Two Aston Martin crews due at 24H Series visit to Misano

Sunday, June 30, 2024

Two Aston Martin Racing powered crews appear on the entry list ahead of next weekend’s 24H Series visit to Misano in Italy.

‘Long time no see’ as far as Aston Martin powered teams are concerned within the Creventic Series, next weekend will see a further ad-hoc showing from the Belgian based Street Art Racing team with one of the Vantage GT4 platforms after they ran a ‘warm up’ event for drivers Pascal Bachmann and Jahid Fazal Karim at the last round of the FFSA GT4 Series at Spa Francorchamps. These two will be joined by Julien Darras.

Joining them amongst the twenty seven strong entry list will be the New Zealand based Prime Speed Sport with their #42 Pro-Am entered Vantage GT3.

Last time these guys were out within an Aston Martin was at the 12Hrs of Sepang earlier in March when drivers Francois Beziac, Heremana Malmezac and Jono Lester competed with an earl Bamber Motorsport prepared car. In a slight change of detail, this #42 Pro-Am entry will now be driven by Malmezac again but alongside the likes of both Liam Talbot and Earl Bamber himself.

Now that's a car to keep an eye on this weekend!!

Another momentous event for Aston Martin Racing as Comtoyou Racing win at the Spa 24

Sunday, June 30, 2024

Aston Martin has recorded a glorious overall victory in the Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa – the world’s most prestigious all-GT3 24 hour race which took place at Spa-Francorchamps, in Belgium, over 29-30 June weekend.

The win, claimed by Aston Martin partner team Comtoyou Racing, and works drivers Mattia Drudi (ITA), Marco Sørensen (DEN) and Nicki Thiim (DEN), was the first for the British ultra-luxury sportscar brand since 1948. The result also marked a maiden 24-hour triumph for the new Aston Martin Vantage GT3 and was the first time the famous Wings had beaten its major competition in the Belgian endurance classic since it became an-all GT event in 2001.

For double FIA GT World Endurance champion Thiim and triple world champion Sørensen, affectionally known within the sport as the ‘Dane Train’, victory represents the first time the duo have won a 24-hour race overall as team-mates in the same car, in spite of them having three 24 Hours of Le Mans class wins between them.

Sørensen said: “This is a very special moment. To win already in the first year with the new Vantage GT3 is an amazing achievement. It’s a fantastic car, and we’ve had a good feeling about it all year. But to win an event like this takes more than good driving and good luck, and the team, and everyone back at Aston Martin Racing, as well as my team-mates deserve credit for a victory I will remember forever.”

Thiim added: “It’s difficult to put into words what this means to me, and to Aston Martin. We have been trying to win this race for a long time, and do it in this way is an incredible feeling. I think everyone knows how I feel about Aston Martin. We have had so many special memories together, and this win is up there with the best of them for me.”

For Drudi, a Fanatec GT World Europe champion, it was an opportunity to shine on one of endurance racing’s biggest stages, and that he did, putting the #007 car in contention every time he stepped in the cockpit – including during the opening hours of the race, where he’d worked the team into a leading position before the first of multiple Safety Car Periods.

A complicated night of racing, where torrential thunderstorms and multiple incidents neutralised the event for several hours, Comtoyou Racing remained composed and kept the car in touch with the leading fight, even as pitstops during the Safety Car periods forced 20-car swings in the race positions on occasion.

Each time, the team rebounded and raced back to the front so that as morning came and the track dried out, it found itself in a straight fight for victory with a rival Ferrari, two BMWs and the other Pro class #34 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 of partner team Walkenhorst Motorsport, driven by Henrique Chaves (POR), Ross Gunn (GBR) and David Pittard (GBR).

In the final hour of the race the #7 Comtoyou Racing Aston Martin trailed the Ferrari by 10s, when its rival pitted and was held-up in the pitlane entry by a stranded car. This turn of events prevented Ferrari with the chance to race for the win, and denied the fans a grandstand finish as Drudi raced to the flag unopposed.

“To win with Nicki and Marco has been a fantastic experience,” said Drudi. “This is such a tough race, but I would say we had the perfect run, with no problems and a very good execution. I am very proud of everyone in the team.”

Gunn brought the #34 Walkenhorst Vantage GT3 home fourth following a strong run for the team that saw it lead on several occasions.

Indeed Walkenhorst Motorsport, a previous winner of the event, came close to clinching the Silver Cup class victory in the #35 Vantage GT3 driven by 2022 AMR Driver Academy graduate Romain Leroux (FRA) and 2024 candidates Lorcan Hanafin (GBR) and Maxime Robin (FRA). Unfortunately, the car was the innocent victim of an accident, following a Safety Car period on Sunday morning, while fighting for the lead of the class.

