Spa 24 Official Test concludes with Garage 59 AMR in Top 10

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

This week’s two-day Official Test ahead of next months Total 24 Hours of Spa Francorchamps came to a conclusion today for the fifty GT3 cars that attended.

Spread over five sessions around the iconic 7km circuit, the teams had they one and only chance to experience the circuit in what turned out to be wet and dry, day and night conditions before the start of the main event still some three weeks away.

Garage 59 and their two Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT3’s were still our main attraction as drivers Alex West, Chris Goodwin and Jonny Adam tested aboard their #188 Pro-Am car and Andrew Watson, Valentin Hasse-Clot and James Pull tested their #159 Silver Cup entry.

No prizes again being on offer for taking unnecessary risk, the test was another systematic test for the AMR team, getting in that crucial data and preparative works before the #159 entered into the top 10 on the timing board in the final session of the day.

With the 24-hour race being part of both the GT World Challenge Europe and Intercontinental GT Challenge Series, the extended points on offer will be critical to each cars years end Championship aspirations with Watson/Hasse-Clot leading in Silver Cup and the #188 crew in P3 in the Pro-Am Championship.

Titles still to be won at final round of GT4 America (UPDATED)

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Having started way back at the beginning of March, the SRO GT4 America Series reaches its concluding round from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend after a gruelling five round season so far where the Series has played catch up with the global situation.

Starting off at the Circuit of the Americas, the Series came to a sudden stop with cars actually on track at the their intended second round from St Petersburg as something called COVID-19 locked down the continental United States.

Not starting up again until nearly four months later at the picturesque Virginia International Raceway did the four teams running the 2019 specification of Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4 car get to race again within the Series Sprint and Sprint X arenas. Sadly, the ongoing travel restrictions came at a cost as the Canadian based Roberts Racing team was unable to re-enter the USA because of COVID-19 precautions meaning that the former British GT GT4 Championship winning GT4 from the Beechdean AMR team would not be seen again after their early audition at CoTA.

With AMR cars entered by the Rearden Racing, BSport Racing, Rennsport 1 Notlad Racing and Flying Lizard teams, the new Aston GT4 has been nothing short of dominating in both the Am side of the Sprint Class and in the Pro-Am side of Sprint X.

UPDATE - Jeff Burton will not be competing this weekend after terminal engine damage was sustained during an earlier session

Flying Lizards Michael Dinan has run an incredible near 100% podium success rate – only missing out through technical issues or being absent from the racetrack like he was on day two of three at CoTA two weeks ago. From that performance, Dinan secured the Sprint Am Drivers Championship at that event despite having missed one day of racing.

In addition to that, the final two races at IMS in both the Sprint and Sprint X remain critical to all contending teams as the Sprint Am Teams Championship and Sprint X Pro-Am Drivers and Sprint X Pro-Am Teams Championships remain up for grabs with Rearden Racing being the closest contenders in Sprint Am Teams and Dinan and co-driver Robbie Foley being just three points down in the Sprint X Pro-Am Drivers title hunt.

Other runnings who have enjoyed podium success along the way include the Rearden Racing #59 of Paul Terry and the #91 of Jeff Burton. Burton has struggled most recently with accident damage and whilst Terry must be ruing the errors made in earlier rounds that lost him valuable points as the season progressed. The #15 AMR of BSport Racings Bryan Putt and AMR Academy Driver Kenton Koch have progressed massively over the season as they got to grips with their Aston Martin and only a pre-event testing accident kept them away from another podium finish last time out at CoTA.

That leaves the beautiful liveried #33 Rennsport 1 Notlad Racing AMR of Matt Dalton and Pat Gallagher. Having switched to the Aston at the start of the season it has taken Dalton a bit longer to find ‘the grove’ but their persistence was rewarded with a class Sprint X P3 podium in the first race at Road America. This team will not be competing in the final two races of the GT4 America Series as they have entered the banner event at the weekend in the eight hour Intercontinental GT Challenge.

UPDATE - The #33 is now competing again within its usual GT4 America Sprint X class this weekend.

