Mixed bag for Solaris AMR at Imola

Sunday, May 29, 2016

Going into their second round of their domestic Italian GT Series, Aston Martin Racing newcomers Solaris Motorsport were hoping to improve upon the mid table finishes at the opening round when they visited Imola this weekend.

Having tested there with TF Sport a couple of weeks ago the team were confident of both their pace and car setup to such an extent as they were continually in the top three during the two Free Practice sessions.

Starting Saturday's Race 1 from P3, team boss and lead driver Francesco Sini looked especially quick, picking off the the #8 Audi Sport Italia car in front of it for second over the opening laps before later dropping back to third just before the pit stop and driver change. With Max Mugelli now at the wheel he was made to work hard to keep the catching #32 Imperial Racing Lamborgini Huracan behind him.

By race end the #32 had indeed passed the #007 on track but was later excluded from the results which left the Solaris Team with P3 overall - their highest result in the series yet.

Race 2 Sunday morning was a completely different affair- gone had the clear blue skies and sunshine only to be replaced with torrential rain that was also blighting other locations of motorsport in Monaco and at the Nurburgring.

Track conditions were treacherous for Mugelli who's turn it was to start the race and whilst many around him were losing their heads and control of their cars he kept their GT3 firmly on the black up  until he came in for his stop. With the faster Sini now at the wheel he wouldn't be able to improve upon their position of P6 as Race Control were forced to Red Flag the race short of the distance due to the deteriorating conditions.

The next round of the series is at Misano in two weeks time.

Smallest of problems ends Miedecke's GT hopes

Saturday, May 28, 2016

Having transported their two new Aston Martin V12 Vantages over to Melbourne's Phillip Island racetrack for the fourth round of the Australian GT Championship, father and son team Andrew and George Miedecke were hoping for something a little special from their latest acquisitions.

However, a strong reality check was to creep back into both of their Matt Stone Racing prepared cars leaving the team chasing multiple, yet  relatively minor faults all through Free Practice that left the team plum last at the end of the session having only completed 4 laps. On the other hand the Tony Quinn/Daniel Gaunt AMR GT3 stablemate finished free practice in P3.

Race one was surprisingly good for the #95 former Craft Bamboo Racing car after having started 27th Miedecke Jnr elevated it to finish P9 with the Darrel Lea Quinn/Gaunt car on the podium in third.

Race 2 was however just as disappointing as the Free Practice was was a simple $2.00Aus part struck the car down for it to see out the race from the garage after only 9 laps leaving Miedecke Snr frustrated within.

Tomorrow sees the team move over to their blue and orange former Craft Bamboo racing car for the 101 lap race of the Australian Endurance Championship - hopefully things will go better for them in that!!

Aston Martin takes top eight slot for Nürburgring 24 Hours start

Friday, May 27, 2016

Aston Martin Racing has qualified in 8th place in the 2016 Nürburgring 24 Hours, while close-to-production Aston Martin Vantage GT8 takes pole position in the SP8 class.

With Nicki Thiim (DN) at the hands of the #007 V12 Vantage GT3, the Dane achieved a lap time of 8m20.332 to secure eighth position in the IQ Option livered challenger. Despite an incident ridden session which saw portions of the track yellow flagged, Thiim retained his composure to claim the position.

Thiim said following the session, “The conditions were tricky for the shootout and straight away you could see cars going off on the warm up lap. I took it easy on the first flying lap as the second lap was always going to be drier and faster. The lap felt good: the tyres felt good and the car felt strong. I’m really looking forward to the race tomorrow”.

He added, “It looks like we will have some interesting weather conditions so getting through the night is important. The level of competition is very high here this year. Everyone has brought their best, so the bar has been raised again. It’s good to be part of this event”.

The sister Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 driven by Richie Stanaway (NZ) took 18th place for the race tomorrow with a lap time of 8m25.204.

Dan Sayers, Aston Martin Racing Technical Director, said, “Nicki put together two excellent laps, despite the difficult conditions. We’ll go into the race tomorrow feeling very optimistic. The important thing to do here is stay out of trouble until Sunday morning and then we can attack from there”.

The Aston Martin team also celebrated a pole position today in the SP8 class, as its close-to-production Vantage GT8 achieved a lap time of 9m08.961 at the hands of Darren Turner during the second qualifying session. Permitted by Nürburgring 24 Hour regulations, Turner switched duties from his regular GT3 entry to qualify the #42 Vantage GT8 over 10 seconds clear of its nearest rival.

