T minus 4 days for ACO reveal

Monday, January 30, 2017

If you didn't already realise, Thursday 2nd February 2017 is set as the 'big reveal' for entries being accepted into the 2017 World Endurance Championship, the European Le Mans Series and for the 85th running of the Le Mans 24 itself.

As you will see above, the event is scheduled to start at 15.00hrs GMT and will be live and fully interactive for race fans across the world to view and ask questions via the series' social media accounts using the hashtag #endurance2017

We already know that GT3 Le Mans Cup Team Championship winners, TF Sport have been initiated to compete in the LM24 in the GTE Am class whilst Beechdean AMR have also received a similar invitation by virtue of winning last years ELMS GTE championship.

We do know from social media traffic that Beechdean AMR shall be returning with their GTE into (at least) the ELMS series with only a small driver change. There is no word as yet of any TF Sport entry into either the ELMS or Le Mans Cup as they would have to do to comply with their LM24 invitation.

As far as the WEC is concerned, we can assume that #95 Young Driver AMR shall return to defend their Team and Driver Championships alongside at least one other GTE Pro entry and GTE Am entry. Two big question here is (a) drivers - who with who and where? and (b) will Beechdean and the #98 GTE Am squad utilise the availability of 2016 machinery this year??

It also wouldn't be beyond possibility to see Beechdean AMR join the WEC party with at least a partial WEC season covering the European rounds.

We shall find out soon ……………………….

AMR entries leave CTSC opener bruised and empty handed

Monday, January 30, 2017

Last weekend's opening round of the 2017 Continental Tyre Sports Car Challenge at the Daytona Motor Speedway left the three Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 entries ruing what might have been after a dramatic opening four hour encounter.

With long term series entrants Automatic Racing and TRG-AMR entering three cars between them, a thirty eight car - two category field around the infamous banked circuit was always going to add for good racing and this was no different.

Sunoco Challenge winner Max Bladon took his seat in the #09 Automatic Racing car having tried a GT4 platform for the first time at the Roar and was left (on Saturday) to qualify the yellow and blue in P15 whilst the sister #99 car qualified up in P7. The single TRG-AMR entry of Craig Lyons and Chris Wilson started slightly further back in P17.

After a two lap warm up the race itself started under caution as one of the brand new McLaren's had stopped on track on their out lap but at least that FCY was short lived allowing the cars to get down to racing.

Al Carter in the #99 quickly set about chasing down the pole setting new Ford Mustang's ahead whilst  Bladon and Lyons both held their station throughout the first half hour in the ultra competitive midfield.

The first #TeamAMR casualty was unfortunately the #3 TRG-AMR after just 40 minutes of racing when Lyons entered the bus stop slightly too fast and spun around and back out onto the banking before being immediately collected by the following #4 Porsche Cayman ending both cars race with substantial damage all round. The subsequent FCY at least allowed both the #99 and #09 Automatic Racing cars to pit and double stint their existing drivers to hold P4 and P13 respectively.

With this round being an extended four hour encounter, strategy from the teams with their two or three driver line up would be crucial as each driver would require a 45 minute minimum drive time on top of the fuel and tyre considerations.

Further cautions of track would allow Carter and Bladon to continue until just after the ninety minute mark before they eventually handed their cars over.

The #99 car now had Rob Ecklin behind the wheel but one of his first introductions into the race was being tapped into a harmless but race damaging spin at the Western Horseshoe - that would drop them down to P6 whilst Ramin Abdolvahabi (now in the #09) had dropped back from P9 to P12 before a spin for him going in too hot at T2 would loose them more time as well.

The final driver changes were made with an hour remaining - Charles Espenlaub was now in the #99 car and soon battling for a top three position as he and three other cars bore down on an unsuspecting Chris Beaufait coming off the banking into turn 1!!

However, just two laps later their chance of a podium would effectively end as the #77 McLaren dropped fluid all around the circuit between turns 2 and 6 sending both Automatic Racing cars this way and that as they (and many others) spun off the circuit at speed. Worse was to befall Espenlaub as having already dropped to P8 with that spin he also had to pit again to take on fresh rubber.

The length of clean up to that incident left just 30 minutes of racing - enough time at least for Espenlaub to try and recover the situation in the hope of bolstering their championship point position going into the next round. Come the chequered flag the #99 would finish a disappointing (for them) P7 and the #09 P11.

Daytona's display showed that the newer Ford's, Porsche's and McLarens were susceptible to 'new car' problems in longevity and reliability whilst the Vanatge GT4 is a proven platform - good things can be expected from this team through out the 2017 CTSC season.