In a grid of approximately twenty three cars, the #33 Aston Martin is the sole AMR present in the event with the full IGTC entries electing not to travel to the USA. Gallagher and Dalton will be joined by Jonathon Taylor in the field of ten GT4 cars.

Track action for the event gets underway today.

Sad news from British GT

Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Well, today sees an unfortunate double whammy of bad news for fans of the British GT Championship!

Firstly, we have confirmation from the race organisers that the final round of the revised 2020 Intelligent Money British GT Championship at Silverstone in November will (after all) be from behind closed doors. Without giving any specific reason as to why rounds can be held at MSV Circuits but not at the ‘home’ of British motor racing, the Championship issued this statement

The Intelligent Money British GT Championship's blue riband Silverstone 500 event will be held behind closed doors on November 7/8.

As one of the UK’s major sports venues, Silverstone has been working to the guidance of the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the safe return of spectators. The circuit has been unable to host fans since March but had been working hard behind the scenes to run British GT’s event with public. Both parties have waited for as long as possible to make this announcement but must now concede it is not possible to hold the event with spectators.

This weekend’s round at Snetterton will go ahead as planned with fans in attendance, while all three hours of the Silverstone 500 will be streamed live, free and unrestricted across British GT and SRO’s social media platforms.

That news comes in addition to some other news also confirmed by the Championship and the team that this weekend’s penultimate round of the season from Snetterton will now NOT include the Beechdean Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3 of Andrew Howard and Valentin Hasse-Clot.

This leaves the two Championship contending TF Sport Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT4’s as again the sole AMR representatives for the two one hour races in Norfolk. With more wintery weather in store going into the weekend, it may well become survival of the fittest in Norfolk on Sunday.

Another double double for AGS Events Racing in GT4 European Series

Tuesday, September 29, 2020

Another double - double podium for the AGS Events Racing Team crews by the end of the weekends fourth round of the GT4 European Series at Zandvoort, Holland has left the Aston Martin Racing team at the head of all three Championship tables.

Competing in both the Silver Cup with Valentine Hasse-Clot and Theo Nouet (#27) and the Am Class with Gilles Vannelet and Nicolas Gomar (#89), both AMR Vantage GT4 crews adapted well to the change in the circuits configuration and coastal variable weather conditions to secure both overall race podiums with the #27 car and further class podiums for the #89 car further back.

With their best performances come in the first race on Saturday afternoon, a P3 starting slot for Nouet was translated into a P2 overall and second in class finish after some great offensive and careful defensive (when required) driving from both French youngsters. Their efforts were mirrored by the ‘elder statements’ aboard the #89 Am car which was started from P17 overall by Vannelet before an injured Gomar finished things off with a P10 overall and again P1 in class result. Even a late Safety Car restart couldn’t deny the team these results.

Sunday morning’s second race of the weekend would be harder for both cars after the weather conditions earlier on Saturday meant for some difficult driving conditions for both Hasse-Clot and Gomar meaning that both cars would be starting towards the rear of the grid in P14 and P17 respectively.

Not letting a few GT4’s to get in his way, Hasse-Clot was soon rising up the timing board as the opening laps passed by before eventually pitting at the halfway mark from P5 overall and P3 in Silver Cup. Gomar was doing likewise, not so many passes admittedly but still in contention for an Am Class podium in P13 overall.

A long Safety Car delay for recovery works and barrier repairs after a Porsche and BMW tangled took half of the second drivers available track time. At the green, Nouet pushed hard to claim P4 overall but with one of the big Camaro’s hounding him all the way to the chequered flag around the final lap where the #27 car secured P4 overall and P3 in Class. For the #89 crew, that final dash to the flag would be equally competitive for them as they secured P13 overall but this time P2 in Class.

These results leave the team nine points clear at the top of the Silver Cup table, eighteen points clear at the top of the Am class and forty one points ahead in the Team Championship table as everyone heads towards Spa Francorchamps for the penultimate round there in four week’s time.