Turner said, “I’m really pleased with the performance of the Vantage GT8. It’s fun to drive two different cars here and to be on the SP8 pole is a great start to the weekend. I’ll start the race in that car and I’m expecting it to be as eventful as ever. The aim is to pass the car over to one of my team mates in one piece after that opening stint before I switch into the GT3”.

David King, Vice President and Chief Special Operations Officer added, “We had a really good two sessions with the Vantage GT8. This morning we were subjected to a damp track, but knowing it would dry out we decided to wait for the right moment. We had the benefit of having Darren available in the team and he was able to place the car in pole position by some margin. He’ll start in the car tomorrow and we’re feeling positive ahead of the race.”

The Nürburgring 24 Hours begins tomorrow at 15:30 CET with live streams available at: http://www.24h-rennen.de/en/live-streams/

Get set for an unmissable Nurburgring 24H tomorrow!

Friday, May 27, 2016

If the last forty minutes or so from the top 30 shootout session used to determine pole position for the ADAC Zurich 24Hour race at the Nordschleife was anything to go by, tomorrows race is all set to be another cracker.

With various fancied local favourites putting their steads into the armco barrier in what were very difficult racing conditions it was left to those with cool heads to secure their starting positions. Both #007 and #27 Aston Martin Racing GT3's made the Top 30 from the todays earlier qualifying sessions leaving Nicki Thiim and Richie Stanaway to do the business this evening in the shootout.

Despite repeated double yellow flag zones around the circuit it was Thiim who gave his team the 'best' nail biting lap to finish just over five seconds behind the pole setting Mercedes AMG in P8. The sister Stanaway #27 car will start from P18.

Down in SP8 Aston Martin's Vantage GT8 was by far the pick of that bunch with Darren Turner putting in the quickest lap to put the Nexcel liveried car on class pole in what is only its third race!

Tomorrow afternoons start can't come soon enough!

Andrew Jarman joins GT3 Le Mans Cup at Road to Le Mans support event

Friday, May 27, 2016

Milton Keynes racer Andrew Jarman is set to make his GT3 racing return when he rejoins TF Sport for Round 2 of the new 2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup. Jarman makes his return at the world famous Circuit de la Sarthe during the 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend in June.

Making his Le Mans return after a podium finish at last year’s Aston Martin Festival race driving for Japanese team Alpha Classics Racing, Jarman will make his GT3 Le Mans Cup debut with round one winners TF Sport. Competing in the British team’s Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 he reforms a successful partnership that has secured multiple wins and pole positions over the last two season’s of British GT.

Driving alongside 2014 British GT4 team-mate Devon Modell, Jarman is confident of a strong return to racing despite an extended winter break.

“Its great to be back in a GT3 car and to do it at Le Mans with the TF Sport team is going to be an amazing experience, said Jarman. “After a strong end to British GT last year I wanted to keep pushing towards the goal of entering the Le Mans 24 Hour in the future and the GT3 Le Mans Cup is such a fantastic new series I had to be part of it.

No doubt it will be very tough straight out the box but I know the circuit from last year’s Festival race and obviously know the team very. TF Sport has already had an amazing start to the year winning at round one with Salih [Yoluc] and Euan [Hankey]. It will be great to drive alongside Devon again after we narrowly missed out on the British GT title in 2014 so the ingredients are there for a good result, let’s wait and see!”

Solaris Motorsport heads to Imola in Italian GT

Thursday, May 26, 2016

This weekend the Italian GT Championship resumes with the second round of the season, with two races scheduled on Imola's historical Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. After the debut in Monza, where the Solaris Motorsport Aston Martin showed a great potential and came really close to the podium in Race 1, the track on the Santerno river should favour the characteristics of the Italian Vantage GT3. The Italian GT series will field a record-breaking grid, with 41 cars expected on track.

“Imola, with its ups and downs and lots of turns, fits better our Aston Martin than the straights of Monza. - said Francesco Sini, driver - In the last test session we found new setup solutions and I think they could give us a big step forward here where the chassis can make the difference. I like Imola, when I was in Superstars on the wet with my Camaro I was able to challenge the AWD cars and last year we were very competitive with the Corvette and only bad luck took a good position away from us. This year we start from a better condition and we want to take what we lost 12 months ago.”