Of Comtoyou Racing’s four-car entry, which completed a record seven-car assault on the race by Aston Martin, the #007 was often the fastest car in the race, but the team’s #21 Silver Cup car driven by Charles Clark (GBR), Sam Dejonghe (BEL), Matisse Lismont (BEL) and Xavier Maassen finished sixth, having led the class earlier in the race.

The new Vantage GT3, closely derived from the new Vantage road car unveiled earlier this year at Silverstone, and built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis and powered by its fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine, is in a rich vein of form. In the month of June alone it has clinched victories in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the SUPER GT Series, the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie and Road to Le Mans event. Now Aston Martin can add one of the most famous wins in its racing history to that tally.

Adam Carter, Head of Endurance Motorsport, said: “We offer our sincere congratulations and thanks to our partners Comtoyou Racing on this fantastic victory for the new Aston Martin Vantage GT3. We’ve known since the start of the season what the car is capable of, and this performance at Spa was through a combination of technical excellence, endurance, fortitude and execution. I’d also like to congratulate Walkenhorst Motorsport on a hard-fought performance worthy of a podium finish. The hard work of everyone at Aston Martin Racing is paying off already in a car that is still so young. To win the 24 Hours of Spa is no small achievement and given that it had only been done three times by a British manufacturer in its 100-year history, and now twice by us, it ranks as one of our greatest endurance victories.”

Aston Martin’s previous best Spa 24 Hours finish of the GT3 era was in 2021, when Gunn, Sørensen and Thiim secured a competitive third place overall, having been in the lead fight for much of the race. Prior to that, the best GT finish for an Aston Martin was also third, in 2008, with the Gigawave DBR9 GT1. Aston Martin last won the event in 1948, when it was run to different regulations, with a 2-Litre Sports DB1 driven by Britons St John Horsfall and Leslie Johnson.

Comtoyou Racing - winners of the 2024 Spa 24

Sunday, June 30, 2024

Remember this date - 30th June 2024 – the day when Belgian team Comtoyou Racing team and Aston Martin Racing won the Spa 24 Hours.

Making history together at the centennial running of the this great event, The Jean Michel Baert led team also won their first Spa 24 race alongside that of the new 2024 Vantage GT3 as well as Aston Martin Racing first win at the Ardennes circuit in over seventy years.

Again, the event didn’t fail to deliver on excitement, incident and accident as well as heart break and elation as sixty-seven similar powered GT3 cars competed for the top honours with the five available classes.

There was to be no fairy tale to the start of this race though as both the #007 Comtoyou Racing and #34 Walkenhorst Motorsport Aston Martin’s made it through to Superpole but had to make do with starting positions at the tail end of the top twelve. Then onto of that, there were the performances of five more Vantage GT3 crews to consider over what will be a gruelling race.

The sister #12 Comtoyou car was the first to experience the heart break of the event as they were eliminated from the race early on as they were taken out by a passing Ferrari coming out of La Source that would see their steering and suspension deranged but they fortunately avoided the carnage that then followed involving the Ferrari stranded on track.

Then the rains came – as expected and just a hard and persistent as it usually at the circuit. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the #36 Walkenhorst AMR was lost due to a high speed off at Eau Rouge that saw the car heavily damaged in the tyre wall and a wheel making its way down the hill to pit out without the rest of the car attached. Luckily, the driver was otherwise OK for the impact, but his dismay and regret was clear for everyone to see.

Night would then turn into the gloom of Sunday as the rains still persisted although they had relented in intensity. All appeared to be going well for the #35 Walkenhorst Silver Cup entry as having lead (or there abouts) the class for much of the race to that point.

However, another error from the #34 Team WRT BMW saw that car make contact with another car at Les Combes only for that rebounding car to be collected by the avoiding #36 car at the next corner. Unavoidable as far as the Aston Martin was concerned – unnecessary as far as the BMW was concerned as whilst they and the Ferrari continued, the #36’s day was already run.

By now, the race was coming to its end and whilst the #007 Comtoyou was still at the sharp end of the leading pack, they were not alone as the #34 Walkenhorst laid chase, but their race winning chances would also come to an end at Les Combes as contact between them and the #51 Ferrari was deemed their fault for which they would receive a ten second time penalty added to their race time. That would see them eventually finish P4 overall – still a great achievement.

The highlight, however, was the #007 Comtoyou car of Mattea Drudi, Marco Sorenson and Nicki Thiim who, with the help of the team and those from AMR, brought their car home to win the Spa 24 together for the first time.