TF Sport leave Monza still in title hunt in GT Open

Monday, September 28, 2020

An impressive charge to the second step of the podium was the highlight of TF Sport’s weekend at Monza, as avoidable contact from a competitor in the second race heavily reduced the crew’s point-scoring potential. Round four of the International GT Open proved to be the team’s most challenging yet, however, the 2020 championship honours are still well within their reach.

Coming off the back of their 24 Hours of Le Mans victory, Salih Yoluc, Charlie Eastwood and the TF Sport crew were hungry for more success. However, it became apparent early on in the weekend that the long straights of Monza were much more suited to the Aston Martin GT3’s rivals. All the #34 team could do, was to focus on maximising the potential of their Vantage.

Salih took the first of the weekend’s qualifying sessions and managed to claim P6, behind a cohort of McLarens. A great race start by the Turk and despite slight contact, which dropped him down to seventh as the GT Open field navigated their way though to Rettifilo chicane on the opening lap, Yoluc made his Vantage as wide as possible throughout his stint to hold position until the stop.

A 15-second handicap had to be served for winning the previous race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, yet Eastwood still managed to return to the track in seventh, and wasted no time in working his way up the order. With less than 15 minutes remaining, some rather impressive manoeuvres saw the TF pro pass rivals #17, #7 and #57 in just a few corners, including a hero move around the outside at Parabolica. It was a drag race to the line with the #72 McLaren and despite Charlie finishing P3 on the road, 0.013s behind the Optimum machine, Nick Moss was handed a post-race penalty which promoted #34 to second place.

Eastwood’s qualifying session was a close contest for the top two rows and he fought to place the TF Vantage in P4, a mere 0.001s behind third position. Once again, a clean start was made and with the 25-second handicap in mind, Charlie gave it his all to work his way forward. Unfortunately, the performance of the #26 Bentley down the straights just couldn’t be matched and fourth was where Eastwood stayed until it was time to hand over to Salih.

Yoluc rejoined the race in sixth position, post-success penalty, and was doing well to fend off the pack behind. Unfortunately, hard contact from the #57 Teo Martin Motorsport McLaren in the latter half of the race, turned Salih around and dropped the TF Aston down the order. #57 was handed a drive through penalty for the incident and Salih took the flag in tenth place.

Minimal points awarded means #34 has remained third in the championship standings, 15 points behind championship leaders Chaves/Ramos in the #59 Teo Martin Motorsport McLaren.

The penultimate round of the International GT Open takes place at Spa-Francorchamps on 17-18 October.

From Nurburgring to Spa Francorchamps for Garage 59

Monday, September 28, 2020

From Le Mans to Nurburgring to Spa Francorchamps is the route some of Garage 59's drivers have taken over the last couple of weeks as the team arrives at the iconic Belgium circuit ahead of this weeks Spa 24 Test.

Four weeks from the main event, this week's test sees fifty cars make use of the two day and night test ahead of the toughest and most competitive GT3 24 hour race there is.

Garage 59 will again be entering both of their Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3's into the two day test in preparation for the 24 hour race that is now sadly destined to be held behind closed doors. Racing in their #188 Pro-Am entry will be Alex West, Chris Goodwin and Jonny Adam who all arrive at the circuit having just raced the teams AMR Vantage GT8R at last weekends ADAC Total 24H event where they finished third in class along with the driving services of Darren Turner. West and Adam also competed at Le Mans where Adam secured the GTE Am class win with his TF Sport AMR colleagues.

Alongside them in the teams #159 Silver Cup car should be drivers Andrew Watson, Valentin Hasse-Clot and driver of the day from the last round of the GT World Challenge Europe at the Nurburgring in the form of their latest signing, James Pull.

The test will also be conducted behind closed doors.

Class podiums for Aston Martin Racing Vantage at ADAC Total N24

Monday, September 28, 2020

It was double delight at the weekend for the two Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantages competing ADAC Total 24H around a rain soaked Nordschleife.