The race of the Italian GT Championship comes a short time after the Italian round of the GT3 Le Mans Cup, raced exactly in Imola, which saw another Aston Martin win the race. “We worked closely with our Aston brothers of TF Sport in the last weeks and we are very happy about their win. Obviously this is great news for us and makes us very confident, we have the chance to concretize the high potential we saw in Monza.” commented Max Mugelli, winner of the 2006 Aston Martin Racing Cup. “Imola is an old school track, it is very demanding for the cars and mostly for the brakes, but I know very well the track and I like it. Our Vantage has a good pace in race conditions, it is delicate with the tires and this can be an advantage at the end of the race. But we need to improve the qualifying, where probably we aren’t on top yet. On tracks like this, where it is very hard find the way to overtake, having a good position on the grid becomes very important. But I’m confident for the race because I know the team is working in the best way e and my team mate Francesco is a very fast guy. I feel good: we have everything to fight the top positions!”

“Everything was new for us in Monza, there were a lot of things to fix and we discovered an Italian GT Championship with a very high level of competition. Despite that, we showed great performances but we could not concretize our potential.” declared Roberto Sini, Solaris Motorsport Team Principal. “Now we know better the car and its secrets, we had a good test session and both Max and Francesco have now more confidence with the Vantage. The win of our Aston Martin brothers from TF Sport makes us more confident but, in the meantime, gives us also more responsibility, we must find the way to concretize the potential we know we have.”

The second rount of the Italian GT Championship from Imola will start on Friday, May 27th with the two session of free practice, scheduled at 10:35 AM and 2:30 PM. On Saturday morning the green light for the two qualifying sessions, one for each race, will turn on at 8:55 AM and 9:15 AM. Race 1 will start at 3 PM on Saturday, May 28th, while Race 2 is scheduled for Sunday, May 29st, at 12:40 AM. Both the races will be live streamed on the official website of the Italian GT Championship (www.acisportitalia.it/CIGT).

Turner to complete ELMS season with Beechdean AMR

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Aston Martin Racing factory driver Darren Turner will continue his assault on the European Le Mans Series with Andrew Howard, Alex Macdowall and Beechdean AMR for the rest of the 2016 season.

Turner, who was originally substituting for fellow Aston Martin Racing factory driver Jonny Adam, has come to an agreement in recent days to continue leading Beechdean AMR's GTE squad. Adam, who currently leads the British GT GT3 class and is 2nd in the Blancpain GT endurance Pro-Am class, will switch his focus to these series, as well as his FIA World Endurance Championship commitments.

“Originally there were no plans for me to race in the European Le mans Series this year but a clash of dates for Jonny (Adam) meant that I jumped in for the Silverstone and Imola rounds”, commented Turner. “The programme has now been extended for the full season which I’m excited about, especially as we are leading the championship. I’m looking forward to working with Andrew and Alex and all of the Beechdean AMR team for the full season.”

Team boss and driver Andrew Howard said in regards to the announcement, “It will be great having Darren Turner in the car for the rest of the season, his experience has really helped at the first two rounds. I wish Jonny all the best with his assault on 3 massive championships”

The #99 Beechdean Aston Martin Racing V8 GTE car currently holds a slender advantage in the European Le Mans Series GTE title race. The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria, hosts the third round of the championship.

The GTE will be in action next at the blue ribbon Le Mans 24 hour race on 15/19th June.

BoP changes affect TF Sport's GT Open plans

Thursday, May 26, 2016

Battling performances in Round 2 of the 2016 International GT Open at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (21-22 May) saw TF Sport achieve a brace of sixth place finishes, but the team hopes for more going into the next instalment at Circuit Paul Ricard (4-5 June).

An inter-round shift in the GT Open’s Balance of Performance (BoP) placed the TF Sport Aston Martin V12 Vantage on the back foot in qualifying, but solid stints by both Euan Hankey and Salih Yoluc the first of two races saw them climb as high as fourth.

Sadly, their charge stalled when an unprecedented suspension issue developed with approximately eight laps remaining, understeer causing a loss in pace and resigning TF Sport to an unrepresentative sixth place result.

The team hoped for better in race two, but Spa, which is perched in Belgium's beautiful Ardennes Forest, is renowned for its wild weather and a heavy downpour saturated the circuit just prior to the start on Sunday (22 May) afternoon.

The rapidly deteriorating conditions prompted officials to commence the hour-long race behind the Safety Car and it was some 20 minutes before the field was set loose.

The delay ultimately prevented TF Sport from maximising a strategy that went against the grain. The plan was to utilise Hankey’s supreme speed to build a healthy advantage over his Am counterparts in the opening stint, but the British Pro was shackled by the Safety Car and the lead he held at the stops wasn;t sufficient for Yoluc to maintain.