The CTSC series now moves to Sebring in mid March for a 'more traditional' two hour race.

Prodrive striving for further successful in in GT's

Saturday, January 28, 2017

Recent posts on various streams of social media have highlighted just how busy Prodrive have been and indeed are at the moment as they strive to have ready numerous Aston Martin Racing car platforms for the forthcoming 2017 season.

At a recent Aston Martin dealership evening only last week, photos were posted showing the AMR team's V8 Vantage GTE's in various states of reconstruction following their post Bahrain strip down. Other shots posted included two new GTE platforms being prepared which makes you wonder if they will indeed be for Paul Dalla-Lana in the WEC and for Beechdean AMR in the ELMS?

Subsequent to the above photo being taken, at least one of those cars has had its first shakedown test with Darren Turner at the Bruntingthorpe aerodrome this week.

What is obvious from the photos, is the number of GT4 platforms being prepared!!!

With accepted entries into the World Endurance Championship, Le Mans 24 and the European Le Mans Series being announced next week we will not have too ing to wait.

Testing times for Bathurst

Monday, January 23, 2017

Some of you may have noticed that over the last few days a few of next months Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12hrs Aston Martin runners have been testing prior to the big event.

Miedecke Stone Motorsport tested last week at the Queensland Raceway circuit with drivers George Miedecke and Ashley Walsh reuniting and Tony Bates in the teams spare V12 Vantage GT3 chassis for the first time.

Yesterday, we learned that Young Driver AMR boss, Jan Struve is quietly getting up to speed at a two day test at the exclusive Ascari circuit near Malaga in southern Spain.

What has he been driving? Only his Aston Martin Zagato we last saw out at the Aston Martin Racing Festival at the Le Mans 24 in 2015!!

Try this link to see /hear more HERE

Today, we find that Darren Turner has been putting his Base Performance simulator facility to good use as he and fellow R-Motorsport Vantage GT8 driver Florian Kamelger get to grips with the virtual Bathurst circuit - least they had a nice sunny day by the looks!!

First track action of the 2017 event takes place on the morning of Friday 3rd February (local) with the start of the race itself in the early hours of Sunday 5th (local)

CMR Team by Eurasia enter parallel Asian GT series

Friday, January 20, 2017

Just a month after announcing their participation within the Blancpain GT Asia Series, CMR Team by Eurasia have this week also announced an parallel GT programme within the more established GT Asia Series.

With drivers James Cai and Kenneth Lim pairing up again this year, the Eurasia prepared Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GT3 team will now face a twelve round season (across both series) with visits to circuits in China, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia. On top of this news, the team have also confirmed an intention to field a second AMR GT3 platform within the series before its official test in Sepang at the beginning of March with the first rounds at the circuit just a few days later.

This news restores the AMR brand participation within the GT Asia after an ad-hoc approach from Australian based AMR newcomers Miedecke Motorsport last year and Craft Bamboo Racing's twin car effort the year before, where driver Darrly O'Young secured the championship at the final round.

The team remains the sole AMR entry into any of the global Blancpain GT Series which itself kicks off in early April.

Who wants to buy the #95 Aston Martin Racing car?

Wednesday, January 18, 2017

Unfortunately, not that one………!

RacecarsDirect.com  have listed the Young Driver AMR Aston Martin Racing DBR9 that we last saw out at a circuit at the Aston Martin Racing Festival at Le Mans 2015 when team boss Jan Struve was supposed to race it in the 24H support event.

It unfortunately didn't as the fuel cell was beyond its homologation hence it ended the weekend acting as an awning support for the teams Zagato!!

Jan Struve himself is to be seen racing next at the 12Hours of Bathurst as he joins the R-Motorsport team in their V8 Vantage GT4 (see previous listings).

Further details of the car can be found HERE

Jan Struve completes R-Motorsport's GT4 Line up

Sunday, January 15, 2017

Only last week we were speculating that the final seat within R-Motorsport's Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 would be for Aston Martin Lagonda's CEO, Andy Palmer - before he dashed on those matches soon after at least!

Instead, the team have announced that that seat goes to an equally nice guy and fan favourite in Jan Struve, boss of the Danish Young Driver racing team that clinched both the Drivers and GTE Pro teams Championships in the 2016 World Endurance Championship with Marco Sorensen, Nicki Thiim and Aston Martin Racing.