Principally the same car but for a 'few' performance tweaks here and there, saw the Garage 59 team enter their 'baby Vantage' GT8R for the first time within the 24 hour having debuted their little 'pocket rocket' at the last round of the Nurburgring Langstrecken Serie. This time they would be running an ultra competitive driver line up with Alex West and Chris Goodwin being joined by AMR factory drivers Darren Turner and the new 2020 GTE Am Le Mans 24h winner of the previous weekend, Jonny Adam within the races SP8T class.

Joining them at the event but this time competing within the more SRO aligned GT4 homologated class GT4 race car  within the SP10 class was the PROSport Racing Vantage of customer drivers Guido Dumarey, Alex Walker, Michael Hess and the teams resident Pro driver coach Nico Verdonck.

Having also competed together in various driver arrangements in previous rounds of the NLS with various degrees of success (or not), the 24H would mark a massive step up for all of the drivers as they each took a step up from their previous pedigrees of race car.

Starting from the off in wet conditions, things would sadly never improve overnight for the teams and the few spectators that were eventually allowed access into the Grand Prix circuit grandstands before the race was temporally red flagged just after midnight due to standing water and visibility issues.

A seven hour delay to the proceedings was required before Race Control deemed the circuit to be raceable again leaving just about a quarter of the race time left for those who had survived the riggers of the Green Hell up until then.

By the end, both cars took the chequered flag with each finishing third in their respective classes.

Fourth Place For The Heart of Racing Team

Monday, September 28, 2020

The Heart of Racing team enjoyed success at the Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course today with drivers Ian James and Roman De Angelis bringing the #23 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 home in fourth, a new season-best for the team.

Kicking off the day with qualifying, James was able to make the most of the improved speed that has been the focus of the team’s recent testing and practice efforts. Starting the afternoon’s race in fifth, James made headway through the field gaining ground and making it all the way to second place. Following the second yellow, James pitted and handed over driving duties to De Angelis who returned to the track in sixth. Fighting off the competition De Angelis quickly had the car up in fourth, and held on to the position all the way to the checkered flag.

Ian James:
A great weekend all round. Changes were made and improvements were seen and we are really learning how to get the best out of this car. This team never fails to impress and put in all they have to continuously improve in every aspect of the car’s and team’s performance. I’m hopeful that it won’t be long before the first podium and a result truly worthy of everyone’s efforts.

Roman De Angelis:
An amazing weekend for the team. Once again we’ve proved how we are constantly making strides forward with the car. From first practice through today, the changes we made had a significant impact on the performance of the car. Super happy with today’s result and look forward to even better results coming.

The team looks forward to the next race, the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on 10th October.

Two Astons - three races at IMSA Mid-Ohio

Thursday, September 24, 2020

Finally, but certainly by no means least sees the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship contingent make their way over to the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course just to the south of the Great Lakes for the latest rounds of the WeatherTech Championship and Michelin Pilot Challenge.

With both Championships having ran endurance rounds last time out at Road Atlanta two weeks ago, this round sees the multi class Weather Championship runners race a two hours forty minute race on Sunday whilst the GT4 runners within the Michelin Pilot Challenge will have two – two hour races over both Saturday and Sunday as they play catch up with events missed so far due to Covid.

Whilst the sole Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GTD from the Heart of Racing Team again enters the WeatherTech race with drivers Ian James and Roman de Angelis, the Michelin Pilot Challenge races will feature just one AMR Vantage GT4 from Kohr Motorsport for Championship contenders and AMR Academy driver Nate Stacey and driver coach Kyle Marcelli.

Having started from pole position at for the four hour race at Road Atlanta, the #60 AMR struggled after the first pit stop to then fall foul of the pit stop regulations in moving whilst the car was being refilled with fuel to earn Marcelli and the team a race damaging drive through penalty which dropped them down to P7 at the end of the race.

That result leaves the #60 crew just one point behind the Championship leading Autobahn Audi crew going into the race weekend.

Florida based Automatic Racing will this time not be entering any of their AMR race cars for reasons (we understand) to be no more than clashing with prior commitments seeing that Mid-Ohio is a post Covid organised race date.

The Heart of Racing team have been testing earlier this week at Sebring having come away from Road Atlanta with a season best P6 finish with the help of AMR factory driver Darren Turner.