Having clocked up very few wet miles in the Aston Martin, Yoluc was powerless to defend against far more experienced drivers and tentatively circulated the sopping Spa circuit to once again take the chequered flag in sixth.

TF Sport Director, Tom Ferrier, said: “A pair of sixth places is probably as much as we could have expected. Qualifying was average because we were a bit disadvantaged with the Balance of Performance, and we would have finished fourth in race one, had it not been for the strange and unprecedented suspension issue. Spending 20 minutes behind the Safety Car really didn’t help our cause in race two and, with hindsight it would have been better to start Salih (Yoluc) and run Euan (Hankey) in the final stint.”

The International GT Open picks up at Circuit Paul Ricard (4-5 June), which sits on France’s Mediterranean coast in Le Castellet, and there’s hope that a clean, problem-free weekend will yield results that are truly representative of TF Sport’s speed and ability.

Ferrier said: “I don’t think the results we achieved at Spa are representative of our pace, the team’s ability and our setup. It was more down to circumstance and that’s why I’m pleased with the outcome and confident moving forwards to the next round at Circuit Paul Ricard.”

Learning curve continues for MacMillan Racing youngsters in BGT

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Drivers Matty Graham and Jack Mitchell have endured a trying start to their 2016 British GT campaign - but are hoping that the pair of races at Oulton Park will finally allow them to challenge for a podium finish.

Caught up in a massive crash in the season-opener at Brands Hatch, their Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT3 was destroyed - fortunately without any injuries - leading to a race against time to make the grid two weeks later in Rockingham.

Specialists at Aston Martin Racing - together with the Macmillan Racing team technicians - achieved the near-impossible, rebuilding the car into a brand-new chassis in just six days, ensuring the team would make the Rockingham race.

Power-steering failure in the first hour at Rockingham stymied efforts to work the car into the podium spots. Instead, the boys had an upper-body workout of epic proportions.

Cue more super-human effort - this time from both drivers - to ensure the team claimed their first-ever points, finishing 6th - exhausted but happy.

Both of the first two races were run over a two-hour format but the Oulton Park weekend will be different - a pair of one-hour races on Bank Holiday Monday.

The different dynamic brings with it more new challenges for both drivers but it’s perhaps closer to the sprint-style races that have formed their careers to date.

“Coming from a single-seater background, the shorter races this weekend will be a little more familiar,” reckons Matty Graham. “The longer format races mean you have a lot more time at the wheel - so you can plan your move and wait for the right opportunity. At Oulton, you’ll have to be on it right from the moment the lights change.

“That should be good for us, as we’ve been fast right from the start, previously.”

“Oulton Park is a little like Brands Hatch,” adds Jack Mitchell, “an old-style circuit. And like Brands, it’s fast and pretty unforgiving. There’s not a lot of run-off area, which means mistakes are punished.

“Oulton Park is one of my favourite tracks. I’ve raced there for the past three years and I know things can get pretty tight, so pit-stops will be critical - you can win or lose a race in the pits.”

“It feels like forever since we’ve been in the car,” laughs Matty. “I just can’t wait to get back out there.”

“It’s been a tough start to the season, no question,” Team Principal David Macmillan says. “The boys have driven superbly, the team have worked miracles and we know we have the speed to be regular podium finishers and even race winners.

“Perhaps Lady Luck will pull her socks up a little, over the Bank Holiday Weekend and give us a little good fortune, for a change…”

PFL Motorsport looking forward to home race in BGT

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Oulton Park in Cheshire will host the next round of the spectacular British GT Championship on May 30th and for the PFL Team and Driver Peter Littler this is the first opportunity to race in front of their home crowd. Peter, from Halton, has already made an impact on the series and approaches the third race of the season following a successful test at the Cheshire track last week in his 600HP Aston Martin.

“We had our first chance this season to work through a test programme last Friday and it was really useful to improve our understanding of the car and to make it work for us.” reported Peter after the one-day test. “The Vantage GT3 is such a complex piece of kit, it can be adjusted in every aspect, with electronics, suspension, ride heights and the aerodynamics so there is always an improvement to be found which is why testing is so rewarding”

Remarkably Peter, who is classed as 40% disabled is going into only his third GT race this weekend has set his sights on another top ten finish. The format changes this weekend to 2 races, each lasting 1 hour with each driver taking a 30 minute stint before changing over mid race.