Have seen their trials and tribulations within the opening rounds of the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, this result was thoroughly deserved as they kept the car of the tarmac, made no obvious contact with other competitors to run a faultless adaptive race strategy!!

Well done all.

Spa delivers another eventful GT4 European round for the nine Aston Martin powered entries

Sunday, June 30, 2024

The third round of the GT4 European Series from Spa Francorchamps this weekend again provided us with another example of just why modern GT4 racing is so entertaining with its balanced competitive nature.

Whilst the two races over Friday night and Saturday morning provided that spectacle – it wasn’t always to the advantage of the nine Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 powered teams who were part of the original fifty-seven strong entry.

The first casualty was the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR of Alexandre Machado and David Kullmann after the young Brazilian lost control of his car during the first Qualifying session to impact heavily into the barriers at Les Combes. That car would play no further part in the proceedings.

With a change to their timetable thanks to the series support of the Spa 24 Hours, race one would be run into the evening of Friday and things looked promising at the start with the #99 Prosport Racing AMR of Hugo Sasse (and Raphael Rennhofer) on the second row of the grid with the #5 Mirage Racing AMR starting P8 with Ruben Del Sarte (and Josh Miller). The remaining Aston’s were spread between there back to P45 with the Am class challenging #72 GPA Racing car of Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud.

Inevitably, this last grid piling into turn one at La Source resulted in contact and another such loser was the #100 Prosport Racing car of Fabio Rauer and Henrik Still. Their race would end extremely quickly in the gravel with a rear wheel puncture – cause or effect??

With plenty of door banging and place changing racing over the next few laps, Sasse would still be holding P3 overall alongside an improving run by Mateo Villagomez within the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman AMR as the pit window approached however, that would soon be delayed as other cars became beached within the gravel.

With that pit window being opened next time around having gone back to green it was to. Be another three to four laps before the actual running order became plain to see. The #99 retained P3 with Rennhofer now behind the wheel and Jamie Day was on another of his charges within the #74 car with the guesting Forsetti AMR of Mikey Porter and Aston Millar doing well in P19 overall.

As the light finally passed into dark, race one would end with an AMR P3 and P4 upfront (#99 and the #72 respectively) but with the #72 GPA Racing crew also claiming another P2 finish in class.

Saturday’s second race was a bright an early affair with another good AMR showing in earlier Qualifying that had three cars starting from a top ten grid position.

Like race one, there were early AMR powered casualties as the #72 GPA Racing car of Grizaud got banged into the retaining wall of the inside of turn one on the opening lap and with that FCY intervention, more would quickly follow.

With Day chasing down the top three in fourth and the #100 Prosport and #5 Mirage Racing cars of Still and Miller trying to make up for earlier mistakes, another FCY again interrupting the race flow for stranded car immediately before the opening of the pit window.

When things did go back to green and the pit lane opened, an unfortunate untimely release by the Mirage Racing team allowed their #5 car to drive into the side of the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman car of Villagomez breaking the #74 cars steering and earning the #5 car a later enforced drive through penalty for its efforts.

That incident put paid to any worthy Aston Martin powered challenge within race 2 with the #99 Prosport entry gaining more points with a P7 in class finish with the Forsetti Motorsport team finishing well with a P8 finish too in Silver Cup.

The next round of the season takes the more traditional eight AMR car entry to Hockenheim in about three weeks’ time.

Stage is now set of the anniversary running of the Spa 24 tomorrow

Friday, June 28, 2024

Starting positions have all now been determined for the sixty-six GT3 cars still running in this weekend’s centennial running of the Spa 24Hours.

Having been blessed with fantastic weather around the Ardennes circuit throughout the track sessions so far, the real business began yesterday evening with the first of four Qualifying sessions that would be used to determine each cars starting position except for the top twenty who would move onto the later Superpole session on Friday.

Bolstered by Aston Martin Racing’s biggest Partner team participation in recent years saw all seven 2024 Vantage GT3’s take part, starting either within Q1 or Q2 depending upon the number of drivers aboard each car giving us a representation in all classes.

Starting from the rear of the grid, the #36 Walkenhorst Motorsport Bronze Cup entry of Tim Creswick/Bijoy Garg/Mex Jenson and Ben Green had the slowest time of the seven with a combined time worthy of a P58 grid slot. Slightly further up was the #11 Comtoyou Racing Bronze Cup entry of Kobe Pauwels/John De Wilde/ Dante Rappange and Job Van Uitert who claimed a P54 slot.

In P51, was the #12 Comtoyou Racing Silver Cup AMR entry for Nicolas Baert/Sebastian Ogaard/Esteban Muth and Erwan Bastard with their sister #21 Silver Cup entry of Charles Clark/Matisse Lismont/ Xavier Maassen and Sam Dejonghe further ahead again in P40.