He joins the team for the first time alongside those already announced in the GT4 - Andreas Baenziger and Peter Leemhuis

Miedecke Stone AMR release Bathurst driver line up

Sunday, January 15, 2017

Miedecke Stone AMR have today released the driver line up for their #35 car that shall compete in this years Liqui-Moly 12Hours of Bathurst early next month.

Joining George Miedecke in the Class A (GT3) Vantage shall be Miedecke Stone AMR returnee and regular Porsche jockey Ashley Walsh. Walsh last raced with the team at the fuji round of the GT Asia series last year, helping the team to understand and interpret the racing characteristics of their then new car and even narrowly missing out on a podium finish first time out!

Joining them will also be fellow Porsche racer and Australian GT Endurance Audi contender Tony Bates, who's last unfortunate interaction with the team was to eliminate Andrew Miedecke from the Hampton Downs 101 event when another podium for the MSR team looked possible!

All that will be put behind them as the Australian trio look for a solid performance on the Mountain as the aim for the Am Class win.

The team have also confirmed that the #35 shall be the sole V12 Vantage they will enter into the event.

Autosport International 2017

Sunday, January 15, 2017

Team AMR was again well represented at this years Autosport International Show at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre, a show that we were fortunate enough to visit last Thursday.

Displaying no fewer than four AMR Vantages from across its racing category and with GT cars from other manufacturers, this years show did its best to raise the profile of GT racing in general to a large and captive audience at both a national and international levels.

Featuring on pride of place within the Pirelli stand was last years British GT Championship winning TF Sport car of Derek Johnston and Jonny Adam. Both drivers had opportunities on the microphone to speak publicly (on various sponsor/supplier stands) about their season gone and for the expectations for the coming year. Adam for one was expecting a busier international year of commitment!

As promised late last year, Johnston met up with the guys and girls at the British Motorsport Marshal's Club stand to donate his crash helmet from least year as the club looks to raise funds for their members. Details on how you can enter into winning said crash helmet will be confirmed as soon as they are known either by public auction or sealed bids.

Whilst Johnston spoke on the Pirelli stand, Adam would have his turn over on the Sunoco stand as he and this years winners of the Sunoco Challenge, Max Bladon and Seb Morris spoke about their experiences at the Roar before the 24 and their hopes and expectations at their events at the Rolex24 later this month.

Other cars on display included a rather 'mixed and matched' AMR V8 Vantage GTE which sported the colour scheme and numbers of the 2016 World Endurance Championship team and driver winning car, although all was not quite as it should have been!

A version of that car was due to run in the live arena at the show this year with Darren Turner but that sadly failed to materialise some weeks before the show. Turner did make an appearance on stage to discuss his Base Performance simulator business.

Other cars of note included the new for 2017 Macmillan Racing V12 Vantage GT3 which Jack Mitchell and James Littlejohn will run in the British GT championship. Whilst Mitchell was out racing in the Dubai 24 it was left to newcomer Littlejohn to mix with the crowd. For some reason their car had resided itself within the VIP lounge area - not exactly your normal piece of lounge furniture but hay-ho!

That left the Beechdean GT3 and the GT4 raced by Aston Martin restoration expert Desmond Smail to pick up the pieces as display articles on component supplier stands.

Now, various drivers were seen and some engaged into a bit of casual conversation - none however (and very unfortunately) divulged any detail about their 2017 plans!

For that we will have to wait until their series official announcements but for some series, that is quite soon!

Wednesday, January 11, 2017

R-Motorspotrt, the racing division of Swiss based Aston Martin St Gallen have been slowly but surely confirming most of the identities of their two car, six driver line up for February's 12hours of Bathurst.

Already confirmed within the Invitational Class entered Aston Martin Vantage GT8's first racing appearance outside of continental Europe will be the return to the Mountain of St Gallen's and R-Motorsport's co-owner Florian Kamelger who will be racing alongside Bathurst newcomers Markus Lungstrass (a Nordschleife driver coach) and Aston Martin Racing works driver Darren Turner.

 Florian Kamelger

Marcus Lungstrass

Joining the GT8 crew will also be three drivers for the team's V8 Vantage GT4 entry , a car that is usually more akin to the twists and turns of the Nordschleife circuit. Racing in that car will be R-Motorsports co owner and also mountain returnee Andreas Baenziger and Australian
Andreas Baenziger

Peter Leemhuis who also returns to both the Mountain and the R-Motorsport team having won his class in his last venture out in the Liqui-Moly event and having last raced with the team in 2016 at the Nurburgring 24H where he Bainziger, Kamelger and Mal Rose finished third in class in the teams GT4.