PFL Driver Jody Fannin explained “The pit lane at Oulton mirrors the track feature, it is narrow and will be very crowded during the compulsory driver change window so this will be a critical part of the race” This provides significant challenge for Pete, an amputee with false hips and a plethora of bolts and plates holding his pelvis and spine in place but the team and drivers have been practising and making adjustments in the cockpit to assist the drivers during the changeover.

Qualifying will take place on Saturday afternoon with the races at 1115 and 1530 on Bank Holiday Monday where there will be a 30 strong field of some of the most iconic sports car brands fighting it out on the narrow and undulating Oulton Park Circuit.

TRG-Aston Martin Racing Earns Three Wins, Six Podiums Over PWC Race Weekend

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

TRG-AMR’s reputation for success at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park hit a high point after the team’s four drivers secured a win, two 1-2 finishes, and a 3rd place podium during the Pirelli World Challenge race weekend. Max Riddle, Kris Wilson, Jason Alexandridis and Derek DeBoer took home ten Champagne-soaked trophies in total from Saturday and Sunday’s events. All drivers raced Aston Martin V8 Vantages in the first two rounds of the new SprintX series; Riddle competed in two GTS races.

An exceptionally high point of the weekend was when Vancouver native Max Riddle won his first-ever GTS race on Sunday, at what is considered his “home track” in the PWC series. Riddle, along with his teammate Wilson, returned to Canada to defend their pole position from last year. The field of skilled drivers and extremely competitive cars showed no mercy while attempting to pursue the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and at times the gap between Riddle and the following car was less than a tenth of a second. After taking 3rd place on Saturday, Riddle’s determination to taste victory was sated with a triumphant win on Sunday. Wilson, who acts as both coach and teammate to Riddle, was a winning co-driver in their No. 07 TRG-AMR Adobe Road Winery/LaSalle Solutions Aston Martin Vantage GT4, sharing wins with Max in both SprintX races.

The Alexandridis/DeBoer driver pair enjoyed consistent 2nd-place success after taking their No 09 BRM Chronographes/Rebounderz/Rohnert Park/Racing for Cancer/Pirata Della Strada/Simon Ward car to the podium for both inaugural SprintX races. Along with the Riddle/Wilson duo, TRG-AMR took a 1-2 finish in both of these new race formats, which involves a pit stop with a driver change. Neither DeBoer nor Alexandridis had ever raced at CTMP before, making their podium success all the sweeter. Consistently successful racing from all four drivers resulted in heavy media coverage throughout the race weekend.

“I couldn’t be happier about this weekend at CTMP. 4 out of 4 podiums with 3 wins! At my home track, in my home country, in front of all the home fans. It’s an amazing feeling. I also couldn’t be more proud of the team. Everyone at TRG-AMR did a fantastic job and put together an amazing car for me and Kris to go out and race with. Another thing that was awesome about the races at CTMP was doing the new SprintX races with my longtime endurance racing teammate and coach, Kris Wilson. Kris and I share a lot of our successes together and we added some more to that list with the two inaugural SprintX wins. A huge thanks goes out to everyone at TRG, Kevin Buckler, Kris Wilson, my dad Dave and also a congratulation is in order for my teammates Derek DeBoer and Jason Alexandridis for finishing 2nd in both SprintX races!” — Max Riddle, No 07

“What a great weekend! Outstanding results finishing 2nd in each of the first rounds of Pirelli World Challenge SprintX. You never know what to expect showing up at a new track but I definitely have a new favorite to add to the list. As always, the entire TRG team gave us the car and support to get the job done. I also want to thank BRM Chronographes, Pirata Della Strada, Racing For Cancer, Simon Ward Artist, my co-driver Jason and my wife and girls cheering from home. With 3 podiums out of my last 3 races, I’m feeling like we're on a roll. Time for that top step!” — Derek DeBoer, No 09

“CTMP was one of the most fun, high-speed tracks I’ve ever been on. It demands quite a bit of respect and based on our experience level and who Derek and I were racing against, I feel good about our performance! I want to thank the TRG-AMR crew because the car has never felt better. The stability of the Aston Martin boosted my confidence on this demanding track. I also want to thank my family for cheering me on from home and then flying out to meet me after the race – I appreciate the time they took to support me while I raced in Canada!” — Jason Alexandridis, No 09

“Canada is awesome. Maybe I'll move here to live with my teammate Max. I love this place. Awesome weekend!” — Kris Wilson, No 07

Final results:
Race 1: GTS: Max Riddle, 3rd
Race 2: GTS: Max Riddle, 1st
Race 1: SprintX: Riddle/Wilson* 1st, Alexandridis/DeBoer 2nd
Race 2: SprintX: Riddle/Wilson* 1st, Alexandridis/DeBoer 2nd.