The #35 Silver Cup Walkenhorst entry of Romain Leroux/Lorcan Hanafin and Maxime Robin will start from P38 to complete the Aston Martin Racing powered entry outside of the top twenty runners.

To earn that accolade, both the #34 Walkenhorst Pro Class entry of Ross Gunn/Henrique Chaves and David Pittard and the #7 Comtoyou Racing Pro entry of Nicki Thiim/Marco Sorenson and Mattia Drudi finished within the top ten in P10 and P5 respectively to go again on Friday.

This time running within the full heat of the day, the #34 Walkenhorst driven by Chaves and the #7 Comtoyou Racing AMR of Drudi both clocked best lap times worthy of a top ten place before eventually dropping down to P12 for the #34 and P13 for the #7 car at the end after timing corrections were made to the final order.

The next biggest test for all runners will be to make it safely around turn one at La Source for the first time on Saturday afternoon before continuing to do so for the next twenty-four hours. Anything can happen – and usually does and that doesn't even include what Mother Nature can add into the mix!!

Aston Martins strongest Spa 24 effort yet at 100 year anniversary event

Thursday, June 27, 2024

Aston Martin’s new Vantage GT3 will make its Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa debut this weekend as the British ultra-luxury sportscar brand bids to win the race outright for the first time since the event became a GT3-only race in 2012.

No less than seven Vantages – the largest ever contingent of Aston Martin GT3s – are entered by two of Aston Martin’s new-for-2024 partner teams, ComToYou Racing and Walkenhorst Motorsport. This represents more than 10% of the giant 67-strong entry, which comprises nine competing global manufacturers and five integral classes.

Both teams head into the 100th anniversary of an event Aston Martin last won in 1948 (when the race was run to different rules), aiming to crown a landmark month that has produced maiden victories for the new Vantage GT3 in North America, Asia and Europe. The Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa represents the last opportunity to bring home some silverware in a blue riband ‘twice around-the-clock’ race in 2024, with Vantage having shone brightly in the Rolex 24 Hours, Nürburgring 24 Hours and the recent 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Both teams’ bids are boosted by the presence of an all-works driver line-up with their single Pro class entries. ComToYou Racing’s #7 will bring a familiar feel for Aston Martin Racing fans the world over as the ‘Dane Train’ duo of Nicki Thiim and Marco Sørensen are reunited alongside Mattia Drudi (ITA). Between them, Thiim and Sørensen boast five FIA GT World Endurance Championship titles and two 24 Hours of Le Mans class wins. Neither has ever won the Spa classic however, though their team-mate Drudi, the reigning Fanatec GT World Europe Sprint Cup champion, finished second overall in 2020.

Walkenhorst Motorsport’s #34 entry boasts an equally exciting line-up with David Pittard (GBR), the 2023 Nürburgring 24 Hours winner, being joined by Henrique Chaves, the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans class winner, and Ross Gunn (GBR) hot off the podium from recording the new Vantage GT3’s first victory in IMSA.

Between them, the six works Aston Martin drivers represent the strongest-ever assault on the race’s Pro class by the brand. Moreover, it comes into the event with Vantage in a rich vein of form having clinched victories in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the SUPER GT Series, the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie and Road to Le Mans event in the past four weekends.

ComToYou Racing has entered three further Vantage GT3s, which all share the mechanical architecture of the new Vantage road car unveiled earlier this year at Silverstone, and which are built around Aston Martin’s proven bonded aluminium chassis and powered by its fearsome twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine.

The Belgian team’s #11 Bronze Cup entry will be driven by John de Wilde (BEL), Kobe Pauwels (BEL), Job van Uitert (NED) and Dante Rappange (NED). It also has two Silver Cup entries; the #12 will be raced by Nicolas Baert (BEL), Esteban Muth (BEL), Sebastian Øgaard (DEN) and Erwan Bastard (FRA), while the #21 will feature Charles Clark (GBR), Sam Dejonghe (BEL), Matisse Lismont (BEL) and Xavier Maassen (NED).

Walkenhorst Motorsport brings a strong Silver Cup line-up to its fleet of Vantage GT3s, with Romain Leroux (FRA), Lorcan Hanafin (GBR) and Maxime Robin (FRA) in the #35. Meanwhile the team’s Bronze Cup #36 car will also be a competitive force with drivers Tim Creswick (GBR), Mex Jansen (NED) and Ben Green (GBR).

