORT with TF Sport AMR Vantage GTE teams as crews Satoshi Hoshino, Tomonobu Fujii and Casper Stevenson within the #777 and Ahmad Al Harthy, Michael Dinan and Charlie Eastwood within the #25 all hope for an increase in performance for the Vantage GTE from this round in.

News from the WEC technical committee over recent hours do in fact confirm an increase for the Vantage GTE of not only an additional litre of fuel (from 88 to 89 litres) but also a boost increase across the range in the attempt to bring the car back in contention with its peers having been so underwhelming in the previous two in comparison.

We will make our own way to the circuit tomorrow so will hopefully be in a position to bring you more details on all of the above.

Street Art Racing continue within the GT Open series with their AMR Vantage GT3 and GT4

Wednesday, April 26, 2023

The International GT Open and GT Cup Open Europe kick off their opening rounds to their 2023 season this weekend with a sizeable contingent of GT3 race cars within the GT Open and a growing number of GT4 based cars within the other.

Thirty-three GT3 cars to be exact, will travel down to the Autodromo de Internacional do Algarve near Portimao for their traditional Saturday and Sunday, pit stop punctuated races for entries competing within their Pro, Pro-Am and Am classes.

The Belgium based Street Art Racing team last year entered the sole Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 for driver Pascal Bachmann and they do the same this season, but this time Bachmann will have a co-driver for much of the time but not necessarily the same one throughout.

For this round, he will be partnered by fellow SAR team driver Jahid Fazal-Karim as he steps up to the GT3 class for the first time this season having been part of the team’s GT4 2022 campaign alongside team driver coach Julien Darras.

Not letting the team’s available Vantage GT4 cars go to waste see Karim’s son, Jayan take his place alongside Darras in the two races of the GT Cup Open Europe Series.

Later in the season, we may see an additional AMR Vantage GT3 join the GT Open ranks as well.

Feathers Motorsport chase a repeat of their GT Cup season opening results in Rd2

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

Having been artful enough to populate their class podium in all four races of the opening round at Donington Park at the start of the month, the Feather Motorsport team will be back in action this weekend as the GT Cup Championship enters the full Grand Prix loop of the Brands Hatch Circuit.

Competing again with their #82 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4, gentleman driver James Guess will again be partnered by former AMR Academy winner Tom Canning for this weekend’s two sprint and pit stop races over both Saturday and Sunday.

Last time out, the duo sampled the view from each step of the GTH podium after Guess finished both solo driven sprint races in third and first before kind of mirroring that in the longer pit stop and driver change punctuated endurance races where he and Canning finished first on Saturday and second on Sunday.

Competing within another multi-class grid of twenty-eight cars, the #82 GTH class car will compete against another nine GTH classed cars as well as for points within the overall table where they presently lay third overall, beaten only so far by a GT3 car and a Ferrari Challenge class car.

Both races on each day shall take place after lunch at the Kent circuit.

Viper Niza back out in the Thailand Super Series opener at the Chang International

Monday, April 24, 2023

It was a positive return to the Thailand Super Series at the weekend for the Viper Niza Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3 crew of Douglas Khoo and Dominic Ang.

Having already embraced a ‘challenging’ 2023 season so far within an ill-fated Asian Le Mans Series campaign and a visit to the Sepang 12hr, this weekend’s visit to the Chang International Circuit in Buriram gave the Malaysian based team precisely what they needed after a difficult season so far that necessitated the rebuilding of the front end of their car after a big accident for Khoo during the second race of the Asian Le Mans Series in Dubai.

Returning to the series that first saw the Viper Niza team debut their new Aston Martin as during the F1 support race in Singapore last year, the team competed within the two race programme with the #65 crew completing the solo Qualifying and pit stop punctuated races apiece to come home P6 overall and in class in both despite the difficulties experienced with the tyres in the 40 degree plus ambient temperatures.

At least this will help to restore a degree of confidence within themselves and the car as the series moves onto the same circuit again at the end of May.

SRO America visits Nola with another combined grid of 14 Aston Martin Vantage race cars

Monday, April 24, 2023

This weekend sees another busy weekend for SRO racing with the reconvening of the three North American based series at the Nola Motorsport Park in New Orleans for the second rounds of the 2023 GT4 America and GT World Challenge America and third round of the GT America Series.