*Wilson awarded with fastest lap for both SprintX races.

Aston Martin fired up for Nürburgring 24-Hour challenge

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

British luxury brand Aston Martin and its official motorsport division Aston Martin Racing are set to contest the ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24-hours this weekend (28-29 May).

Aston Martin Racing will travel to Germany’s Eifel region with a pair of V12 Vantage GT3s, with their sights set firmly on the outright win which has so far eluded them despite strong performances in the past three years.

With a circuit length of 16.123 miles, 170 turns, unpredictable weather and strong competition from a field of nearly 200 starters, only a perfect run will secure victory.

Having competed at the Nordschleife earlier this year, achieving 4th and 8th place in the circuit’s VLN 2 race at the end of April, the team is confident of the potential of this year’s V12 Vantage GT3.

The #007 entry piloted by Darren Turner (GB), Nicki Thiim (DN), Marco Sørensen (DN) and Pedro Lamy (P) will feature the livery of new partner IQ Option. The #27 car will carry an Aston Martin Vantage GT8 inspired livery and will be crewed by Richie Stanaway (NZ), Mathias Lauda (A), Jonny Adam (GB) and Fernando Rees (BR).

Dan Sayers, Aston Martin Racing Technical Director said, “The Nürburgring 24 Hours is a race that should never be underestimated. The Nordschleife is one of the most demanding circuits for our drivers and cars, but we’re confident we have a great package to go out and challenge for the race win. That’s the ultimate goal”.

Alongside its dedicated motorsport outfit, Aston Martin will maintain its long held tradition of subjecting its product to the ultimate engineering sign-off, as it enters a single race-prepared Vantage GT8 in the event’s close-to-production SP8 class.

Launched at the first round of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Silverstone, the Vantage GT8 is the latest limited edition sports car to be produced by the company’s in-house Special Operations department and is strictly limited to a production run of 150 units worldwide. Inspired by the V8 Vantage GTE cars that compete in the WEC endurance series globally, the Nürburgring 24 hours will give the Vantage GT8 its first taste of competition.

The Vantage GT8 will also debut Castrol’s revolutionary NEXCEL system. The NEXCEL system is a sealed oil cell, which contains both the engine oil and an oil filter, which can easily be removed and replaced by hand.

Taking just 90 seconds to replace the cell, the process is similar to replacing a printer cartridge. The sealed unit ensures that used oil is collected safely and refined. Designed with the mass market in mind, its use on Vantage GT8 will subject it to the harshest of testing conditions while even allowing a mid-race oil change in less time than it takes to refuel.

The #42 Vantage GT8 will be driven by Nürburgring ace Andy Gülden, Aston Martin N24 regular Peter Cate and Dr. Florian Kamelger. As allowed by Nürburgring 24 Hour regulations, Darren Turner will also join the trio for a stint in the Vantage GT8, as he continues his involvement with Aston Martin’s road car development, which has most recently included the track-only Aston Martin Vulcan supercar.

David King, Vice President and Chief Special Operations Officer, said, “The Nürburgring is a track where we conduct a large quantity of our testing throughout the year and to be able to prove the racing credentials of our sports cars is a hugely rewarding and important exercise. After showing strong pace last year with our Vantage GT12 racer, I’m confident that this year’s Vantage GT8 has the potential to have a very successful weekend”.

Alongside Aston Martin’s factory entries, former Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez will once again take on the Nordschleife, racing the #65 V12 Vantage prepared by Aston Martin’s Nürburgring Technical Centre in the SP8 class, and partnered by Technical Centre Director Wolfgang Schuhbauer and Heinz-Jürgen Kroner.. In total, seven Aston Martin Vantages will enter the Nürburgring 24 Hours including the highly competitive entry of Mathol Racing – perennial challengers in the SP10 class for GT4 cars.

Last test session for AMR before the onslaught of the Le Mans 24Hr

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Following on from Aston Martin Racing running a single car at an extended night test session at Magny-Cours, France last weekend, the team have today moved on to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy for a final shakedown/test prior to making their way to La Sarthe in readiness for the forthcoming Official Test next weekend.

Todays test saw the team draw upon the services of Darren Turner, Marco Sorensen, Nicki Thiim and Jonny Adam to drive both the #95 and #97 GTE Pro cars around the 3.6mile circuit having had Fernando Rees and Marco Sorensen complete the night test last week. It is understood that todays test is being run in conjunction with other Dunlop supplied teams across the GTE and LMP2/1 classes and was the first run out for the #95 since it rolled after a collision with an LMP2 car at Spa.