Adam Carter, Head of Endurance Motorsport, said: “The Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa represents perhaps the purest form of GT endurance racing, given that it is open only to GT3 cars. It makes it a unique and difficult, and therefore perfect, test of our new Vantage GT3. The car has performed well through June, winning in three continents including North America, and it shone brightly in the 24 Hours of Le Mans two weeks ago. Misfortune has played its part in all the major 24 hours races so far this season, so let’s hope we’ve had our fill of that ahead of Spa. Sixty-seven entries from nine manufacturers tells its own story about what this race means to the sport on its 100th anniversary, and it would be a proud claim to say that new Vantage had excelled in this event.”

Aston Martin recorded its best finish in the GT3 era in 2021, when Gunn, Sørensen and Thiim secured a competitive third place overall, having been in the lead fight for much of the race. Prior to that, the best GT finish for an Aston Martin was also third, in 2008, with the Gigawave DBR9. Aston Martin last won the event in 1948, when it was run to different regulations, with a 2-Litre Sports DB1 driven by Britons St John Horsfall and Leslie Johnson.

Nine Vantage GT4s to compete at Spa this weekend

Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Surprisingly still only their third round of the season so far sees a mighty fifty-seven GT4 crews arrive at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium earlier this week for the next two races in support of the headline act of the Crowdstrike Spa 24 Hours.

Within that healthy entry list, we will find nine Aston Martin Racing powered crews listed – one more than usual as Mikey Porter makes his first steps within the European series to go along with his British GT and GT Cup aspirations in his first year of GT racing. Unlike the other two series, Porter will this time be joined by former McLaren GT4 British GT4 racer Aston Millar within the #19 car.

Something else will be new this time around as the #39 AMR entry of Baudouin Detout and Roberto Faria will now be entered via the Racing Spirit of Leman team after the Frenchman parted company with the GPA Racing team after the last round from Misano.

Other than that, we believe that the remaining seven AMR entries remain constant from previous rounds with two new Vantage GT4 cars from the Mirage Racing team (for Ruben Del Sarte/Josh Miller and Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub); two more new Vantage GT4’ from the Racing Spirit of Leman team (for drivers Jamie Day/Mateo Villagomez and David Kullmann/Alexandre Machado) and two older 17A variants from the Prosport Racing team (for drivers Raphael Rennhofer/Hugo Sasse and Fabio Rauer and Henrik Still.

The #72 GPA Racing entry for Kevin Jimenez and Florent Grizaud are this time the odd ones out with no sister car to detract the team’s attention from their own so that might now play in their favour as the battle out in the Am class.

Due to the Spa 24Hr race starting on Saturday, this GT4 European Series race timetable has therefore been brought forward to accommodate that with private testing already having been completed today before the grid goes into Free Practice tomorrow with Qualifying and race one running into Friday night before the second hour long race over midday on Saturday.

Race results from the season so far have seen the Aston Martin powered teams a little bit off the pace in both Silver and Pro-Am but in a prominent position in second within the Am Class. Certainly, two good results from Spa will boost anyone’s chances for the remainder of the season.

A solo Forsetti AMR at this weekends GT Cup return from Oulton Park

Wednesday, June 26, 2024

Just the one Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 from the Forsetti Motorsport team will great the GT Cup grid this weekend as the muti-class format championship will battle out their fourth round of the season at Oulton Park.

Usually a two-car entry of course, but this weekend’s events over at Spa Francorchamps will see Mikey Porter otherwise engaged within an ad-hoc entry into the GT4 European Series visit to the Belgian circuit whilst Jody Sloss will also be otherwise engaged with her F1 duties in Austria.

That leaves Matthew Higgins and Rianna O’Meara-Hunt to pair together within the teams #9 car for this weekend’s two pit stop races on Saturday only this time.

Recent results from Donington Park, Brands Hatch and most recently Snetterton has seen both Porter and Higgins lead both the Overall and GTH Class Champiosnhip tables with both O’Meara-Hunt and Sloss close behind in fifth within the Overall table and second in class.

Track action begins with just fifteen minutes of Free Practice before descending into two Qualifying runs ahead of the later forty-minute races.

Win some lose some for many AMR powered teams at the beginning of SRO Speed week from Spa Francorchamps

Monday, June 24, 2024

Last weekend’s start to the SRO Speedweek from Spa Francorchamps again provided a complete topsy-turvey set of race results for the multitude of Aston Martin Racing powered teams that competed within either the British GT Championship or the FFSA GT4 Series.

With the Belgian circuit again providing these grids a varying selection of weather arrangements across the race weekend, at least Sunday was a day where both the track and grids were shown off in their finest although many of the results saw these cars finishing at the extreme ends of the timing screen.