With all three series hitting the racetrack collectively at Sonoma at the start of the month, the intervening weeks has been made of car repairs for some and some more all-important testing ahead of another fast and furious venue with maybe a little intervention again from Mother Nature along the way – just to spice the racing up a little further.

International news within the #TeamAMR family today as well as other pre-arranged circumstances has led to a number of driver changes for some of the Aston Martin Racing powered runners across the three series whilst most remain constant with the driver pairing that fought out two terrific races in each series back in California.

Starting with the bigger platform-based GT World Challenge America Series, the #007 The Racers Group AMR Vantage GT3 that team racer Derek DeBoer shared at Sonoma with AMR factory driver Ross Gunn will this weekend see the young Englishman replaced with a certain young Frenchman as Valentin Hasse-Clot re-joins the team for races three and four of the season.

No stranger to the team of course, as Hasse-Clot gave the team some early season tips in testing and set up whilst Gunn was otherwise engaged with his IMSA and British GT driver duties with both the Heart of Racing and Beechdean AMR teams so a degree of consistency here should help the team improve.

Hasse-Clot arrives in the deep south very much pumped up from his Le Mans Cup race win with the Racing Spirit of Leman team last weekend in Spain but more so from his subsequent European Le Mans Series race that saw his Vantage GTE car taken out of the race on the very first lap. That could well be more than enough for the viewers to watch for themselves just what he and DeBoer could do at Nola this weekend amongst the other sixteen indicated entries.

In the GT4 America Series we see that Ian James’ position alongside Gray Newell in the #24 Heart of Racing AMR Vantage GT4 has been filled with fellow teammate Roman De Angelis as James gets to go World Endurance Championship racing this weekend at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium following the withdrawal of Paul Dalla Lana and his Northwest AMR team from the WEC today with immediate effect.

The #24 crew are again joined by the all-lady crew of Hannah Grisham and Rianna O’Meara-Hunt aboard the #26 car after they experienced just how tough this series can be for the unwary finishing with a DNF in race 1 and a P7 in their Am class finish in race 2.

A race win and another Pro-Am podium last time out at Sonoma has placed the #50 AMR Vantage GT4 of Ross Chouest and Aaron Povoledo onto a mantle for many to beat whilst a DNF also apiece for the #69 Todd Coleman/Billy Johnson and #428 Brady Behrman/Coby Shield crew will spur these guys into avoiding the trouble and making hay whilst the sun still shines!! A further entry from both the Flying Lizard and TR3 teams complete another seven car Aston Martin Racing powered entry.

Completing the trilogy is of course the solo driven GT America Series for bronze ranked drivers spread over its available GT3 and GT4 platforms.

Six crews again return for this third round of the season after Jason Bell (#2), Ross Chouest (#50), Elias Sabo (#8), and Jon Branam (#77) all took turns in securing five GT4 class podiums between them during the last round at Sonoma.

Early indications show that six Aston Martins competing within a class of just ten cars should throw up that eventuality but with every race of any type – to win it, first you have to be in it as that came home hard for former GT America GT4 Champion Bell in race 2 with a DNF that spoilt his P2 podium from earlier in the weekend but was still enough for him to retain a slender points lead from Chouest going into this weekend.

It's going to hot in more way than one this weekend!

Dalla Lana calls time on his AMR based racing career

Monday, April 24, 2023

Reigning IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD class champion team, Heart of Racing [HoR], will make its FIA World Endurance Championship [WEC] debut at Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium, this weekend.

The North American squad already runs multiple Aston Martin programmes with its fleet of Vantage GT3 and GT4 race cars in IMSA and the US-based SRO-run GT World Series GT4 categories, as well as the 2022 Spa 24 Hours. It now adds WEC to its roster with Anglo-American driver and team principal Ian James, IMSA GTD Pro class race-winner Alex Riberas (ESP) and Italian GT racer Daniel Mancinelli. Heart of Racing’s WEC campaign will run through to the end of the season, and will include the team’s first attempt at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the centenary edition taking place on the 10-11 June.