The Le Mans official test will be held this year on Sunday 5th June however the cars and drivers will be required to undertake the normal level of scrutineering starting on the Thursday before that. It is then customary for the teams to leave their cars (subject to having no significant issues) and garages in situe before returning to the circuit ready for the start race week itself.

On another Le Mans 24 note, Prodrive have today published a photo of Beechdean Motorsport's new boy Gary Hirsch having his seat fitting done in their #99 GTE Am car in readiness for their first LM24 entry. He joins team boss Andrew Howard and British GT racer Liam Griffin.

Many of the team and all of the factory drivers will now drive north ready for the start of the Nürburgring 24H that starts this week.

Will he or won't he do the double?

Monday, May 23, 2016

Having asked the very question earlier ourselves it appears (via the confirmation from TF Sport at least) that Aston Martin Racing factory driver WILL be competing at BOTH British GT from Oulton Park and the Nurburgring 24Hour from the Nordschleife in support of both his factory and customer obligations.

Remembering the disappointment of 'loosing' him from the opening round of the WEC and ELMS at Silverstone in April due to his customer commitments elsewhere in another series, that scenario is thankfully one that appears to be not the case this weekend.

He can always catch a few zed's on the plane!!

A frustrating weekend for TF Sport in Spa

Monday, May 23, 2016

Riding high on the crest of the wave that was the teams victory at Imola last weekend, TF Sport arrived at the Belgium Spa Francorchamps circuit with high expectation for what was the second round of the International GT Open Series.

Featuring a fifteen car grid drivers Salih Yoluc and Euan Hankey also needed a good haul of points on the board after having to withdraw from both races at round one in Estoril due to accident damage in April.

Early indications were good with the #34 car posted the quickest time (by nearly half a second) from the chasing pack in the first of the Free Practice session's -  then in FP2, and despite the car dropping down to third overall, the cars pace had improved by over a second since the morning.

However, qualifying for Race 1 was another story and despite posting a similar time to that in FP2 the best the car could achieve for the race on Saturday was starting from P9 and a whole three seconds off the pole setting pace of one of the Teo Martin BMW M6's!!

With clear blue skies and high track temperatures the field undertook their rolling start followed the expected bumping and rubbing into La Source that allowed starting driver Salih Yoluc to pick up a few easy places only to loose half of them again down the Kemmel Straight. After only five minutes of racing the top six had already broken away from the pack but a mistake from the leading BMW put himself off and heavily into the tyre wall at Pouhon, damage that would see the Safety car neutralise and control the field for the next twenty minutes. By the time the green flags were shown the pit window had opened and Yoluc pitted.

Exiting the pits back in ninth it was time for the teams Pro driver Euan Hankey to push but the cars apparent lack of straight line speed and twitchiness in the corners was apparent and despite everyones best efforts a finishing position of P6 was the best the team could muster.

Post race inspection found that a failing bearing in the cars suspension was the route cause of the car's chronic understeer although the lack of terminal speed was down to an 'unfavourable' Balance of Power.

Qualifying for Sunday's Race 2 was better with the team finishing in P4, this time just half a second down to the pole McLaren but with this time weather looked like it would have an impact on the racing later that day. Indeed, by the time Race 2 came about the heavens had opened and the circuit was awash with rain to such degree that the race had to be started behind the Safety Car.

With Hankey at the wheel for the start of Race 2 each lap behind the Safety Car would be a waste of his talent as others around him had their Gentleman driver at the wheel for the start. After more than twenty minutes had elapsed behind the Safety Car Hankeys remaining time would prove insufficient for him to allow Yoluc to defend the cars track position against Pro drivers once the compulsory stops had been made.

Just five minutes after pitting the chasing pack had caught and passed the beleaguered Yoluc who quickly had to realise that P6 was the best that was available to them again and would drive a defensive and percentage race for the final twenty minutes.

A disappointing end to a weekend that started so well for the team. The team will now continue its hectic european adventure at next race in the GT Open series at Paul Ricard, France over the 5 and 6th June. With the car presently blighted with a lower than preferred straight line speed that could be another difficult weekend too.

Oulton Park double-header next for British GT racer Giddings

Monday, May 23, 2016

British GT Championship racer Jake Giddings resumes his 2016 season at Oulton Park International Circuit in Cheshire just a few days from now, over Bank Holiday weekend, where he has his sights squarely fixed on a season-best result at the wheel of his JWB Motorsport-run Aston Martin.