Within the British GT Championship, Qualifying had been a good day for the Blackthorn AMR team as both their #10 and #87 Vantage GT3 crews of Matt Topham/ Josh Rowledge and Jonny Adam/Giacomo Petrobelli secured their best results of the season so far with the #10 car securing a Silver-Am class pole with the #87 also starting from the front row of the grid in Pro-Am.

The GT4 pack were a little unfortunate as a red flag at the start of their first Qualifying run meant for their grid slots being determined by their times with the last Free Practice session and whilst that meant for an overall P2 start for the #47 Forsetti Motorsport AMR Pro-Am pairing of Marc Warren and Will Orton, their #7 Silver class car of Mikey Porter and Jamie Day would start from an uncharacteristic P14th.

Hopes of another fine two-hour sprint within the Champiosnhip season were quickly dashed at the first corner however, as multiple contact between cars lead to the #97 Beechdean AMR Vantage GT3 of Andrew Howard (shared with Jessica Hawkins) being hit hard on the front quarter. Although missing the pit wall by inches, the damage was already done to the car with Howard stopping within the Endurance pit lane.

The resulting clear up lost the first fifteen minutes to the Safety Car before barrier repairs forced a red flag which lost a further forty-five minutes in time only for the race clock to be reset to seventy-five minutes – just enough to claim a 75% race distance and thus, full championship points on offer.

Eventually getting back to green saw the #87 Blackthorn AMR of Petrobelli continue a solid run in second overall as the faster Aston Martin was still no match for the even quicker Mercedes up ahead. In GT4 meanwhile, Day was making steady progress through the pack from his lowly starting position to be soon on the tail of his P2 team mate just ahead of the planned pits stop window.

Topham had been busy holding his position on track with four clearly faster crews chomping at his heals behind, a situation that inadvertently helped their #87 team mates ahead from those in the McLaren 720’s.

Pitting with forty-five minutes to go, Orton took over from Warren from third in the #47 whilst the additional stop time for #7 car of Day/Porter appeared to last forever in pit lane. Coming out ahead of the #56 Ginetta soon lead to a silver class ping pong match between the two for the lead in class.

Going into the final quarter of an hour, all was looking good as Adam was holding a comfortable second overall, teammates within the #10 car were still in for both a top ten finish overall as well as being P2 in class with the two Forsetti cars in podium finishing positions as well. That however changed when something ‘broke’ within the #10 Blackthorn car that would see Adam lucky to catch the snap oversteer mid corner to bring his car to a safe halt at the side of the track – albeit into immediate retirement.

Their pain was somewhat muted by their #10 car of Rowledge and Topham coming home for a gallant P6 finish overall with a P2 finish in Silver-Am to boot. This result would be boosted by another double for the Forsetti team and the #47 came home in second – both overall and in class whilst their #7 car would claim another class win together win another P3 overall in GT4.

Then within the supporting FFSA GT4 Series, it was another double podium visit for the #74 Racing Spirit of Leman Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4 pairing of Victor Weyrich and Mateo Villagomez after they scooped both a P1 and P2 finish within their silver class after each of the weekend’s hour-long races.

Their Am Class teammates of Clement Dub and Ronald Basso didn’t fare quite so well with a DNF in race 1 with a P5 in class finish in race 2. The other full season Mirage Racing AMR entry of Stanislav Safronov and Aleksandr Vaintrub would also have a race weekend to forget within their Pro-Am class as their did not better than P5 in class.

Heart of Racing come out on top after an eventful Watkins Glen

Monday, June 24, 2024

The Heart of Racing Team managed both the challenging conditions and the competition to fight back from an early race penalty and win the Sahlen’s Six Hours At The Glen with Ross Gunn and Alex Riberas on Sunday.

The victory marks the first IMSA win with the new Aston Martin Vantage GT3, which debuted with Heart of Racing at the 24 Hours At Daytona in January.

Gunn and Riberas teamed up in the No. 23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 once again combining for a podium finish in Detroit earlier this month. Gunn qualified for the pair on a warm Saturday afternoon securing a third place starting position in the GT field.

Gunn drove the first two stints remaining in the top three positions throughout his time behind the wheel. When Riberas took over, he immediately had to come back through the pits for a drive through penalty as a result for working outside the No. 23 pit box.

Riberas was able to navigate through traffic cleanly, and put the great team strategy to work as he was able to sit second when a caution came out. After a debate between staying on wet or switching to slicks, Riberas took the green flag from the front of the GTD PRO field but pitted the next lap for slick tires, forcing the No. 23 Aston Martin a lap down.

Gunn took over with two hours to go when the fourth caution of the race came about due to rain as several cars went off track. IMSA race control red flagged the field for standing water with an hour and twenty minutes to go - Gunn was in ninth. When the field went back to green with 36 minutes remaining, Gunn had moved up to second after others took to pit lane for slick tires and fuel.