Heart of Racing joins two of Aston Martin’s other regular partner teams on the WEC grid – ORT by TF Sport and D’station Racing – but is only able to do so by taking over the entry from NorthWest AMR, owned by Paul Dalla Lana. Following a glittering GT career, the Aston Martin Racing legend is retiring from racing to give his full focus over to his multiple business interests. The 57-year-old entrepreneur contested the first two races of the season alongside Nicki Thiim (DEN) and Axcil Jefferies (ZIM) in his team’s Vantage GTE but has decided he no longer has the time required to prepare fully for competition at an elite level.

Dalla Lana’s record since joining the Aston Martin Racing driver roster is enviable. The most successful Amateur racer in WEC history, the Canadian’s 17 class victories put him fourth on the all-time winners’ list, behind Sebastian Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Dalla Lana’s old team-mate Pedro Lamy (POR).

‘PDL’ as he is affectionately known within Aston Martin, can look back proudly on an astonishing 54% WEC podium strike-rate, including the one he took on his world championship debut at Silverstone alongside Lamy and Fred Makowiecki (FRA), in 2013. He went on to record 36 more podiums in a 69-race WEC career – including those 17 wins (all achieved racing an Aston Martin Vantage). His most successful period of racing came between 2015-2017 when partnered with fellow AMR works drivers Lamy and Mathias Lauda (AUT). Between them the trio collected 12 victories and finished off the podium only seven times in 26 races. This remarkable run also accounted for 17 of the 23 pole positions Dalla Lana was associated with. This golden sequence of form ultimately led Paul to his coveted GTE Am Drivers’ World Championship title, in 2017, aboard his beloved #98 V8 Vantage GTE.

Dalla Lana’s other great dream was to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and while sadly this never quite came to pass, despite him coming close on more than one of his ten attempts, his final appearance at the ‘world’s most famous race’ last year netted him a brilliant GTE Am class podium finish alongside works driver Nicki Thiim (DEN) and David Pittard (GBR).

“To race for Aston Martin, compete at Le Mans and win a world championship title, has been one of the greatest adventures of my life and has given me so many memories that I will cherish for the rest of my days,” said Dalla Lana. “But the racing always had to stop at some point, and for me, that time has been coming for a while now. It has become increasingly challenging to find enough time to prepare and compete at the highest level; and to fight for a world championship you must be able to give your all. I’ve been lucky enough to race alongside some great drivers and great friends and compete against the very best in sportscar racing. I’ve been there as WEC has grown in stature and I’ve been able to drive the mighty V12, V8 and now the turbo-charged V8 Vantages at places like Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans. It’s been one hell of ride and I’m very grateful to have been able to take it all on board an Aston Martin. Thanks to all the incredible fans that have come out to watch us over the years, and I’d like to wish Aston Martin luck in the future. I’m sure going to miss it!”

Ian James added: “The Heart of Racing team has had ambitions to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the FIA WEC for some time. We are an ambitious group and to add WEC to what we have been fortunate to achieve in our other programmes over the past three years is an honour. Going for the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona/24 Hours of Le Mans double is very exciting. I’d like to take the opportunity to wish Paul well in the future, and to thank him for giving us the chance to take over his entry for the rest of 2023. It will be a baptism of fire in Spa, but we hope to continue the successful heritage of the #98 plate in WEC.”

Spa will be the first time that HoR has raced the Vantage GTE; the prototype version of the British-built race car derived from Aston Martin’s critically-acclaimed ultra-luxury sportscar. The car shares the same aluminium body-frame and a specially-tuned version of the four-litre V8 turbo-charged production engine. Under regulations, the HoR entry will continue to compete under the NorthWest AMR banner and use the #98 plate.

HoR is joined in the Aston Martin attack at Spa by the WEC GTE LM reigning champion, the #23 ORT by TF Vantage GTE driven by Omani driver Ahmad Al Harthy, Michael Dinan (USA) works star Charlie Eastwood (IRL), and the Japanese entry, D'station Racing, whose owner Satoshi Hoshino (JPN) regular co-driver Tomonobu Fujii (JPN) and rookie Casper Stevenson (GBR) are looking to improve on their best result of seventh in Belgium.