International GT Open at Monza this weekend - but not in a form we know!

Thursday, September 24, 2020

Not the only crew mate to be racing again this weekend sees the remaining two thirds of TF Sports Le Mans 24hr GTE Am winning team of Salih Yoluc and Charlie Eastwood also get back down to business this weekend – this time back in the International GT Open Series with their Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3.

With Jonny Adam racing with Garage 59 in their new Vantage GT8R over at the ADAC Total 24 Hour at the Nordschleife, Yoluc Eastwood and crew have made their way back down to Monza in Italy for the fourth round of six of the GT3 series which will this time feature GT4 cars as well.

Being another series hit by the early issues of budgets and travel accessibility from the ongoing global pandemic, the event supporting GT Cup Open Series has not been able to muster entry numbers this year that they enjoyed last year to a point where their last round at Paul Ricard featured a grid of just ten cars. With further withdrawals going into their third round at Monza has forced race organisers to merge the few GT4’s that will be there in with the GT3 cars to form slightly larger and multi class races – a tried and trusted formula that will add a little bit of uncertainty for some in the larger cars.

Whilst we don’t know if Team Virage will be there at all with their Vantage GT4 and its two drivers of Robert Hefler and Phillippe Valenza, we do know that the team in red will be there with their #34 AMR Vantage GT3, still high from the spoils of success from Le Mans no doubt but still with a job to do if they want to secure the Series top GT3 accolades.

Featuring again a two race, pit stop punctuated programme over the course of the weekend, TF Sport lay just eight points behind the Championship leading team with six races still to come.

As usual, both races will be streamed live via their Series website.

Watch the heart of Racing team in action in New Zealand

Wednesday, September 23, 2020

As their sister car gets ready for action at the next round of the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship over at Mid-Ohio this weekend, take a look back at their racing from last weekends first round of the Golden Homes North Island Endurance Racing Series from Hampton Park.

With racers Darren Kelly and Alex Riberas again behind the wheel of the #52. Aston Martin Racing V8 Vantage GT3 after their debut win at the opening round of the South Island Endurance Racing Series only the week before, early technical issues within the car hampered their efforts at Hampton Park where they eventually finished P3 overall.

In New Zealand, the #52 car runs in aid of the Starlight Foundation raising vital funds for children's medical facilities in the country.

New AMR Vantage GT8R to debut at ADAC Total N24

Wednesday, September 23, 2020

The new Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT8R will make its debut in the ADAC Total Nürburgring 24 Hours on the world-famous Nordschleife in Germany this weekend, with partner racing team Garage 59.The Aston Martin Vantage GT8R, based on the same chassis that has proved successful in its GTE, GT3 and GT4 variants around the world, is set to compete in the SP8T class. It will be raced by works drivers Darren Turner (GB), and Jonny Adam (GB) – who won the GTE Am class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend – as well as Aston Martin test driver Chris Goodwin (GB) and GT World Challenge class race winner Alexander West (SWE).

Sitting between the GT3 and GT4 Vantages, the GT8R’s performance has been optimised around the race’s SP8T regulations, with reduced weight, increased power and improved aerodynamics compared to its GT4 counterpart. The aerodynamics package includes a larger rear wing, as well as new dive planes and splitter, whilst power and weight are targeted at the SP8T class limits of 549hp and 1450kg

An early concept of the GT8R actually won the SP8T class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours last year, in the hands of British trio Alex Brundle, Pete Cate, and Jamie Chadwick. Since then the production specification has been comprehensively developed and recently completed its sign-off testing at Aragon in Spain before making its race debut last month in round five of the Nürburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS).

Aimed primarily at customers wishing to race in the NLS and the Nürburgring 24 Hours, it is also eligible for the GT Cup in the UK, Super Taikyu in Japan, America’s Transam Series and the New Zealand Endurance Championship, as well as being an ideal candidate for a track day car. A run of 50 will go on sale at a list price of £225,000, while kits will be made available for existing Vantage GT4 customers to upgrade their cars.