The No. 23 Heart of Racing Team made the call to remain out on slicks, having pitted just nine laps before the rain had arrived. After battling the No. 4 Corvette for the final 15 laps, the Corvette dove into the pits from the lead with one lap to go, leaving Gunn to defend from the McLaren behind them. Gunn took the checkered flag in first, winning the Sahlen’s Six Hours At The Glen.

“It's hard to really describe in words the emotions of the team right now,” said Riberas. “These guys deserve it more than anybody. I'm so happy for the team, it was truly a big team effort and one hell of a race. I love Ross (Gunn) like a brother so anything I can do to get him this championship that he deserves, I will do. We are in it together and we're going to get this championship!”

“Wow, what a day for the Heart of Racing. I'm just super proud of everybody,” said Gunn. “We had a tricky start to the race, and again things came back to us towards the end. I think the team showed a true spirit and ‘never give up’ attitude. Alex drove a phenomenal race once again, and, like in Detroit, was given some tough things to deal with. I had some easier stints at the start, and then obviously the rain came down towards the end, and that put everyone in a tricky position. We came here with a strong car and a strong package. The team was operating at an incredibly high level, and I'm just so proud of everyone. We start the second half of the season with a really good shot, we just need to keep pushing.”

The endurance trio of Roman De Angelis, Zacharie Robichon and Ian James reunited in the No. 27 Aston Martin Vantage GT3. James qualified eleventh in a field of 21 GTD entries.

James was behind the wheel of the No. 27 Heart of Racing machine for the first hour and a half of the six hour race, driving up to seventh before handing the Aston Martin to De Angelis on lap 78. De Angelis maintained the seventh place position when Robichon took over on the next stint.

Unfortunately a sudden rainstorm came over the track. Robichon hit the brakes to avoid contact with a competitor in front of him when he spun and was impacted by another GT car, forcing the No. 27 Aston Martin to the garage where it later retired after completing 82 laps.

“A very unfortunate ending to our race,” said De Angelis. “We were in a pretty good position at the time and the car was feeling decent. The team was doing a really good job. We knew the weather conditions were going to be interesting, but I think that would have benefited us. It’s just an unfortunate incident, I’m glad Zach is okay. I feel as though I’m saying this for the fifth or sixth time this season, but it seems like we can't get any luck at all.

“I feel sorry for the guys, but I just hope we can come back at some point and get them what they deserve – hopefully my home race at CTMP brings some good luck,” continued De Angelis. “I think if there's anywhere that it should happen, it should be there! I know the track quite well and I've had success there in the past few years so let's hope that's our place to get a win or at least a podium. It would be great to get a win at home.”

A heavy AMR attrition rate at Saturdays NLS race at least sees a class win for Walkenhorst

Sunday, June 23, 2024

Saturday’s third round visit of the Nurburgring Langstrecken Serie proved itself to be more than a bruising episode of the German Club hosted series for many of the Aston Martin Racing powered entries although one did finally come out on top in class.

Starting with the good news – the #35 Walkenhorst Motorsport AMR Vantage GT3 SP9 Pro-Am entry of Benjamin Mazatis, Anders Buchardt and Sami-Matti Trogen finished at the head of the queue within their class at the end of this four-hour race although they, and the one hundred and thirty of competitors have to wait for it as early morning fog again caused race organisers issues with the timetable.

Like all race wins, to win it – first you have to finish it, and that was the issue for the two other SP9 Pro-Am entries after they both faltered during the race. One of those cars was unfortunately the #17 Prosport Racing Vantage GT3 of Maxime Dumarey, Marek Bochmann and Simon Balcaen after fire within the car forced Bochmann to stop on the opening lap. Able to exit the car himself, smoke inhalation meant for a precautionary overnight stay in hospital for him, but he at least reports that he is otherwise OK this morning.

Then there were the five other Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s from both the Prosport Racing and Dorr Motorsport teams within either the SP10 or SP8T classes.

Sadly again, only the #179 Dorr car of Niklas Abrahamsen, Phil Dorr and Olaf Hoppleshauser and their sister #175 car of Marnix Hommerson and Damon Surzyshyn managed to finish yesterdays race albeit one and two laps down respectively. For the locally based Prosport Racing team’s standards – this weekend was one to quickly forget!

Teams will now regroup ahead of the next round of the season in six weeks’ time – which will be a six-hour affair!

Treble Aston Martin powered podium finishes at Watkins Glen in Michelin Pilot Challenge

Sunday, June 23, 2024

The midway point of the IMSA sanctioned Michelin Pilot Challenge Series surpassed even its own track record yesterday with both incident and accident leaving an ‘all bets off’ scenario even onto the final lap of this weekend’s two-hour affair.