Peter Leemhuis (Far RHS)

That leaves a spare seat in the GT4 for someone like ………………………………….. maybe?

However, see Andy Palmers Tweeter reply -

Looking for someone to cheer in the Dubai 24 opener?

Monday, January 09, 2017

With no Aston Martin runners registered to make the start of the opening round of the 2017 International Endurance Series, it is left to us to look for a former #TeamAMR driver for accept our support of this weekends 24hour.

Without splitting hairs over anyone who may have raced an Aston in decades gone by, it appears that the official entry list gives us a choice of five former Aston Martin GTE, GT3 or GT4 runners. They are:-

  • Stuart Leonard in the #4 Belgium Audi Club Team WRT - formally of Leonard AMR (Blancpain)
  • Tom Onslow-Cole in the #16 SPS Automotive Mercedes AMG GT3 - Formally of Strata 21 (British GT)
  • Stuart Hall #27 GP Extreme Renault RS01 - formally of Aston Martin Racing (WEC)
  • Jack Mitchell - #229 Century Motorsport Ginetta G55 GT4 - Still of MacMillan Racing (British GT)
  • Paul White - #99 RKC/TGM Honda Civic - Formally of Strata 21 (British GT)

You takes your choice…………!

Huge steps taken by Sunoco Challenge winner at the Roar

Monday, January 09, 2017

More akin to racing around the national circuits of Britain in his Cooper Class Mini Challenge car, 2017 Sunoco Challenge winner Max Bladon found himself elevated to the dizzy heights of testing an Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 ready for the Continental Tyre Sports Car Challenge four hour support race at the Rolex 24 at the end of January.

With past winners usually testing a Sunoco liveried Ford Mustang (or similar), Bladen found himself placed with CTSC and Aston Martin stalwarts Automatic Racing for this weekends three day test spending time in both of the teams #09 and #99 GS class entered cars.

Indeed, far from embarrassing himself he and his team mates (together with the two TRG-AMR entries pictured below) finished the extended test all within the top half of the T&S screen which, for a car/tyre/team/circuit novice is truly admirable.

The #71 Gregory Milzcik/Brandon Davis TRG-AMR car indeed finished P2 overall come the end of the CTSC test session.

All return to Daytona for their extended for 2017 four hour support race prior to the Rolex 24 race itself on Saturday 28th January.

Fiery end to the Roar before the 24 for AMR

Monday, January 09, 2017

By kind permission of  Jamey Price Photo

Last weekends three day official test before the Rolex24 came to a flaming end for the Aston Martin Racing V12 Vantage GTD (GT3) on Sunday when a refuelling rig faulted mid flow, leading to a flash fire on pit row.

We understand that whilst no team or series personnel were injury and the car only suffered minor damage that marked an early end to the Roar before the 24 for drivers Paul Dalla Lana, Pedro Lamy, Mathias Lauda and Marco Sorensen.

Until then, the team had been clocking up their laps whilst they used the extended test as both a shakedown and system test together with acclimatisation to the new Continental tyres. Over 200 hundred laps were completed by the team, with some of those being the first ever on the banked oval for WEC champion Marco Sorensen.

None of the laps pushed the 'envelope' of the car and in true AMR fashion ended each of their six test session mid field with the exception of Saturday morning's wet AM session when the finished in P7.

This test says nothing about the ultimate pace of the Vantage GTD in comparison to the rest of the field as others pushed their cars to lap times nearly two seconds faster.

The team and their beautiful Northwest and IQ Options liveried #98 car return to Daytona later in the month ready for the Rolex 24 which starts (race) at 14:30hrs local on Saturday 28th January.

And now the good news

Monday, January 09, 2017

So, in the absence of any factory presence we have today seen that Ross Gunn will be at the Autosport Show this Thursday together with Andrew Howard and some of the Beechdean AMR guys. The team usually support the show by means of having at least one of their cars on display so we may be lucky and get to see their European Le Mans Series championship winning GTE?

Maybe these guys have got something to tell us about the forthcoming season……?

In addition to that, we now also know that Derek Johnston will also be at the show, along with his British GT Championship winning TF Sport V12 Vantage GT3 that he shared with Jonny Adam.

Johnston, and a host of other Pirelli shod racing car drivers will face a Q&A session with fellow racer Archie Hamilton (also just on the Thursday) with the video stream being posted onto the Pirelli Facebook page. Questions from motor racing fans are being welcomed by Pirelli for this session again via their Facebook page so get typing!

Johnston's red, white and black V12 Vantage GT3 will remain on display in the Pirelli area for the entire show.