Aston Martin Racing works driver Turner said: “The GT8R is such a fun car to race – it’s really easy to drive and gives the driver so much confidence. The car performed extremely well on its debut at the Nürburgring, and once we’ve applied the lessons we learned during the six-hour race – where it ran faultlessly – I expect it to be able to allow us to fight for class victory in the 24-hour event. You can really feel the step up in performance, but it remains a far less demanding car to race than a high downforce GT3 or GTE. I’ve loved driving it around the Nordschleife and I can’t wait to return there this weekend.”

Aston Martin Racing President David King added: “This car was borne out of a desire from our existing customers who wanted to step up to a faster machine than the Vantage GT4, and from our desire to have a truly competitive car in the increasingly important SP8T class at the Nürburgring. The GT8R exploits a gap in the market that allows drivers to experience the user-friendly accessibility of the entry-level Vantage, while delivering a significant step-up in performance.”

The 2020 Nürburgring 24 Hours starts at 1530 CEST on Saturday 26 September. More than 100 cars in 21 classes will battle it out in what is regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

AGS Events Racing looking to bolster Championship positions at Zandvoort

Tuesday, September 22, 2020

Three rounds complete - three rounds to go for the GT4 European Series teams as they make their respective journeys over to the infamous coastal circuit of Zandvoort to the west of Amsterdam for this weekends two hour long races.

Having run last time out at the Nurburgring at the beginning of the month, French team AGS Event Racing continue to be the sole Aston Martin Racing representatives in the Series, running an AMR Vantage GT4 in both the Am class for Nicolas Gomar and Gilles Vannelet and in the Silver Cup for AMR Academy drivers Theo Nouet and Valentin Hasse-Clot.

Germany was again fair to the #89 Am car with both a class win and a further class P3 over the course of that weekend whilst the #27 car was robbed of a sure podium going into the final lap of race one before they replied in the best manner possible in race 2 with both a class win and second overall in the race.

These results leave the #89 in the lead of the Am class with just one race result with them not on the podium so far blotting their copybook whilst in Silver Cup, the #27 car remains a close second in the Championship despite their unkind loss of points at the Nurburgring due to the puncture. Their results also place the team at the top of the Team Championship table although each is still open to the effects of underperformance between now and the end of the season at Paul Ricard in mid November.

Eighteen cars are again scheduled to compete at the weekend with officially timed Free Practice on Friday before Qualifying and Race 1 on Saturday and Race 2 on Sunday.

Adam joins Garage 59's ADAC Total N24 line up

Tuesday, September 22, 2020

"Fresh" from his class winning exploits at last weekends 24 Hours of Le Mans, one third of the 2020 Le Mans 24 GTE Am Class winning team that is Jonny Adam has today been confirmed as the fourth driver within Garage 59 Aston Martin Racing Vantage GT8R at this weekends Nordschleife endurance.

Featuring an already declared line up that includes fellow AMR factory driver Darren Turner, Adam will be joining up again. with co team owners of Chris Goodwin and Alex West aboard their revised #59 SP8T class car for the start of this years event which in itself has also been severely affected by the ongoing global pandemic.

First moved from its usually mid summer date to this weekend, the race was at first business as usual with fans in attendance before then being from behind closed doors to now, where fans are again welcome in the circuits grandstands only.

One small outstanding consideration going into the event was Alex West's fitness to drive this weekend after his sizeable accident and collision with the circuit barriers at Le Mans in his AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE but he has since confirmed with us that all is well and the driver line up remains as now stated.

They join the the #71 PROsport Racing AMR Vantage GT4 of Nico Verdonck, Guido Dumarey, Alex Walker and Michael Hess aboard their GT4 (SP10) class car.

Verdonck, the resident professional driver coach of the team has been supporting all three gentleman drivers through earlier Nordschleife Langstrecken Serie races as many step up from lower classes within the former VLN Series of racing to the full SRO homologated GT4 racer.

Unfortunately, early weather indications show a distinct drop in ambient temperatures over the race weekend plus a high possibility of - guess what? That’s right - rain!!!

Awesome!