Following a test outing at the 2.69-mile track on Friday, 20th May, where the Wisbech racer and team-mate Kieran Griffin gained some vital mileage in readiness for rounds three and four of the campaign, hopes are now high ahead of the third event of the season.

Going into the first ‘double-header’ event of the year, where a brace of shorter than usual one-hour races will be contested, the team-mates are third in the Pro-Am GT4 standings and determined to significantly improve on the ninth place finishes achieved thus far in rounds one and two.

During the break since the previous British GT event at Rockingham at the beginning of the month, 21-year-old Jake made a return to one-make competition in the Renault UK Clio Cup at Thruxton but he is now fully focused on the resumption of his main 2016 programme.

It’s certainly been a challenging year up to now for the GT4 duo – a split oil pipe hampering Griffin’s preparations for the season-opener at Brands Hatch and contact from a GT3 car last time out at Rockingham leaving the No.47 Aston Martin carrying significant steering damage.

Qualifying, though, has been the biggest stumbling block up to now for the JWB pairing, but with the one-hour format comes a change in qualifying procedure as well – rather than combined times forming the starting grid, one driver will set the grid for race one and the other for race two.

Pro driver Jake, therefore, is hoping he can achieve a grid slot in the top two or three during his session to give the team its best opportunity yet to battle for a season-first GT4 podium in the Irish TV, Finesse Paving and Civil Engineering, Cowley Road Garage and Toppesfield-backed Aston Martin.

“The one hour races are more of a sprint really, obviously we only get half an hour in the car each so qualifying is more important than ever”, said Jake, “If we can get Kieran up to speed straight away, and the test should help keep everything fresh in his mind, then we should be OK. If qualifying doesn’t work out, the races will be a big challenge and especially if we get any Safety Cars.

“Oulton’s not a bad track for the Aston, it suits the car pretty well and the straights should help us keep up with the Ginettas. Traffic could be a problem as the circuit is pretty tight, but we’ll go into the race weekend aiming for the top five and then see if we can be in with a chance of anything better – hopefully we will!”

Opening practice at Oulton Park on Saturday, 28th May, will get underway at 09.30 with the second session following at 12.35 and GT4 qualifying beginning at around 16.15. After a day off from track action on Sunday, 29th May, round three of the championship will take place at 11.15 on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May, with round four set to commence at 15.30.

Aston Martin Racing return to the "Green Hell' with a two car factory line up in their pursuance of snatching glory from the home based manufacturers who have mastered this event for so long. They have the assistance of its eight professional drivers currently employed within the World Endurance Championship.

#007 Drivers - Nicki Thiim - Marco Sorensen - Darren Turner - Pedro Lamy

2015 was somewhat of a disappointing year for AMR with their leading car suffering both mishap and technical issues to finish ten laps down to the eventual winner down in sixteenth place whilst its sister car failed to finish.

#27 Drivers = Fernando Rees - Jonny Adam - Mathia Lauda - Richie Stanaway

Parent company Aston Martin Lagonda also return with one of their race car cum road car turned racing car - the recently released Vantage GT8. They did similar last year with a brace of the its then new 'cousin' - the Vantage GT12. We are not too sure if the driver line up for this car has been quite finalised or not as that would place one driver in two cars for the event.

#42 Drivers = Peter Cate - Florian Kamelger - Darren Turner

As well as three full season VLN entries from Avia Racing, Fanclub Mathol Racing and from the Aston Martin Test Centre itself in their respective SP10 (V8 GT4's) and SP8 (V12) Vantages respectively, we also get to see new Technical Partner AF Racing / R Motorsport's V8 SP8 Vantage entry for the first time. This team, together with its direct association with Aston Martin St Gallen form part of the new technical association announced by Aston Martin Lagonda with Red Bull Racing in the factory's quest to design and build a new hyper car with designer Adrian Newey.

#43 Andreas Banniger - Mal Rose - Peter Lemhuis seen here at winter test at Valencia

Thursday's track activity kicks off with the only Free Practice session of the event in the afternoon before nearly four hours of Qualifying 1 that ends just before midnight. Rolling in Saturday morning there are a further two hours of Qualifying 2 to decide the now infamous forty minute Top 30 shoot out starting just before 20:00hrs local.

#65 Drivers = Heinz-Jürgen Kroner - Wolfgang Schuhbauer - Dr. Ulrich Bez

#76 Drivers = Wolfgang Weber - Norbert Bermes - Scott Preacher - Hendrik Still