Competing this time from the hot and sweaty Watkins Glen International Circuit, nine Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT4’s formed part of the twenty-five GS (GT4) strong line up alongside that of the fourteen TCR based entries.

With both the #46 Team TGM car of Paul Holton and Matt Plumb having claimed another front row start in Qualifying with the #19 Van Der Steur car of Rory Van Der Steur and Valentin Hasse-Clot close behind in fifth, even the warmup laps featured untimely accident that delayed the start after two TCR cars collided leaving one stranded in the middle of the track.

Misfortune would soon come the way of one Aston Martin Racing powered team as first the #09 Automatic Racing AMR of John Potter and Rob Ecklin ground to a halt on track forcing an early caution whilst not long later, their second AMR of Brandon Kidd and Tom Long also ground to a halt on track with their reoccurring electrical issues.

These and a race restart Drive Through Penalty for the #71 Rebel Rock AMR of Frank DePew and Robin Liddell as well as a puncture for the #19 VDS car just added the early drama.

Whilst these cars were suffering, the resulting caution periods allowed others to play with their fuel and tyre strategy as the forty minute minimum drive time requirement was still a long time away but with the GS class so equally balanced, that was the only way of turning any situation to your advantage on track.

One such early caller was the #46 Team TGM of then Paul Holton who, like the #19 VDS car of Rory Van Der Steur used these situations for early fuel top ups (and new tyres were required) whilst others would play out the more traditional long approach but again, even that came at a cost for some as the #88 Archangel AMR of Todd Coleman and Aaron Telitz would get pinged in pit lane for spinning wheels whilst on their air jack (a DTP for those guys).

Fifty minutes into the race and finally the track racing part of the equation was allowed to do its thing -or as until another incident with a TCR brought out the Safety Car again with just over an hour to go.

As the race went back to green, the #46 Team TGM was holding point at the front with the #19 VDS close behind as both cars looked to go long enough to make their fuel strategies work but with a charging BMW coming up fast. With the #46 blinking first, the #19 was able to run for another ten minutes before they were forced to pit as their team’s second #82 AMR of Brady Behrman and Scott Blind were also having something of a cracking race together within the Bronze Cup runners.

Final forty minutes and strangely, it was the #16 Skip Barber Racing School AMR of Ken Fukuda and Will Lambros holding the overall race lead by over twenty seconds on merit although they would need a final stop to make it to the end. They would make that stop with twenty minutes to go but would then undo all that good work by getting another DTP for repeated excursions across track limits.

That move by the #16 car and the similar pitting of the next two leading GS cars elevated the #46 car back into the race lead with the #19 holding seventh and the #88 car just behind. Whilst Matt Plumb held station out front, both the #19 and #88 cars slowly moved forward in the closing laps.

Securing another race win by over five seconds, the drama was not yet over as the #88 Archangel car managed to get past the #19 VDS car at the end to claim the final step of the podium (their second in succession after their race win last time out at Mid-Ohio) with the #19 car coming home in fourth.

These were also not the sole podium winning achievements of the day as the #82 VDS with Ruckus Racing AMR of Behrman and Blind powered home to finish P13 overall and P1 in Bronze Cup.

Another set of great results to complement another great Michelin Pilot Challenge race. Next stop is Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in four weeks’ time.

Three Vantage GT3 powered crews at GT World Challenge Asias visit to Fuji

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

Just the one last time around but this time there will be three Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s competing at the next round of the GT World Challenge Asia from Fuji in Japan for that and the next round of Japan Cup.

With Le Mans 24Hours otherwise keeping them from their GTWC Asia duties, the #777 D’Station Racing Vantage GT3 of Satoshi Hoshino and Tomonobu Fujii returns after both Tatsuya Hoshino and Kenji Hama doubled for them at the opening round of the Japan Cup Sugo two weeks ago.

Despite being first time out within one of the teams new 2024 Vantage GT3’s, the Am class pairing did secure a P3 in class finish at the end of race 1 although that was countered with a DNF in race 2.

Whilst the #777 crew run again within the main body of the GT World Challenge Asia Series, the sister #47 Vantage GT3 for Tatsuya Hoshino and Kenji Hama will run within the sub-Japan Cup class alongside sixteen other GT3 and GT4 entries. There will be thirty-three cars running within the main GTWCAsia grid making for a very busy racetrack.

Completing the AMR trilogy at the event will be the return of the #8 Earl Bamber Motorsport prepared Vantage GT3 for solo racer Setiawan Santosa.
